Surroundings and Economy
Running Springs is a mountain community in the
San Bernardino Mountains. It is an inholding in the
San Bernardino National Forest. Situated at the junction
of SR-18 and SR-330, it is a major gateway to
the mountain communities of Lake Arrowhead, Arrowbear,
Green Valley Lake, and Big Bear and is the
closest community to Snow Valley Mountain Resort.
It lies some 16 miles northeast of the city of Highland,
California, up State Highway 330, at an elevation
of 6,030 feet. While there is no primary industry
in Running Springs, there are service industries
geared to the tourist market, as the San Bernardino
National Forest is a highly popular year-round tourist
destination. Also, taking advantage of the forested
setting, the area is home to multiple summer
camps, such as Pali Adventures, which also houses
an outdoor education program known as Pali Institute.
Additionally, Running Springs, together with surrounding
communities, form a bedroom community
for commuters who are employed in San Bernardino
and points beyond who are willing to tolerate the
notorious Southern California commute in order to
President’s Message
As I begin my 10th consecutive term as President of the
Running Springs Area Chamber of Commerce, I’d like to
reflect on just how unique and special the People of our
communities truly are. The Running Springs Communities
have been through many challenges in the past 10 years
including the Slide Fire in 2007, a major nationwide economic
recession as well as the heavy rains that caused
damage to Highway 330 and closed the road for approximately
6 months. While our People and Businesses have
been through such challenging times, we have all worked
together as a Community to make a difference and the
Chamber and Community at large continue to work hard
to make a difference that will lead Arrowbear, Green Valley
Lake and Running Springs well into the future.
Our Communities have plenty of activities and unique
outdoor experiences. During the Fall months, enjoy the
ever changing colors of our local foliage, awesome hiking,
late season fishing and much more. In particular, the new
Running Springs Area Chamber of Commerce will host
its annual Membership Meeting and Installation Dinner at
Snow Valley Mountain Resort on Saturday, October 28.
More details about the Installation Dinner are available online
at runningspringschamber.com and all are welcome to
join us for an evening of great food, networking, entertainment
and fun.
As we move towards Winter, the Chamber will be working
on an all new Marketing Plan and will be applying for
funding from the San Bernardino County Unincorporated
Chambers of Commerce Tourism Incentive Pilot Program.
The goal is to work to strengthen our local businesses
which will make our Communities a better place to live,
work and enjoy for all. Stay tuned to the Chamber’s website
(runningspringschamber.com), our social media channels
and articles in the Mountain Lifestyle newspaper for
the latest updates on our progress.
Best wishes to our local Communitiy and visitors for an
enjoyable Fall season!
Where To Find Fall Color
by Steven Peter
To our friends below in the valleys and along the
coast, trees appear to turn from green to brown and
it may seem like an absence of seasons and color.
For those lucky enough to live in higher elevations in
Southern California, we are given a yearly show in the
fall with rich colors of yellow, orange, and red leaves
before dropping onto the ground. Mostly, the leaves
turn in our local mountains a little later than in the Eastern
Sierra. But, by mid-October to early November,
most have either blown off with the Santa Ana winds
or are just hanging in there and fall days later. Oak
trees are showing their yellow color on Highways 18
and 330 coming up into the mountains.
The higher the elevation, the quicker the leaves
have turned. The phrase ‘turned’ in this sense, means
Don’t miss out on the Chamber’s Annual Installation
Dinner on Saturday, October 28 at Hootman Center. Enjoy
fantastic entertainment, a delicious Prime Rib Buffet
provided by Bacchus Restaurant Group (Blondies) and
an evening of honoring local awards recipients. Dinner
is open to the public. Information is available on the
Chamber’s website. (Photo Credit: Mike Lee)
that it has changed or developed new color. People
who search out color are called ‘leaf peepers’ and usually
traverse areas of higher elevation. In Southern
California, most deciduous trees that are ‘color changers’
are in larger quantity in the mountains. The cooler
climates display the better range in color at the higher
elevations.
When coming up Highway 330, you can spot the
yellow leaves of the oaks that are changing already
along the highway. The drive towards Big Bear Lake
on Highway 18 shows color here and there until you
arrive into Arrowbear Lake and spot the large Quaking
Aspen along the highway. Quaking Aspens glitter silvery
green in the spring and summer, but turn a bright
yellow in the fall.
Approximately
two miles down the
road past Arrowbear
Lake is the
turnoff for Green
Valley Lake. Taking
that road in either
early morning or
late afternoon, the
sun glows through
the yellowing
leaves to give the
appearance of an
otherworldly hue.
Additionally, on a
quiet morning or
late afternoon with
no wind, you might
catch a beautiful
serene view of the
lake with the fall
color surrounding and mirroring it up to the sky. Make
sure you have a camera with you as you don’t want to
miss this scenery.
For the less adventurous, you might travel west on
Highway 18 from Running Springs and visit the Heap’s
Peak Arboretum. A great variety of trees and fall color
will greet you as you walk the easy half mile hike. An interpretive
trail will explain the different trees and plants
native to the San Bernardino Mountains throughout the
hike. Along the way you may see lots of green Bracken
Fern on the hillsides turning brown and hibernating for
the winter.
If you would like to get a glorious 360-degree view, a
quick drive up to Keller Peak and Children’s Forest just
off Highway 18 would be just the ticket. The spectacular
view from Children’s Forest will display the view
Surroundings: from page 2
live above the city's considerable smog and pollution.
Running Springs is a member community of the
Rim of the World, an inhabited stretch of the San Bernardino
Mountains and wholly contained in the San
Bernardino National Forest. The Rim (as it is locally
known) extends from Crestline to Big Bear, a distance
of some 30 miles. Running Springs is served by
Charles Hoffman Elementary in Running Springs, Rim
of the World High School and Mary Putnam Henck Intermediate
School both situated in Lake Arrowhead.
Logging in the San Bernardino Mountains was once
done on a large scale, with the Brookings Lumber
Company operation the largest. It operated on 8,000
acres (32 km2) between Fredalba and Hunsaker Flats
(present-day Running Springs), and extended northward
to Heap's Ranch and Lightningdale (near Green
Valley Lake) between 1899 and 1912. It built a logging
railroad to bring logs to the mill at Fredalba. About
60% of the finished lumber was hauled by wagon down
the steep grades to the Molino box factory in Highland,
CA, which made packing crates for the citrus grown
in the area. The remaining 40% went to the company's
retail lumber yard in San Bernardino. In 1912,
the company dismantled the Fredalba sawmill and
moved much of the machinery to Brookings, Oregon.
RUNNING SPRINGS HISTORY
The mule drawn Log Hauler or “slip tongue” depicts
the rich history of logging in the Running Springs
area, which in 1890 was first named “Hunsaker Flats.”
Immigration to the valley below and the
orange groves of Redlands set the stage for
the logging industry for box crates and building
lumber in the San Bernardino Mountains.
The Highland Lumber Company and later the
Brookings Lumber Company conducted substantial
logging operations from Fredalba to Green Valley
Lake. They even operated a narrow gauge railway
for transporting logs to the mill located in what is now
Fredalba and Smiley Park, directly south of Running
Springs. Lumber was precariously hauled down the
“City Creek Toll Road,” later named Highway 330.
The logging industry gave way to property investors
and in the 1920’s the first community subdivisions
for vacation properties and camps arose. With the continued
population growth of Southern California, these
beautiful San Bernardino Mountains have provided unsurpassed
opportunities for recreation and year-round
living. Come and discover the majesty of the Running
Springs Area, the “Gateway to the San Bernardinos!”
SkyPark at Santa’s Village Gearing Up For The Season!
by Steven Peter
Santa’s Village is turning out to be a premiere destination
and it is starting to have activities on a daily
basis during the days the park is open. The park
packed them in during the three concerts it held for
the Blue Jay Jazz Festival on consecutive Thursday
nights in August of this year.
The park has additionally obtained actors that
are called ‘Northwood Characters’ who are excited
to welcome you back to a nostalgic ‘Christmas in the
Woods’! They will weave stories and will entertain with
fun antics on the November 9th opening of the holiday
season. Opening day is planned to be a day to pull out
all the stops for the park. Additionally, the park will be
open 7 days a week until January 7th.
Pumpkins in the Pines is the park’s contribution towards
Fall and Halloween. Trick or Treating is nightly
from 4-6PM during park open days and on Saturdays
there is a skate night from 5-9PM. Entertainment is
abundant as there is an open mic night on Thursdays
from 6-9PM along with Live Music from local bands.
About SkyPark at Santa’s Village:
SkyPark at Santa’s Village is a North Pole-themed
outdoor adventure park nestled deep in the San Bernardino
National Forest. With attractions, restaurants
and shops in an historic log cabin village, SkyPark provides
guests the opportunity to experience the wonder
of nature as they bike, hike, fi sh or climb in the Sky-
Park Northwoods. During the holiday season, behold
the magic of Santa’s Christmas Village as SkyPark
is transformed into a winter wonderland of fun for the
whole family.
There are 18 historic log buildings in the park that
were renovated from the original Santa’s Village, which
opened on May 28, 1955. SkyPark at Santa’s Village
sits on 230 acres and reaches an elevation of 5,910
feet.
The 30 months of restoration and transformation
of Santa’s Village to the present-day Skypark at Santa’s
Village included the planting of 6,000 indigenous
trees as part of a reforestation project in partnership
with CAL FIRE and several other conservation organizations.
Among the features of the park are SkyPark Adventure
Zipline, which soars high above the park and
through the majesty of the Northwoods; Frozen Falls
Climbing Tower, which has a waterfall, a rare feature
of climbing towers; and the Silver Bells Skating Pond,
the only full-sized, public ice rink in the San Bernardino
Mountains.
CAMPING
Located at the end of
Green Valley Lake Road
(off Hwy. 18) near Running
Springs and Arrowbear
Lake, you’ll climb
the windy road to get to
the small community of
Green Valley Lake. As
you drive through you’ll
find your worries and
stress melting away.
This campground is
filled with huge beautiful
trees that provide a lot of
shade for campers and
its tranquil setting adds
Green Vly Lake Campground to the outdoor experience
that campers seek and appreciate.
The campground, maintained by the U.S. Forest
Service, lies beyond the lake and past the Green
Valley Lake Fire station. Just keep driving through
“town” and you’ll end up at the campground. Relax,
breathe deeply and know that a comforting, tranquil
experience is there to greet you.
There are some requirements that campers
need to know. While there are fire rings in some of the
camping areas, depending on fire restrictions, whichchange
regularly, sometimes the fire rings cannot be
used. Likewise, sometimes riding off-road vehicles is
not allowed inside campground boundaries. “Know before
you go” is recommended by the Forest Service.
You can call (909) 382-2790 for current restrictions
or visit www.fs.fed.us/recreation. The tranquil campground
has tables, flush toilets and water and campers
can use their portable propane stoves.
Campsites are available on a first-come, firstserve
basis. One of the cautions that the Forest Service
gives is that all campers should be aware that
there are bear
signs posted
throughout the
area because,
after all, they
do live on the
mountain.
Always call
ahead to verify
that any of the
campsites are
available and
check with the
closest ranger
station.
HIKING
The Best Hikes Near Running Springs
There are so many great little hiking trails in
the Running Springs area. You can spend weeks
out here in our pretty alpine forests and not hike
the same trails. The very best of these trails
are located at either Keller Peak or Rim Nordic.
If you go for a drive up Keller Peak Road you will
see trails all over the place on both sides of the road.
The most popular trail is Exploration Trail which is well
signed and starts
at the bottom of
Keller Peak Road.
You can start hiking
it here or you
can drive three
miles up Keller
Peak Road. Just
after the road
forks make a
right and there is a large parking area right there
where you can hike downbound on Exploration Trail.
This upper part of the trail winds through a manzanita
forest and has a glorious view of the valley below.
If you enjoy rock climbing, about a mile below the
junction on Keller Peak that takes you to either the
look out tower or the Children’s Forest nature loop
there is a large stack of boulders on the north side
of the road that is great for climbing. If you follow the
trail along the rock face you can climb to the top of
the boulders. This is an excellent place to watch the
sunset (Bring flashlights for the walk down in the dark!)
If you have small children with you, check
out the Children’s Forest nature loop where
the road merges to the left (opposite way from
the lookout tower). This is a nice half mile stroll
through the forest with views of Snow Valley.
Another great hike in Running Springs is Coyote
Rock Trail. This trailhead lies in the very back of the
upper ball field at Charles Hoffman Elementary School.
The first half mile up this trail is incredibly steep. After
that the trail gets a lot easier. You can follow this trail
up to Coyote Rock to check out the view, or follow it
back to Mill Peak and Keller Peak if you take one of the
northern bound legs. This is one of our newer hiking
trails in Running Springs and it leads to some excellent
view points! It is another great one to watch the sunset!
Every year hundreds of hikers from around the
world traverse the 2,650 miles of the Pacific Crest
Trail between Mexico and Canada. It’s not unheard of
to see these folks hitch hiking on the sides of roads
and highways in the early spring months as they have
not seen a city, a grocery store or a hot shower in
weeks sometimes. Because of recent movies like
Wild, the PCT and thru-hiking has become way more
popular in the last few years.
In the Green Valley Lake and Big Bear area we
have many Trail Angels, local people who live close
to towns along the Pacific Crest Trail and help out the
hikers when they are in need of a hot shower, laundry
services or a hot meal. Many of these folks have
spent hours on the trail themselves and many have
thru-hiked the PCT and know just how grueling of a
journey its thousands of miles are. If you happen to be
interested in helping out these hikers or being a trail
angel yourself check out the Facebook group Pacific
Crest Trail Angels.
FISHING
There are two lakes in the area that boast very good
fishing. Green Valley Lake stocks fish on a regular basis
during the fishing season, while Arrowbear Lake is
open mainly Spring and Summer and dries up most
of the time in the fall. Arrowbear stocks fish in the
Spring.
Green Valley Lake is the only lake that allows swimming
in the immediate area. It is 30 minutes closer in
the mountains than Big Bear Lake. It is stocked on a
regular basis during the regular fishing season that
ends around Labor Day.
There are no private boats or float-tubes allowed on
the lake. There are rowboats, paddleboats, and kayaks
available for rent at the boat house (open 6am-8pm)
Price is $15/3hrs.
Fishing is $15.00 for adults, an extra $1 for another
pole (two is max). $8 for children 4-15. Trout are the
main action here. They are stocked regularly by the
DFG and private hatcheries. There are also Bass, Catfish,
and Crappie in the lake. The lake usually freezes
in the winter. No ice fishing is allowed. Information:
(909) 867-2009 and the website, with an in-depth fishing
report, is www.gvlfishing.com.
Hikes and More Hikes
by Lynette Eastwood
National Children’s Forest
One of the most popular hikes in the San Bernardino
Mountains is the hike through the National Children’s
Forest. The total size of the forest is 3400 acres which
includes forests, meadows and some rather large boulders.
It has some of the most beautiful scenery in the
San Bernardino Mountains, being near the top of some
smaller mountains opening unto a bluff with very few
trees. The area was created in 1970, after a fire known
as the Bear Fire, due to the replanting of trees bearing
the names of children. There is a .75 mile Interpretive
Trail at the top of Keller Peak next to the forest and is
still very popular today.
In 1993, the first trail was established by a group
of children from around the country. In addition, there
is a Visitor Information Center, an Environmental Education
Program, a Youth Leadership Volunteer Program,
and an active reforestation program. All this to
teach children how to be stewards of the land through
education and opportunities. Additionally, there are
maps (both hiking and biking), camping information,
and general info on the history of the area. The center
is adjacent to the Deerlick Fire Station on Hwy. 18 in
Running Springs, approximately 1 mile east of Highway
330. The phone to the Visitor Information Center
is (909) 867-5996.
The Sequoia Trail, Heaps Peak Arboretum
The Sequoia Trail at the Arboretum is about a
one-mile loop that is accessible to the physically challenged.
It is easy for all visitors to walk, especially families
with young children in strollers, as well as, older
walkers. A trail guide can be found at a blue box on the
kiosk near the trailhead. Hikers will find trees such as
the Arizona Cypress, Giant Sequoia, Sugar Pine, Knob
Cone Pine, Coulter Pine, Black Oak, Quaking Aspen,
White Fir, and Dogwood. A whole array of wildflowers
are in bloom between March and October.
There are three foot bridges that extend over
seasonal creeks, and a natural seep (Horseshoe
Springs) where wildlife can be viewed, especially birds,
year-round. Another feature on the trail is the cone
boxes that display the cones of the three main species
of pine trees found on the site.
Near the end of the trail are the Giant Sequoias
and Dogwood groves that are spectacular in the
spring. Benches along the trail provide a place to stop
and relax and enjoy the sounds of the forest.
Keller Peak Fire Lookout
Celebrates 90 Years
by Lynette Eastwood
On October 21, 2017, the birthday of Keller Peak
Fire Lookout was celebrated by San Bernardino National
Forest staff members who invited the public to
attend the celebration. Balloons were at the gate leading
up to this historical and beneficial fire lookout built
in 1926. The lookout, road, and peak are named for
Ally Carlin Keller, born in San Bernardino in 1868, who
at one time was an employee of the Forest Service
Keller Peak Fire Lookout, though not the first lookout
built in the San Bernardino National Forest, is the
oldest remaining “original” tower, located three miles
east of Running Springs at an elevation of 7882 feet.
The peak is reached from the Keller Peak road from
Highway 18, 1.5 miles east of Running Springs. It has
a fire lookout, cliffs, and a meadow adjacent. Children’s
Forest is located on the road from the highway to the
peak.
You can view two memorial plaques at Keller Peak
Fire Lookout. The first designates the 1926-built tower
as a historic landmark. The second, located 200 yards
to the west, marks the spot where a B-26 bomber
crashed December 30, 1941. Some of the wreckage
is still visible.
Besides Keller Peak Fire Lookout’s firefighting advantages
for the public’s safety and its historical significance,
the view from the tower is unbelievably fantastic.
There are excellent views of the San Bernardino
Mountains including three lakes: Arrowhead, Gregory,
and Silverwood. On a clear afternoon day, views of the
Pacific Ocean and Santa Catalina Island are also possible.
Left to Right, Dan Morrison, longtime
supporter of the lookout program
along with Pam and George Morey at
Keller Peak lookout base.
The Keller
Peak Fire Lookout
is open to
the public from
9am - 5pm
daily from Memorial
Day to
mid-November.
This lookout is
located east
of Running
Springs on Forest
Road 1N96.
This 5-mile
road is paved
all the way to
the fire lookout.
If you are an
avid hiker there
are several hiking
trails available
for all enthusiasts. The Forest Service also has a
special bike trail as another avenue to reach the tower.
trained volunteers. For information on becoming a
Lakeside-Green Valley Lake’s New Park • Photo by Mike Lee
In Green Valley Lake near the Green Valley
Lake Club House sits Lakeside Park and playground.
The park was installed and opened during the 2016
summer season. The park came about through a longterm
lease agreement with the Green Valley Mutual
Water Company for the plot of land and the play
equipment was purchased by the Park Park District.
The Park District was pleased about the planning and
implementation process. The residents of Green Valley
Lake generously provided their input for the type of
play equipment they wanted to see and were thrilled
about the centralized location and visible public access.
Lakeside Park is a great place for children and
families to play. The Rim Park District encourages everyone
to visit.
Arrowbear Park and Tucker Ballfi eld is a great
place to take family and friends who are visiting. The
park has been the home to the Mountain Softball Ladies
and the annual Arrowbear Lake Lion’s Fishing
Center. The Ball Field has been home to many
baseball and softball groups on the mountain, such
as Mountain Little League, Rim High School, Lake Arrowhead
Christian School, Rim Altitude, Men’s Softball,
and Women’s Softball. After baseball season is
over the back side of the fi eld transforms to Caplinger
Soccer where AYSO practices and plays their games
during the fall season. The Robert Hootman Senior/
Community Center is home to the Running Springs
Area Golden Oaks Seniors and many recreation programs.
The community center may also be rented out
for parties, weddings, gatherings, and formal meetings.
If anyone would like to reserve these facilities or get
more information, please call the Park District offi ce,
Winter Clothing and Boots Needed
Charles Hoffman elementary received a grant from
the Rim Educational Foundation last spring to purchase
2 class sets of snowshoes. One is for upper
grade students and the other set is for the little feet
of the TK-Second Graders. Eight additional pair were
purchased in various adult sizes so volunteers can join
the children! The school plan is to take classrooms of
students out to the ballfi elds next to the school or to
the forest behind the school on snowy days this winter.
There is much research on the physical and educational
benefi ts of exercise. Children usually don’t call it
exercise, rather it is known as ‘play.’ While the school
is in a winter wonderland area, many students can not
afford to go skiing. Snowshoeing is a more affordable
opportunity, especially now that the school owns the
shoes.
CHE is seeking donations of gently worn coats,
snow pants, boots, gloves, and hats. Several closets
are being prepared to organize the clothes students
may use for the day.
CHE is also seeking volunteers to sign up to come to
the school to help students strap on the snowshoes
and strap on their own, going off on a walk with the
children. A 2 and 1/2 hour block of your time would be
appreciated and two classes would benefi t. With thirteen
classes, many volunteers are needed!
Fifth graders, Madison Groff, Samantha Shouse, Scartlet
Tviede, Nola Ruda, Hayden Purkiss, and Jordin
Traweek led the beach-goers in repeat after me songs,
such as Baby Shark!
Beach Party Held at Charles
Hoffman Elementary School
By Marlynn Humphries
Students at CHE celebrated the fi rst thirty days
of school with an Attendance Beach Party! All 195
students who came to school every day attended the
fun party with an ice cream tropical fl oat, beach music,
painted feet which were washed off in wading pools,
and created a souvenir name tag. The school’s attendance
rate for those thirty days was 97.1%! This is
the highest attendance rate for the school. Students
get in the good habit of regular attendance and keeping
up on the concepts taught daily. This special day
marks the half way point in the trimester. Students
who attend 100% of the trimester or only miss one day,
are eligible to attend the Hike with the Principal, held
November 9. Students with 100% attendance for the
year receive a trophy and certifi cates each trimester.
Students who miss 3 days a year, or 95% attendance,
receive a medal for the year.
GREEN VALLEY LAKE
ARROWBEAR LAKE
Arrowbear Lake is an unincorporated community in
San Bernardino County. Its altitude is 6,086 feet, in the
San Bernardino Mountains.
The community of Arrowbear Lake is located east of
Running Springs, off of Highway 18 with a population
of 736. However, the population has been growing in
recent years. The town gets its name from the fact
that it lies half way between Lake Arrowhead and Big
Bear. It is butted against the National Forest with easy
access to many hiking areas along Keller Peak Road.
Arrowbear Lake is home to the Arrowbear Music
camp that has been in operation since 1942. Every
summer the air is filled with evening concerts of budding
musicians.
This small community enjoys a very private environment
due to its off the beaten track location. Annual
events include a fishing derby in May, a 4th of July
celebration, softball games at Tucker Field and other
events throughout the year. If you want a very personal
and private stay, look for rentals in this area.
Running Springs has many Mountain Bike single
track and trail riding opportunities. People come from
all over Southern California to ride at Rim Nordic. They
have an XC Series event that is held May, July, and
August. There is a 15K, 30K and 60K runs that will
be held in June. The Enduro Series is being held on
July, August, and September. Additionally in early December,
there is a one day event which is the Califonia
State Fat Bike Championships will be held here on the
grounds. Rim Nordic has been holding the Pine Cone
Festival here in October and all are invited to this free
event.
Contact Rim Nordic, who hosts races during the summer
season on many weekends. Check the website
www.rimnordic.com for additional information.
Road cycling is also very popular on the challenging
hills and descents in the community. Running Springs
makes for a great rest stop after the very challenging
Hwy 330 climb.
The “Hidden Gem” of the San Bernardino Mountains,
Green Valley Lake is, at 7000´, a higher resort
community than either Lake Arrowhead or Big Bear.
This “best kept secret on the mountain” is secluded
(nearly four miles away from State Highway 18) and
surrounded by National Forest. For all these reasons it
has remained small, picturesque, and uncrowded.
Green Valley Lake has something going on all the
time. For a little town, we sure stay busy. Our town
boasts of a pretty little lake that is stocked often with
Green Valley Lake (cont.from pg. 23)
plentiful fish, and a small beach for swimming.
We have abundant opportunities for hiking, camping,
winter sports, cabin rentals, restaurants, the artisan tour,
summer concerts, Pie Festivals and much more.
Located only 90 minutes away from Los Angeles, Orange,
and San Diego Counties, in the San Bernardino
Mountains, Green Valley Lake attracts visitors seeking
clean air, blue skies, crystal-clear water, and the serenity
and calm beauty of a quiet forested community. Our two
closest neighbors are Arrowbear and Running Springs.
There are hiking trails galore and plenty of opportunities
for bird watching, mountain biking, horseback riding,
and in the winter, cross-country skiing and snowshoeing.
The nine-acre lake is regularly stocked for
fishing, plus there is boating and swimming as well. For
the sports enthusiast, Green Valley Lake offers a beach
volleyball court next to the lake, plus a basketball court
and a tennis court that also can be used for volleyball
or badminton. Barbecue facilities are located under the
trees in the adjoining picnic area. A magnificent public
campground is just down the road with 40 spaces and
clean restrooms.
The visitor can also choose from a number of cabins
for rent. Green Valley Lake has a small downtown area
that hosts a market, two restaurants, a post office, a bait
and tackle shop, a number of real estate offices, and a
community garden. There is also a community church
located at 648 Yukon. Further up Green Valley Lake
Road you will find the Fire Dept. and a local museum.
Green Valley Lake also happens to be a mecca for artists
and musicians. Three times a year (Memorial Weekend,
Labor Day Weekend, and Thanksgiving Weekend)
there is an Artisan Tour in which the local artisans open
up their homes or studios and display their many beautiful
pieces of handmade artwork. Occasionally, the local
musicians get together for a jam. Plus there are five outdoor
concerts during the summer in the garden across
from the lake. For all the many other things to do here,
be sure to check out the Schedule of Events.
First Mountain Bank Expanding
Reach in the Mountains.
On October 5, 2017, First Mountain Bank (FMB) announced
the opening of a new 24/7 ATM, conveniently
located at Big Bear City’s Community Service District,
139 East Big Bear Boulevard, Bear City. With the addition
of this new ATM, First Mountain Bank now has
six ATM locations in the Big Bear, Running Springs
and Lucerne Valley to better serve the mountain communities.
Along with the six ATM locations, FMB has
three branch offices located in Big Bear Lake, Running
Springs, and Lucerne Valley, and will be opening a new
branch office in Lake Arrowhead later this year.
“The purpose of our newest ATM location is to better
serve our customers, and the residents of Big Bear
City. There are now four ATM locations in Big Bear, and
another new ATM site to open in Blue Jay in November.
We are thrilled to be able to offer our customers
convenient access to their money, especially for those
who live or work in the east side of the valley.” stated,
Debbie J. Richardson, Senior Vice President and Director
FMB’s automated branch ATMs offer access to
your money 24 hours-a-day, seven days a week. Other
