the comedy strip and stopping into a few bars for some
underground stand-up - some were hits, some were misses. All
were fun.
As for food, we had to stop off at Shake Shack and The Burger
Joint to try some of the famous NY burgers. Our first lunch in
New York was spent at Roberta's, which was a small hole-in-the
wall in Brooklyn that you wouldn't expect much from until you
walked through the front, graffiti-covered door. Needless to
say, my pants didn't fit quite as well by the end of the fourth
day.
We managed to keep our spending down by not really shopping
for clothes, but rather paying for experiences such as food,
drinks, and a few Ubers to get back and forth. The biggest
money saver was walking everywhere that we wanted to go.
Even taking long walks around Manhattan saved us the time and
money in pre-planning what we wanted to do next and paying
for it on the spot. Instead, we took a few strolls around various
neighbourhoods and stopped to explore whatever caught our
attention. Unfortunately, because it was so cold we couldn't
spend as much time as we wanted to outdoors, we resorted to
hiding away in shops or restaurants until we warmed up enough
to keep walking. Even our ride on the ferry to Staten Island was
bitter-sweet because of how tired and cold we were before
hopping on it.
The most memorable experiences for me were the few
locations from Sex and the City that my boyfriend surprised me
with. He held my hand and led me down the intricate streets
that I knew nothing about, all the way to Carrie Bradshaw's
apartment on Perry Street. We also stopped off at Magnolia
Bakery for a cupcake before continuing our long walk around
the city, admiring the beautiful architecture.
Despite New York being similar to Toronto, I can see why so
much creativity from artists that preceded me flourished
amongst the tall buildings and looming fire escapes. I hope to go
back some time in the near future and explore what was left
behind; what we missed in our elation of being somewhere new,
somewhere unexplored, and somewhere we felt so welcomed
and comfortable in. ✈
