OUR FOUNDATION IS ethical production, hard
work, originality, curiousity, and A good
SENSE OF humour. we like a good adventure
AND a great story. we OFTEN drink coffee
that has gone cold AS WE WORK OURSELVES
TO THE BONE. we may not have A brilliant
idea every day, but when one comes ALONG,
we chase IT for all ITS worth. our hope is
that we CAN hook a few, reel them in, refine

The Story of Lions & Cranes
The coastline is filled with stories, characters, smells, sounds, and sights, distinct
from that of the city, countryside, desert, or jungle. Though much has
changed due to modernity and updated technology, there remains an undeniable
draw to the iconography of the sea; anchors, ropes, bells, whistles, old
fishermen. This is the stuff of human endevour, of adventure, and ingenuity.
It is here that Lions & Cranes have chosen to moor, exploring the sometimes
overlooked history and motifs common to a coastline predating GPS and
high-visibility clothing.
The back story of Lions & Cranes is one of two designers with wildly different
backgrounds, sensibilities, and skill sets, whose chance meeting would see
them come together into a partnership exceeding the boundaries of what either
would be capable on their own.
Kurt Lightner is a visual artist who grew up in the corn fields of Iowa, nowhere
near any ocean. After working as an illustrator for magazines in New
York, he moved to Göteborg, Sweden, earning an MFA in design at HDK. This
is where “The City of Lions & Cranes” was born, a nickname for his new harbor
location. Fascinated by its post-industrial nature, Kurt set to hand cutting
and printing motifs inspired by the unique things he encountered in his
new surroundings.
Carl-Johan Victor, a design engineer, entrepreneur, and graduate of KTH
Royal Institute of Technology, spent years working as a design engineer in
the auto industry. He wanted explore developing his own products and was
searching for a designer for his website when he was given Kurt’s contact information.
Their meeting in the summer of 2013 proved transformative.
After browsing through Kurt’s portfolio of linocut prints, Carl-Johan began
to envision the possibilities. Shortly therafter, Calle presented Kurt with a
proposal of taking the aesthetic of his hand-made linocut prints and turning
them into functional households products.The advent of this meeting was the
formation of Lions & Cranes. Though neither could have anticipated what lay
ahead, both recognized the potential and were eager for the challenge. Now,
four years and countless cups of coffee in, Lions & Cranes continues to forge
ahead, with new products and ports-of-call. Commitment to ethical production
is a hallmark of Lions & Cranes’ design process, as is the continual learning
and investigation of life in relation to the sea.
Lions & Cranes is now represented in stores throughout Sweden, as well as
several shops in Norway, Finland, and the UK. Kurt & Calle are VERY excited
about the NEW items in this collection and are happy to now be sharing
them with you, and thank the many who have helped along the way.
The sun is on its way back to it’s zenith, bringing with it the promise of a new
Spring and Summer. Here comes the sun!
