A Message from Christine Matis
Chairperson - Huntington Youth Bureau Board (2010)
Franklin D. Roosevelt once said “ We cannot always build the future for our youth but we can build our youth
for the future”. As poignant now as it was then the economic challenges today have placed an unprecedented stress
on communities. Yet, as a community we owe our youth the best it can give. Since it’s founding in 1968, the Huntington
Youth Bureau (HYB) has been the hub of youth services for the greater Huntington community and continues to
strive to provide support to its youth. Through its many programs it has been proactive in assisting and supporting
youth in their growth and development to be caring, responsible and contributing members of society.
The Youth Bureau in conjunction with youth service agencies is located in each school district, and has established
several townwide initiatives to meet the special needs of the youth, their family and the community. The Huntington
Youth Bureau’s many volunteers and staff have served the needs, interests and welfare of youth and continue
to do so. They are essential in identifying local and townwide needs. In addition, volunteers serve on governing
boards of local youth agencies and on town forces advising special townwide projects.
Last year, the greater Huntington community faced many challenges as a result of our economic times. As
government agencies threatened funding to not-for-profits, the Board fought to secure financing for the continued
operation of the Youth Bureau System. It outreached to the community to make a difference in the lives of our youth
by participating on the Huntington Youth Board. In addition, the Town’s commitment and support to our youth was
unwavering.
On behalf to the Huntington Youth Board and myself it has been a privilege to serve with such diverse members
of the community committed to the greater Huntington community. Thank you to our Town Board, HYB, staff,
project and program volunteers and donors that make it possible for every youth to thrive and be successful in their
lives. We are fortunate to live in such a great community!
Since 1968, dedicated volunteers and staff have collaborated together to build Huntington’s
comprehensive system of youth services. The Town of Huntington Youth Bureau
youth services system.
We are grateful for the continued support of the Town Supervisor, Youth Board and
