Walking in Nordfjord 

Nordfjord offers a wide range of walks – either up to high 

summits that will take your breath away, along the exotic 

coast or on historic roads. Together, these varied trails 

represent the very best walks in the Nordfjord area. Mt. Skåla 

– the highest mountain with its foot in the fjord. Skåla towers 

1,848 metres above the fjord, Via Ferrata Loen, Hornindalsrokken, 

Eggenipa, Trollenyken, Hornelen, Skongenes Lighthouse, Selja 

Monastery and Ytre Fure are some of the highlights.

Maps and marked walking trails 

More and more walking trails in Nordfjord are marked 

according to national standards (level of difficulty: green, 

blue, red and black). Tre networks of trails are also marked: 

Harpefossen (Eid), Turløyper Stryn and by Loen Skylift. In 

addition to maps covering the whole country, good walking 

maps are available for the Stryn, Eid and og Gloppen areas. 

The maps have marked trails and text describing each walk. 

The walks vary in length and degree of difficulty. The maps can 

be purchased at the tourist information offices in Nordfjord. 

You can also buy maps and guidebooks at book shops in the 

area. 

Mountain farm visits 

The summer pasture farms in Nordfjord are both attractive 

destinations and unique cultural heritage sites. Running 

summer pasture farms is a long-standing tradition in Norway. 

The farmers started using summer pastures because of a lack 

of grazing around their farms. Few of the summer pasture 

farms are still in use, but Gjengedalsstølen in Hyen and 

Sagesetra in Eid are still active in summer. You will find 

summer pasture farms in all the valleys in Nordfjord. You can 

drive all the way (usually on a toll road) to some of them, 

others you have to walk to. Take your lunch break in a rural 

idyll, in a cultural landscape rich in tradition and history, and 

dream of a time of dairy maids, hard toil but also fiddle 

players, dancing and fun.

Glacier walks 

Experience the blue ice up close on a guided 

glacier walk. A magical adventure you simply 

have to try. The glaciers consist of ice that is in 

constant movement. Show respect for the 

forces of nature! If you know too little about

the ice.

Norway is the one 

with the greatest 

view. 

Loen Skylift cable car takes you from Loen to 

the top of Hoven in 5 minutes. You won’t find a 

quicker and simpler way of climbing from 0 to 

1,011 metres or a more spectacular view. From 

Hoven, you can see far and wide across 

mountains, fjords and glaciers. Loen Skylift is 

one of the many attractions in Nordfjord.

Outdoor adventures 

in Nordfjord, you will 

find your own natural 

playground 

If you have planned a week’s holiday, you will change it to 

two when you see the range of activities you can choose 

from. Imagine gliding across a quiet, clear lake in a kayak, 

throwing your fishing line into the sea, cycling between fjords, 

mountains and glaciers, or maybe getting your adrenaline 

pumping with some rafting, a via ferrata, off-road biking or a 

helicopter ride. All this and more is available in Nordfjord.

Surfing 

At Stad, you will find perfect surfing conditions, with big 

waves and white sandy beaches, and with steep 

mountainsides creating a perfect backdrop. Maybe the word 

surfing sets you thinking about palm trees and tropical 

temperatures in southern climes. Surfing in the beautiful 

coastal landscape at Stad is at least as exotic. These fantastic 

beaches have long been hidden surfing gems, but more and 

more people have now discovered the joy of surfing out here 

at the ocean’s edge. The kilometre-long sandy beach at 

Hoddevik is one of Norway’s best and most beautiful surfing 

spots. Thirty kilometres away is Ervikstranda beach, where 

there are almost always waves. Be aware of undercurrents and 

the remains of shipwrecks in Ervik.

Cycling 

In Nordfjord, you can cycle on old carriage roads 

with hardly any traffic, on roads that wind their way 

up valleys, or alongside the ocean under the red 

evening sun. The roads through this contrasting 

landscape are suitable for families, but we also 

have suggestions for those who like more challenging 

terrain, either on trails in the mountain or forest 

roads up to summer pasture farms.

Flofjellet, from Hellesylt to Stryn 

From Hellesylt, you cycle towards Vollset, where 

you take the road over Flofjellet mountain, and 

down to the charming, fruit-growing village of Flo. 

You then cycle along Oppstrynsvatnet lake and 

continue on the RV 15 road towards Stryn. The 

cycling is relatively easy. There are some uphill 

sections from Hellesylt to Vollset, but the cycling 

track is good. Flofjellet mountain offers wonderful 

scenery, with roaring waterfalls and peaceful lakes. 

You will also pass several idyllic summer pasture 

farms. The trip takes four to six hours and is about 

40 km long. The highest point is 550 m. Want to

Harpefossen, Eid 

Harpefossen is also a good starting point for cycling 

trips on a varied network of roads and paths. A 

great 8-km circular route that passes four summer 

pasture farms. You can also cycle the old Postal 

Road in idyllic surroundings from Harpefossen to 

Bjørkedalen and back, a total distance of 20 km.

Gloppen 

Popular area for mountain bikers. Haugsvarden, 

Leirstøylen and Vereideskogen. In Gloppen, you 

can also cycle to many of the valleys and lovely 

mountain pasture enclosures on good forest roads.

Riding fjord horses 

Nordfjord is the realm of the fjord horse. It has 

been used for farm work for generations and has 

become a symbol of the villages of Nordfjord. 

Nowadays, it is used for riding, drawing carts and 

buggies and other leisure activities. The fjord horse 

is like the people of Nordfjord: hard-working, 

good-natured and reliable. Seeing the landscape 

on horseback is a fantastic experience that you 

simply have to try!

Bathing on white sandy beaches 

Along the coast of Nordfjord, you can wander 

barefoot on white, soft sandy beaches. You find 

them in sheltered bays where the waves come 

rolling in from the mighty ocean. Some of the 

beaches have also become popular with surfers 

from Norway and abroad. The biggest, most 

beautiful sandy beaches are: 

Refviksanden, approx. 10 km from Måløy. One of 

Norway’s best sandy beaches. Public campsite with

Fishing in the sea is free for everyone. The best sea 

angling is at the coast, and you can make good 

catches both from land and from a boat. You need 

a fishing permit to fish in freshwater. You can buy 

fishing permits at sports shops, many campsites 

and some hotels. In some places, there are 

self-service machines beside rivers and lakes.

Via Ferrata Loen, a climbing route from Loen to the 

summit of Mount Hoven (1,010 m). 

Beachen in Stryn, 7 km from the centre of Stryn, 

5 km from Loen. More than 30 routes. One of the

Scuba diving 

The Nordfjord coast is a paradise for diving 

enthusiasts. Countless boats have gone to a watery 

grave in the treacherous waters at Stad, but few 

have been discovered or explored by divers. Maybe 

you will be lucky and find a new wreck? There is 

rich vegetation with kelp forests, caves and 

interesting rock formations. There are also lots of 

fish and shellfish in the area.

Should you be unlucky and visit on a day when the 

weather is bad, there is no reason to just sit 

around doing nothing. In Nordfjord, there are

Farm visit 

At Nave Hjortefarm (deer farm) in Bryggja, you can see red deer 

at close hand and help to feed them. The farm also has cashmere 

goats, llamas, a donkey and a dog. At Hakalle Farm in Vanylven, 

you can see alpaca, dogs, peacocks, goats, miniature horses, 

donkeys, cats and horses. 

Stryn Summer Ski Centre 

How about a skiing trip in the middle of summer? Stryn Summer 

ski centre is on Strynefjellet mountain, 45 km east of Stryn town 

centre. Open from May to June/July.

In Nordfjord you will find many offers that are suitable 

for families. Bring the kids and let them explore nature 

through exciting activities. Here is some examples for 

inspiration. 

Experience the glaciers – the Briksdalsbreen glacier is a 

popular destination, and there is a lovely walk up the 

three-kilometre-long gravel road to the glacier past 

exciting potholes and grazing animals. Maybe you 

would enjoy an exciting drive up in the small, open 

‘Troll’ cars? 

There are lovely walks for families up to the 

Bødalsbreen and Kjenndalsbreen glaciers in Lodalen 

– you can easily push a pram on the good path in 

Kjenndalen valley. 

Loen Skylift and Via Ferrata 

Take the new cable car to Mt. Hoven (1011 m). Great 

walks in the area. If you would like to climb, you can 

try the specially adapted climbing route to the top of 

Mt. Hoven (age limit 12 years). 

Tenpin bowling in Vågsøy 

Here, you can celebrate birthdays, have something to eat and 

drink, bowl, play pool and other fun activities. 

Indoor and outdoor swimming 

Take a bucket and spade with you and explore the following 

sandy beaches in Selje: Seljesanden, Ervik, Hoddevik or Refviksanden 

in Vågsøy. There are also lovely bathing spots further up 

the fjord, such as at Sagaparken in Eid. Alexandra Bad & Spa 

and Scandic Nordfjord have swimming pools and outdoor 

jacuzzis. Gloppen Camping and Byrkjelo Camping have heated 

outdoor pools with a sun terrace and play area. Some of the 

public swimming pools are also open in summer.

Ball courts, playgrounds, sand volleyball courts and mini golf 

can be found in the various municipalities in Nordfjord, often in 

the vicinity of schools. 

Skateboard parks 

At Stryn stadium, Folven Camping in Hjelledalen, Sandane 

center and at Eid Sports Park at Nordfjordeid you will find area 

for skating. 

Walking trips 

There are many child-friendly walks and cultural trails in the 

Nordfjord area, the following areas are particularly suitable for 

children: Trivselsskogen in Sandane, Harpefossen in Eid, trails 

in Stryn and Hoven (Loen Skylift). Contact the Tourist

The Saga island of Selja – Selja Monastery and St Sunniva 

There is something quite powerful, but at the same time 

strangely peaceful about the island of Selja. Shielded from 

civilisation and facing the brutal Stadhavet sea, the Selja 

Monastery ruins and cave stand where Sunniva, the daughter 

of an Irish King, suffered a martyr›s death. In fear of the 

heathens, Sunniva sought refuge in the cave and some years 

later in 996, King Olav Tryggvason found her unscathed body 

buried in the masses from a rockslide. A thousand years later, 

you can still visit the Sunniva cave in which Norway’s first saint 

was found, drink healing waters from the Sunniva well and 

wander in the monastery ruins where English Benedictine 

monks lived a simple way of life. The 14-metre tall tower is 

still standing. Guided tours by boat from the centre of Selje 

during summer and on request.

In search of the Vikings 

Many archaeological finds from the Viking era have been 

made in Nordfjord. Here are a few examples. For more 

detailed information, go tom nordfjordhistorie.no. 

The Myklebust ship, Nordfjordeid. In the burial mounds at 

Myklebust, traces have been found of a 25-metre-long ship, 

which makes it the biggest Viking ship ever found in Norway. 

A full-size replica of the Viking ship is now being built in 

Nordfjordeid. The waymarked Sagaløypa trail takes you to the 

burial mounds at Myklebust, which are a testament to this era of 

Norway’s history. 

Two early Iron Age standing stones can be seen at Naustdal. 

Naustdal in Nordfjord, according to the sagas of Snorri 

Sturluson, is where King Vemund of Firda was burned to death, 

probably in 870. 

Karnilshaugen, Sandane. The biggest burial mound in Western 

Norway. 

Female grave at Sandal in Myklebustdalen valley, Gloppen. 

Finds include amethyst from the Middle East, parts of a 

Frankish funnel-shaped glass and a bronze clasp that probably 

comes from an Irish reliquary. 

Grave and stone cross in Loen. An unburned female grave from 

the early Iron Age. A Celtic stone cross in the churchyard. 

Dragseidet, Selje. When the weather was too poor for the 

Vikings to sail around the Stad peninsula, they hauled their 

boats across the 240-metre high Dragseidet. On the King’s 

mound on top of the isthmus, Olav Tryggvasson converted four 

counties to Christianity in 997. 

Burial mounds in Refvik, Vågsøy. Several burial mounds from 

the late Iron Age. An unburned male grave from the Viking era. 

Runestone on the island of Barmen, Selje. Runes were used as 

a written language from the start of the Christian era.

Nordfjord has developed a reputation as a cultural region with 

the will and ability to think big, and succeed! Nordfjordeid 

even has its own opera house. Some of the biggest events are

October. Opera gala every spring and an Opera Workshop

Museums, galleries and visitor centres 

Jostedalsbreen National Park Centre, Oppstryn, Stryn. Museum 

with film and exhibitions. Film screened in a separate cinema 

auditorium. Exhibitions of landscape models, collection of 

minerals and a geological park, with the county stones from 

all the Norwegian counties. Authorised National Park Centre. 

Nordfjord Folkemuseum, Sandane, Gloppen. The open air 

museum has 44 antique houses from the period 1600–1900. 

Many of them decorated the way they were when they were in 

use. Cultural historical exhibitions indoors, museum shop and 

simple cafe. 

Holvikejekta is the last of the traditional freight vessels, the 

"jektene", sailed the fjords and the Norwegian coast from the 

Middle Ages until the last century. With its 20 meters, 

Holvikejekta is the largest preserved clinker-built boat in the 

country and unique in the world. It is referred to as one of the 

most valuable maritime cultural heritage in the country. 

The boat is exhibited in Sandane, Gloppen. 

Anders Svor Museum, Hornindal. The renowned sculptor 

Anders Svor (1864–1929) has his own museum in his home 

village of Hornindal. There, you can admire most of his 

production, 450 sculptures in all. Ad.p. 29.

Singerheimen, Olden, Stryn. William Henry Singer (1868– 

1943) from Pittsburg USA, lived and worked in Singerheimen. 

They are buried in a private chapel beside the studio. Singer 

was a man of the world and an impressionist artist. In the 

studio you will see some of his finest works of art.

The farm museum at Nedrebergtunet, Stryn. Farm museum 

with a unique exhibition featuring the life of women on a 

19th century farm. Open on request. 

Orheimstunet, Stårheim, Eid. Private collection in memory

Old Bank Culture Centre, Eid. Here, you can see and buy art 

by many different artists. Regular concerts by the pupils of

The Måløy Raid centre, Vågsøy. International war history

Vågsberget trading station and inn dates back to the 1600s, 

and is considered one of Norway’s most authentic and best 

preserved trading stations and inns. Vågsberget is part of the 

Coastal Museum in Sogn og Fjordane and is open during the 

summer for guided tours, and houses a café and exhibitions. 

Otherwise, open by arrangement. 

Hagevik Tøndefabrik, Vågsøy. A barrel-making factory that is 

more than a hundred years old. The only one in the country 

to be listed by the Directorate for Cultural Heritage in Norway. 

The factory produced barrels for salting fish during the boom 

years for the fisheries industry. Guided tours on request. 

Farm visits 

Aabrekk farm in the Oldedalen valley, Stryn. ‘Lykle’ farm fare.

Nave Hjortefarm New deer farm at Nave in Vågsøy, you can

Lighthouses 

the lighthouses in Vågsøy are situated on steep reefs and 

crags, with the roaring sea as the nearest neighbour. They 

were built there to guide ships safely to the harbour. The 

lighthouses have been well looked after and are now popular 

tourist destinations. 

Kråkenes - The Storm lighthouse Beautiful view towards 

Stadhavet, the westernmost sea of Norway. Road access. The 

lighthouse lies on the northern-most and most exposed spot 

on the island. Standing a safe distance from the waves on a 

stormy day, studying the sea is a fantastic experience.

Ulvesund - The Culture lighthouse Lies at Hjertnes on the 

mainland just above Raudeberg. County road to Osmundsvåg.

Skongenes - The Walkers lighthouse One hour walk from 

Halsør in easy hiking terrain. Run by Ytre Nordfjord Turlag

War memorial 

During the Second World War many events took place in 

Nordfjord, which are now mentioned in our history books. 

The most famous event is which took place on Boxing Day in 

1941. Captain Martin Linge and his company attacked the 

German positions in Måløy, Vågsøy. The Måløy Raid actually 

influenced Hitler’s military strategy later on. At Moldøen, 

there are still ruins of the canon positions used during World 

War II. You can find more information at the Måløy Raid 

centre, which opens in 2018. www.maloyraidet.no 

At Sandsstøylen in Gloppen you fill find Russehola (The 

Russians’ cave). Used as a hiding place for a group of Russians 

during the Second World War. A dramatic memorial from the 

war years. 

Eksersisplassen at Nordfjordeid (locally referred to as “Plassen”) 

was founded in 1649, as a military training ground for Eid and 

Hornindal, and is the oldest one in the country. In recent 

years Plassen has been freshened up, and is a pleasant park 

area. All the buildings from the end of the 18th century have 

been restored, and an amphitheatre has been built from 

natural stone, which seats around 500 people.

Nordfjord Taste – all year 

Access to first-rate ingredients, as well as the 

local people’s love of long, good meals is the 

background to the tasty dishes you will be 

served in the region. 

We have an abundance of fruit in autumn. 

Buffet dessert tables abound with plums, apples 

and other fruit from Nordfjord. We can also 

offer apple, raspberry or rhubarb in bottled 

form, either as juice or cordial. 

Deer thrive in Nordfjord, and hunters take to 

the forests to keep herd numbers down and to 

procure delicious meat. We serve secret-recipe 

venison casseroles, and fillets of venison feature 

on the menu on special occasions. The deer 

graze in the mountains and forest, and its diet of 

heather, scrub and foliage gives Nordfjord 

venison its famous flavour. 

Summer-open churches 

Old Gimmestad Church, Sandane. Built in 1692 and is a good 

example of Norwegian church architecture from the time after 

the Reformation. One of very few red-painted churches in 

Norway. It is the second oldest wooden church in Nordfjord, 

and the church has remained virtually unchanged since it was 

first built. Information board on site. Under renovation. 

Loen Church, Stryn. Built in 1837, but on the same spot there 

was previously a stave church from 1360. There is a thousandyear 

Celtic stone cross by the church. This is one of the 

oldest Christian monuments in the country. The church is 

open all summer. 

Olden Old Church, Olden. The only crosschurch in Nordfjord, 

was built in 1759. Excavations under the floor, show that a 

stave church was once located in the same place, and coins, 

amongst other things, from the 13th century have been found. 

The old stave church was demolished in 1746, and a timber 

church was constructed. This church was destroyed during a 

heavy storm in 1757. 

Nedstryn church, Stryn is a long church from 1859. The 

church is made of wood and can seat 400 people. It was 

drawn by Ludolph Rolfsen based on type drawings by Hans 

Ditlev Franciscus von Linstow. 

Utvik church, Stryn. Long church from 1840. The church is 

made of timber and can seat 350 people. 

Eid church is the biggest church in Nordfjord, and can seat 

750. It is known as the ‘rose-painted church’ in Nordfjord. 

The artist and wood carver Lars T Kinsarvik’s magnificent 

decoration of the church interior in 1915 was strongly influenced 

by the national romantic movement. The altarpiece 

from 1892 was painted by Cecilie Dahl. 

Hornindal church. Long church from 1856. The church is 

made of wood and can seat 400 people. It was designed by 

architect Ludolph Rolfsen from Stryn, based on type drawings 

by Hans Ditlev Franciscus von Linstow. The altarpiece dates 

from 1932, and was painted by Dagfin Werenskiold. Selje 

church. Long church from 1866, and it was one of the biggest 

rural churches in the Diocese of Bjørgvin. The church is made 

of wood and can seat 500 people. It has a distinctive organ. 

The church was designed by Frederik Hannibal Stockfleth.

Lamb and mutton delicacies 

Sheep are brought down from the mountains in 

autumn, known as the ‘sheep gathering’. The 

journey ends here for some of them, in the pot 

with cabbage as the traditional dish ‘fårikål’. We 

salt and dry cured meat and sheep’s ribs for the 

Christmas table. Pan-fired lamb chops or a rack 

or leg of lamb all make for a fantastic meal. 

How many lambs from Nordfjord end up as 

sheep’s ribs during the festive season is no easy 

guess, but it’s a lot. There is a tradition of 

‘sheep’s head parties’ here, where tales are told 

and sing-alongs take place around the table, 

and partygoers enjoy ‘eye contact’ with their 

food. 

Pork on the menu 

There are also long pork traditions in Nordfjord. 

How about braised pork with mashed almond 

potatoes and local veg on a summer’s evening? 

Bellypork has become almost as popular in 

Western Norway as it is in Eastern Norway, and 

various pork cold cuts are a must on the 

Christmas buffet table. 

Sweet and salt soups 

Soups are made from local ingredients, hot as 

well as cold, and sometimes as a dessert. Try a 

hearty potato soup, carrot and ginger soup, 

cold pear and raspberry soup with vanilla sour 

cream, or simply a strawberry and rhubarb 

soup. 

The fruit of the sea 

The taste of Nordfjord is perhaps most of all 

about fish. From the fjord, lakes, rivers and sea. 

We have great fresh produce and creative chefs 

who serve impressive fish dishes. 

Legendary char from Hornindalsvatnet lake, 

northern Europe’s deepest lake, is served as 

exclusive rakfisk (partially fermented trout), 

tasty smoked char or pan-fried with the right 

trimmings. 

The crab season starts in August, and there is an 

abundance of fresh crab. The people of 

Nordfjord love to hold parties, where crab, 

prawns, langoustines and lobster feature on the 

menu. Lutefisk (dried cod preserved in lye) is 

another story altogether, and one of the two 

companies that make this dish is based in 

Nordfjord, Per Stave in Selje. And did you know 

that 85% of the mackerel in the company 

Stabburet’s popular tinned mackerel in tomato 

sauce is landed in Selje?

The scenery of Nordfjord is the most beautiful 

in Norway, and its majestic mountains and 

deep fjord are the perfect backdrop to winter 

experiences. At the coast, winters are often 

mild with little snow, while further inland it 

often snows, which means there are many days 

with powder snow. In Nordfjord, you will find 

world-class skiing terrain and great ski centres 

with prepared tracks set in the beautiful and 

spectacular scenery of Western Norway, often 

with great views of the fjord. A trip to Nordfjord 

can be spiced up with summit trips, surfing at 

Stad, spa and wellbeing treatments, and tasty 

meals prepared from local ingredients, or you 

can just enjoy the dramatic winter landscape 

of the fjords. The winter season in Nordfjord

Alpepass no - one ski pass - nine ski centres 

Alpepass is a joint ski lift pass that is valid for nine 

selected destinations in Nordfjord and Sunnmøre. The 

pass includes the ski centres in Stryn, Harpefossen and 

Hornindal. The pass gives you access to: 33 lifts, over 

60 downhill slopes, 800-metres of altitude difference, 

terrain parks, freeskiing and lots of snow and fun,

4 km from the centre of Stryn. In the child-friendly area 

at the bottom, there is a ski tow for small children and a

Climate and weather 

Nordfjord, like the rest of western Norway, has a 

variety of weather conditions. Summers can be warm 

and nice, with temperatures climbing up to 30 C, but 

they can also be chilly with temperatures as low as 10 

C. In coastal areas winter often comes with relatively 

warm temperatures and not a lot of snow, while inland

Interesting islands 

On the island of Selja, a 15-minute boat ride from the village 

of Selje, lie the ruins of the 12th century Selja Monastery, one 

of the best preserved monastery ruins in Norway. On the 

idyllic island of Silda, you can walk for hours on car-free 

roads, perhaps enjoy a swim, and finish off with a bite to eat 

and ‘something on the side’ at Skjærbuda restaurant. The 

island of Barmen is situated between Selje and Flatraket. Here 

you can study historic sites, or enjoy some fishing in rivers 

and lakes that abound in fish. The scenery is magnificent, and 

the distinctive profile of the mountain is the origin of the 

name Barmen, which means ‘bosom’. Marked walking trails. 

Many burial mounds and antiquities. Signs of settlement 

dating all the way back to the Stone Age. Runestone. Area for 

camper vans and tents.

Popular driving routes 

The old Strynefjell Mountain Road (RV258) 

National tourist road, built in 1894, that winds over 

the mountain between Stryn and Skjåk. For many 

years, the gravel road was the only connection 

between east and west, and the Norwegian Public 

Roads Administration has reerected the row of 

guard stones so that the tourists will feel as though 

they are travelling on the old road. Do not miss the 

amazing stone bridge Jol bridge, on your way up 

the mountain side. Along the national tourist road 

you’ll also find a summer skiing centre, picnic

The Panorama Road (RV 613) 

The trip follows the northern side of the fjord 

through the communities of Blakset, Fjelli, 

Randabygd/Hopland, Hennebygda and Lote 

(38 km). Start 6 km from the centre of Stryn. The 

Panorama road has taken its name from the 

fantastic views it affords of the fjord. The altitudeabove 

sea level varies from 0–approx 550 m. 

Particulary good viewpoints are at Nordsida 

church, Nos and Kvalen. On the route you can also 

take in the culture trails at Ulvedal and at Hammer 

– the Tvinnefoss waterfall, and other historic 

attractions. 

Rumbling waterfalls 

Tvinnefossen waterfall, Nordsida, Stryn. Here you can walk 

behind the waterfall and see through the cascading waters. 

Nice view over the Nordfjord. 

Glomnesfossen waterfall, Hjelledalen, Stryn. Near the path to 

Sigdestad, an old farm which lies 280 meters above 

Oppstryn lake. 

Videfossen waterfall, Videdalen valley, Stryn. At the start of 

The Old Strynefjell mountain road. Here the waters thunder 

and roar as they dive to the valley below. NB! Parking fee. 

Øvstefoss waterfall is located along the RV 15 road at the end 

of the Hjelledalen valley, about 300 metres before the turn 

off to Gamle Strynefjellsvegen road. Spectacular view of the 

magnificent waterfall and the narrow gully through which the 

river flows. 

Kleivafossen waterfall, Briksdalen, Stryn. On the way to the 

Briksdal Glacier you will pass the Kleivafossen waterfall. One 

of the most photographed motifs in Norway is the horse and 

trap on the bridge with this waterfall in the background.

Volefossen waterfall, Briksdalen, Stryn. From the mountain 

lodge in Briksdalen, you can admire the 300-meter free-fall 

of Volefossen waterfall. Information board. Parking fee. 

Ramnefjellsfossen/Utigardsfossen, Lodalen, Stryn. One of the 

most magnificent waterfalls in the world, placed 11th on the 

list of the worlds highest waterfalls. 

Krunefossen waterfall - Spectacular waterfall. Also on the list 

of the world’s highest waterfalls. 

Eidsfossen waterfall, Sandane, Gloppen. Here is one of the 

world’s highest salmon stairs. Drive in there from main road 

E-39. Information board on the site. 

Holvikfossen waterfall, Sandane, Gloppen. It is possible to 

walk up to the waterfall from Kleivedammen pound, or via the 

toll road from Fjellbygda. 

Sandalsfossen (120 m) and Strupen (820 m), Myklebustdalen 

Valley, Gloppen. Strupen is placed 10th on the list of the 

world’s highest waterfalls. Under Mt. Snønipa (1827 m.a.s.) 

you will see this beautiful waterfall.
