This February I have been away from the Kychan
Team and from college so I can join the Youth
Stop Aids Speaker Tour. I’ve been touring the
UK, sharing my story, helping to stop stigma and
plug the funding gap. We travelled to Plymouth,
Brighton, the Medway, Canterbury, Cardiff, Leeds
and Manchester. It may sound weird (well, I am
a bit weird) but I loved the long car journeys.
They were the best! Each night we stayed in
student housing, dorms, and one of the nights
we stayed in an Airbnb. We didn’t sleep in plush
accommodation but doing the tour was such a
great experience. Each day we woke up and on
our way to each city we picked up breakfast and
lunch from service stations. I slept in the car the
majority of the time whilst travelling – typical me!
And then we ate dinner in lovely restaurants and
pubs in each city and attended our events in the
evenings. The events were such an eye-opener
and a great way to draw people in. We collected
lots of signatures, a note for Allistair Burt in our
big story book and educated a lot of people at the
same time. The tour was great but also very tiring.
I am glad I was scouted for the tour but also glad
to be home to rest. I am learning more and more
how to look after my body and how to prevent
hospital stays.
conversation we had changed
Q: If you could go back in time to an
age, what age would you choose?
A: 30-35
Q: Why?
A: Because I feel I would be old
enough and young enough.
Q: If we gave you two roses and the
chance to meet a male celebrity, who
would be your choices?
A: If Prince was still alive he would get
both roses and I would just request to
just sit in a group talking about faith,
music, fashion… I would just have to
be in the same group as him.
Q: Prince is not around! Who else
would you choose?
A: Hands down Jay Z. I’ve always
liked him from the first moment I saw
him on TV. I would like to spend time
with you, Kyrah and the Carter family
hanging out in the queue of a ride
at the fun fair, having a laugh at silly
situations that arise and then parting
going our separate ways after the ride.
The other rose would go to Lee Seung
Gi – a South Korean singer, actor and
presenter. I also liked him from the
first moment I saw him and once again
to just be with him on a day out would
be fantastic. I don’t need to meet
them through any special one-to-one
arrangement.
Q: Ok so you’re not going to answer
that question! What are your
favourite movies?
A: Dance Hall Queen, The Harder They
Come, Purple Rain, Girls Trip, Black
Panther, Totoro, Urban Hymn. The
series I like right now are Underground
and A Korean Odesey.
Q: So whats your favourite chart
music at the moment?
A: Jason Derulo’s Tip Toe – I love the
artistry, imagination and everything
that went into the video. Then Clean
Bandits I Miss You, I like them and
Snow Patrol. I also like the song where
that girl tells her ex to shut up and get
lost! The theme song from A Korean
Odessy “When I saw you” and I’m not
sure if it’s in any chart still but I love
“I can make your bed rock” by Young
Money, Nicki Minaj and Lil’ Wayne.
But now it’s 2am and I want to go to
sleep, what more do you want from
me?
Q: What advice would you give us?
A: Get off my bed, take four steps to
the right, turn right take six steps and
shut the door behind you. GO TO BED!
So there you are, a brief conversation
turned into a Q&A interview.
Q: What factors would you say makes
a good mum?
A: Don’t know, go look for one and
ask them.
Health
Headaches are a common symptom we may
all experience at some stage in our lives.
Headaches could be a sign of many things:
being overly tired, using the computer too
much, studying too much, eye problems,
being dehydrated, bad posture, coming
down with a cold or flu, stress, drinking too
much alcohol, not eating regular meals, or
more serious problems like head injuries,
high temperature and more. Most headaches
go away on their own and aren’t a sign of
something serious.
Here are a few things you can do to help
ease your headaches:
1 ) Try to relax as much as you can.
Sometimes when we have overworked
ourselves and are doing too much our body
says it has had enough and that’s when we
may start to feel symptoms of a headache.
Relax and do not stress yourself out - stress
can make headaches even worse. Sit down,
have a nice cup of tea or juice and make time
for yourself.
2) Drink lots of water. The cause of your
headache could be dehydration, especially
if you may be coming down with a cold or
flu. In the winter we tend to drink less water
because we feel we do not need it, even
though our bodies need it to function and
keep us active.
3) Take pain medication such as paracetamol
or ibuprofen. These can help relieve the pain.
It is also very important that if you have a
cold or flu to rest as much as you can.
4) It may sound weird, but exercising when
you have a headache is very useful.
Things you must not do when you have a
headache:
1) Skip meals. We often may feel like we don’t
want to eat, but it is very important that you
eat and give your body the nutrients that
it needs. You may even have a headache
because your body is hungry.
2) Do not drink alcohol as this could make
your headache worse.
3) When you have a headache, it is important
that you do not strain your eyes. Take more
time away from your screens as they could
make your headache worse.
PLEASE NOTE: If your headaches keep on
coming back, painkillers do not help, you feel
sick, are vomiting or have other symptoms
such as your limbs feeling weak, make sure
you see your GP. See your GP urgently if you
start to get blurred vision, your scalp feels
sore or your jaw starts hurting. Call 999 or
visit A&E if you’ve injured your head badly,
you have sudden problems remembering
things or speaking, loss of vision, you have
a very high temperature, you are feeling
drowsy or confused or your headache has
come on suddenly and is extremely painful.
At College…
Should I get
a job too?
Lynne Howe
Director of
Crea8ing Careers
You’ve started college
or university and you’re
thinking of getting a job.
You have doubts about
whether it’s a good idea,
so here are some points
to consider.
Pros
• Additional cash is
always beneficial
• Employers like
candidates that have had some previous
real-world work experience
• You can gain insight into a career that you’re
considering if you can find
a role in a relevant sector
• You can gain business knowledge
in a real work environment
• Real work experience of any kind will give you
a different understanding of the real world of
work which will be beneficial in the future
• You’ll learn many new skills that will be
beneficial when you graduate and looking for
your first “real” job
• You will build your confidence
• You will learn about job searching and will
mean it doesn’t feel so scary when you start
thinking about a career
• You get to meet other people from all walks
of life and not just others that are studying
Cons
• You lose time to study and it may impact your
results
• You will have less time to spend with friends
and family
• It may not be relevant to what you want to do
as a career
• The work hours may leave you very tired and
unable to study
14 Kychan Teen zine / Mar 2018
0319_A5_Kychan_20pg_Mag_Mar18_2.indd 14 05/03/2018 09:36

• You may not be earning that much money
• Working is an added pressure, so can you cope
with both work and study?
In general, gaining work experience will be
beneficial to your development of soft skills,
real world knowledge and experience, and
build confidence, along with any financial gain.
The main thing is to ensure that you don’t let it
impact your studies.
Do
• Make sure you can get to all your classes and
have enough time to get to work, too.
•Be realistic about the number of hours you can
work, so you have enough time to focus on
study, rest and still have some social time.
• If possible, find a job that will support your
future career plans.
• If the job is not part of your career plan, make
sure you are learning soft skills that can be
transferred regardless. Really, it’s hard for
this NOT to be the case, as even bar work will
teach you how to cope in a busy pressured
environment, develop customer service skills,
and manage complaints, which will be useful in
any career.
• Make sure you are earning enough to cover the
cost of getting to work.
• If you have taken a voluntary role or internship,
make sure you have budgeted for additional
costs for travel or food.
• If you get a job and the conditions,
treatment of staff or anything else concerns
you, speak to a trusted person with
experience, such as parent or carer, teacher
etc and discuss your concerns. It may be that
you are just not used to how things work but
some employers make take advantage of
your lack of experience. So make sure to talk
it through with someone
Many young people end up working in
bars or restaurants and other roles in the
hospitality industry as the hours can be fitted
around college times. This can be fun as there
are likely to be others of a similar age too, but
the hours can be late and long.
However, particularly with the growth of
online working, there are many other roles
that can also be explored. Freelance research
analysts, writers or bloggers, private tuition,
and online services such as proof-reading,
and translation work are just some of the
possibilities to consider.
It may even be possible to set up a small
business such as Josh Magidson, Founder of
eatStudent.co.uk who developed an online
platform to view local takeaway menus and
get direct delivery. He eventually sold his
company to JustEat for £500,000.
So, simply think through your options and
explore the possibilities. Don’t be too worried
and go for it!
Chikanyima Young FEMale
EMpowerment
Q1) Give me a brief introduction
about yourself
First of all, I want to say a big thank you to
the founders of Kychan Teen for giving me
this oppurtunity in the first place and that
I am truly greatful. My name is Chikanyima
Uzoh and I am a fourteen-year-old student
that attends a school in Southwark.
Personally, I enjoy writing fictional works,
I have a passion for writing spoken words,
poetry and other pieces of what I consider
art that has an impact of some sort on the
general female audience.
Q2) At what age did you start
up your campaign? And what
inspired you to want to start up
your campaign?
I started this campaign recently and
I was inspired by the whole dramatic
experiences I was getting caught up in
halfway through secondary school. I was
hearing stories about girls being tagged
as "skets" for wearing clothes that we
do not consider average. I was hearing
stories about girls who were my age being
"heartbroken" after relationships that
lasted less than a month, I was hearing
more of the "boys are trash" sentence and
around me there seemed to be girls who
wanted to make a change but were scared
of doing so. I saw and spoke to girls who
I'd never in a lifetime think were different
from the group they hung out with,
and I was generally surprised with how
outspoken they were with issues regarding
females. This truly encouraged me to start
something big that would help girls speak
out, to bring awareness to things that we
are slowly beginning to treat as normal in
our society and to empower those who still
wish to remain silent.
Q3) What is Femem and what is
your aim?
Firstly, the name Femem was derived from
the term "FEMale EMpowerment" and we
are a female teenage group. As for our
aim... Honestly, I don't know. Who knows?
Maybe we manage to get the attention of
thousands of girls, maybe we don't. Maybe
we end up running half a marathon and
stopping there. To me having the mindset
of starting this was a completion of a
marathon on its own. As long as we are
able to have an impact, even if it's just on
one girl, then that itself will be the greatest
achievement ever.
Q4) What are your aspirations in
life? Do you know what you want
to do when you leave school?
When I leave school, my initial plan is to go
to sixth form and do subjects that give me
a boost towards studying law at university.
My dream job is to be a human rights
lawyer.
only find in them individually. The drama,
the gossip and all the snarky insults about
one another beneath all of this is still there.
I want to make as many changes to this—
especially in the way we view each other—
as I can before I leave secondary school.
Q6) What are your thoughts
about getting your campaign
into other schools?
We are starting small and so if we're able to
get ourselves across to other schools, that
will be amazing. I want to be able to reach
out to as many girls as possible and I want
to let them know that, sis: “Fe” means ‘iron”.
so we're not just females, we're freaking
Iron Man!
Q5) Your campaign aims to target
BME girls within secondary
schools. How do you find it
attending an all girls Catholic
school?
My feelings towards attending my school
vary because there are days where the
atmosphere is just light-hearted and
everyone is getting along and then there
are days where the atmosphere is ugly and
it seems like a fight might break out at any
moment. Being in an all girls school can be
pretty crazy but I mostly enjoy it because
most of the people I interact with all have
different personalities and things I can
