PAUL OAKENFOLD’S - GENERATIONS TOP 10 IBIZA PLAYLIST ELECTRA - JIBARO CINDY LAUPER - WHAT’S GOING ON WOODEN TOPS - ARE YOU READY NOW THRASHING DOVES - JESUS ON THE PAYROLL ART OF NOISE - MOMENTS IN LOVE WILLIAM PITT - CITY LIGHTS PRINCE - SIGN OF THE TIMES IT’S IMMATERIAL - DRIVING AWAY FROM HOME MANDY SMITH - I JUST CAN’T WAIT MORY KANTE - YEKE YEKE a full English around the pool when he’s staying at Pikes and as I’m a fully qualified chef, I’ll cook us a full English. I’ll get up there and cook it if we’re both there at the same time – I know all the little tricks to add flavour. If you’re frying an egg, it’s the oil you cook the egg in. That’s the secret. Unfortunately I’m only playing four times at Pikes because I live in America – if I was doing the season it would really pick momentum up. Those four Wednesdays are going to come and go really quickly so I really want to enjoy it as much as possible. I am genuinely excited by doing this residency – I’ve been reaching out to friends since the beginning of the year and they’re all going to come by and play. I’m doing a compilation of 30 years of electronic music, which will show people not the obvious tracks, but some of the tracks of the genre, many of which have soundtracked my time in Ibiza. We’re going to do a big opening party, give some music away and it’ll be a lot of fun. Because I’m usually used to playing massive shows it’s going to feel amazing to go back and play a small room for 200 people, and to be playing three-hour sets is really going to be fun, I can’t wait. Every time I’ve mentioned it to a DJ colleague they’ve said they’re going to come and play for an hour… which is something I’m going to have to keep an eye on or I’m going to end up not getting on the decks! I want to keep these nights as special moments for everyone who goes. We’re open 11pm - 6am, so we’re going to have a lot of fun with it. Bear in mind that it’s a celebration of 30 years so I want to have different DJs playing different things, passing by, jumping on, doing back2back – it’s about sharing and that’s the real message that I want to get across. Whoever’s around, even if they’re brand new and only just started then they’re welcome. We’re very current in electronic music and it’s all about moving forward. My label is 26 years old; we’re the longest lasting electronic label out there. We’ve sold over 10m records, so I’m definitely about embracing now and the future, I don’t want it to just be about telling a story from back in the day. We’ll have a celebration of a lot of different music and whoever’s around and wants to jump on, even if they’re singers or MCs; it’s about a collective of electronic people coming together, sharing and having a great time. The opening night will be me, Nicky Holloway and Alfredo. Even though it’s my residency I was thinking that on the opening night I really want to pay respect and homage to the island and especially someone like Alfredo. So instead of Alfredo warming up for me, I’ve been thinking of doing something a bit different. We all know the story that when Nicky Holloway and I came out here in ’87 and we heard Alfredo play and that changed everything. So why don’t we pay respect on the opening night and let Alfredo play the main set? So Nicky warms up, then I go on and then we let Alfredo play that classic set that changed me and Nicky’s life, that changed all our lives, and share that with everyone. It’s just a one off moment where you can go way back and hear these records that some people may never have heard before. That would just be an amazing moment for all of us, just to relive it for one night. I’m in a position as the resident to do that. It’s not all about me, it’s about us. The whole concept about the residency is about sharing and bringing these great people together. I like the idea of hanging out with everyone at Pikes again. I know that once the Wednesday nights I’m doing are announced and the news spreads around, people will be wanting to come along. And that’s the whole idea – come and hang out if you’re in Ibiza, bring up your music and share. It’s a celebration and that’s how I want to promote it, let’s have a great time, let’s have people booking tables, having dinner and rolling into the night. Let’s really enjoy it and bring back some of those special moments from back in the day. Look at all these 30 years events that are going on in the UK, we’re going to reach out to them all and have them coming out – it’s going to turn into some crazy parties! We’re going to be putting on what will become legendary parties for four weeks this summer at Pikes. Remember it’s not really open to the public… This hotel is a special place to a lot of people. I’ve had some great times and really do have some special memories from this place. I’ve already mentioned the famous (and illegal) Perfecto party that went on ‘til midday and was planned at Pikes, and, looking back, both my residencies, Cream and Pacha, both came out of me sitting at Pikes as well. I’ve bought a lot of people there from around the world and I’ve always recommended it as a hotel to stay. I think there’s always a special moment when you walk up those little stairs onto the veranda and you first see the swimming pool. That’s the way I always go in. I always take people in that way for the first time, with the bar to the left and rooms to the right - that’s the Pikes moment, where you’re like “I’m home!” It feels like home in some respects - I’ve been going there 35 years. Paul Oakenfold’s Generations will be 2nd / 9th / 16th and 23rd August. 27
