Overall food production<br />
goes up due to govt's<br />
measures: Mannan<br />
SYLHET: Bangladesh has<br />
been able to attain sufficiency<br />
in food production as the<br />
overall agricultural<br />
production has been<br />
increased mainly due to the<br />
government's agricultural<br />
friendly measures, said state<br />
minister for finance and<br />
planning MA Mannan,<br />
reports BSS.<br />
"We have been able to attain<br />
autarky in food production<br />
despite adverse weather<br />
condition and different<br />
natural disasters because the<br />
government has ensured<br />
timely supply of agricultural<br />
inputs," said Mannan while<br />
speaking at the reunion<br />
function of ex-students of<br />
Agriculture Training Institute<br />
(ATI) here yesterday.<br />
Diploma agriculturists have<br />
been playing important role in<br />
making the country selfsufficient<br />
in food production,<br />
he said, adding that the<br />
government has been working<br />
to ensure the use of modern<br />
technology in agriculture.<br />
He said the present<br />
government has ensured<br />
availability of power at rural<br />
areas to support irrigation. It<br />
is also providing subsidy on<br />
fertilizer and seed, he added.<br />
About various demands of<br />
diploma agriculturists, the<br />
state minister assured them of<br />
taking steps to upgrade their<br />
pay scale as per the Prime<br />
Minister's assurance.<br />
Youth should be built<br />
as social contributors<br />
RAJSHAHI: The youth,<br />
particularly the students in<br />
higher seats of learning,<br />
should be built as competent<br />
workforce so that they can<br />
contribute positively to the<br />
society and the nation as<br />
well, reports BSS.<br />
The young generation is a<br />
vital power for the nation<br />
and they must be built as<br />
active citizen through<br />
enhancing their level of<br />
confidence. Time has come<br />
to generate leadership<br />
personality among the youth<br />
through need-based<br />
training.<br />
The observation came at<br />
the closing session of a fourday<br />
'Active Citizens Youth<br />
Leadership Training<br />
(ACYLT)' at Agriculture<br />
Training Hall in Tanore<br />
upzilla under Rajshahi<br />
district on Friday. "Globally<br />
Connected, Locally<br />
Engaged" was the main<br />
theme of the programme.<br />
The Hunger Project-<br />
Bangladesh (THPB) and<br />
British Council jointly<br />
organised the training with<br />
the goal of creating a new<br />
generation of young leaders.<br />
A total of 32 students<br />
including 16 girls from<br />
different educational<br />
institutions in the Tanore<br />
thana took part in the<br />
course.<br />

Two female<br />
students killed<br />
in Jessore road<br />
accident<br />
JESSORE: Two female<br />
students were killed in a<br />
road accident in front of<br />
First Security Bank at<br />
Bagachra Bazar area in<br />
Sharsha Upazila of the district<br />
yesterday morning,<br />
reports BSS.<br />
The deceased were identified<br />
as Fatima alias<br />
Roza,12, a class seven<br />
female student of Bagachra<br />
Girls School and College,<br />
daughter of Alomgir Kabir,<br />
residence of Baguri village<br />
and Zerin Khanom, <strong>11</strong>, a<br />
class six female student of<br />
the same Institution,<br />
daughter of Ibrahim<br />
Hossen of the same village<br />
in the upazila.<br />
In-charge of Bagachra<br />
police camp Inspector<br />
Humayun Kabir confirmed<br />
the accident.<br />
Police said, the accident<br />
occurred in the area when a<br />
speedy sand-laden truck<br />
hit Bagachra College<br />
teacher Alomgir Kabir's<br />
motorcycle around 8am,<br />
while they were going to<br />
school riding motorcycle,<br />
Roza and Zerin dead on the<br />
spot and Alomgir injured.<br />
Police also seized the<br />
truck but its driver and<br />
helper fled from the scene.<br />
A case was filed in this<br />
connection.<br />

administration on the<br />

Science and Technology<br />
Week-<strong>2018</strong> as the chief guest.<br />

over the function.<br />
Speaking on the occasion,<br />
Maleque said the country has<br />
achieved tremendous success<br />
in the digitization process for<br />
reaching services at people's<br />
door steps in a hassle free<br />
manner. He said people are<br />
getting digital services like e-<br />
governance, e-education, e-<br />
agriculture, e-health, and<br />
other services easily which<br />
accelerates the uplift activities<br />

'Food Friendly<br />
Programme' makes poor<br />
people happy in Rajshahi<br />
RAJSHAHI: Poor and<br />
extreme poor people of the<br />
division are very happy after<br />
getting quality rice at Taka 10<br />
per kilogram under the<br />
government's "Food Friendly<br />
Programme", reports BSS.<br />
"We are getting quality rice<br />
this time without facing any<br />
irregularities," said Mohsin<br />
Ali, an elderly man, who came<br />
to purchase rice at Bijoynagar<br />
crossing under Godagari<br />
upazila.<br />
Another beneficiary Hazrat<br />
Ali, who came to buy rice at<br />
Bornaly crossing, said the<br />
quality of rice is very good.<br />
This type of rice is being sold<br />
at least Taka 50 per kilograms<br />
in the markets, he added.<br />
Md Muniruzzaman,<br />
president of Rajshahi<br />
Chamber of Commerce and<br />
Industry, said poor and lowincome<br />
group people were<br />
seen in long queues at all<br />
selling points to purchase<br />
rice.<br />
More than 7.73 lakh<br />
extreme poor families in all<br />
eight districts under Rajshahi<br />
division have started getting<br />
rice at a rate of Taka 10 per<br />
kilogram (kg) since Sunday<br />
last.<br />
The selected card holders<br />
will get 30 kilograms of rice in<br />
every month through village<br />
ration dealers at a rate of Taka<br />
10 per kg under the "Food<br />
Friendly Programme".<br />
"Requisite number of<br />
village ration dealers has<br />
already been appointed at all<br />
unions of the division to sell<br />
the rice," said Md<br />
Muniruzzaman, regional<br />
controller of Food in<br />
Rajshahi, adding "We will<br />
distribute 2.31 lakh tonnes of<br />
rice through 1,329 dealers."<br />
The government wants to<br />
provide food support to the<br />
extreme poor families during<br />
the crisis period so that they<br />
do not suffer for food crisis.<br />
For every 500 families, a<br />
village ration dealer has been<br />
appointed for distributing the<br />
rice smoothly while the<br />
widows and physically<br />
challenged people are getting<br />
priority in the programme.<br />
The food controller also<br />
said that the rice selling<br />
programme at Taka 10 per kg<br />
will continue for two months<br />
of March to April. The<br />
months have been selected in<br />
view of non-availability of<br />
work for the day-labourers,<br />
he added.<br />
Simultaneously, Open<br />
Market Sale (OMS) of rice<br />
and flour has also been<br />
launched everywhere in the<br />
division. Some 108 dealers<br />
including 30 in Rajshahi are<br />
selling the goods.<br />
He, however, vowed to take<br />
punitive measures against<br />
those who will engage in any<br />
irregularities during the<br />
programme.<br />

alleged drug peddler with 813<br />
bottles of phensidyl from a<br />
filling station under Shibganj<br />
upazila of the district early<br />
hours yesterday, reports BSS.<br />
The arrested was identified<br />
as Md Belal Hossain, 22, son<br />
of late Chana Mia of Bajitpur<br />
Purbopara village under<br />
Nawabganj upazila in Dinajpur<br />
district.<br />
RAB sources said, acting on<br />
secret information, an operation<br />
team of RAB-5 from Chapainawabganj<br />
camp raided<br />
M/S. Sumon Filling Station at<br />
Kansat Gopalnagar square<br />
around 12:15am and detained<br />
a covered van. After searching<br />
the covered van RAB found<br />
the bottles of phensidyl and<br />
arrested Belal. Later, he was<br />
handed over to the police of<br />
Shibganj Thana with a case.<br />

They viewed there is no<br />
scope of preventing<br />
occurrence of natural<br />
catastrophe but there is<br />
scope of reducing damage<br />
and other casualties<br />
through the best uses of<br />
modern technologies and<br />
communications.<br />
Besides, the persons with<br />
disabilities and other<br />
challenged people should be<br />
given priority in the<br />
activities and process of<br />
disaster reduction as they<br />
become more victimized in<br />

The speakers stressed the<br />
need for a comprehensive<br />
approach for reducing the<br />
prevailing risks of the<br />
natural disaster and said<br />
importance should be given<br />
on local resource<br />
mobilization through<br />
creating mass awareness to<br />
attain the cherished goal.<br />
They put emphasis on<br />
integration of disaster risk<br />
reduction into sustainable<br />
development policies and<br />
planning side by side with<br />
development and<br />
strengthening of institutions<br />
and mechanism.<br />
Fine-arts competition for<br />

by the fire brigade and civil<br />
defense personnel were also<br />

planning message to them<br />
especially those who live in<br />
remotest<br />
and<br />
underprivileged areas.<br />
Highlighting the necessity<br />
of expediting the villagelevel<br />
family planning<br />
activities, Nur-Ur-Rahman<br />
underlined the need for<br />
giving top priority to<br />
motivating the fertile<br />
couples so that they could<br />
control their unwanted<br />
pregnancy through using<br />
contraceptives. He stressed<br />
the need for hundred<br />
percent institutional<br />
delivery and prevention of<br />
the child marriage through<br />
joint efforts of government<br />
and non-government<br />
entities concerned.
