REFORMS IN SERBIAN<br />
LOCAL MUNICIPALITIES<br />
<strong>Swe</strong>dish-Serbian cooperation is embodied in various societal spheres,<br />
one of them being local municipalities. Through projects funded by<br />
<strong>Swe</strong>den, Serbia’s local authorities are developing into a more efficient<br />
system adapted to European standards. Counselor Ola Anderson<br />
attended a conference on the 4 October dealing with precisely this topic.<br />
A regulatory reform regarding local governance is currently being<br />
engendered which will lead to the standardization of 188 procedures<br />
in Serbian local municipalities.<br />
We strongly believe<br />
that local governance<br />
capacities need to be<br />
improved in order to<br />
adequately respond<br />
to the new<br />
requirements of the<br />
EU integration. It is<br />
not only because of<br />
the fact that a major<br />
share in the laws and<br />
regulations coming<br />
out of the Acquis is to be implemented at the local level, but also because<br />
municipalities are the ‘first instance’ citizens are addressing in most of the<br />
contacts they have with the administration of one country.<br />
