OFFICERS of the
Nigerian Customs
Service, in pursuit of
smugglers, Tuesday night,
reportedly killed a 25-yearold
man identified as Amiru
Abdulaziz of Daddara
village in Jibia Local
Government Area of
Katsina State.
It was gathered that the
deceased was hit by a stray
bullet while he was coming
out of his father, Amiru
Alhaji Abdullahi’s shop
along the Jibia Road.
A source said Abdulaziz
was rushed to Katsina
General Hospital, where
he was confirmed dead
and had been buried
according to Islamic rites.
When contacted, the
Customs Command
spokesperson, Theophilus
Duniya, said there was no
comprehensive report on
the incident, but promised
to get back to Vanguard
with details. He had not
done so at press time.
However, Katsina State
Police Public Relations
Officer, DSP Gambo Isah,
who confirmed the incident,
said the officers were of the
Federal Operation Unit.
The deceased is survived
by a wife and two children.
Guard nabbed
over killing in
Enugu cashew
plantation
ENUGU State Police
Command, yesterday,
said it has arrested a
security man in connection
with the alleged murder of
a senior secondary school
student.
The deceased,
Ugochukwu Oduburu, 17,
a student of Government
Technical College, Akama,
Ezeagu Local Government
Area, was allegedly
murdered in a cashew
plantation on February 17.
The Command’s
spokesman, SP Ebere
Amaraizu, said the boy was
shot dead when he went to
pick cashew nuts.
According to Amaraizu,
“it was gathered that the
deceased, who is a parttime
cashew nuts picker in
Akama community, had
gone to pick cashew nuts
on that fateful day when
suddenly he was shot and
killed by the suspect.
“It was further gathered
that the suspect allegedly
used a single-barrelled
locally-made gun to shoot
the deceased.”

13-yr-old marriage crashes over
allegations of adultery, assault
A47-year-old businessman,
Rufus Otegbola, yesterday,
told an Igando Customary
Court in Lagos, that his wife,
Funmilayo, is a serial divorcee.
Rufus, who urged the court
to dissolve his 13-year-old
marriage to Funmilayo over
allegation of adultery, told the
court that he was the
respondent’s fifth husband.
His words: “My wife is
adulterous and a serial
divorcee. She has married and
divorced four husbands before
I married her.
“Funmilayo is diabolical and
fetish, she always comes home
with charms and my fear is that
she may kill me one day if I do
not end the marriage.”
Rufus said his wife packed out
of their matrimonial home
without his consent.
According to him, “my
parents-in-law and my wife’s
siblings came to my house to
pack my wife’s property
without my permission.”
He urged the court to end the
marriage as he was no longer
in love with her.
Wife’s response
In her response, Funmilayo,
42, a businesswoman, said her
husband was an unrepentant
polygamist.
She said: “My husband
deceived me. He did not tell
me that he had three wives
before marrying me. He
impregnated me and hurried
me into his house without
legalising it.
“I discovered that he already
had three wives living with him
and there was nothing I could
do since I was pregnant; I had
to stay.”
Funmilayo said Rufus turned
her into a punching bag.
According to her, “my
husband beats me all time.
Even when I was pregnant, he

beat me so much I fell into
labour immediately.
“As a result of the frequent
beating, on May 9, 2016, I
packed my belongings from his
house and moved to my
parents’ house.”
Funmilayo further described

job, I was the one feeding him,
his wives and their children. I

LAGOS—THE Police in
Lagos have arrested a 73-
year-old man, who allegedly
stabbed his nephew to death
over a land dispute in Ikorodu
area of Lagos State.
However, the suspect,
Emmanuel Gbolahan, an exmilitary
man, stated during
interrogation that he never
meant to kill his 50-year- old
nephew, Adeniyi Oyebanjo,
that he only wanted to
demonstrate his skills as an exserviceman.
Vanguard gathered that there
had been a lingering quarrel
between the suspect and one
of his brothers, Oyebanjo, over
ownership of a portion of land
at Lowa area of Ikorodu.
But the situation took a
violent dimension last Friday,
after the deceased reportedly
challenged the suspect over
the same issue, an action that
was described as an affront by
the septuagenarian.
A relative, who spoke on the
condition of anonymity, told
of our children and my
stepchildren.”
The mother of four, however,
consented to the dissolution
of the marriage, saying “I am
also fed up with the union.”
In his judgment, the
President of the court, Mr.
Akin Akinniyi, noted that the
estranged couple was tired of
the marriage as all efforts to
reconcile them had failed.
