A Word About SNOW…

With winter upon us, Dr.
Brad Jackson, superintendent
of schools, offered a look at the
process he uses to make the call
on whether or not to close for a
“Snow Day.”
It goes without saying that
the safety of our students and
staff is my primary concern
when making “the call.” However,
snow is an inevitable part
of a typical New England winter,
and we don’t want to be
in school in July. Making the
“right” call requires lots of information
and, admittedly, a
little bit of luck.
Whenever snow is forecast,
area superintendents begin to
gather and share information,
usually through group text messages
or emails, at least 24 hours

prior to the time when the
snowfall is predicted to begin.
We discuss the particulars of
the forecast including timing,
intensity, predicted snow depths
and the level of certainty that
weather forecasters are including
in their reports. We also
discuss when it makes sense to
make our final decision -- can
we accurately make the right
decision the night before or is
it more prudent to wait and decide
in the morning?
As the time to make the decision
approaches, I consult with
the director of the Holliston
Highway Department who provides
me with his assessment of
current road conditions, forecasted
road conditions, and the
conditions of our school parking
lots and driveways. I also consult
with the Holliston Police Department
and sometimes speak to

the shift commander who is out
on patrol to get his or her assessment
of road conditions. Local
superintendents share our local
conditions with one another,
through email or group texts, as
staff and school choice students
drive to school from outside of
Holliston. As this is happening,
I am channel-surfing on my TV
comparing weather forecasts.
When I have as much information
as I feel I am going to get,
I make the call and, if the decision
is to cancel or delay the
opening of school, I begin the
process of notifying the community.
When this decision is being
made in the morning, my goal
is to finalize my “call” no later
than 5:15 a.m.
Unfortunately, the changeable
New England weather can
turn what looked like a good decision
at 5 a.m. to a bad decision

with my decision to hold classes.
Road conditions that allow
for safe bus and car transportation
are essential to open
school. Parents with students
who live close to school are encouraged
to make alternative
arrangements (such as group
carpools) on days when the
Highway Department has not
yet been able to clear the sidewalks.

part of the day for many students
