Lashuay named Comet of Month
Brown honored for integrity; Dazey is top athlete
The OHS Student Recognition
Committee has
chosen Garrett Lashuay to
be the February Student
of the Month.
Lashuay, a senior, is
active in FCA, National
Honor Sociey, wrestling,
and soccer. He is also
the SAR for the Class of
2018.
Junior Dawn Brown is
the winner of the Character
Trait Award. This
month’s award was for
Integrity.
Brown is a member of
student council and the
pep band.

Month for his contributions
to the wrestling and
soccer teams.

Lee named February staff member of month
Dazey already holds
the record for most individual
wrestling wins in a
career at OHS and is hoping
to become the Comets
first four-time State qualifier.
Last year he finished
6th at State.
Surprise, Mr. Tim Lee is the
February Staff Member of the
Month!
Amy Esteves, school social
worker, said “In Mr. Lee’s first
year as principal he coined the
phrase ‘Its Great to be Young and
a Comet.’ He has set out to create
a positive and welcoming environment
for students, parents
and staff!”
“Mr. Lee is always available
to any staff member (or student)
even when his day has been
crazy in the office,” said secretary
Shannan Ford. “I can't think
of anyone in this building more
deserving to get this award than
him. He eats, breathes and sleeps
Oakwood Comets.”
Mr. Lee has a good rapport
with his students, always asking
them about their interests or joking
around with them in the hallway.
He attends their games, and
encourages them to succeed academically
as well.

Seniors meet on SAT!
Juniors across the state were required
to take the SAT, measuring
their achievements in reading, math,
and writing. This data is used to determine
how Oakwood students’
achievements compare to the rest of
the state.
In order to recognize their accomplishments
and efforts on the
SAT, Oakwood High School has an
incentive program. Those students
who meet and exceeded the expectations
of the SAT were awarded
shirts with their last name and an
“I’m a Comet” logo on the back
emphasizing the “I Met” to signify
their work.
Students who received these
shirts, now seniors, will be treated to
Comet Courier 02-02-18
extra rewards and trips each month
for the remainder of the school year,
but they must wear the shirts on
those reward days.
Eleven seniors qualified this year.

WYSE reaches
another
Sectional
The OHS WYSE team took second
place in Division 700 of the
DACC Regional on Jan. 30 and will
advance to the EIU Sectional.
The Comets finished behind
BHRA, who have advanced to the
Sectional for (at least) 11 straight
years.
Numerous individuals won
awards at the competiton:

1,000-point scorers!
Two Comets recorded their 1,000th point as varsity
basketball players this year. Senior Chase Vinson became
the 12th boy to record 1,000 on January 30 against
Hoopeston Area.
Two weeks earlier on January 8, also against
Hoopeston Area, sophomore Katelyn Young scored her
1,000th point.

Prom set for May 12,
attendees hear rules
To parents of potential Prom attendees,
A meeting for junior and seniors was held in the gym
on Thur., Jan.18, to go over some pertinent Prom rules.
1. To attend Prom, a student must meet IHSA scholastic
standing requirements - passing four classes.
(Third and fourth quarter average)
2. Students will not be allowed to leave Prom until
11 p.m. No exceptions!
3. Any student who owes any money to any club or
sport will not be allowed to purchase a ticket until they
are paid up. This includes turning in sport uniforms.
We will send home a form in May, but the grades are
the important thing for now.

Scholastic Bowl starts year
with new coaching staff
The OHS Scholastic Bowl season
has started and an excited group
of students are ready to compete
against other schools.
The Scholastic Bowl team is
coached by Ms. Head and Mr. Hayworth
and they have a VVC match
on most Thursdays at 5:30 p.m.,
with the season culminating with
the VVC tournament, the Vermilion
County tournament, and then the
IHSA Regional.

Student Council
hosts blood drive
OHS’ Student Council and the Community Blood
Services of Illinois will host a blood drive in the high
school library on Wed., Feb. 28 from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
Our goal for the drive is to collect 25 pints of blood.
This could potentially save the lives of 75 people.
Additionally, CBSI will donate $250 to a scholarship
fund that will be awarded to an OHS graduating senior
at the end of the year if we collect a minimum of 20
donations. Every donation beyond that will contribute
another $1 to the fund.

on Sunday!
The Class of 2019 will
be bagging groceries at Tilton
County Market on Super
Bowl Sunday from 9:30 a.m.
to 3:30 p.m. at least.
It is a fundraiser for Prom.
The Super Bowl is February
4. If you need groceries
for your parties please
come and shop to support
the class between those
times!!!
