Let me start by saying, thank you for the honor to serve
you as your Potentate 2018. Lady Tammy and I will do our
very best to work hard for the Nobility, and most of all the
hospitals that care for our children! I would like to thank
Illustrious Sir Frank Hester and Lady Tracy for a great year.
I would also like to thank the 2017 Divan and ladies for all
their hard work, and I look forward to working with each of
you in 2018.
There are some changes coming in 2018. First, the Stated
Meeting will be at 7:30pm, Captains Meeting at 5:30pm,
Unit Meetings to follow the Captains Meeting. NO MEAL
WILL BE SERVED ON THE FLOOR. NOBLES ONLY.
There will be a drawing at the Stated Meetings each month
(firearms, TV’s, refreshments, etc). No cost…only your
attendance to be eligible to win (great prize for January!).
Please come and support your unit and temple. Do not
forget to call the office (April) for my Potentate’s Trip in
Daytona Beach, FL to support Imperial Sir Jim Cain as he is
sworn in as Imperial Potentate.
In closing, I would like to welcome Oriental Guide
Vernon Blackburn and his Lady Trish to our Divan. Al
Menah will have a great year in 2018 with your support.
Remember… Stay Humble and Kind!!
Yours in Faith,
Horace Perkins, III

CHIEF RABBAN
We had a busy and productive last month
of 2017. We cannot extend enough
thanks to the cadets of the TN Law
Enforcement Academy for their
most generous gift of toys, cash, and
their time at the Patient’s Christmas
Party. It was an honor to be at your
graduation and our prayers are with
you as you begin your careers in law
enforcement.
I wish to extend my thanks for electing me
to this office for the best Temple in all of Shrinedom. I pledge to
you all to do my best in the fulfillment of my duties. Remember,
the stronger our temple the more we can help our hospitals and
our precious patients.
I hope all of you make a part of your New Year’s Resolution to
become more active in club and/or temple activities. The Shrine
is a unique organization where we can enjoy fun and fellowship
while assisting others.

Where did the year go to?
ASSISTANT RABBAN
Congratulations to PP Frank Hester
for a great year in 2017 and looking
forward to our 2018 Potentate Horace
Perkins’ year.
I want to say thank you to all the
nobles for allowing myself to serve you
in this capacity... I will do my best. If
we continue to work together, then there is
nothing we cannot accomplish.
Also, I would like to welcome our new Oriental Guide
Vernon Blackburn to the Divan. He will be a great asset to the
Divan and Al Menah.

HIGH HIGH PRIEST PRIEST AND PROPHET AND PROPHET
There’s no other way to start this letter other
than to thank you all for your support in
electing me to be your High Priest and
Prophet but fellows, have you thought
this out? Even as I write this I have
been compelled to travel to the east
(Gatlinburg) by some overwhelming
force (my wife) in search of the
mystic Crystal balls so that I might
prophesy. I have found several so far,
black balls with 8’s on them, snowballs,
meatballs, but finally a genuine crystal ball!
Having secured this sacred artifact, I just couldn’t wait to see
into the future. So on a bleak and windy mountain top in the
dead of night (hotel balcony about 8:30) I asked for a sign: in
the fog and haze a giant black form with a long neck appeared,
only for a moment, and then disappeared back into the fog.
I asked the sacred ball for an answer - it came - at Dawn. I
beheld the truth - the black enigma was a giant black skillet
marked “pancakes and coffee $2.99 all you can eat” across the
street... this crystal ball thing is great - I’m gonna like this job.

I want to start by thanking each of you
for your hard work this past year and
for making it a successful year for all
ORIENTAL GUIDE
of Al Menah. Lady Trisha and I wish
you and your families a very happy
New Year.
If you’ve ever seen the joy and
excitement that more than 700
wrapped Christmas presents bring to
a child’s face then you were most likely
at the Al Menah Shrine Patients Christmas
party held here at Al Menah in December. Thank you to the
Tennessee Law Enforcement Cadet Class for their help and
support with this very special event.
I am honored to serve as your Oriental Guide this year and
thank you for your confidence and support. I hope to see each
of you at the January Stated Meeting as we kick off a new and
exciting year for Al Menah. With your help we CAN make a
difference in the lives of children. I know you are committed to
doing so, and I thank you for all that you do to help Al Menah
continue to lead by example.
The Author Vern McLellan once wrote “What the new year
brings to you will depend a great deal on what you bring to the

Dear Fellow Nobles,
We are pleased to have this opportunity to wish you
Happy Holidays, a Merry Christmas and a Happy New
Year. The holiday season is a time to celebrate and
treasure family and friends, and to look at the world with
a fresh perspective – one full of hope, wonder and joy.
We are honored and proud to count you each of you as
a member of our huge, extended global family and to
share this special time of year with you. We are also
proud to be part of organizations that, in a way, celebrate
this special season every day. We say that because every
day, our patients and families find, hope, wonder and joy.
This happens because of the ongoing efforts, dedication
and commitment of our staff, nobles and volunteers – at
every one of our locations. It is because of you that
children are able to take their first steps, learn to hold a
pencil, or speak and be understood.
Our philanthropy and fraternity have several thousand employees and volunteers, and you may think your
role isn’t noticed or particularly important. But, it is the combined individual effort and commitment of every
single one of you that has made our health care system and our fraternity respected worldwide. Together, we
truly do improve lives and make the world a better place.
During the holiday season, many of you participate in a wide variety of initiatives – from toy drives to
motorcycle runs to raffles – to ensure that children and families will have happy holidays – replete with toys,
food and all the festive trappings of the season. We thank you for those efforts, as well.
As 2017 winds down, and we look forward to the New Year, we wish you and your families a great year, full
of hope, promise, peace, prosperity and good health. We also ask that you spend some time reflecting on your
fraternity and philanthropy, and re-commit to being as involved and active as possible, and to genuinely
supporting local, national and international efforts and initiatives. It truly does take the combined effort and
energy of each of us to impact the world around us. If you’re not sure how you can take a more active role,
speak with your temple leadership. There are always ways to participate.
We look forward to continuing to work with you to strengthen both Shriners International and Shriners
Hospitals for Children® and to continuing to make a difference in the lives of children.
Finally, together with our ladies, Anne and Lisa, we thank you for all that you do and wish you holidays full
of memorable times with family and friends, and a New Year of joy, wonder, hope and peace. Enjoy every
moment and every memory the season brings.
Yours in the faith,
Paper Sale Donation from Kroger
On Monday, 7/18 Potentate Jeff Head and members of the Williamson
County Shrine Club were with Kroger Management at their Belle
Meade store where they presented a $1,000.00 to us for the Shrine
Hospitals for Children. The Kroger Manager was an acquaintance of
Scotty and Teresa Travis who put this together for the Al Menah Shrine
Hospitals for Children Paper Sale.
This is a portion of a message from Phyllis Berry, wife of this
Kroger Store Manager, Michael Berry.
Let me tell you, our son was a Shrine Hospital patient
and we are forever grateful The experience was an
awakening in humanity. The care was phenomenal. The
friendship my family made. The support from the men in
your fraternity was phenomenal. We thank you for all you
and your members do for children across the country.
Sincerely
Phyllis Berry
Fraternally,

A FRATERNAL NEWSLETTER December 2017
A Message From Your Public Relations Chairman
Dear Fellow Nobles,
I’m glad to have this opportunity to wish everyone
Happy Holidays and Merry Christmas, and to express my
appreciation for all your hard work, efforts and dedication
to the missions of Shriners International and Shriners
Hospitals for Children ® . During this joyous time of year,
we hope you’ll take time to enjoy the season, and to be
with family and friends, sharing special memories and
creating new ones.
Some call this the “Season of Hope.” Hope is one of
the most important gifts we can give, and is something
many of our patients and families discover while at
Shriners Hospitals. What a little hope and confidence can
accomplish can be seen in our new DRTV ad (hopefully
you will see it sometime over the holidays). In the
spot, titled “The 12 Days of Christmas,” patients with
prosthetics are performing ballet and a patient missing a
hand is playing the piano. These children are learning that
challenges can be overcome, and dreams are possible.
Every one of us should be incredibly proud of what
our health care system helps make possible. Shriners
Hospitals for Children – your philanthropy – truly does
improve lives and make the world a better place. In case
you miss it, here’s a link for a YouTube version: youtube.
com/watch?v=tbavHGnKh7w.
Just as our patients can overcome challenges and achieve
their goals, we – as Shriners – can, with significant effort,
determination and confidence, meet the challenges we
face – especially increasing our membership numbers.
If you think it can’t be done, and there is no use in
expending the energy to raise interest in the fraternity,
remember the effort of our patients and what they
accomplish in the face of far more daunting obstacles. All
each one of us needs to do is try – every day.
That would be a great New Year’s resolution for us: To
do something each day to strengthen our membership
numbers, which, in turn will strengthen our philanthropy.
6
As you prepare for the New Year, remember to watch
for our float, Caring for Kids Around the World, when
you tune in to America’s iconic Rose Parade on New
Year’s Day. Participating in this popular event provides
tremendous media exposure for us, and the opportunity
for countless people to learn more about or discover
Shriners Hospitals.
Also, remember the East-West Shrine Game on Jan.
20 at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, Florida. We look
forward to seeing as many nobles and their families
at the game. It’s a great time, and an important event
for our organizations. So, please come on down and
support it. If you can’t make it in person, watch it on NFL
Network, or, better yet, get together with your fellow
nobles, host a watch party and invite the community.
The East-West Shrine Game office has materials to
help you hold a successful event. Contact the staff at
EastWestShrineGame@shrinenet.org for
more information.
Again, we wish you Happy Holidays and a Merry
Christmas, and a healthy and Happy New Year!
Thank you for your continued commitment and dedication
to your fraternity and philanthropy.
Yours in the faith,
Jim L. Cain Sr.

Clowns
2017 was a fantastic year for
clowning! The Fabulous Al Menah
Clowns definitely earned their title
with dress outs. We put smiles on
thousands of faces with parades, State
Fair skits, paper sales and the Circus.
Christmas parades were plentiful in
December, with as many as five events
in a single day! The Patient’s Party was
a great success with help from local
law enforcement.
The Clowns also had their Clown
Officer Election December 5th. The
results are as follows:
Captain: Frank “Froggy” Wilson,
Lieutenant: James “Puzzles”
Chambers, Secretary: James “Snips”
Lee, Treasurer: John “Sweet Pea”
Waynick. Our newly elected Officers
were installed at the Clown Christmas
/Awards Party held December 16th.
Congratulations goes out to Charlie
“Hot Rod” Jackson as Clown of the
Year and Clay “Flat Top” Hedgepath
as Rookie of the Year!
The Al Menah Clowns would like
to give a big “Thank you!” to Vernon
“Jingles” Blackburn and Lady Trisha
for a fantastic year as Captain and
First Lady. Their leadership, guidance
and truly caring is what continues to
keep us focused on working for our
Shrine children and our hospitals.
We would also like to congratulate
our newly elected Divan for 2018! We
are looking forward to good things
this new year!
Please keep our brothers, whose
health and circumstances keep them
from being with us, in our prayers.
Happy New Year!
Jim “Snips” Lee
Secretary

Legion of Honor
The Legion of Honor had a very active
December with numerous Christmas
parades. We enjoyed them all and
had good turn-outs. The crowds were
very supportive and welcomed us
with loud cheers and applause. The
weather was very reasonable except
for the Hartsville and Gallatin parades
which were very cold with some
snow flurries. But the hospitality in
Gallatin at KFC afterwards warmed
both our bodies and our stomachs!
Thanks to the Sumner County Shrine
Club for that.
For 2018, the LOH elected Art
DeVooght - Commander, Wayne
Steele - Vice Commander, and Steve
Singleton - Lt. Commander. These
Nobles were installed on Dec. 15th
during our LOH Christmas Party at
AL Menah along with Ron Queen as
Finance Officer and Gene Ornes as
Adjutant.
In support of our Past Potentate
Jim Cain being installed as Imperial
Potentate in Daytona Beach in July
2018, a Drill Team is being formed
under the leadership of Nobles Steele
and Singleton.
The LOH presented colors at the
Al Menah Patients Christmas Party.
Attendance was strong with many
patients and their families, as well as
the graduating class of the Tennessee
Law Enforcement Training Academy
who passed out gifts which had been
donated to them for the children.
The graduates were in uniform and
came from various towns and cities
all across Tennessee. Santa Clause
was also there and passed out gifts.
The children all left there with many
presents, treats, toys, smiles on their
faces and full tummy’s.
The LOH had a great year under
the leadership of Commander Roy
Lindsey, and the Nobles hope to
continue the momentum into 2018 in
support of our new Potentate, Horace
Perkins and expanded activities under
the leadership of our past commander
Harry Dunn as Legion of Honor
SESA Commander.
Respectfully submitted,
Art De Vooght
Commander

As the new year starts, it seems that
our units communications are a
little slow to get going. As you can
see, only two units/clubs provided
submissions for the January Shriner.

you see on this page, the list below
contains all other units & clubs
that have submitted articles to the
Shriner in the past.
• Al Menah Band

SHRINE CLUBS
• Hendersonville Shrine Club
• Sumner County

of the nobility and the Shriner is
a means to educate the nobility
at large of their functions and
contributions to our organization.
Captains / club Presidents, use the
Shriner as an outlet to increase
membership in your unit / club.
Please notify editor of the person,
including their email address,
who will/should provide the
communications to the Shriner by
sending an email to editor.amsc@

space, will be made to include your
communications in the Shriner if
submitted on time. The deadline for
submissions is printed on the back
