In this digital age of refined audio, engaging graphics and mood enhancing lighting people expect, and even demand, such attributes wherever they go. From an event organiser’s perspective, deficient audio, inappropriate and ineffective lighting, and poorly orchestrated stage management, leads to disappointed audiences who are deprived of a positive experience, and they will remember that for a long time. Oakey and District Arts Council have secured a grant from Toowoomba Regional Council to conduct a two-day workshop in lighting and audio production based in Oakey’s Cultural Centre. The workshop will start on Saturday, February 3. Limited places are available for this hands-on opportunity. Tuition will be provided by two members of Toowoomba’s Empire Theatre technical team. Glorious book launch at Pioneer Village on Australia Day Author Margaret Deacon will be launching her first book at Highfields Pioneer Village on Australia Day. Aptly named Glorious, her book is a recreation of her grandmother Lizzie Smith’s journey to Tasmania in 1914. Margaret was excited to have discovered the diary of her grandmother over 100 years later, the research and re-creation of her journey to Tasmania from Queensland delves into Lizzie’s adventures with her friends and her mother during their 38- day holiday. Margaret, pictured, said, “Many questions remain unanswered. Why did Lizzie decide to maintain a diary for this trip, despite not keeping one before or after? Why did the group decide to travel so soon after the outbreak of World War I, and why to Tasmania?” In 1914 holidays were expensive, their trip included a first-class passage on the SS Manuka from Sydney to Hobart. Lizzie’s diary displays her humble origins as a farmer’s daughter. There are two changes set to happen in the Warrego Highway Upgrade Program ahead of the Australia Day long weekend.
