Winter Tree Identification<br />

Wisconsin trees by seeing, touching, smelling, and even tasting them in their winter condition.<br />

Head out in the field as we tramp through the snows of February to discuss trees’<br />

roles in nature, their habitat, place in ecological succession, and how they benefit wildlife.<br />

Summer Tree Identification<br />

If you enjoyed the “Winter Tree Identification” class, this class is a must! Step out into the<br />

field this summer as we continue our journey of knowledge. How do you tell a bur oak<br />

from a white oak; a butternut from a walnut; or a spruce from a pine? Head out to the trails<br />

and learn how to identify 20+ native Wisconsin trees and discuss their ecology, wildlife<br />

value, and how humans use them. This class is on-site at the beautiful and idyllic UW<br />

Invasive Species 101<br />

The beautiful natural landscapes of southeastern Wisconsin are under constant threat.<br />

Invasive plants are invading areas where we live, work, and play, and drastically alter<br />

landscapes that our local wildlife calls home. What is an invasive plant? How do I know if I<br />

have one on my property and what can I do to get rid of them? Learn from an expert how<br />

to identify common invasive species, where they grow, and steps to get rid of them! You<br />

will learn the common invasive species such as Garlic Mustard, Teasel, Dame’s Rocket, Wild<br />

Parsnip, Buckthorn, Honeysuckle, Canada Thistle, and Phragmites. The second session will<br />

consist of a field component which will introduce you to methods to remove and control<br />

common invasive plants. Come learn what works and share your own experiences! Class<br />

The Fascination of Astronomy and our Universe: What I Wish I Learned in High<br />

School!<br />

Don’t be left in the dark! Let’s journey through our universe and find out how supernovae<br />

are the most violent-known events to occur in our universe. Over 95% of our universe is<br />

made of things we cannot see or understand. Are there other universes? How long will<br />

our universe last? Why isn’t Pluto a planet anymore?! Just when it cannot get any stranger,<br />

along come white dwarfs, neutron stars, quasars, and pulsars. Answer questions like: What<br />

are dark matter and dark energy? How do we know they exist? Come and see why the<br />

universe is such a fascination!<br />

Super Cool! Astrophotography: A Beginner’s Guide to Getting Started!<br />

Ever wonder just how those marvelous color photographs of objects in our universe are<br />

created? Astrophotography is a specialized type of photography for recording photos<br />

of astronomy that include celestial events, astronomical objects, and even the night sky!<br />

Learn what it takes to meet the challenges, and take your own pictures of the universe!<br />

Explore some general aspects of astrophotography and basic cosmology by developing<br />

a general understanding of telescopes and digital photography. This class includes a field<br />

trip to a local home observatory to practice astrophotography.<br />
