Raleigh 400 A major historical date for your calendar This year is the 400th anniversary of Sir Walter Raleigh’s execution at the Palace of Westminster (29th October 1618). Undoubtedly, Raleigh is one of the most famous Devonians and I suppose you could consider him as a polymath of sorts, he was a master of sailing, navigation and exploration, a poet, courtier, soldier, writer, politician and spy. It’s no wonder that queen Elizabeth was taken with him. His accomplishments were many and it was a tragedy that he finally ended up having to suffer execution. Without doubt, he was one of the most notable Elizabethan figures. Lustleigh Cleave Walking the same route can get a little boring at times, sometimes you have to grab the OS map and venture out into the unknown (there’s still nothing to beat an OS map). It’s great exploring the countryside, once you’re out in the greenery you can clear your mind of all the distractions of our modern age. Lustleigh Cleave is a pristine piece of countryside, it’s our very own bit of Devonshire Rain Forest, the trees being festooned with moss and lichen - it’s a very special place (see Lustleigh Cleave walk further on). will be able to see The Boyhood of Raleigh (by Millais) at Fairlynch Museum in Budleigh Salterton. There are numerous lovely walks also, particularly along the river Otter. Unfortunately, it’s not possible to visit the house, but you are afforded a fine view from the roadside. We’ve put together in this issue a visit guide to East Budleigh, because this humble little village houses some notable gems. The Raleigh family worshipped at All Saints church in East Budleigh centuries ago and it has an outstanding collection of original mediaeval carved pews, one of which being the Raleigh Pew. There’s also a portrait of him in the church. You may wish to sample a Raleigh 400 Ale in the Sir Walter Raleigh Inn whilst taking a rest (don’t miss the feature further on in this issue). There are other interesting attractions within several miles, such as Bicton Park Botanical Gardens (read later on) and from 28th May to 31st of August you This issue sees a feature on Devon’s River Birds by Andy Stuthridge, there’s also an extensive photo-visual feature and walk at the beautiful Lustleigh Cleave with the Editor. We review Gidleigh Park hotel at Chagford and also visit the relatively new Smugglers Kitchen at Beer. Also, don’t miss our review of the Alfa Romeo Quadrifoglio, kindly loaned to us by Vospers, Exeter. If you’re keen on cars, this one’s a real fire-cracker.
