VOLLEYBALL CAPTURES 

FIRST NATIONAL TITLE 

IN PROGRAM HISTORY 

On December 2, the No. 1-ranked Lindsey Wilson College volleyball 

team capped off a perfect season with a 3-1 win over No. 4 

Dordt (Iowa). The championship match of the 2017 NAIA Volleyball 

National Championship was held at the Tyson Events Center 

in Sioux City, Iowa. 

Lindsey Wilson finished a perfect season at 35-0. It is the first undefeated 

season since Park (Mo.) in 2014. The Blue Raiders end 

the season having lost just five sets for the entire season.

From the President’s Desk 

When I reflect on Lindsey Wilson College’s 114 years of 

service, one theme that emerges is that this college is thriving 

today because of the giants who have gone before us. LWC 

has evolved into an outstanding mission-driven liberal arts college 

because of incredibly loyal alumni, friends and dedicated 

faculty and staff who believe in the power to change lives 

through a values-centered 

education. 

When I reflected on 

this, I was reminded of 

the contributions made 

by the giants who 

helped build a strong 

foundation at LWC, beginning 

with Catherine 

Wilson, whose estate 

gift founded a school in 

memory of her late 

nephew and stepson.

friend, the late Doug Moseley, who died Nov. 8. Doug and his 

precious wife, Betty Jean, served LWC from 1959-70, and 

even after they left the college remained loyal supporters of 

our students for more than four decades. In 2013, the Moseleys 

gave their collection of more than 480 books about U.S. presidents 

to the Katie Murrell Library. The Moseleys also established 

the Doug and Betty Jean Moseley Endowed Scholarship 

in 2002, which has helped numerous students realize the 

dream of earning a college education. 

In this issue of the President’s Annual Report, you will also 

read about other modern-day giants at LWC. People such as 

Daya Singh Sandhu, who is a distinguished professor of counseling 

and director of research in our School of Professional 

Counseling. Daya recently received a Fulbright award to continue 

his 15-year research about suicide awareness and prevention 

in his homeland of India. 

Another modern-day giant is Emiley Button, who was 

named director and division chair of the nursing and health department 

at the start of the 2017-18 school year. Emiley’s leadership, 

her passion for helping students, and her knowledge 

about emerging trends in healthcare will strengthen our already-outstanding 

nursing program. 

It’s because of the contributions made by faculty members 

such as Daya and Emiley that students are drawn to LWC. Students 

want to study under faculty who are not only scholars in 

their field but also are committed to serving the educational 

needs of every student, every day. 

Another modern LWC giant is my mentor, John B. Begley. 

This college continues to benefit from the legacy of his leadership 

as the college’s sixth president. Doc joined me on Oct. 18 

LWC President William T. Luckey Jr. congratulates Lileana Pearson (pg.

for the 20th anniversary of the dedication of the John B. Begley 

Chapel. The LWC community gathered on a beautiful autumn 

day to celebrate a structure that has become the symbol 

of the college’s mission and values. 

In a wonderful keynote address, he reminded us that Lindsey 

Wilson is a place where we “move mountains.” I’ve included 

excerpts from his talk to remind us that this college is 

more than a collection of buildings and people. Rather, it’s a 

community united under one purpose -- to change lives 

through the power of a values-centered education. And the reason 

we can serve students’ needs in the second decade of the 

21st century is because of the giants who established and led 

this college for more than a century. 

Thank you to everyone who continues to support this college 

and its mission to serve the educational needs of every 

student, every day. Because of your love, prayers and support, 

our students stand firmly on the shoulders of giants.

YOU CAN MOVE MOUNTAINS 

“For truly, I say to you, if you have faith as a grain of mustard seed, and say to 

the mountain, ‘move,’ the mountain will move; and nothing will be impossible to you.” 

Matthew 17:14-21 

Given by Dr. John B. Begley, the sixth president of 

Lindsey Wilson College at the chapel service on 

Oct. 18, 2017 commemorating the 20th anniversary 

of the dedication of the John B. Begley Chapel. 

There are lots of chapels and worship centers on college and 

university campuses, but I submit to you that you will not 

find a chapel or worship center on any college or university 

campus with a more compelling purpose than this chapel. 

Having this building named in honor of me was far more 

than I desired and more than I deserved, but it means more 

to me than I could ever explain. 

In keeping with the purpose of the chapel, I turn to 

Matthew 17:20: 

For truly, I say to you, if you have faith as a grain of 

mustard seed, and say to the mountain, ‘move,’ the 

mountain will move; and nothing will be impossible to 

you. 

This is one of the most fascinating passages of scripture in 

the New Testament. 

Back in 1977, during my first year as president, I knew that 

Lindsey Wilson College had giant mountains that needed to 

be moved. We only had 381 full-time students enrolled. 

We only had 75 resident students. Our total annual operating 

budget was $600,000. The buildings and grounds were in 

deplorable condition. We were a college that many people 

thought would not survive. 

I picked this text because it speaks to the situation that Lindsey 

found itself in 1977, and even though the mountains are 

different today, there are still mountains that need to be removed. 

That is the world of higher education everywhere. 

And, for what it is worth, most of us here today have some 

mountains we face as individuals that are mountain size and 

need to be moved. 

One day Jesus and a few of his close friends, after an exciting 

and memorable time together, were returning to more 

ordinary routines when they were confronted by the father 

of a sick youngster. The word was out that Jesus healed people; 

in fact, his followers were imitating him and the father 

had first gone to them. He had asked them for help, but they 

had been unable to deliver the goods. They had tried to heal 

the boy and failed. 

So the father, as soon as he saw Jesus, ran to him and 

begged for help. Jesus was surprised and a little disappointed 

at the ineffectiveness of his disciples, but he was 

unfailingly generous toward anyone who needed help so he 

told the father to bring the boy to him. Then the scripture 

said, “The boy was cured instantly.” 

Later, after the boy and his father and most others were 

gone, the disciples privately had a question for Jesus. “Why 

couldn’t we do it?” They had failed but they didn’t know 

why. 

And Jesus said, “You should have been able to.” What he 

was saying was that what it took and what they lacked was a 

spiritual resource equally available to all. “For truly I say to 

you, if you have faith as a grain of mustard seed, you will

say to this mountain, ‘move,’ and it will move; and nothing 

will be impossible to you.” 

FAITH IS A BASIC NECESSITY OF LIFE. I am not sure 

that Jesus was saying that anything is possible if you believe 

or if you have faith. As far as I am concerned, when Jesus 

said, “If you say to the mountain, ‘move,’ the mountain will 

move,” it was simply his way of saying that almost nothing 

is possible unless you believe. 

Unless you have some kind of faith, some kind of expectation, 

some kind of commitment in advance -- almost nothing 

is possible. 

A second thing this incident suggests is the importance of 

faith in ourselves. As much as anything else that was what 

the disciples’ trouble was. They had seen Jesus heal people. 

They knew it could be done. They knew the general procedure. 

They believed in God. 

But they weren’t quite sure of themselves; they probably 

mumbled a few words, made a cryptic sign or two with their 

hands, and then peeked out of their eye, half-hoping and 

half-fearing the result. And of course, nothing happened. 

Their own doubt paralyzed their abilities, as it so often does. 

Unfortunately, many of us are victims of low self-esteem. 

We have lost faith in ourselves. We have mountains we need 

to overcome. 

All of us could benefit from a stronger faith in ourselves. 

All of us have mountains we need to move. And “If you 

have faith as a grain of mustard seed, and say to the mountain 

‘move,’ the mountain will move.” 

The chief thing toward which this passage of scripture 

points, is the importance of having FAITH IN GOD. That in 

itself is a well-worn phrase. But we must not minimize that 

in any way. So let me say that we must have an “inner companionship 

with God.” If there are mountains in your life 

that need to be moved, then faith in God is a critical component 

to getting those mountains moved. 

That is what Jesus had supremely that everyone else in the 

story lacked. None had that continuous close, intimate sense 

of and companionship with God that Jesus had. 

So, let me suggest to you that you consider the importance 

of recognizing that faith is a basic necessity of life. And let 

us realize the importance of believing in ourselves. And let 

us make plans to be men and women of faith. Let us exercise 

faith in ourselves and faith in God. Because if we have 

faith as a grain of mustard seed, and say to the mountain 

“move” the mountain will move for nothing will be impossible 

to you if you believe. 

Grace V. Watkins said, 

“As near as April Green to a hill 

As petals of gold to a daffodil, 

As near as the sunlight is to the sod 

So near to the human heart is God.” 

“Our God, in the next few moments we want to find you, to 

know that you are. Because of the hurry and worry of our 

lives, many of us do not know you very well. Come down 

to us, O’ God, and we will reach up to you.”

Button Named Director 

and Division Chair of 

the Nursing & Health 

Department

Nursing runs in 

Emiley Button’s blood. 

The Kentucky native comes from a family of nurses, and she 

has a passion for teaching the profession to others. At the start 

of the 2017 fall semester, Button was named director and division 

chair of the LWC Nursing and Health Department. 

“My mom is a nurse and I have cousins, aunts and other 

family members who are also nurses – so it’s in my blood,” said 

Button. “I’ve always enjoyed helping people, starting as a certified 

nurse and on through to becoming a nurse practitioner – I 

realized I had a love for learning and I feel like I’ve been in 

school my whole life.” 

Button also knows what it takes to start a nursing program. 

In 2009, she helped LWC establish its nursing program, working 

behind the scenes to prepare the college for its first healthcare 

degree. 

She attended meetings, learned policy, conducted research 

and filed paperwork to ensure that LWC was ready to launch a 

nursing program that met the rigorous standards of the Kentucky 

Board of Nursing and the Commission on Collegiate 

Nursing Education.

role in bringing a nursing program to a 

part of Kentucky that desperately needs 

well-rounded, highly prepared nurses,” 

Button said. 

Button’s professional vita includes 

more than eight years in the nursing field, 

mainly in telemetry and long-term care. 

Those experiences make her an ideal fit 

for a program in which experiential learning 

and critical thinking are at its foundation. 

“The biggest part of my teaching philosophy is the importance 

of real-world interaction with the students,” said Button. 

“I like to bring real-life scenarios into the classroom, whether it 

be through examples of my experiences or their personal practice. 

I use the labs we have on campus as often as I can because 

when a student has the opportunity to physically do the concepts 

we’ve been talking about in class, it really clicks for 

them.” 

LWC freshmen begin as pre-nursing majors. Those who 

meet the program’s rigorous academic standards are admitted to 

the nursing program at the end of their freshman year. LWC 

nursing majors graduate with a bachelor of science degree in 

nursing, which Button said gives them several advantages. 

“The value of a four-year nursing degree means better pay 

and higher professional advancement,” she said. 

LWC students also benefit from an education grounded in 

the liberal arts, which Button said gives them a more wellrounded 

educational experience. 

“The Lindsey Wilson students I have worked with are all 

starved for education, and they all have that relentless drive to 

be nurses,” she said. 

Button said LWC’s nursing program is unique in Kentucky 

because of the high number of first-generation college students 

enrolled in the program. 

“A lot of our nursing students are first-generation students, 

and we’re helping them fulfill their dreams,” 

she said. “Not only are we helping the public 

by educating competent, compassionate 

nurses, but we’re also helping the students 

become better people professionally and personally. 

To me, that’s amazing.” 

And Button said the dedication of the 

LWC nursing faculty is unmatched. 

“I am totally impressed with how much 

extra time and energy our faculty give to the 

students,” said Button. “It is not uncommon 

for our faculty, outside of class time, to arrange study sessions 

where they’ll study with the students and be available to clarify 

or answer questions when they’re not required to do so. No 

other nursing program I know of does that.” 

A native of Glasgow, Ky., Button earned undergraduate degrees 

in nursing from Northern Kentucky University, followed 

by a master’s degree and then a doctorate in nursing from Western 

Kentucky University. She has been a family nurse practitioner 

since 2003. She was an instructor in LWC’s nursing 

program from 2009-15. 

“I left Lindsey Wilson in 2015 to get my doctorate,” she 

said. “My plan was to practice full-time and maybe move up 

the ladder in the company I was involved with. But then I got 

the call from Lindsey Wilson about the director’s position, and 

I knew it was in God’s plan that I come back and continue my 

career here.”

Professor Receives 

Third Fulbright Award

More than a career, 

a “personal mission.” 

Dr. Daya Singh Sandhu has devoted a good part of his research 

trying to lower the suicide rates in his native country of 

India, the “suicide capital of the world.” 

Recently, Sandhu was selected to receive the 2017-18 Fulbright-Nehru 

Academic and Professional Excellence Award. 

It’s the third Fulbright award for Sandhu, who is an LWC 

counseling professor and the college’s director of research. In 

November, Sandhu began a six-month fellowship to research 

suicide prevention and awareness at Punjabi University in Patiala, 

India. 

“There is a need for an awakening about depression in 

India,” said Sandhu. “There is no suicide awareness in India. 

Secrecy and stigma are associated with mental health issues and 

depression.” 

Sandhu used his first Fulbright award in 2002 to create 

awareness about suicide. His goal was to change the dialogue 

about behavior and emotional illness in India. When Sandhu returned 

in 2010, thanks to a second Fulbright award, his focus 

was on suicide prevention and he conducted a cross-cultural 

study for people from ages 19-24. 

“This time I’ll be taking a more focused look at how two 

cultures and two nations view the problem of suicide in different 

ways,” he said. “There is a big difference in the way individuals 

cope with daily problems in Eastern and Western 

society.” 

Sandhu said that although suicide is a world-wide problem, 

the reasons for committing suicide and the ways in which college 

students commit suicide are different across cultures and 

countries. 

“Suicide is rising among college students,” said Sandhu. 

“There is intense pressure on academic achievement in India. 

And the values system is different. The focus is not on individual 

success but on improving the status of an entire family. 

Such pressures are often compounded by relationship problems 

or the lack of job opportunities.” 

Sandhu’s interest in suicide awareness and prevention became 

“a professional mission” after two close friends lost sons 

to suicide. 

“If you can save one person’s life or one parent from experiencing 

a tragedy like this, I think you have done something,” he 

said. 

As part of his research, Sandhu has discovered an acute 

shortage of trained mental health professionals in India. 

“Psychology is an established field in India but no one is

practicing,” said Sandhu. “What I’m trying to do is introduce 

the topic of professional counseling as a discipline so the people 

can start practicing.” 

In 2010, Sandhu worked with the Fulbright Commission, 

Guru Nanak Dev University in Amritsar, India, and the United 

States-Indian Educational Foundation to found the Indian Association 

of Mental Health Counselors. He has also developed 

programs to train more mental health professionals and open 

counseling centers throughout India. 

“India is the suicide capital of the world,” Sandhu said. “Depression 

seems to be everywhere and resources are limited. We 

have to change the way that people cope with their problems.” 

Sandhu grew up in rural northwest India and is pioneer in 

multicultural counseling. He has published nearly two dozen 

books, more than 50 articles and provided editorial work to several 

professional journals. As LWC’s School of Professional 

Counseling Director of Research, he is responsible for guiding 

faculty research and working with graduate students in the college’s 

doctoral program. Sandhu holds six graduate degrees, including 

a doctor of counselor education.

Dawson Cunningham and Kaye Bowman of Jamestown, 

Kentucky, know how travel can change a person’s life. That’s a 

big reason they decided to support the Lindsey Wilson College 

Singers’ travel program. 

Combined with her long-time friendship with Lindsey Wilson 

Associate Professor of Music and Director of Choral Programs 

Gerald Chafin, Bowman said that supporting the Lindsey 

Wilson Singers was a natural thing for them to do. 

“We have a lot of opportunities to give, but supporting the 

Lindsey Wilson Singers is something that touched me personally,” 

said Bowman. “I’ve known Gerald for a long time because 

he was the music minister at Columbia Baptist Church. 

Gerald recognized that Dawson and I travel a lot and that I have 

a musical background. For that reason, he approached me about 

supporting the Singers. Dawson and I discussed it, and we 

agreed that it was something that we’d love to do.” 

For more than 20 years, the Lindsey Wilson Singers have 

toured throughout the United States and Europe, giving concerts 

in more than two dozen states and six countries. Members 

of the Lindsey Wilson Singers often credit the tours as lifechanging 

experiences. 

In fact, travel is one of the things that brought Cunningham 

and Bowman together. 

After his first wife died in 2007, Cunningham decided to 

meet someone that he could spend time and travel with. 

“Though I lived in Ohio I also owned a lake house here in 

Jamestown,” said Cunningham. “I signed up with Match.com 

and decided that I wanted to meet someone that I could spend 

some time with. I decided to enter Jamestown’s ZIP Code because 

I owned a home here.” 

Cunningham said that one thing that struck him about Kaye 

was that travel is also close to her heart. 

“Kaye’s profile said she’d like to be anywhere she’d never 

been,” said Cunningham. “After I saw that, the rest was history!” 

Adair County native Kaye Bowman did not attend Lindsey 

Wilson. But during her formative years in Columbia, she spent 

countless moments on the college’s campus that helped shape 

her understanding of the important role of Lindsey Wilson 

plays in the region. 

“My mother attended Lindsey Wilson College,” said Bowman. 

“She went on to further schooling in Richmond and met

Salzburg, Austria. In addition to performing at the college's 

major events, the LWC Singers also give several 

public concerts during the school year and take a 

spring tour to a U.S. region. The LWC Singers have 

also performed on trips to France, Italy, England and 

Canada. 

my father. I was raised in Columbia, and I can remember attending 

a pre-school program that was held in a small building 

on LWC’s campus. In elementary school, I can remember performing 

in a play at the V.P. Henry Auditorium. I can even remember 

doing several things throughout high school on the 

campus. I’ve just always been aware of Lindsey Wilson and it’s 

a part of my life.” 

When Bowman was a junior in high school, her family 

moved to Texas, where she also attended college and majored 

in music. After living in several places after college, Bowman 

settled back in Kentucky in 2000. 

“In college, my love and passion was the choir,” Bowman 

said. “To have the opportunity to travel with the choir was just 

something I will never ever forget. This is personal for me. It’s 

not only the travel element but it’s also the music. I understand 

the first time feeling of travel on a plane.” 

Although Cunningham doesn’t have a background in music, 

he says that he was attracted to LWC because it’s similar to 

where he attended college. 

“I’m originally from Northeastern Ohio, and I graduated 

from the University of Mount Union,” said Cunningham. “It’s a 

small liberal arts, United Methodist-affiliated college and very 

similar in size to LWC. I think that my enthusiasm for giving to 

Lindsey Wilson has a lot to do with the fact that it’s a smaller 

school like my own. That coupled with the fact that we are enabling 

them to do things that they might not otherwise experience. 

It’s very important to give people the opportunity to learn 

outside of the classroom.”

Lileana Pearson ’17 Earns Early 

Acceptance to Graduate School

“I knew I needed to make 

my own opportunities and 

stand out.” 

A 2017 Lindsey Wilson College graduate received early acceptance 

to the Syracuse University S.I. Newhouse School of 

Communication to study broadcast and digital journalism. 

Adair County native, Lileana Pearson, completed a bachelor’s 

degree in media studies with a minor in communication in 

only three years from LWC. 

Pearson, who was the editor of the college newspaper 

Raiderview, says she knew she had to be an industrious selfstarter 

if she intended to pursue a career in the highly-competitive 

field of broadcast and digital journalism. 

“I knew right away that attending college in a small town 

meant that if I really wanted to go to the next level with my education 

– I needed to do everything I could to make the experience 

as meaningful as it could be,” Pearson said. “I needed to 

make my own opportunities and stand out. It was really important 

to build up my resume during my time at LWC so I could 

say I did everything I possibly could to make myself the best 

candidate for whatever I decided to do after college.” 

During her three years at LWC, Pearson was involved in several 

clubs and organizations. Along with the college newspaper, 

she was a part of the Student Government Association and 

LWC Campus Kitchen. She also worked multiple part-time jobs 

and completed two internships in radio and journalism. 

“Everyone at LWC is so supportive. When I told my professor, 

David Goguen, I wanted to graduate in three years, he said 

I could do it,” said Pearson. “When I said I wanted to get my 

broadcast degree at the best graduate school in the country, he 

said I could do it.” 

In recognition of her contributions and accomplishments 

while a student at LWC, Pearson was honored with an L3 Leadership 

award and two outstanding achievement awards in journalism. 

“Lindsey Wilson gives you an environment with the flexibility 

to design your college experience in a way that best suits 

your career goals,” Pearson said. 

Pearson’s work ethic and diligence paid-off when she was 

accepted into the top communication graduate program in the 

country – Syracuse University S.I. Newhouse School of Public 

Communication. Pearson is one of only 32 students accepted to 

the highly-competitive broadcast and digital journalism program. 

“The broadcast program is small. There are only 32 students, 

so the acceptance rate is very low,” Pearson said. “I applied because 

it was my dream school, not because I knew that I was 

100% going to get in. I’m a doer and not a tester, so I knew that 

I needed a program that put more stake on physically doing the

program. She earned a bachelor’s degree 

from LWC in three years. 

work, and not so much on written exams. When I saw that 

Syracuse was a well respected, big school with a small, projectbased 

program – I knew that’s where I needed to be.” 

Since starting at Syracuse in July, Pearson has volunteered 

with the local National Pubic Radio (NPR) affiliate station and 

covered several news events, such as the mayoral race in Syracuse. 

Pearson says Lindsey Wilson supported her educational journey 

by pushing her to be her best and instilling the confidence 

she needed to apply to a highly-selective graduate school. 

“Lindsey Wilson prepared me by providing every opportunity 

I needed to explore my interests and my wants. LWC put in 

my path the people who told me I could do anything I set my 

mind to do. When I applied to Syracuse, I was the only person 

who ever doubted that I was going to get in. I wouldn’t be 

where I am now had it not been for the opportunities and the 

encouragement given to me by Lindsey Wilson College.”

Swan Finds Inspiration For 

An Upright Life Through 

Personal Hardships 

Professor of Psychology and Religion and Dean of the 

Chapel Terry Swan’s most recent book helps readers learn to 

“live ordinary lives extraordinarily well.” 

Swan recently published a sequel to his 

2003 best-seller, What In The World Am I 

Doing Here? His newest work, An Upright 

Life: Who Am I Becoming? is for those 

who “want to make a life, not just a living.” 

“This book is primarily about character,” 

said Swan, “It’s not about the person 

you are as much as it is the kind of person 

you’re becoming, which is infinitely more

Swan said he planned to write a sequel to What In The 

World Am I Doing Here? for some time, but a personal accident 

accelerated the process. 

“I was scheduled to go on sabbatical in 2014,” he said, “But 

on Oct. 27, 2014, I got into a motorcycle accident and I broke 

my leg in three places. I was on my back for 12 weeks before I 

even started physical therapy. I was injured so badly I didn’t 

know if I’d be able to walk again. So I started my study early.”

During those weeks on his back, Swan said he reflected on 

his injury and it changed the direction of his book. 

“I started thinking about Martin Luther, 

who when he had a severe illness for a 

year in bed, he used that time to translate 

the Bible,” said Swan. “So I thought I’d 

start my sabbatical early and I ultimately 

changed the direction and theme of the 

book.” 

He also found inspiration for the book’s 

title. 

“I had a realization, which I believe was 

a God moment, that as much as I wanted 

to walk uprightly again, that I even more so had the desire to 

be an upright person,” he said. “That’s where the title came 

from -- it was just a spark of realization that your life can be an 

object lesson that you can learn from.” 

Swan is the author of 25 books, including two best-sellers: 

What In The World Am I Doing Here? (2003) and The Balance 

Book (2010). An Upright Life is available from online book 

sellers and also from the LWC Bookstore.

Notable Accomplishments 

2016-17 

The 2016-17 school year opened with an impressive 

2,505 students and concluded by 

awarding 282 undergraduate and graduate degrees 

during the college’s 105th commencement 

ceremony. Combined with the 407 

degrees awarded at last winter’s commencement 

ceremony, the Lindsey Wilson Class of 

2017 was a record 689 students making it the 

largest graduating class in school history. 

In November 2016, a two day-challenge by 

Adair County native and Lindsey Wilson 

Board of Trustees Chair Allan Parnell helped 

raise more than $416,765.59 for scholarship 

aid. The campaign attracted more than 1,930 

unique gifts. 

LWC Theatre Program, under the direction of 

Assistant Professor of Theatre Robert Brock, 

presented three fall productions followed by 

two plays in the spring. The 2017 spring season 

featured a production of William Shakespeare’s 

A Midsummer Night’s Dream. 

For the second consecutive year, LWC and the 

city of Columbia held a Coming of Age Ceremony 

for international students studying 

abroad at LWC. Traditionally, the Coming of 

Age Ceremony – also known as Seijin no Hi – 

is held throughout city halls in Japan every 

January. Four LWC students from Japan were 

recognized during the ceremony held on January 

29. 

More than 70 aspiring entrepreneurs from 

Kentucky's colleges and universities were on 

the campus of Lindsey Wilson College in 

March for the Idea State U regional competition. 

Open to any student from a Kentucky college 

or university, the event invites student 

teams from all disciplines to research, design 

and present ideas for proposed business concepts. 

The LWC nursing program signed partnership 

agreements with area hospitals during the 

spring semester to expand learning opportunities 

to current hospital nurses. The agreement 

allows nurses working full-time to earn a 

Bachelor of Science (BSN) degree at a reduced 

tuition rate. The nurses must be employed 

by Taylor Regional Hospital, TJ 

Samson Community Hospital, Lake Cumberland 

Regional Hospital or Med Center Health. 

The Blue Raider Softball field received a new 

name and a plaque at The Marilyn D. Sparks 

Park Dedication Service in April. The dedication 

service honored the memory of Marilyn D. 

Sparks who served as a college administrator 

from 1984 to 1987. Sparks was a faithful supporter 

of the Blue Raider Softball Program and 

also helped to champion the phrase "active 

caring and Christian concern" which is part of 

the Lindsey Wilson College mission statement. 

The Lindsey Wilson College Center for Excellence 

in Research hosted the third annual 

Mental Health Symposium in May. The keynote 

speaker, Kentucky Counseling Association 

President-elect Michelle Sircy, discussed the 

power counselors play in the fight against 

substance abuse and the critical role counselors 

have in supporting those affected by 

substance abuse. The symposium participants 

earn up to six hours of continuing education 

credit. 

The 2016-17 academic year saw LWC with 31 

NAIA scholar athletes and 187 Mid-South Conference 

all-academic honors. LWC had 16 

teams reach at least a 3.00 GPA this year. 

LWC raised $4,216,436 in total gift income 

compared to $2,933,597 in 2015-16. Additionally, 

LWC set an unrestricted giving record by 

securing $1,539,232. This is only the fifth time 

in the 114-year history the college surpassed 

$1,000,000 in unrestricted gifts.

120 points in the all-sports competition. 

A total of 11 LWC students were honored in April for their leadership skills and contributions to the LWC 

community at the ninth-annual L3 banquet. L3 – which stands for Live, Learn, Lead – is a program that

Admired Lindsey Wilson College 

trustee who served his community as a 

civic leader and employer, Robert Lewis 

Garrison, died Nov. 29. He was 80. 

Garrison served more than three decades as a trustee at Lindsey Wilson 

College where he was a key member of the buildings and grounds 

committee during the most expansive period of growth in the college’s 

history. Lewis and his wife, Gayle, have been generous supporters to 

Lindsey Wilson College and its students for more than 30 years. 

Garrison spent his early years on the family farm in Adair County 

(Ky.), where he established an unwavering work ethic and dedication to 

faith, family and education. After graduating from Adair County High 

School, Garrison worked as a truck driver until he was drafted by the 

U.S. Army in 1962. During this time, he met and married his wife of 55 

years, Gayle Corbin Garrison. Soon after his military service ended, the 

couple moved back to Adair County. 

In 1969, Garrison founded Garrison Construction Company. For more 

than 40 years, the successful construction business provided employment 

to many people in Columbia-Adair County. Eventually Garrison’s 

children, son, James and daughter, Amy Garrison Mitchum along with 

her husband, Mike Mitchum would join the company. Together, the family-run 

business would begin to diversify into more areas of construction 

including concrete work, bridge building, road building, utility work and 

coal mining reclamation in eastern and western Kentucky. 

A devoted and proud member of the Columbia-Adair County community, 

Garrison served on various city and county development boards including 

the airport board and the ambulance board. He was also a 

member of Columbia Lodge #96, Louisville Scottish Rite, Kosairs, National 

Utility Contractors Association, American Road and Transportation 

Builders, the Kentucky Association of Highway Contractors and a 

founding member of the Associate Builders and Contractors. In 2015, 

Garrison was honored as board member of the month by the Columbia- 

Adair County Chamber of Commerce for his years of devoted service. 

An antique tractor and vehicle enthusiast, Garrison restored more than 

100 antique tractors. He belonged to several antique tractor clubs and received 

numerous awards for his restoration work. 

Garrison was a member of Bethlehem Baptist Church in Green 

County where he was a trustee and served on the building committee. 

Garrison is survived by his wife Gayle, two children, four grandchildren

In Memoriam: Douglas D. Moseley 

Former Professor, Administrator and 

Longtime Supporter Helped Shape LWC 

Former 

Lindsey 

Wilson College 

professor 

and 

administrator, Douglas D. Moseley, 

died on Nov. 8. He was 86. 

Few people have been more important 

to LWC than Doug Moseley. 

Moseley came to LWC in 1960 

as a religion professor. He later 

served as chair of the religion department, 

then was assistant to the 

president for development for more 

than a decade. 

Moseley’s ministry included 

serving as pastor of: Park City 

Methodist Church, Russell Springs 

United Methodist Church, Trinity 

United Methodist Church in Columbia, 

Albany United Methodist 

Church and St. Andrew United 

Methodist Church in Campbellsville. 

From 1974-1986, Moseley 

served as a Republican member of 

the Kentucky State Senate. His 

Senate district included Adair, Clinton, 

Cumberland, Green, Metcalfe, 

Russell, Taylor and Wayne counties 

and at times Casey County and a 

part of McCreary County. 

Moseley also served on the Kentucky 

Legislative Ethics Commission, 

the State Personnel Board, the 

Kentucky Parole and Probation 

Board, and has been a district superintendent 

of the Kentucky Parks 

Department. 

Moseley and his wife, Betty Jean 

Wyant Moseley, remained loyal 

supporters of LWC for more than 

four decades. 

“Education’s important, but education 

without faith and without the 

willingness to work hard is just 

wasted,” said Moseley in 2006. 

In 2013, the Moseleys gave their 

collection of more than 480 books 

about U.S. presidents to the Katie 

Murrell Library. The Moseleys also 

established the Doug and Betty 

Jean Moseley Endowed Scholarship 

in 2002, which has helped numerous 

students realize the dream of 

earning a college education. 

In 2010, Moseley was awarded 

an honorary doctorate of humane 

letters from LWC. 

A native of Bowling Green, Ky., 

Moseley is survived by his wife of 

63 years, Betty Jean, three children, 

three grandchildren and seven 

great-grandchildren.
