Gladys Gallivants
Disaster Averted
My camera used to be an extension of my right arm,
always ready to get that perfect shot. On a plane from
Winkhoek returning to Johannesburg late afternoon
in the 1970s, I was all geared up to take a view of the
skyline with setting sun behind the Hillbrow Tower as
locals called it. Officially it is the JG Strijdom Tower,
height 269 m and the tallest structure in the Southern
Hemisphere until 1978. It is owned by Telkom, South
Africa’s telecommunications company.
Seat belt already fastened, shutter speed sorted, I was
poised . Click. “ Great, I have accomplished that task,”
I commented to the traveller beside me as I smugly
settled back in the seat and mentally ticked off my
photographic to do list.
Many rolls of film on South West Africa - now Namibia
safely packed in the hold. I was looking forward to
arranging my photographs and reliving a wonderful tour
of the area.
Then we were seeing the same view again, that’s
strange! I took another fantastic shot. The plane passed
the same way a third time, I began to wonder...
Next moment, a young steward ran down the aisle, lay
face down, pulled up a square of carpet and looked
through the glass window. He seemed to be checking
on something. “They are not
folding out,” he whispered
to his colleague. But some
passengers had heard. The
wheels on the fuselage just
below us were not working !
That was enough for my fellow
passenger. She called for a
brown bag and proceeded to fill it. We appeared to be
having a problem.
“This is your captain speaking,” a voice boomed out
through the loudspeaker, “Please keep your seat belts
fastened. Our landing has been delayed. We will be
circling the airport again.” He did not add, again and
again.
Eventually we did land safely, if rather overdue, with a
fanfare of fire engines and emergency vehicles rushing
to meet the plane at the far end of the runway. The
passengers gave the pilot a round of applause – relief, I
am sure.
A bus took us back to the terminal much later but all
in one piece. This was not quite the happy ending to
a spectacular holiday in Namibia, more on that land of
scenic contrasts another time.
LIVING THE
ALEXANDER
WAY OF LIFE
by Liz Jeffries
So here we are, another year
gone; Christmas and New Year’s
Eve done and dusted. What is
your feeling about the onset of
another year? Do you look back
over the last year and ruminate
over the best bits and the not so
best bits. Are you anticipating
the forthcoming year with
pleasure, or dreading it?
Some traditions always remain
in place, including that of the
New Year’s Eve party. For some
years now I have gone along
to the same party, which is
fancy dress and always with a
different theme each time, such
as ‘the beach’. I remember one
very inspired guest turning up
in a stripe dress, holding two
wooden poles and making an
entrance as a deck chair!
This year’s fun party theme was
‘rubbish reboots’, films, etc.,
that were definitely not better
second time around and this
got me thinking. My work and
passion is all about rebooting
in a positive way. I work with
people who are looking for
change in some way; it could
be because they are in pain,
suffering from stress, or not
Feeling Good
performing as well as they
would like, which could be
in front of a laptop, walking,
playing an instrument. A large
proportion of these difficulties
can be attributed to ways we
use our bodies. By and large
we start off very well when
we come into the world, but
we never receive any proper
instruction, so we muddle
through in the intervening years
until suddenly we are faced with
postural issues which can affect
our enjoyment of life just at the
point in our lives when we have
more time and freedom to do
what we want to do rather than
what others want us to do.
My passion for Alexander’s
discoveries with movement
is that it can really enrich our
lives in helping to alleviate pain
and attain a real freedom of
movement. Just a small subtle
change in how we think, carry
ourselves and carry out our
activities is often all that is
needed.
I will always remain a ‘work
in progress’, but I believe that
being willing to embrace change
stops us from becoming too set
in our ways. So, bring on 2018 I
say! In the words of the Michael
Buble song above…’It’s a new
dawn,.… a new day,…a new
life’….so let’s start something
new.
P.S. One new thing I started
a few years ago was border
dancing, a fun and active way
to start shedding the excess
Christmas weight. Watch out for
Oak, Royal Foreign, Rye at 6.00
more about the surgical options will have an opportunity
to meet Mr Hamouda and Katie Peck, the Hospital’s
dietician who will work closely with patients before and
after surgery to help them reach and maintain a healthy
weight. In addition, patients who have undergone surgery
will be on hand to talk about their experiences.
Mr Hamouda said: “Patients usually consider weight loss
surgery after trying everything else, such as changing their
diets, trying to exercise more, hypnotherapy and other
methods without much success and at a huge expense.
Outcomes are dependent on following healthy dietary
patterns and weight loss can range from 30-70% of excess
weight. People are very pleased with the results, seeing
the benefits of increased physical ability, greater social
Gardening tips for mid-late Winter
by Phoenix Gardening
If you’ve made an early start on some of those
winter jobs then mid-winter can be a time for
mainly indoor jobs, such as perusing those plant
catalogues ordering seeds and plants, writing up
labels. It’s always a good habit to label things,
you may be certain of the plant, but it’s colour?
Especially if you’ve been dividing plants. That
said it is sometimes nice to plant something and
‘see what happens’. It’s also a good time to take
stock of the garden what worked what didn’t and
designing any changes or improvements you might
want to make. If you haven’t there’s still tidying
beds and borders to be done. Check bulbs and
tubers you’ve stored for rot or decay and cast
aside any unhealthy ones. If you like propagation
now is a good time to take hardwood cuttings and
root cuttings, a good ratio for cuttings is 10:1 but
you’ll often achieve better than this. Don’t neglect
the greenhouse check, plants and remove dead or
dying leaves before they rot. If you have a heated
greenhouse you can sow seeds, as long as you can
provide enough heat to germinate them and plenty
of light for the resulting seedlings. A warm window
sill can often suffice, but make sure they don’t dry
out.
If mid-winter is a quiet time then things start
again in earnest in late winter, preparing for the
year ahead, applying mulches and manures where
appropriate, ‘chit’ early varieties of potatoes,
prepare runner bean trenches. Put cloches out
to warm the soil underneath, plant shallots. It’s
a good time to plant fruit trees, also climbing
plants, and sow sweet peas. If you sowed some
sweet peas in the autumn pinch out their growing
tips. Make sure the greenhouse glass is clean to
maximise the amount of light plants can receive.
If you have a pond keep a small space ice free if it
should freeze over. You can do this by putting a pan
of boiling water on the ice until it melts through,
or leave a ball floating in the pond often that’s
enough to keep a gap free.
Enjoy your garden.
Creative Writing Corner
"Sussex by the Sea"
by Helene G. Ford
In August 1951, a pageant took place in Preston Park Brighton.
The lovely public park, which had once been part of the Preston
Manor Estate. The Pageant or A Cavalcade Through The Ages, told
the story of Brighton from its humble origins as the small fishing
village of Brighthelmstone, with its maze of narrow cobbled lanes and
fishermen’s cottages, to the fashionable watering hole that it became,
fashioned by Dr Russell and The Prince Regent.
I had turned six, in the May of that year. I was very excited at the
prospect of being taken by my Parents, to see this Pageant. There was
a great deal of preparation going on in The Park, leading up to the
big event. Marquees were being unfurled and great metal stands with
wooden seats were erected around the arena.
I had been to both Billy Smart’s and Chipperfield’s Circuses in
The Park, but The Pageant seemed much more exciting. The arena
space, to a child’s eyes, seemed absolutely enormous.
Brighton was one of twenty three towns and cities in the country,
selected as Festival Arts Centres, as part of The 1951 Festival of
Britain, and as such was granted money from The Arts Council.
Beside The Pageant, Brighton staged a Regency Exhibition at The
Royal Family Pavilion, which I went to see. I believe this was the first
time that the dining table in the Banqueting Room was displayed
with its grand table settings. Now, this is permanently on show.
I had longed to go to The Festival of Britain, but my Parents had
said it was to expensive. I had to be content with the pageant, however
spectacular it might be.
The evening of The Pageant arrived. It was a typical hot August
night. There were hundreds of people milling about. Roman soldiers
with helmets and shields, ladies in tall, powdered wigs and pannier
skirts and Cavalier gentlemen with flowing cloaks and ringlet curls.
We took our seats on the hard wooden benches and waited with
baited breath. The stage was set before us, the floodlights casting
shadows on the beautiful trees that surrounded the park.
In all there were eight set pieces, telling the story of Brighton
through the ages, from the arrival of Julius Caesar at Shoreham,
complete with a chariot race, to the receiving of The Corporation
Charter in 1854.
The highlight for me was the finale, when the entire cast of
one thousand people entered the arena and I heard for the first
time Sussex’s unofficial anthem, Sussex By The Sea, played by the
combined bands of The Kings Royal Huzzars.
All my life, this stirring march has been played at almost every
event I have been to in my home county.. It encompasses all that is
dear to those who love our County, and invokes a longing for dear old
Sussex, especially for those who are far from its diverse landscape,
beside the English Channel.
Welcome to our "Grandparents & Guardians" Family section
N
Now is the time for resolutions and turning and nippy for my liking.
over new leaves. We can all go on a diet
I'm not alone in thinking
for three days, give up a few bad habits
January is a bit rubbish.
and promise ourselves we'll behave. Who
Apparently the 15th of
are we kidding ?
January is "Blue Monday"
the most depressing day of
the year ! Even if it is cold
and dark, there's no point in
moaning about it, you've just
got to knuckle down and make
the best of it.
I'm not sure January is a good time for discipline
and self denial. I think after the whirlwind of festive
excitement I've just survived, I'm due a bit of self
indulgance and relaxation. It is lovely to sit around
a huge pile of food surrounded by my nearest and
dearest, but they are all a bit blooming loud! No
chance of hearing sleigh bells in the snow over the
racket that lot made.
Seven kids, three dogs, a couple of grumpy old men
and a smattering of tipsy teenage grandchildren.
It's enough to drive you to drink! The 27th of
December was a very strange day, I woke up in a
quiet, tidy house with no kids and it felt about as
unfamiliar as if I'd woken up on the moon.
So 2018 is here, though as regular readers will
know, I never really start enjoying a new year until
the daffodils have put an appearance in. I know
we're past the darkest point of the year, and the
days are getting longer, but they're still a bit short
A good start might be entering our War Horse
competition opposite. Winning that should see you
through Blue Monday with a smile on your face.
And there are of course plenty of things to see and
do at this time of year. We've got lots of ideas on
the pages of this magazine, so have a good look,
pick something you fancy and keep the blues at bay.
If you're taking care of the little ones in the
forthcoming February half-term, or even just joining
in on a family day out do have a look at some of the
fantastic venues & attractions advertised here in
the magazine. Stay happy, wrap up warm and I'll be
back like a Mad Hare in March.
Dear Alison,
I am writing as I am really worried
about my son. He is in year 4 at
school and is really struggling with
friendships. He is in a small country
primary school and there are only 10
boys in his class 5 of which are in
Year 3 as he is in a mixed 3/4 class.
I have watched him become more
and more unhappy about going to
school and he is now starting to say
he is useless and that no one likes
him.
It is horrible watching our children
struggle with friends at school
when all we really want to do is
take them away and put them in
a place where they will be happy.
Many of the letters I receive from
parents are linked to the issue of
friendships and their difficulties.
Things are obviously difficult for
your son however this could be
a golden opportunity to develop
some really positive and useful
relationship and social skills
that will benefit him throughout
his whole life. It is also a time
to develop his resilience and
demonstrate to him that he can
deal with difficult situations with
the help of family and friends.
You haven’t said what is
specifically going on with the other
boys so I can’t give you direct
strategies. Firstly your son needs
a boost, he needs to be reminded
about how special he is and how
well he can do a range of things.
His confidence has been knocked.
The best way to start is to just
comment on all the things you
observe him doing well. Aim for
10 positive comments each day.
This can be simple things ‘You
know I remember the days when
you couldn’t read your book from
school, but now you fly through
them and you help your sister with
her words.’ Your comments can
be on anything from his work in
school to the way he behaves or
acts. It would be worth talking to
your extended family and telling
them what is going on so that they
can also support and remind your
son how much he is loved and
appreciated.
The other thing is to support his
friendships with other children
both those friends at school and
outside. Clubs and societies are a
good place to make new friends,
this can be swimming or sports
related or things like cubs or
Scouts. Invite friends back to
the house to play or have tea or
organise trips out to do things
at the weekends. This doesn’t
need to cost a lot, it could be
a trip to the museum focusing
on something they are doing at
school or to an art gallery or
country trail. Get your son to help
you make a picnic as this is a way
to do something nice together as
well as saving money. When your
out support your son manage
the relationship with his friend
– coach him by verbalising what
may be happening. ‘I think Tommy
is fed up with that game now can
you see how he is starting to look
at other things or talk to me, can
you help him ……’ ‘I think Tommy
really likes it when you share the
headsets that tell the story of the
Battle of Hastings look how he is
running to the next post.’
As to the difficulties at school, the
best thing to do is listen, I know
it’s hard when you just want to
make things right but listening
to what he says is what he really
needs. If you are able to bear his
unhappiness then the message
you give him is that it is bearable
and that together you can problem
solve what to do. Help him to think
about what is going on and why
and then pose the question ‘What
are the different things you could
do?’ explore the different ways of
dealing with things together. Try
and be matter of fact as he will
pick up on your anxiety. Give him
positive feedback ‘That’s a good
way of dealing with that situation
I will be interested in seeing what
happens.’
It would also be good to talk to
his class teacher and join forces
in dealing with the issue together.
Listen to what they think is going
on and ways they can help at
school as I am sure they are
also concerned and will want to
support him and the other boys.
Dear Alison,
We have a son in year 3 who is
struggling with his reading. His
class teacher is concerned about his
progress and has told us we need to
hear him read each night. It has now
20
Find us online at www.goldentimes.co.uk
got to the stage where he really
doesn’t want to read at home as he
feels he is ‘useless’. I am finding it
really hard hearing him talk about
himself in this way. What can I do to
help him?
Reading is a complex process
which uses a range of strategies.
Children use the pictures within
the story to understand what is
happening, and then they tend
to learn by memory the words of
simple stories. They then learn
sight words and to these they add
their phonic knowledge and start
to sound out words as they read.
It would be really helpful if you
could have a conversation with
your son’s class teacher to discuss
which aspects your son is finding
difficult. If it is his sight vocabulary
then you could concentrate on that
using a variety of games at home
and not just reading his book. If it
is his phonics then this is the area
you can concentrate on.
Reading is something that you want
your son to enjoy again. Choose
a book and share it together with
you reading some and him reading
a bit. Write him notes and put
them on his bed or on the fridge.
Do some cooking together and
read the recipe together. There
are many ways to engage him in
reading in different ways just use
your imagination.
If you need to support his sight
vocabulary then chose 5 words a
week and work on those. You can
hide the words around the room
and if he can find them and read
them then he gets them. Put them
on the stairs so that you read them
together as you walk up and down.
Write them in the air whilst waiting
or going to school, make them out
of magnetic letters on the fridge
or when he is in the bath use the
foam letters. Most importantly
HAVE FUN.
If your son is struggling with
phonics then there are many
phonics games on the internet you
can find and play, or you can make
up your own. Sound out a word if
he can blend it together then he
wins a point. He then sounds out
one for you. You can make cards
together and then use those to help
you. Give him a picture of a CVC
word (Consonant Vowel Consonant
like cat, dog, pan etc) and then ask
him to segment it into sounds for
you to listen to and give the word.
Dear Alison
My daughter is in year 3 and is really
struggling with her handwriting. She
finds cursive writing difficult and says
her hand aches after just a few words.
Her teacher has told me that I need
to make her practice at home but she
hates it and we just end up having a
row which spoils our evening.
Handwriting is such an interesting
area. For some children who have
poor muscle tone it does make
their hands ache and so part of the
work is to strengthen their muscles
and develop their fine motor skills.
You can do this in a variety of ways
and there are some lovely apps
for the ipad that help children
practice letter formation. There
are a variety of fine motor skills
activities that you can Google to
support her so that you are not just
doing handwriting every night. You
can therefore do handwriting one
night, fine motor skills activities
another night, then tracing and
colouring – both good fine motor
skills work and then finally use the
app on the ipad. The other area
that you can work on is to teach her
to touch type – BBC Dance mat is
a good programme to use and is
free. By working on all areas you
will find that it becomes a bit more
fun and she will become confident
and competent in writing and also
typing.
For parents or grandparents whose children are struggling at school,
stuck in their learning, anxious or depressed, who have stopped
thriving or are acting out, life can become overwhelming, full of
worry and confusion as they try to find help for their children.
Educational Psychotherapy is a powerful approach to addressing
these issues. It is a way of meeting the child’s individual learning
needs, which in turn positively affects their ability to cope within
the classroom.
Educational Psychotherapy is a way of working with children which
combines teaching with therapeutic exploration of the emotional
factors triggered by learning. It is recommended for children and
young people who have become ‘stuck’ due to complex emotional
barriers to learning and development.
Barriers to learning and development may manifest themselves as:
Poor attitudes to learning based on attachment patterns,
• Failure to learn,
• Withdrawal,
• Difficult behaviour,
• Difficulty with social interactions and friendships,
• Violence or aggressive outbursts,
• Physical symptoms,
• Anxiety,
• Difficulties with transitions,
• Restlessness and an inability to focus,
• An inability to make good use of the learning environment or the
teacher.
Educational Psychotherapy produces real benefits in children’s
What is Educational Psychotherapy?
emotional well being and their capacity to learn and engage with
schools. By helping children and young people overcome these
emotional barriers to learning, their self esteem, resilience and
skills for learning are strengthened and engagement, positive
relationships and sense of well being are promoted.
Holding Back the Years
by Michele Duke
J
anuary can be a difficult
month. By “Blue Monday”
most of us are beating
ourselves up over broken
resolutions. The willpower of
New Year's day disappearing
along with the last of the
Christmas cake washed down
with a few glasses of Baileys
whilst bingeing on the box
set you got from the kids.
Recognise that? You too?
Let's be kind to ourselves.
Allow January to pass slowly
by as we finish the mountain
of nuts and eventually get
the glitter out of the carpet.
Come February we'll be raring
to go. That's the time to start
thinking ahead. The snowdrops
are peeking and daffodils are
already in the shops. Spring
can't be far away.
This is the last year I'll see
my fifties (yikes!). I'm a
grandmother (hooray!). And
the knees can be a bit dodgy
in the mornings. But I'm not
giving in. When I get on the
dance floor I can still show the
youngsters a thing or two. My
theme for 2018? "Holding back
the years”. Here's my top tips
for keeping old age at bay.
(Most apply across the board,
but you chaps might want to
hold back on 3 & 4.)
1. Eat healthily and exercise as
much as possible. Nothing is
more ageing than poor health.
Build exercise in to your daily
routine. Run up the stairs.
Dance around the kitchen (à
la Richard Gere and Susan
Sarandon). Join a class. Play
golf. Walk. Walk. Walk.
2. Good skincare. Glowing
skin and minimal wrinkles.
Why wouldn't you? Get expert
advice to choose the right
solution for your skin. Ignore
products that promise miracles
– find ones that actually work!
3. Wear makeup. When I look
in the mirror first thing in the
morning, I thank the gods
for makeup. Why not look
gorgeous? Do it for others if
not for yourself. Book a free
make-up consultation and I’ll
show you how to look fabulous
at any age.
4. Get comfortable in heels.
Even a small heel or wedge will
make you feel more feminine,
more sexy and more youthful.
Invest in a great pair of shoes
or boots that make you feel
amazing.
5. Clear out the closets. I know
I harp on about this, but come
on. You know there’s some old
tat in there that will never see
the light of day, so toss it. Make
way for some new styles that
look fresh and contemporary.
6. Spend time with younger
people. It's easy to become
complacent about ageing if
you spend all your time with
people who are getting old.
Mixing with all ages helps you
stay up to date with current
trends and stimulates the mind.
7. Be positive. Old age is
associated with grumbling,
so don’t give in to it. Find the
up side to every situation and
show your sunny nature. We all
love joyful people, so spread a
little happiness.
8. And, of course, have fun. We
may not be as young as we
once were, but we’ll never be
this young again. Enjoy every
day, and live well.
Happy 2018 and I look forward
to meeting you this year. I’m
going to have lots of opendays
and drop-ins so call me
for more details.
I am Michèle Duke and I help
women look and feel fabulous.
Come along to one of my
beauty and health workshops
or a personal fashion styling
session to learn how to look
your best. They’re free, informal
and lots of fun. Check out the
Salmon Fillet with Nuts & Wild Rice - Recipe by Faz Razeen
Classified as an oily fish, and very popular, salmon is considered to be healthy due to the fish's high protein. Salmon flesh is
generally orange to red, although there are some examples of white-fleshed wild salmon. The natural colour of salmon results
from carotenoid pigments. Versatile and delicious, full of flavour, not too expensive salmon fillets are quick and easy to cook,
whether baked, grilled, pan fried or poached.
Serves 4, 10-15 minutes to prepare, aprox 30 minutes to cook.
Ingredients :
4 salmon fillets
2 tbsp. olive oil
1 red onion sliced
2-3 garlic cloves chopped
½ tsp. ground cumin
2 tbsp. of coarsely chopped coriander
180g brown basmati and wild rice
900ml chicken or fish stock (2 x 80g cubes - any brand)
45g pecans
45g mixed seeds inc cashew nuts
60g dried apricots
1 lemon- for juice and wedges for garnish
Salt and freshly ground black pepper for seasoning
3 Meanwhile, warm a frying pan over a medium heat and
dry-fry the nuts and seeds for 2 minutes, until they are just
fragrant.
4 Melt the butter in a frying pan. Add the salmon skin-side
down, season with salt and freshly ground black pepper and
squeeze over a little lemon juice. Fry for 2-3 minutes, then
turn the salmon over and fry for a further 1-2 minutes, or
until cooked through.
5 Stir the nuts, seeds, coriander into the rice. Serve with the
salmon on top and lemon wedges.
It's a dog's life, by Lottie "Our Golden Girl"
I've been here at Golden Times since last summer
and I've been busy getting the humans dog-trained.
At first I think it was a bit of a shock for them,
making sure they got my
food on time, played with me
enough and cleaning up after
me quickly, but they got the
hang of it after a couple of
weeks. Humans can be quite
difficult to train, and there
were a few early tantrums,
but now this bunch are
starting to behave themselves
nicely.
Before I came here I didn't
know what a magazine was,
I've had a good chew on three or four recently,
and they're great. I am now an expert on making
a magazine as I've watched the big human do it.
There's a big silver thing in the corner of one of the
rooms that shows pictures. You sit in front of that
and make tapping noises on a little plastic thing for
hours. Sometimes you get upset and say bad human
words at the silver light thing, and a few weeks later,
the magazines arrive in boxes that smell funny. That's
all there is to it. Amazing isn't it ?
For those of you who don't know, I am a Shih-Tzu,
which means that my ancestors lived in a palace
with the Chinese Royal family.
Technically, I am royalty and
incredibly important, though
I wish someone would point
this out to the fox who keeps
coming into MY garden and
having a poo! The cheek of it!
So anyway, the humans
here want you humans out
there, to send in photos of
your pets. Dogs, cats, birds,
lizards, fish, whatever. They
know lots of you love your
pets so here's a chance to make them nearly as
famous as me! You can also get in touch if you'd
like to advertise your business to pet owners too.
Whatever "advertising" is...
Send them to my human at "debby@goldentimes.
co.uk" and your messages will appear on her laptop
which is a warm flat thing that is really good to lie on
when you need a few hours sleep.
See you all next time, love Lottie.
That's all folks!
