We enjoyed singing Tamil songs (because the rolling of the tongue is a special skill!). In our time, we witnessed racial riots and later the separation of Singapore from Malaysia. Thereafter, we became an independent nation. 2. I write as a Singaporean I was awarded a Colombo Plan Scholarship in 1967 and studied naval architecture in the UK. Upon graduation, I returned and served in the ship-building industry. I saw the transformation of Singapore part of Malaysia (in September 1963), and then becoming independent (August 1965). Credit of our national success these past 50 years or so must go to the founding fathers, many of whom were from RI. 3. I write as a BoG (Board of Governors) member RI went independent in 1990, implemented the Raffles Programme in 2004, and reintegrated with Raffles Junior College in 2009. These changes were made to improve the life of Rafflesians. Ultimately, nation-building, and its success lies in preparing Rafflesians to serve Singapore in various roles.
