Mr & Mrs Fairdeal …
WOW! 20 YEARS, SERVICE FOR MR
& MRS FAIRDEAL
Where has that gone, yes
March 6th 1998, we took over the
FAIRDEAL from Jack and Enid who
ran it for the previous 16 years, with
Nev and Betty before them for 10
years, it was Betty who came up
with the name so it all started with
them, and all of them over the years
have been brilliant with us offering
help, advice and
encouragement to try
new ideas so
first off we
want to thank
them for that.
Around 1997
we were
thinking of
setting up our
own business of
some sort as our
son would be
going to school
full time soon and
thought it was a great opportunity
to try so we enrolled on a small
business course at the college were
we learned a lot about the ins and
outs of running a business, the help
available etc, and we came up with
a few ideas and we even went to
the bank and secured a business
manager and funding to proceed
with one of the ideas however we
couldn't find a suitable premises
and it was at that time we heard
Visit our web site - www.bolsover1st.co.uk
that FAIRDEAL was for sale so we
had a talk and went to see Jack and
Enid, and the rest as they say is
history.
After working in factories
on three shifts until we got the shop,
I thought running a shop would be
easy, how wrong was I it\'s not just
the opening hours (which are great)
its the late nights and some
Sundays at the wholesalers buying
new
stock, it\'s
doing the
accounts
to keep
on top of
them,
but
believe
me
Julie or
myself
would
not
change it for
anything we both enjoy serving our
customers sometimes just with a bit
of advice or help with something,
we like to think it is a shop were if
someone just calls in for a browse
around and a quick chat they are
more than welcome ( but they have
to buy something on the way out)
only joking.
Things changed for us
when Tesco came to Clowne as it
did for a number of businesses but
it's called progress and it is now a
big part of the village, we had to
adapt what we sold introducing
different items and ideas, we started
looking into key cutting, helium
balloons and engraving pet discs
which we started selling and have
found them to be useful additions
to our shop and we have stuck it out
even when Wilco came once again
we altered our stock again and
things have been good for us, but
we couldn't have done it without
our customers and for that we are
extremely grateful for there
kindness and support over the year.
So here's to the next 20
years of FAIRDEAL and
hopefully we will still be
there serving our fantastic
customers or just having a
chat with them, and as we
think we are just custodians
of the shop we hope it will
carry on after that with a
new Mr and Mrs FAIRDEAL!
Your Mind Matters With Roxy…
Hi readers,
I’m Roxanne
Rhodes and I’m a
psychotherapist,
clinical
hypnotherapist
and coach with a
private practice in
Clowne.
So, it’s all
change for me this month.
By the time you read this
hopefully I’ll be all settled in
but as I write I am under a
siege of building work being
done to get my new office
Roxy
ready for you all. I’ve been in
my office at Station Business
Centre for three years, and
have loved it, but have
always intended to bring my
practice to my home (well,
garden!) as soon as I could.
I was so sad when I
emptied my old office. It was
like the last episode of
Friends where they all leave
their key behind. It made me
question whether I was
doing the right thing and I
didn’t really expect any of
these emotions. It made me
realise how much we define
ourselves through the work
that we do. The office on
Station Road was where I got
to be professional and use
my brain, where I got to
leave being mum behind,
where I gain time to reflect
and space to breathe. As I
write this, I have my
three-year-old yelling that he
can’t find his camper van,
and my one-year-old
smearing pear juice up my
leg. I have to think about
cooking and cleaning and
nappies and making the
builders tea. I have to do my
accounts, book doctors
appointments for yet another
eye infection and find a time
slot to go to parent’s evening
at the boys’ nursery.
I love going
to work. I adore
adult
communication
and the
satisfaction from
helping a client
work through their
issues is immense.
I gain great
pleasure in seeing people
move forwards and towards
the life that they want to live.
This move is about that for
me. The doubts come from
being concerned about how
others would judge me.
Whether having a garden
office isn’t “professional”
enough. Whether I need to
be able to offer a “business
premises”. Then I realised
that this step for me is about
me moving my life in the
direction I want it to go.
Imagine if a client cancels
and I can stroll back to the
house and unload the
washing. I can eat lunch
with my husband most days.
I talk so much about starting
to live the lifestyle that you
want, rather than waiting for
it to be given to you. Sure,
there are restrictions, but
most of them are simply
fears that we place in our
own way.
So, I did it. I gave up
my office, and my new one is
gorgeous. Quiet, peaceful
and beautiful. I’ll be starting
to see clients in it from late
March to early April so feel
free to drop me an email if I
can help you in any way.
See you next month.
Although spring is meant to be
around the corner, there’s
plenty of cold weather to
confine us to the great indoors
in the next month. Here is
what you can watch at the
cinema in March and keep
warm at the same time.
Coming Soon…
Egorova emerges as the most
dangerous Sparrow after completing the
sadistic training process and as she
comes to terms with her new abilities,
Dominika meets a CIA agent who tries
to convince her that he is the only
person she can trust.
There are plenty of Jennifer
Lawrence fans to draw audiences into
this one but it does help that there’s
plenty of action and drama to keep you
entertained. Joel Edgerton (The Black
Mass, The Great Gatsby) and Jeremy
Irons (Die Hard with a Vengeance).
Release Date: 1st March 2018
In time for Easter, the story of
Peter Rabbit and his friends is coming
to the big screen. The original stories
were first published back in 1902 and
written by Beatrix Potter and are the
favourite stories of many children and
adults alike.
Peter Rabbit (James Corden), his
cousin Benjamin (Colin Moody), and
his triplet sisters Flopsy (Margot
Robbie), Mopsy (Elizabeth Debicki)
and Cottontail (Daisy Ridley), spend
most of their days picking on Mr.
McGregor and stealing his vegetables
from his garden. They are friends with
a local woman named Bea (Rose
Byrne) who spends her time painting
pictures of the rabbits as well as the
surrounding nature. Bea takes on a
mother-like relationship with the
rabbits due to the passing of their
mother and father. One day after Mr
McGregor suddenly dies of a heart
attack Peter invites all his woodland
friends who have now taken over
McGregor's old house.
McGregor’s nephew, Thomas
(Domhnall Gleeson) moves into the house
hoping to refurbish and sell it for lots of
money. Although because the house is
already occupied a war breaks out
between Thomas and Peter for the rights
to the house and also for the affections of
Bea. Lots of traps and nuisances are
caused which lead to some funny
moments.
A story loved this much for so many
years will definitely draw a crowd so don’t
wait to see this one, with or without the
kids.
Tomb Raider
The series of films based on the
video game is being rebooted with a
new Lara Croft taking the reins. This
time in Lara’s shoes is Alicia Vikander
(The Danish Girl) and we start at the
beginning on her first expedition in
which she embarks on a perilous
journey to her father’s last known
destination, hoping to finally solve the
mystery of his disappearance.
Vikander definitely looks the part
as she takes on the iconic figure of Lara
Croft, not only from the Angelina Jolie
series of films but also the hoards of
dedicated fans of the original video
game. They’ve ramped up the action, the
stunts and the special effects so let’s
hope it gives the audience something
they haven’t seen before.
Midnight Sun
Sheltered since early
childhood, Katie Price (Bella
Thorne; Shake It Up, The Duff),
now 17, lives with a
life-threatening sensitivity to
sunlight caused by the rare
genetic condition.
During the day she is
housebound, having only her
father, Jack (Rob Riggle; 21
Jump Street) for company. But
it’s after dark that Katie’s world
opens up, when she ventures
out to play her guitar for
travellers. One night, she meets
Charlie (Patrick
Schwarzenegger), an ex-high
school all-star athlete, whom
she has secretly admired for
years. She hides her condition
from him and the two begin a
romance where Charlie shows
Katie things she’s only dreamed
of.
Based on a Japanese film of the
same name, Midnight Sun is a typical
romance story about two people who fall in
love. It may be a predicable romance but
the performances are refreshing and worth
a watch.
Elmton Is The Smallest Village In Britain In Bloom 2018 Finals …
Elmton, a tiny village in
Derbyshire has been selected as
one of only seventy six
communities in the UK for this
prestigious competition.
As winner of the ‘Best
Small Village in the East
Midlands’ for the past three
years, Elmton is by far the
smallest settlement in
a competition that
includes much larger
villages, towns and
cities.
With only forty-five
properties and an
electoral population of
only sixty-four
Elmtonians consider it
a great honour to have been
selected.
Elmton
was originally
an Anglo-Saxon
village and is
recorded in the
Domesday book
of 1086. At that
time it was
named Helmetune after the elm
trees that were once a major
feature.
It is a small village steeped
in history. Archeological
excavations have shown
evidence of human occupation
within the village boundaries
since prehistoric times.
Elmton residents are
delighted to have been selected
for this prestigious competition
and look forward to competing
with the likes of Clovelly,
Aberdeen, Truro and
Ballymena.
Elmton was first
entered into the
regional competition,
East Midlands in
Bloom in 2005.
Between 2006
and the present day
the points score has
gradually risen and
the bronze award has been
converted into silver and finally
silver gilt. The aim of
residents in the village
is to ultimately receive
the cherished gold.
Elmton has been the
EMIB winner in the
‘small village category’
five times.
Elmton is nominated as an
RHS Britain-in-Bloom finalist –
a nationwide campaign
intended to encourage and
celebrate the positive impact of
gardening in the communities.
Elmton is one of 76 groups
from across the UK competing
across 12 categories.
The 2018 Chesterfield Retail Awards
has stepped up a gear.
For the first time, the popular
awards will be hosted as a glittering
black-tie ceremony at the Winding
have been presented at an afternoon
tea. Up to 200 store owners, retail
business community are expected to
attend the ceremony which is now in
its fifth year.
Secret Chesterfield…
By author Richard Bradley
The Derbyshire town of
Chesterfield has a long and
interesting history. It has been a
market town for the surrounding
area from the Middle Ages,
receiving its charter in 1204, and
still hosts a large open-air market
today. During the construction of
the railway in the 19th century it
was discovered that Chesterfield
sat within a large coalfield and
the history of the town and the
surrounding area became
associated with mining and
manufacturing until the closure
of the mines from the 1980s.
Today there are few signs of
mining with many sites returned
to countryside and the town is
bustling, still overlooked by the
famous crooked spire of the
retail workers and employers of
apprentices in the Apprentice of the
Year and Apprentice Employer of the
Year categories.
Commenting on the change of
format, Dom Stevens Manager of
Destination Chesterfield said:
“Becoming a sponsor is an excellent
opportunity to get involved with the
town’s developing retail scene.
“The awards have grown more
popular year on year and the clear
message is that local businesses are
keen for Destination Chesterfield to
further promote the quality and
diversity of retailers across the town to
attract further inward investment.
“With so many developments
underway and so many new retailers
arriving in Chesterfield, now is an
excellent time to raise the profile of the
Chesterfield Retail Awards further and
we are pleased to be able to host the
fifth event as a black tie ceremony.”
Castle Street Medical Centre …
We held our February
meeting on the 19th, and we had an
invited guest speaker Mr Stevan
Chambers. Stevan outlined the work
carried out by the Chesterfield
Volunteer Group, from where the work
is carried out by the volunteers. Some
of the work can be small jobs for
elderly people, or people with
disabilities. These can be carried out
by Safe & Sound Handymen. He gave
us an example where an elderly lady
contacted them when her washing
line broke. Within THREE HOURS, a
volunteer had gone round with a new
washing line and fixed it. Stevan has
been a volunteer for over 29 years,
and all the group are DBS checked,
and can go out to talk to people over
50. The group can be contacted by the
internet, or by phone and sometimes
by referral. They get some MacMillan
funded referrals, but more funding
would be welcome. There is a need for
volunteers from around Bolsover and
NE Derbyshire. There are two
Friendship Cafes on Thursdays at the
church on Rose Hill, one from 10.30
am, and one from 1.30 pm, with a £2
fee.
There are about 300
elderly being supported by the group.
The group are trying to obtain funding
from the Callendar TV news
programme, where groups are asked
to apply, and then the public are
asked to vote for the one they think is
most suitable. Voting forms can be
obtained from the centre in
Chesterfield, or from any member of
the group.
Centre get referrals, from the three
surgeries in Bolsover, and one in
This means that if you feel
the need to make a referral, then
please contact the
HAIR - BEAUTY & NAIL SALON
centre, or call in at the
surgeries listed.
We thanked Stevan for
his report and told him that we would
do our best to promote the group.
The PPG then went into a
PRIVATE session, where we had OPEN
discussions on items relating to the
group.
Just one item to report,
ARIES March 21st
- April 20th
Work will be stressful at the
beginning of March, with too
many responsibilities being
heaped on your plate. The Full
Moon on the 2nd will tear you
away from a relaxing interlude,
making you irritable. Try not to
take out your frustrations on a
colleague who is suffering just as
much as you. It's not their fault
you are in this situation. By
forming an alliance, you can chip
away at your list of things to do.
On the 17th, the New Moon will
give you an opportunity to
withdraw from public life and
enjoy some solitude. If you're in
love, this would be a great time to
connect in a meaningful way with
your partner. Stay away from
annoying distractions like social
media, 24-hour news cycles and
phone calls from needy friends.
Another Full Moon on the 31st
urges you to recommit to a
partner or break up altogether.
TAURUS April 21st
- May 21st
A romance will meet a turning
point on the 2nd, due to a pivotal
Full Moon. It's time to decide
whether you're going to get
serious or part ways altogether. If
you are in a committed
partnership, things will be tense
between you and your amour.
Don't let your practical approach
to life undermine your love. A
group activity on the 17th will be
more fun than expected, thanks to
a relaxed New Moon. If you've
been looking for love, you will find
it with one of your teammates.
Have you been yearning to
develop your creative talent? An
accomplished artist in the group
will be happy to mentor you. This
will be the beginning of a
beautiful friendship. Make sure
you attend a festive party towards
the middle of March. A flirtatious
conversation will give you an
Russell Grant’s Horoscopes - March
attractive glow. On the 31st, a
second Full Moon urges you to
clear out clutter and tidy your
work space.
GEMINI May 22nd
- June 21st
Your living situation will be
difficult at the start of the month.
A Full Moon on the 2nd urges you
to find a home where you feel
supported and nurtured. If you
live too far from work, think about
getting a place closer to your job.
Spending all your time
commuting has a suffocating
effect on your personal life. Look
for a place that is close to a park
or garden. Beautiful plant life has
a powerful effect on your outlook.
The New Moon on the 17th marks
an exciting career opportunity.
Getting a promotion will allow you
to exercise your creative muscles.
Be open to learning advanced
techniques from colleagues. At
times, these lessons will be
intense. When someone pushes
you hard, strengthen your focus.
The skills you acquire will serve
you well and contribute to further
career success. Another Full
Moon on the 31st warns against
rushing things with a love affair
or creative project.
CANCER June 22nd
- July 23rd
An upsetting exchange on social
media will get under your skin. It's
best to stay away from threads
involving politics, religion and
current events. Someone who
posts an offensive remark on the
2nd is looking for a fight. Taking
their bait will be serious cause for
regret. A comment made in anger
could come back to haunt you;
wait a full day to respond to
upsetting remarks. The New Moon
on the 17th will excite your spirit
of adventure. Launching a
business, going back to college or
going an overseas trip are among
the possibilities. You're tired of
following the rules. Stepping out
of your familiar routine will be
liberating. If you're single, you'll
meet someone special as a result
of taking a gamble. Do you have
a partner? Taking a new direction
will bring you closer together. On
the 31st, a second Full Moon will
cause disruptions on the home
front. Prepare for a family quarrel.
LEO July 24th
- August 23rd
Money from a job will be less than
expected on the 2nd, due to a
tense Full Moon. Let this be a
lesson moving forward. If
someone has violated a contract,
you will have to get help from a
legal professional to recoup your
fee. Think through whether you
want to go to the trouble and
effort of a court battle. It may be
better to cut your losses and leave
this disappointment behind you.
On the 17th, the New Moon helps
you draw closer to someone you
love. Whether you decide to move
in together, get engaged or
exchange vows is immaterial. The
important thing is making a
commitment to someone who has
been loyal through good times
and bad. Being the recipient of
unconditional love has made you
a better person. A second Full
Moon on the 31st urges you to be
on the alert for someone who is
taking credit for your ideas.
VIRGO August 24th
- September 23rd
It will be difficult to talk sense to
a friend, romantic partner or
business colleague at the
beginning of March. The Full
Moon on the 2nd has you
working at cross purposes.
Although it pains you to do so, it
may be necessary to step aside
and allow them to make a terrible
mistake. The New Moon on the
17th finds you making a fresh
start with someone special. If
you've been fighting with your
amour, take this opportunity to
forgive past mistakes. Are you
single? You could meet someone
special at a spiritual, cultural or
artistic gathering. This psychic
connection will be powerful and
reassuring. It's a relief to finally be
with someone who understands
your quirks and admires your
quest for perfection. Beware of a
tendency to be hypercritical with
your amour. On the 31st, you may
be tempted to leave a steady job.
Don't quit until you find another
position.
LIBRA September 24th
- October 23rd
The Full Moon on the 2nd brings
a painful secret to light. You feel
betrayed by someone who kept
their motives hidden from you.
This manipulator will try to get
back into your good graces. Don't
be fooled by their apparent
apologies. Well intentioned
friends might urge you to forgive
20 Please tell your Local Business where you saw their Advert
and forget, but turn a deaf ear to
their advice. You're not going to
be fooled again. On the 17th, the
New Moon presents an ideal
opportunity to start a job. Working
for a company that appreciates
your creative ability will be
refreshing. Have you been worried
about your health? This would be
a good time to start a fitness
regime. Improving your diet,
taking regular exercise and
getting more sleep will make you
feel better. When you treat
yourself well, others will do
likewise. A second Full Moon on
the 31st causes friction in a close
relationship. Your partner will
disapprove of your plans.
SCORPIO October 24th
- November 22nd
A group project comes to fruition
on the 2nd. If you've developed
tender feelings for one of your
teammates, keep them to yourself.
The object of your affection has
been maintaining a false front.
When you get to know them outside
of this alliance, you'll see
some unpleasant qualities that
are highly disturbing. If you're
looking for love, you'll have a
much better chance for finding it
on the 17th. That's when the New
Moon will put you in the path of
someone who excites your
imagination. Are you already in a
relationship? Seize a chance to
showcase your creative ability.
Selling your work to a publisher,
boutique or gallery will be a
tremendous source of pride. Word
will spread of your talent and
you'll get some special
commissions. On the 31st, the Full
Moon will urge you to release a
grudge. Dwelling on the past is
making you bitter.
SAGITTARIUS November
23rd - December 21st
An embarrassing situation could
occur on the 2nd, due to a tense
Full Moon. Someone will try to
blame you for their mistakes.
Instead of getting defensive, it will
be better to accept this accusation
with good grace. An executive
who understands the score will
reward your noble attitude. The
New Moon on the 17th draws an
excellent property deal into your
orbit. Take this opportunity to buy
or sell a house. Alternatively, you
could welcome someone into your
household. Making space for a
baby, elderly relative or roommate
will be cause for celebration. This

2018 Call us on 01246 828378
addition to your home will make
it a happy, cheerful place. Have
you been arguing with a relative?
Take this opportunity to extend an
olive branch. Healing this breach
will relieve a great deal of stress.
The Full Moon on the 31st urges
you to monitor the company you
keep. Break ties with a shady
manipulator who pretends to be
your friend.
CAPRICORN December
22nd - January 20th
A creative project will get a mixed
reception on the 2nd. The Full
Moon has created an air of
confusion. Some people will
instinctively love your work, while
others will simply dismiss it. Try
not to take the rejection personally.
Instead of letting a
disappointment get you down, use
it as a launch pad to future
success. On the 17th, the New
Moon prompts you to launch an
advertising campaign, blog or
writing project. Discussing a
subject that is close to your heart
will pave the way to strong
friendships. It's reassuring to
realise others feel as passionately
as you about certain books,
movies and musical styles. You're
tired of feeling like an outsider.
Make some alliances; they'll serve
you well in surprising ways. A
second Full Moon on the 31st
urges you to conserve your energy.
Don't let a person flatter you into
accepting a thankless job. Protect
your interests.
AQUARIUS January 21st
- February 19th
Go over your financial statements
with a fine-toothed comb on the
2nd. That's when the Full Moon
will bring some troubling
information to light. If you discover
fraud or unauthorised activity,
notify the authorities immediately.
If you discover a romantic partner
has been accessing your account,
you must cut ties immediately.
Don't listen to lame excuses. You
deserve a relationship that is
founded in loyalty and trust. The
New Moon on the 17th attracts a
lucrative job offer. Taking this
position will put you on the path
of financial stability. It will also be
emotionally fulfilling. Getting paid
to help others will renew your faith
in humanity. There are many
people like you who are working
hard to make the world a better
place. Join forces; you won't be
sorry. A legal matter could come to
a disappointing conclusion on the
31st, when a second Full Moon
highlights a fundamental injustice.
PISCES February 20th
- March 20th
Bolsover 1st Mar/Apr 2018
A troubled partnership could
finally come to an end. The Full
Moon on the 2nd will convince
you to explore greener pastures.
Saying goodbye to a friend or
romantic partner who doesn't
meet your needs will be a relief. If
you've been working with an
unappreciative business associate,
you'll finally be able to part ways.
The New Moon on the 17th invites
you to do something nice for
yourself. Changing your hairstyle,
revamping your wardrobe and
undergoing a cosmetic procedure
are among the possibilities. The
important thing is to put your
needs first. If you've been longing
to go on a glamorous trip, book
your tickets. This holiday will be
empowering. Instead of doubting
your abilities, your self-confidence
will become stronger than ever.
This is great news. A large
payment or financial gain will be
delayed on the 31st, when a
second Full Moon cultivates
greedy behaviour.
THE WORLD’S LEADING
TRIBUTE TO COLDPLAY HEADS TO
CHESTERFIELD
Coldplace, the world’s
number one tribute to the legendary
Coldplay, comes to Chesterfield for
one night only on 27 th April at The
Winding Wheel, as part of their
2018 UK tour.
Promising to be an
unforgettable evening with an
electric atmosphere of dazzling
lasers and lights, tremendous
sound and the songs you know and
love from Coldplay, this really is an
event not to be missed.
Formed in 2004 by
frontman Shane Crofts, Coldplace
have performed around the world
with their leading tribute, and most
recently have performed at Chris
Evans’ Car Fest alongside Kaiser
Chiefs, The Jacksons and Mel C. The
band has also appeared on BBC
Radio One and Two, The Gadget
Show, Sky News, and performed
alongside musical legends
Coldplace - Coldplay Tribute…
such as Sir Bob Geldof and Ringo
Starr.
“Our 2018 tour is the
biggest tour we have done to date
across the UK, and we’re so excited
to be coming to Chesterfield,” says
Shane. “We have developed our
show production to a level now
where it works in a theatre
environment, which gives us more
scope to enhance the show with
pyrotechnics, lasers and visuals,
which we’re really excited about. We
have recreated the incredible
spectacle of Coldplay’s recent ‘A
Head Full Of Dreams’ sell out tour,
on a scale that is accessible to
everyone.”
Having played over 700
shows in 28 different countries
around the world, Coldplace are no
strangers to being on the road, and
they love exploring new places.
"We love coming to this
part of the UK and meeting the fans,
as everyone is so friendly and
welcoming," continues Shane. “We
hope you all enjoy our new show
that we have worked extremely
hard on to produce for you.”
Coldplace is made up
of lead singer Shane Crofts, lead
guitarist Dean Stewart, bass player
Asa Crofts and drummer Wayne
Birch. Having performed so many
times together, the band are very
much in tune with each other,
creating
the harmony Coldplay itself
delivers on stage.
“We spend hours and
hours studying Coldplay, from the
way they move on stage, their
mannerisms, the way they hold their
instruments, how they address the
crowd, and what they wear, to
ensure we create an accurate stage
show,” explains Shane. “It’s not just
a case of learning their songs, but
how they are delivered. We want to
guarantee fans an authentic
performance.”
Tickets are available from
www.coldplace.co.uk/tickets and
are priced from £20.00
Well it appears winter is
well and truly making itself felt
and as so many articles are
written about dogs in hot cars in
summer I thought it was worth
writing one about some of the
things to think about in winter
as well.
Cold - The first obvious peril
of winter as for all of us is the
cold. Some dogs will feel the cold
much more than others. If you
have a Bernese Mountain dog
it’s probably safe to say on your
average walk they won’t need a
coat on. However, if you have a
Lurcher or a Chihuahua it is
worth investing in coat to help
keep them warm when out and
about.
Also in very cold weather
dog’s paws can get frost bite as
well as irritated by the salt so if
you are a fashion follower some
doggy boots or if not some paw
cream can be inexpensive and
well worth using.
As well as considering the cold
on walks consider it when you
put your dogs in the garden or
yard for any length
of
PETS CORNER - Caring For Your Dog In Winter…
time. Like humans’
dogs can become
hypothermic and at
worst this can cause
death. Don’t shut them
out for long periods of
time without warmth
or shelter.
Also think about
where your dog sleeps and
ensure they aren’t in cold drafts
and that overnight the
temperature doesn’t drop too low
where they sleep.
Road salt – It has become
more commonly known but road
salt often used on pavements as
well as road is in fact toxic to
dogs. Not necessarily by walking
on it, although this can cause
irritation, but by licking off when
they get home. If grit and salt
has been used and your dog has
been walking on it is worth just
giving their feet a rinse and
towel to get it off when they get
home.
Anti-Freeze – This solution
can be fatal to all animals
including dogs. If you are filling
your car, see others doing the
same or have bottles around be
extremely careful. If you think at
any time your dog has
consumed anti-freeze don’t
delay take it straight to the vet.
Bulbs – On the subject of
poisons as we
all wait for the spring flowers to
come through beware of your
dog digging the bulbs up as they
see the first shoots. Many flower
bulbs while fun to play with are
entirely poisonous to dogs if they
eat them.
Ice – Dogs aren’t great at
ice skating so be careful when
they are off leash near ponds.
The won’t tell the difference
between the solid ground and
the thin layer of ice on the water.
The can run out and come
unstuck very quickly and the
temperature of water at this time
of year can very quickly cause
shock and death in a dog and
indeed a human who attempts
to go out to rescue them.
So for now I hope you and
your pet stay warm and enjoy
the winter season.
Until next month…
The First Food Barn In The North…
…has been granted planning
permission in Chesterfield.
The Batch House will feature
a mix of bars, restaurants,
start-ups, street food traders and
a demo kitchen, as well as
offering creative flexible space on
the upper atrium floors.
Common place in many
European towns and cities, the
concept of a food barn offering
quality artisan food in a casual
relaxed environment is only just
beginning in the UK. The Batch
house is going to create that
atmosphere for Chesterfield and
its surrounding neighbours.
Popping up all over London,
food halls offer diners a range of
exciting food and drink all under
one roof.
The Batch House is an
integral part of Blue
Deer’s latest project,
The Glass Yard. It’s
going to bring
people
together who want
to create something
special, whether that
is food, products, or
experiences.
Directly opposite
Chesterfield’s Proact
football stadium, the barn will
form an imposing centrepiece of
the whole project with its
eye-catching design, and will be
surrounded by 18 state-of-the-art
office buildings.
The whole project has
already attracted exciting local
businesses, as well artisan food
producers from across the country,
all sharing the ethos of:
“Whatever you sell,
make or create,
make it as good as
you can”.
Tim Turner,
Blue Deer founder,
said: “I’ve visited
food destination
buildings in lots of
European towns
and cities and
always have the
same thought
‘why don’t we do something like
this back home in Derbyshire’.
Now we’re going to.
“The Batch House will bring a
European culture and experience
to Chesterfield and its neighbours
that is currently springing up all
over London.
“We know from the interest
we have already received just
how much support there is out
there for this project, and now
planning
permission has been granted we
are in the position to make it
happen. Is Chesterfield ready for
this? We think so!”
Heather Small - The Voice Of M People …
…plays SHEFFIELD – Foundry on
Saturday 21st April!
Heather Small, born 20th
January 1965, grew up on a West
London council estate. From going
to Sunday school and attending the
'Good News Club', religion and faith
became an important aspect of
Heather's life. Growing up in 70's
Britain and not wanting to be
stereotyped or treated differently,
Heather knew that she wanted to
make something of herself.
Even though Heather battled
with shyness and severe nerves, she
joined her first band Hot!House who
released two albums in the late 80's.
As Part of M People, hits such as
'Moving On Up', 'One Night In
Heaven' and 'Search For The Hero'
and albums like Elegant Slumming,
Bizarre Fruit and Fresco achieving
massive worldwide success,
Heather became one of the seminal
British voices of the 1990s,
with the band winning the
Best British Dance Act Award
at the Brits in 1994 and 1995,
as well as the Mercury Music
Prize for Elegant Slumming.
Heather has since had great
successes with two solo
albums – the title track of her
'Proud' album has gone on to
become the soundtrack to a
whole host of very special
events including London's
successful 2012 Olympic bid,
the 60th anniversary of VE
Day in Trafalgar Square, the
launch of Queen Mary 2, the
Tsunami Relief Concert,
England's victory at the
Rugby World Cup
celebrations, and the official
ceremony marking the
handover of the Olympic
Games from Beijing to
London.
And when Oprah
Winfrey was looking for a
song to sum up the work she'd
been striving to achieve over her
twenty-year career, she got in touch
with Heather, who somehow
managed to squeeze in a trip across
the Atlantic to perform on the show
right in the middle of her last UK
tour with M People ('If Oprah calls,
you go!' she laughs, adding that the
first lady of chat was 'very sweet to
me').
In 2008, Heather embarked on
a journey that would see her dance
her way into the public’s affection
as she became a contestant in
Series 6 of the BBC's 'Strictly Come
Dancing'. Heather's infectious
personality and her trademark
sense of humour earned her
appearances on a number of TV
news and chat shows including
Paul O'Grady, Alan Titchmarsh,
GMTV, BBC Breakfast, The Wright
Stuff, Newsnight, as well as special
appearances on The Weakest Link
and Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?
2009 was another busy year for
Heather as she took to the road
again with her band completing two
highly successful UK tours in May
and November, performing at over
30 venues nationwide to sell-out
crowds. She also continued her TV
work with regular slots on music,
entertainment, and politics shows,
including 'Dancing On Wheels', a
wheelchair dancing
competition-come-documentary
airing on BBC Three in early 2010.
In the Autumn, Heather
teamed up with singing sensations
Anastacia and Lulu for the critically
acclaimed 'Here Come The Girls' –
an unforgettable night of feel-good
party music and dance, touring
arenas across the UK and Ireland
during November and December
2010.
Well known for her charitable
work, Heather was recently
made an ambassador for the
children’s charity Barnardo's
and is continually involved
with fundraising and helping
lend her valuable support to
projects around the country.
So what gives Heather
the impetus to keep moving
forward, to keep challenging
herself, to keep trying new
things and not resting on her
laurels? 'If you got the feeling
I do when I sing' she smiles,
'you'd understand'.
