5 Tips for
Clean Eating
Although “clean eating” has been a buzzword
phrase for a few years, its definition and principles
are sometimes confused with diets, like Paleo or
Whole30. Unlike these short-term eating plans,
clean eating is a lifestyle change, not limited to
a couple weeks or a month. With a few simple
tweaks, it’s easy to follow the clean lifestyle and
create better eating (and buying) habits.
1 LOAD UP ON FRUITS AND VEGETABLES.
Be sure to shop the perimeter at Publix and stick
to whole, raw produce, such as carrots, apples,
strawberries, tomatoes, etc. Anything in its original,
fresh-from-the-farm condition is fair game.
Pick fresh lettuce and spinach over their bagged
counterparts when possible.
2 CHOOSE MINIMALLY PROCESSED GRAINS.
Similar to produce, minimally processed grains
receive little treatment from harvest to packaging.
They provide more antioxidants and fiber
than white flour counterparts. Oats, quinoa and
wild rice all fall into this category.
3 STAY AWAY FROM SUGAR AND SALT. Sugar
has been shown to have addictive symptoms,
which makes individuals crave it more. Many
processed foods have salt in abundance, which
homemade versions lack or have in smaller
doses. Flavor dishes with citrus, herbs and spices
instead.
4 LIMIT PROCESSED FOODS. Resist the urge to
walk through the chip and cereal isles. Don’t even
bat an eye at them. Processed foods lack important
nutrients and stimulate the overproduction
of dopamine, which can lead to unhealthy cravings
and overeating.
5 DRINK PLENTY OF WATER. It’s been said
often enough, but it’s worth repeating. Men’s and
women’s bodies are made up of 50 to 60 percent
water. Women should aim to drink 9 cups of water
daily, while men should try to drink 13 cups
of water each day. You’ll stay hydrated and flush
out any toxins in your body.
