HOW TIME FOR GOD BEGAN
Jihyeon’s story
Hi, my name is Jihyeon and I am from
South Korea. I arrived in January and
volunteered at Kingsley Hall Church and
Community centre. I worked with people
from the local community, mainly young
people, as well as people who struggle
with alcohol, drugs and homelessness.
I have so many highlights and memories
from the year, however I will remember
the 6th of December for the rest of
my life. It was right at the end of my
volunteering year, and I had planned
to go for some food with my three
flatmates. When I got to the restaurant
18 of my work colleagues were waiting
for me and calling my name. I was so
shocked and surprised I burst into tears!
Apparently, they had been planning my
special surprise for two months! It was
so special to know that they valued me
and my work.
‘Discovery’ is the word I would use to
describe my year. I learnt so much about
my personality, what my strengths are,
and how to overcome my weaknesses.
I discovered more of who God is; God
always showed me the way – even when
times were challenging he really is a
Good Father and a Shepherd.
My year with Time for God really
has been a precious one! My life
has changed so much through this
experience, and I am really looking
forward to seeing what God has for
me and my life.
Since its conception in 1965, Time for
God has had the pleasure of shaping
thousands of lives of people from all
over the world, it has seen millions
of volunteering hours invested into
fantastic local Christian projects and
communities in the UK.
We have moved a long way from our
humble beginnings. Time for God
founder Rev. Bryan Gilbert recalls a
train journey to a Baptist youth rally in
Leicester during which the idea for a
volunteering charity evolved.
So much has changed since that train
journey, but what remains the same is
the passion and desire to see young
adults equipped, invested into and
empowered to be all they can be.
As Bryan reflected in one interview ‘The
difference one person in the right place
can make to future generations – This is
God’s work!’
More than fifty years after this train ride,
Time for God continues to grow from
strength to strength.
