A SPECIAL SUPPLEMENT TO THE WORLD Your Health © ADOBE STOCK Berlin Mall and Green Mountain Club Combine to Present Year Two of “Walk The Long Trail at Berlin Mall” From January 13 (MLK Weekend)-April 22, 2018 (Earth Day), the Berlin Mall welcomes walkers to experience an indoor version of the Long Trail, and help raise funds for the Green Mountain Club—official stewards of The Long Trail. Walk the Long Trail at Berlin Mall taps into Vermonters’ love for the outdoors, and offers a fun, healthy, interactive and educational experience. By walking 544 laps in the mall’s heated, enclosed common area, participants can walk the equivalent of the Long Trail’s 272 miles. Photos, graphics, and other media provide the sense of being immersed in the Trail and its surroundings. Participants’ walking distances are recorded as they achieve milestones along the way, and the mall owners (Heidenberg Properties Group) are donating funds to our presenting partner, the Green Mountain Club, based on the number of miles people walk. All registered walkers receive a commemorative poster and colorful milestone stickers to track progress, plus special offers and giveaways. Walkers can register online at theberlinmall.com/walk, and onsite at the mall. Along its 272 miles, there are 5 peaks over 4,000 feet in elevation and 66 rustic shelters for overnight camping. The Green Mountain Club (greenmountainclub.org) is celebrating over a century of heroic volunteers and great hikes on the Long Trail. The trail exists because the GMC and its 1,000+ volunteers work hard to keep it going, and because members and donors provide support. The owners of the Berlin Mall have special plans for the mall—“Our vision is to create a vibrant town center where people of all ages live, work and play in a way that embraces community and celebrates life in Central Vermont,” said Michael Rushman, Director of Marketing and Strategic Planning. “Walk The Long Trail At Berlin Mall is a great example of how a town center concept brings people of all ages together, and is a glimpse of exciting things to come at Berlin Mall,” added Rushman. YOUR HEALTH | SELF IMPROVEMENT Resolutions for Women The beginning of each new year gives us the chance to form a fresh start and get on top of our health. Women can take advantage of this new beginning by changing behaviors that lead to common diseases and enhancing their overall lifestyle. COMMIT TO VISITING THE DOCTOR Many common health conditions found primarily in women can be treated if they are discovered early in the development stage. Consider your age and follow these guidelines set by the American Cancer Society. • Breast cancer: Women ages 40 to 44 may begin an annual breast cancer screening with mammograms if they choose. Ages 45 to 54 should follow a strict annual mammogram screening. Those 55 and older can safely switch to breast exams every other year. • Cervical cancer: From age 21 to 29, women should have a Pap test every three years; women 20 to 65 years old every five years. Women over 65 years should discontinue testing. RETHINK HOW YOU EAT Resolving to lose weight this year will provide you with many health benefits. A healthy weight lowers the risks of cardiovascular disease, highblood pressure and diabetes. Consider scheduling an appointment with a nutritionist in your area to creating a diet filled with fat-killing foods such as leafy greens, lean proteins and plenty of water. GET PHYSICAL The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention state that physical activity doesn’t need to be strenuous to achieve health benefits. In fact, women of all ages gain an advantage by committing 15 to 20 minutes of moderate activity into their daily routine. Keep in mind, if you already suffer from chronic health problems, such as heart disease, diabetes or obesity, check with your doctor before beginning a new physical activity program. LIMIT ALCOHOL INTAKE Women are much more susceptible to health problems brought on by alcohol than men. The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism states this is due to women typically weighing less and retaining less water in their bodies. Here are some of the risks women face from alcohol abuse: • Women who drink are © ADOBE STOCK more likely to develop liver inflammation; • Women are more at risk for alcohol-related heart disease; and • Women who have one drink per day have an increased chance of developing breast cancer than women who do not drink at all. Benefit for Green Mountain United Way Join Green Mountain CrossFit and Green Mountain United Way for a day of weightlifting to raise funds for Green Mountain United Way on Saturday, January 13. Fifty percent of all proceeds go straight to Green Mountain United Way to support the fantastic work they do in and around our local community. Come try for a new personal record and support a great cause. Green Mountain United Way supports communities in Caledonia, Essex, Orange, Orleans, and Washington Counties through work in the areas of health, education and financial stability. “Green Mountain CrossFit is clearly committed to a healthy community, both through their work to help people become fit, but also in their dedication to supporting Green Mountain United Way’s work in our region” says Tawnya Kristen, Executive Director of Green Mountain United Way “This event provides the opportunity to share the load in lifting up the health, education and financial stability of all in our communities through the joy of lifting your personal best!” Tawnya Kristen is also a participant in the Lift Up! Benefit. The format will be a single registration at $50. Registration allows you to establish a one rep max in any or all of six lifts: Shoulder Press, Bench Press, Back Squat, Deadlift, Snatch, Clean & Jerk. This is a non-sanctioned, family-friendly lifting event and is open to all ages and abilities. During last year’s event, many personal bests were reached, we expect more of the same this year with support from an enthusiastic crowd of lifters, CrossFit athletes, and the local community. Lifting is not required to attend, we encourage the general public to show up and cheer on regular folks from the local community doing extraordinary lifts for a great cause.
