United States Department of Housing and Urban Development HUD Invests in Washington, D.C. HUD is the Department of Opportunity. True to its mission, HUD is working closely with state and local leaders across Washington, D.C. to promote homeownership, support community development, and increase access to affordable housing, free from discrimination. Below are some examples of HUD at work in Washington, D.C.. Housing Highlights Building Stronger Communities in the Century of Cities Since 2010, HUD has invested $78 million in the District through the Community Development Block Grant Program. CDBG supports a broad range of public improvements for places like community centers and parks. Ending Homelessness On any given night in Washington, D.C., HUD helps to shelter 7,352 persons experiencing homelessness. HUD is currently providing permanent homes for 709 formerly homeless veterans and has helped house 879 homeless veterans since 2008. Helping Families Secure Quality Housing The Federal Housing Adminstration (FHA) insures the mortgages of 11,015 Washington, D.C. homeowners, helping drive a statewide homeownership rate of 42.5 percent. Easing the Rental Crisis HUD provides 37,704 Washington, D.C. households with rental assistance. That assistance impacts 73,024 individuals who reside in those households. Creating Sustainable Communities HUD programs are designed to support next-generation sustainable housing and communities. Since 2010, HUD has helped produce 1,184 healthy and energy-efficient homes in Washington, D.C. Leveling the Playing Field HUD is committed to ensuring that every American has the chance to pursue housing opportunities free from discrimination. Last year in Washington, D.C., HUD resolved 24 housing discrimination cases affecting 31 people. hud.gov

Below are some examples of HUD at work in West Virginia. Housing Highlights Building Stronger Communities in the Century of Cities Since 2010, HUD has invested $107 million in the State through the Community Development Block Grant Program. CDBG supports a broad range of public improvements for places like community centers and parks. Ending Homelessness On any given night in West Virginia, HUD helps to shelter 1,583 persons experiencing homelessness. HUD is currently providing permanent homes for 311 formerly homeless veterans and has helped house 608 homeless veterans since 2008. Helping Families Secure Quality Housing The Federal Housing Adminstration (FHA) insures the mortgages of 26,285 West Virginia homeowners, helping drive a statewide homeownership rate of 74.4 percent. Easing the Rental Crisis HUD provides 33,619 West Virginia households with rental assistance. That assistance impacts 58,508 individuals who reside in those households. Creating Sustainable Communities HUD programs are designed to support next-generation sustainable housing and communities. Since 2010, HUD has helped produce 1,845 healthy and energy-efficient homes in West Virginia. Leveling the Playing Field HUD is committed to ensuring that every American has the chance to pursue housing opportunities free from discrimination.
