The head coach sets the tone for the 

new season ahead... 

Welcome back to 

Peffermill for the 

2018 SWPL season. 

After a small break 

and a variety of games 

in pre-season we are 

looking forward to 

starting the season 

as we welcome our 

Edinburgh neighbours 

Heart of Midlothian. 

This year I expect 

to see the most 

competitive SWPL 

2 yet, and we are 

looking forward to the 

challenge. 

The set up between 

the University of 

Edinburgh and 

Hutchison Vale 

continues to grow from 

strength to strength 

and as a result we have 

maintained all players 

who finished the season 

last year. 

We also continue 

to work behind the 

scenes to improve the 

environment and we 

are excited to see the 

new 3G being built as 

this will help us strive 

towards having the 

best training facilities in 

Edinburgh for players to 

develop. 

I would like to say 

thanks to Tom Connor 

for his work with 

EUWAFC and HV the 

last 2 years - he put in 

many hours work to 

help move this project 

forward. 

I would also like 

to say thanks to the 

supporters for their 

continued backing 

last season and for 

the season ahead. We 

continue to look for 

sponsors and volunteer 

support so please get in 

touch if you can help or 

know anyone who can

THE CAPTAIN 

The captain feels prepared for an 

exciting and successful season... 

We are all really 

looking forward 

to the upcoming 

season, we have really 

come together as a 

squad over the last 6 

months and look to 

keep building on that. 

Our preparations in 

preseason have gone 

well, with new signings 

and returning familiar 

faces settling in well. 

There is a healthy 

competition amongst 

the squad for positions 

which has increased the 

intensity and focus at 

training. 

We are hoping after 

finishing the season so 

strongly that we can get 

off to a positive start. It 

will be a challenging 

season, as everyone 

is improving and 

strengthening year on 

year. It has always been 

a highly competitive 

but we will take each 

game as it comes and 

build week on week. 

It’s great that the 

first game is at home 

against Hearts, 

hopefully we get a good 

crowd and can give 

them an entertaining 

game. Our previous 

games against Hearts 

have always been close 

encounters, where we 

have come out on top. 

It will be a difficult 

game but I think we are 

more than capable of 

getting the 3 points. It’s 

a long season but we 

have great depth in the 

squad with a number of 

players able to play in a 

variety of positions. 

I’d like to thank the 

coaching staff and all 

the background staff 

who have worked 

hard in getting the 

partnership between 

Edinburgh University 

and Hutchison Vale 

working smoothly so 

that the players are just 

able to concentrate 

on playing football. 

I’m looking forward to 

getting started, and 

having a successful 

season with the club.

A professional 

performance from 

EUHV sees the team 

win three games from 

three this season 

against Hearts, a fitting 

result to end the 2017 

season. 

It was a positive start 

for EUHV at Kings Park 

as both Beth Macleod 

and Leanne Forker had 

half chances within 

the first 5 minutes. 

Both teams struggled 

to maintain a lot of 

possession as the pace 

of the game remained 

high but it was EUHV 

with most of the 

chances in the first half. 

It wasn’t until the 37th 

minute that the visitors 

broke the deadlock 

with a ferocious strike 

by Macleod (sponsored 

by Forkers Fitness). 

A strong challege 

in the middle of the 

park released the ball 

to Nichola Sturrock 

who slipped a pass 

to Margaux Durand- 

Watson who went on to 

feed Beth Macleod. 1-0 

to EUHV! 

After a nervous few 

minutes just before 

the whistle but EUHV 

defense stayed strong 

to head into the break 

with the lead. 

It was straight into the 

action second half for 

subsitute goal keeper

Parker-Smith who 

made a fantasic diving 

save to deny a powerful 

half volley inside the 

box. The game then 

opened up as both 

teams looked to find 

the back of the net. 

EUHV then doubled 

their lead on the 75th 

minute and it was 

Nichola Sturrock again 

who was instrumental 

in creating the goal. Her 

through ball was met 

calmy by Anna Hume to 

slot past the oncoming 

Hearts goalkeeper, 2-0. 

Unfortunately the 

lead was diminished to 

only one goal within 5 

minutes of Anna Hume 

scoring. After calls for 

offside and an initial 

save from Parker-Smith 

Hearts managed to find 

the back of the net on 

the 80th minute. Hearts 

continued to press 

and were awarded a 

penalty only 3 minutes 

later following a late 

challenge by Beth 

Sutherland 

in the 

penalty area. 

The Hearts 

Captain 

Paterson stepped 

up to take it but was 

denied the equaliser by 

EUHV HAVE BEATEN HEARTS IN ALL 

THREE MEETINGS THIS SEASON.

stroke of the final 

whistle but could only 

shoot wide.

University Programme News 

In the midst of winter, 

EUWAFC are battling 

with the bad weather 

and waterlogged 

pitches to get in game 

time. Despite training 

cancellations and 

matches postponed, on 

Saturday 3rd February 

EUWAFC celebrated its 

25th year Anniversary 

by inviting all current 

and alumni players and 

staff along to a fun filled 

day of a 5-aside football 

tournament followed 

by a ‘Look back at 25 

years of EUWAFC’. This 

was one of the biggest 

alumni events EUWAFC 

has hosted and the 

rain didn’t stop a day of 

celebrations. 

Back in January our 

2nd team produced 

a solid performance 

against a very strong 

University of Leeds 

1st team. This BUCS 

trophy result ended 

in a 4-0 win for Leeds, 

with centre-back Olivia 

Fraser being awarded 

Player of the Match for 

her strong defensive 

performance. In other 

news, in a late Friday 

evening kick off our 

1st team played Saint 

Andrews 3rd team 

in their draw of the 

Scottish Student Sport 

cup where the result 

was 7-0 to Edinburgh. 

Special mention to 

Margaux Durand- 

Watson for getting the 

first hatrick of 2018! 

This week saw our 3rd 

teams first friendly 

match on 2018 against 

Edinburgh Napier. In a 

close contest the final 

score was 2-1 with a 

magnificent goal from a 

free kick by Katie Taylor 

and new addition to the 

3’s squad: Lily Worden. 

EUWAFC are in 

anticipation of the up 

and coming fixtures 

next week where our 

2s and 3s both travel 

to Saint Andrews for 

league fixtures and our 

1st team travel up to 

Aberdeen for the BUCS 

trophy. Next weekend 

is an exciting time for 

our futsal teams as they 

both travel away for 

trophy fixtures. Our 2s 

travel to Liverpool and 

the 1s to Loughborough. 

Hopefully both teams 

can bring back the win!

THE BIG INTERVIEW 

You are an American, 

only here in Edinburgh 

for one semester. 

What attracted you to 

Edinburgh as a place 

to study? 

I was really impressed 

by the amount of 

international students 

that go to Edinburgh 

University. As a history 

student, I was very 

drawn to study in a 

place both rich in 

history and diverse in 

culture. I hoped to, 

and have already, met 

students from all over 

the world. I love that! 

From Massachusetts 

correct? How does 

Edinburgh compare to 

back home? 

I am! Edinburgh is 

much larger than 

my hometown,

Stockbridge, which has 

only 2,000 residents. 

But still, Edinburgh life 

hasn’t overwhelmed me 

at all, and I always find 

pockets of this city that 

have a small-town vibe. 

Most of all, I love being 

able to hike, especially 

Arthur’s Seat, because 

at home I hike all of the 

time. Also, everyone 

here is a bit friendlier! 

Staying with back 

home, it’s clear you 

played football, or 

soccer as it is known in 

North America, before 

coming here. Can you 

fill us in on your career 

prior to joining up with 

EUHV? 

Yeah! So I’ve played 

soccer since I was 7 

years old. I played 

on both local teams, 

including my high 

school team, and a club 

team called Soccer 

Domain Academy. 

I took a break from

school and soccer for 

about 3 years after high 

school. I began to play 

co-ed friendly matches 

for fun, and just totally 

fell in love with the 

sport again. I decided 

to go back to university 

to get a degree in 

history, and play soccer 

competitively again. 

I now have one more

season left with Smith 

College. 

How has your 

experience been of 

joining up with the 

Edinburgh University 

BUCS and EUHV setup? 

I’ve had such a great 

time so far. The 

coaching staff, and 

the team has been 

incredibly welcoming. 

I love the integration of 

the BUCS and EUHV, 

as it gives university 

players the opportunity 

to play at an impressive 

and high level of soccer. 

Everyone gets along so 

well, and it feels like a 

big family! 

You are a midfielder 

right? How would you 

describe yourself as a 

player? 

I am! I suppose I would 

describe myself as 

a playmaker. I enjoy 

finding the small 

pockets, receiving and 

playing out of them. I 

try to keep a 360 view of 

the field in order to help 

develop attacks. I also 

try to play with 100% 

intensity the entire time 

I’m on the field, and 

never back down from 

anything. 

What has been your 

most memorable 

moment of your career 

thus far? 

Making it to the 

Western Massachusetts 

finals in high school. 

We lost, but it was the 

first time our team had 

gotten there in over a 

decade. Besides, I’ve 

never felt so much love 

and passion on a team 

before, and I’ll never 

forget those girls! 

Any footballing role 

models either from the 

professional world or 

that you have worked 

with? 

Yes definitely. My 

high school coach 

Sean Flynn, who saw 

potential in me and 

helped me channel 

my high intensity and 

passion for the sport 

to into positive energy. 

Secondly, my former 

club trainer, Rich 

Powell, who I recently 

reconnected with. He’s 

done so much to help 

me improve my game, 

and I love working with 

him. 

Everyone supports a 

team or at least has 

a soft spot for one. 

What’s your team, 

football or otherwise? 

Ah yes, I have to say, my 

number one team is the 

Patriots, the American 

football team! 

What are your aims for 

the short time that you 

are going to be with us 

here in Edinburgh? 

From a soccer 

standpoint, improve my 



game just by practicing, 

but also by playing 

alongside this talented 

squad. I also hope to 

make good friends and 

lasting connections, so 

that if I decide to come 

back, I can pick up right 

where I left off! 

Speaking of the future. 

Where would you like 

to find yourself in five 

years time? 

Ah, either studying 

to get my PhD in US 

History, or working for a 

nonprofit company that 

focuses on empowering 

and providing 

assistance for women, 

and/or marginalized 

communities. And 

maybe playing for 

EUHV!!! 

So you expect to still 

be involved with 

football in some 

capacity in the future? 

Absolutely, I suspect I’ll 

be playing soccer until I 

can’t run anymore. 

You mentioned a 

passion for American 

football. Do you follow 

or play any other 

sports? 

I play basketball and 

golf as well, but I stick 

mainly to soccer. And 

no, I really just support 

the Patriots now! 

Any hobbies or 

interests away 

“I LOVE BEING ABLE TO HIKE, 

ESPECIALLY ARTHUR’S SEAT, BECAUSE 

AT HOME I HIKE ALL OF THE TIME.”

time when not in 

the lecture theaters

Yeah! I love seeing live 

music. I hope to get 

to a concert while I’m 

over here. But at home, 

I’ve been to over 100 

concerts. I also love 

to travel. I went to 

Germany, Switzerland, 

France, the Netherlands 

and Iceland over the 

summer. 

In terms of music what 

and who do you enjoy 

listening to and going 

to see? 

I’m a huge Phish fan, 

and have seen them 

loads of times. I’ve been 

to some classics, Paul 

McCartney and Earth 

Wind and Fire being 

just a couple of them. 

But I’d say my favorite 

concert was Jack White, 

from the White Stripes, 

in New York City. 

And travel? You listed 

a few destinations 

you recently visited. 

Any stand out as 

favourites? 

Yes! I loved the 

countryside of western 

Germany, and hiking in 

the Swiss Alps in a town 

called Grindelwald. 

Tell us something 

about yourself that we 

don’t know? 

I trained under a James 

Beard nominated chef 

for over a year, having 

originally planned to 

become a chef myself 

one day. Now, I just 

love to experiment and 

cook food for all of my 

friends. 

Who is the most 

famous person you 

have ever met? 

Well, I high-fived Walter 

McCarty, number 00 on 

the Boston Celtics from 

1997-2005. 

Best players that you 

have ever played with 

and against? 

My friends over at 

the Fieldhouse in 

Canaan, NY are the 

best. However at EUHV 

the Yasemin & Anna 

Hume duo up top is 

unstoppable. Nichola 

Sturrock’s foot skills 

are unbelievable and 

our line of defense 

is strong, disciplined 

and incredibly skillful. 

Sophie Boeckh is a 

fantastic finisher as well.
