Household Hazardous Waste<br />
Any hazardous waste (old paint, car batteries, oil, dry cell batteries,<br />
cleaners, propane cylinders, aerosol cans, antifreeze, flammable, etc)<br />
can be taken to the Household Hazardous Waste Site at 122 Patterson<br />
Cres., Carleton Place.<br />
The site is open on Saturdays from 8am-12pm during the months of<br />
June, July and August. This is a free service to all Smiths Falls<br />
residents, but you may be required to show identification and proof of<br />
residency to be admitted. Visit www.makethedrop.ca for an extensive list<br />
of materials that can now be recycled through the Orange Drop program<br />
and all local ‘take back’ partners. We are recycling batteries at the<br />
Library, Arena and Town Hall.<br />
Construction Waste<br />
Construction waste is not collected at curbside by the town. The REAL<br />
Deal Reuse Store will accept good quality drywall, lumber and other<br />
construction materials. The nearest approved collection facility for<br />
construction waste is Glenview Iron & Metal.<br />
Garbage<br />
Garbage Tags: Each week you can put out two complimentary<br />
bags of garbage, any additional bag will require a tag. Tags are<br />
$3.00 per tag.<br />
Large items require two tags. They include: furniture, kitchen<br />
appliances, and items that do not fit in a garbage bag. You must<br />
contact the Town in order for these items to be picked up.<br />
Any carpet must be cut into 6 foot lengths and tied in a<br />
manageable bundle. Any metal items are subject to special<br />
pickup. This pickup occurs during the last Friday in each month<br />
unless otherwise noted in the calendar.<br />
Fridges and freezers must have a Freon Free sticker prior to<br />
removal. This can be done by the following businesses:<br />

A provincial program now places the responsibility of used tire<br />
disposal onto the manufacturers and importers of tires. Visit<br />
www.ontariots.ca for an extensive list of local partners.

Disposal of paints and stains can go to Home Hardware in Perth.<br />
Paint cans need to be wet inside with 2 inches of material in<br />
bottom of can.<br />

Electronic waste items can be recycled easily at many facilities<br />

Acceptable items for recycling include: monitors, TV’s, desktop<br />
computers, lap tops, computer accessory printers, copiers,<br />
telephone answering machines, cell phones, audio/video devices<br />
and camcorders. No air conditioners or microwaves unless in<br />
good order for re-use option.<br />
Composting<br />
Compost Site: open Saturdays from 8:00am-4:00pm from May<br />
12th to November 24th. The site is located along Highway 43<br />
(east of Hillcrest Cemetery).<br />
All leaves must be in brown paper bags and free from garbage.<br />
Brush must be bundled and no branches larger than 4inches<br />
(10cm) in diameter will be accepted.<br />
Feel free to take some free compost for your gardens while<br />
supplies last. Backyard composters are available for purchase at<br />
Town Hall including delivery!
