fastball broke his left wrist. Wait a minute, you said your name was
Wilson Wilde? Hey, I remember you. You wrote that column, Behind
the Scoreboard, didn't you? I loved reading your baseball stories. You
have a clever way with words.”
“Yep, that's me, Florence and you just said the magic words to a
writer. Clever writer is my favorite phrase, so thanks. You've made my
day.”
“ Do you have the time now?”
“What's that? Time for what?”
“For your novel. I'd bet all the cash in my purse that you have a novel
or two you have been working on for years, haven't you?”
“Do you also read palms, Florence? Damn, you're good. I do have the
time and I have finished three novels and a bunch of short stories. I blog
about baseball. I think I 'm too old to convince an agent or publisher that
my books have merit but I like creating stories. I may write a short story
about this incredible cab ride with the refined, classy Florence. I have
your address. I'll send you a copy.”
“More music, maestro, please.”
“You got it, birthday, girl. Here's another UK gal.” A woman singing a
Sinatra cover of Learning the Blues came on. Florence almost purred
with pleasure from the sounds.
“Well, here's our exit coming up. I hope you have a wonderful trip,
Florence.”
