LITERACY
is the root of learning
At JCDS, literacy training begins in our Pre-K 3
program. By the end of 1st grade, students are
writing imaginative sentences and paragraphs.
Older students write complex essays and original
stories, inspired by their teachers and their own
inventiveness.
JCDS teachers provide students with various
opportunities to demonstrate their mastery of a
subject. Using technological “power tools,” they
may produce a video, a collage, a podcast, or a
slide show along with a live oral presentation.
Students are encouraged to collaborate with
peers, which promotes teamwork and
responsibility.

Teachers at JCDS construct their lessons to address
each student’s individual learning style. Differentiated
learning sets JCDS apart because our instruction is
not one-size-fits-all.
Research shows how vital the fine arts are to a wellrounded
education. JCDS students attend both art
and music classes on a regular basis throughout the
school year. Our fine arts specialists are accomplished
and gifted artists in their own rights and collaborate
with classroom teachers to integrate the arts into their
core subjects.
The body is as important as the mind. Our
students receive daily physical education classes
where athletic skills are honed and good
sportsmanship is encouraged. JCDS promotes healthy
living through our tasty and nutritious lunch program.
Protein, fresh fruits, and green vegetables are offered
daily and students are encouraged to keep wellhydrated
throughout the day.

Our classroom teachers integrate a variety of technologies into
their lessons — not to replace traditional learning but to enhance
it. Interactive screens complement the conventional white board.
Tablets provide young students with a 21st-century option to
practice cursive writing.
In 2010, JCDS adopted the Singapore math curriculum, which
guides students from concrete skills through abstract mathematical
thinking. Using model drawing and other methods of visualization,
students develop a sense for numbers and build a strong
mathematical foundation.
In our makerspace, also known as the Shark Lab, students use
their minds and hands to produce original creations through the
combination of science and technology. Various activities include
robotics, 3-D design and printing, video production, woodworking,
and sewing. Many students enjoy spending additional time in the
Shark Lab before and after school to work on their projects.
Each student at JCDS has access to computers or tablets. The
early learning and primary grades use iPads for practice in reading,
writing, Spanish, and math. Screen time is appropriate per grade
level. Our 1-to-1 iPad program for students in 4th through 6th
grades allow 24/7 access to assignments, along with the apps and
tools to complete their work.

EXPRESSION
The opportunity to be creative is one of the more important facets
of a child’s education. Students who can express themselves in
various ways, and in various media, can be more productive in
today’s world.
Students have the opportunity to develop their artistic talents in
our fully equipped studios during their regular scheduled times as
well as after school. Student artwork is proudly displayed in various
locations throughout the school. Gallery-style art shows allow young
artists to exhibit their work to all students and parents. JCDS student
artwork is displayed at Jacksonville International Airport and is
enjoyed by travelers from around the globe.
Students who love performing can bask in the spotlight. Each
grade level puts on a musical show for the student body and parents
every year. The award-winning JCDS chorus sings at school events
and various engagements around the state. The Jazzy J’s play
beautiful music on Orff instruments while the JCDS band is often
compared to middle-school bands in performance quality.

At JCDS, our parents play an active role in their child’s
education. Parent Ambassadors welcome new parents and
make them feel like part of the JCDS family.
The Parents’ Association sponsors major events
including the book fair, carnivals, vision screening, and the
annual gala.
Moms and dads are invited on campus for various
events throughout the year. Our annual Grandparents Day
offers a glimpse into grandchildrens’ school day at JCDS.
JCDS has a lively alumni association. Alumni play active
roles in the everyday life of current students by supporting
many of the fundraising events, volunteering, serving on
school committees, and contributing their expertise to
school projects and activities.
