Did you know that the Traverse is involved in
many exciting offstage activities? This season,
we’d like to introduce you to…
SPOTLIGHT:
CLASS ACT
MUMBAI
Introducing young people to the theatre and
encouraging them to become theatremakers
themselves lies at the heart of the Traverse’s
Creative Learning activities.
Our flagship education project, Class Act,
has been turning secondary school pupils
across Edinburgh into playwrights since 1991.
Now successfully running in Russia and the
Ukraine, in 2018 we’re thrilled to be introducing
Class Act to India for the first time, opening
the eyes and minds of even more young
people to playwriting and creating theatre, as
well as promoting cultural collaboration and
advocating for access to the arts for all.
Working with the Mumbai-based RAGE
Theatre Productions, writers Nicola McCartney
and Stef Smith, along with directors
Gareth Nicholls and Emma Callander, will
collaborate with Indian artists to develop the
playwriting skills of students from the city.
These students, from secondary schools
across Mumbai, will come together to take
part in playwright-led workshops and script
development sessions to write their own
scripts, which will then be performed on stage
by professional actors before a live audience.
We never fail to be excited and energised
by what Class Act’s participants create –
and we can’t wait to hear what those in
Mumbai have to say.
“Class Act is a project which, in my
experience, changes lives for young
people involved. Every time I do the
project it changes mine. I am thrilled to
be part of this team, and look forward to
learning from theatre artists in Mumbai
and most of all the young people we will
work with together.”
Nicola McCartney, playwright
Following the success of Iron and Outlying Islands, awardwinning
The ties that bind can never be broken and the shocking
LOCKER ROOM TALK
By Gary McNair
WED 4 – SAT 7 APR, 7.30PM
shows
Director Orla O’Loughlin
Following overwhelming response from previous runs at
the Traverse Festival, Abbey Theatre, Latitude Festival and
Scottish Parliament, Locker Room Talk returns to continue
a conversation about misogyny and masculinity which
has become even more urgent since its premiere.
Created in response to the Donald Trump’s infamous
“grab them by the pussy” comment, Locker Room Talk is a
provocative exploration of how men speak about women
in men-only spaces, asking if such sexually abusive
rhetoric can really be accepted as mere ‘locker room talk’,
or whether such attitudes are much more ingrained and
drive abusive behaviour.
Writer Gary McNair interviewed hundreds of men from
a wide variety of backgrounds. A selection of these
conversations are performed, verbatim, by a cast of 4 women.
Each performance is followed by a post-show
conversation, giving the audience opportunity to
participate, ask questions, examine the issues raised and
consider ‘where do we go from here?’.
THE DUKE
By Shôn Dale Jones
TUE 3 – THU 5 APR, 8PM
Written and performed by Shôn Dale Jones
From the multi award-winning writer and performer
behind the much-loved Hugh Hughes, The Duke explores
kindness, generosity and the value of what we do. The show
has been produced in aid of Save The Children’s Child
Refugee Crisis and has raised over £46,000 to date.
Funny, poignant and playful, The Duke weaves together
the tragi-comic fate of a family heirloom – a porcelain
figure of The Duke of Wellington, the quandary of a
scriptwriter stretching his integrity and an unfolding
disaster as thousands of children flee their homes.
Blending fantasy and reality, this playful show gently
By Gary McNair
TUE 3 – SAT 7 APR, 1PM; FRI 6 APR, 7PM
A biography of the late Dundonian poet
Sir William Topaz McGonagall, written in
‘almost rhyming verse’ - the only way to
honour the man who has come to be known
as the world’s worst poet. Performed by Gary
McNair, the play charts the poet’s life story
and gets to the heart of the dilemma that
surrounds his legend - is it okay to laugh at
someone’s obvious and relentless failings?
RACHEL’S COUSINS
By Ann Marie di Mambro
Rachel is a successful woman and, frankly,
a bit of a snob. She wants nothing to do
she thinks of as a reckless bunch of benefit
to let her cousins know. She didn’t mean to
let them into her life but they come barging
in anyway, and shake up her tidy life.
MARGARET SAVES SCOTLAND
By Val McDermid
TUE 17 – SAT 21 APR, 1PM; FRI 20 APR, 7PM
Margaret Holt embarked on a holiday
romance with a difference and it
changed her life. Falling in love with
Scotland filled her with a burning desire
to liberate the country from the English
yoke. But what could a nine-year-old lass
from Yorkshire do to make that dream
come true? Join Margaret as she embarks
on the journey of a lifetime.
BUBBLEWRAP
By Hilary Lyon
TUE 1 – SAT 5 MAY, 1PM; FRI 4 MAY, 7PM
It’s one of the ten most stressful things
we do apparently, and we do it on average
seven times in a lifetime, but moving
home is not just about packing and
unpacking stuff. Whilst wading through
the contents of seemingly endless boxes,
Kirsty and Alex unwittingly start to
unwrap their lives. Can they withstand
the emotional unpacking; and what is
lurking in that box marked ‘Pandora’?
Director Zinnie Harris
I know my boy. I’d know if something had happened to him.
Maddy and Rory are devoted parents to 3-year-old
Joshua, committed to keeping him happy and safe. But
when an everyday visit to a supermarket café turns into
a far more troubling incident, their trust even in those
closest to them is shattered. Fear and doubt consume
them, until they reach a savage breaking point.
Gut is a taut psychological thriller that explores who
we can trust with our children. And whether it’s more
dangerous not to trust at all.
Written by Fringe First award-winning playwright
Frances Poet (Adam), Gut was shortlisted for the
Bruntwood Prize for Playwriting, and is directed by
award-winning Traverse Associate Director Zinnie Harris.
A snake will always find a way in. And he has. We’ve been
sleeping so long that he’s had a feast… And this snake has been
devouring them all whilst you and I are asleep in the next room.
We’ve been standing on their tiny bones the entire time.
With unseen ‘little mouths’ and the belching fumes of
the local refinery as a backdrop, we find ourselves in
exchanging extraordinary and fantastic stories… until
