Editor’s Letter
There is no doubt that women are better administrators.
Given half the chance to be in control, the world would be
better ruled and be a better place. Women have the innate
ability to multi-task yet be prescient on each activity. It’s an
uncanny gift men do not possess. Men are easily distracted,
especially by the scent of a beautiful woman! History is
replete with men who fell from Olympus height just because...
but, not the woman.
And so, on March 8, the world marks the day of the
woman. Set aside to celebrate women’s achievements, the
International Women’s Day focuses all attention on the woman.
There are speeches, seminars and pledges to give women more
opportunities at decision making and political positions but
more often than not, it is more ying yang. In practice, women
are still given only token positions as if women need
permission even to soar!
Why can’t there be a woman president, an elected woman
governor in Nigeria? After all, it happened in Liberia! I will
tell you why? Fear, that the woman will do better and, thus,
expose the weakness of our leaders.
Allure, today, celebrates ‘Outstanding Women Under 50’;
women who have achieved tremendous success in their various
private endeavours. The 20+ ladies on the cover are just a
small number in the sea of successful entrepreneurs,
professionals in Nigeria. Space will only allow for this number.
Imagine if these ladies had their future truncated when
they were in the boarding school? The Chibok Girls and now
Dapchi 110 have had their future compromised! No chance of
becoming that woman the Almighty had designed for them.
Or, do they still?
Is it a case of being let down by a complicit administration
that gives easy passage for all things wanton to befall its
citizens? Another four years of this, wouldn’t Nigeria
incinerate? If not Fulani herdsmen, sexual perverts in the
guise of militants! Only God knows what tomorrow brings. As
Barack Obama says,’’Don’t stay home.
Vote.’’
R .
Enjoy your week!
looking fab all day and all week.
LOUD LOGOS
BELT BAGS
There’s a real gamut of
bag trends this season, but
if one stands out the
most above the rest,
and it is the belt bag.
So many iterations
exist, from the sporty
pouches you will see girls wearing
Fendi! Gucci! Balmain! Versace!
Balenciaga! Calvin Klein! No
major brand could leave their
own labelling alone for this
season and we can not blame
them—if you are spending the
big bucks, you may as well shout
it from the sartorial rooftops.
It does not matter
what kind of belt, just
know that a waist
the season’s bigger
money on, it is a perfectly tailored suit. These
days you can find the style to match your
personal taste because the concept is a nowconstant
fixture on the runways. Whether you
want to make a statement or opt for something
more subtle, there are 1001 versions out
there. And the best part is, they won’t date.
longer-lined and therefore more flattering.
They will replace your full-skirted midis
With International
Women’s Day and
Mother’s Day celebrated
time to get back to work.
Motherhood can be very
exhausting, but a mother
can get back to work
again and look chic with a
few guidelines. The key to
looking chic as a mum, is
to figure out what outfits
work best for you keeping
your body type in view.
If you can’t figure it
out, there is no harm in
copying a celebrity whose
body type is like yours.
What is important is to
be confident and stylish.
Choose clothes that work
you do.
Belt Bag
Distinct from the fanny
pack, a belt bag is of a
pouch or coin purse that is
attached to, but separated
from the belt. It’s a much
easier item to style, but it
doesn’t have the size of a
fanny pack. Think of it as
your go-to choice for casual
nights going dancing,
because all it will carry is
a bit of cash and maybe a
phone.
elements, you imagine them classing up a
studs are one way to get around that, it
gives the bag a punk feel.
While we understand that the likes of the Hermes Birkin
and Chanel 2.55 bags have owned the so-called ‘it’ bag
title for decades, and there is no doubt there will be women
who continue to buy them for years to come, nothing feels
better than having different bags to flaunt for different
occasions.
From the structured work bags, oversized, transparent,
floral to studs and beaded bags, here are the collections of
bags you need to own and love. This season’ bags come
with some fun twists, with the right amount of tassels and
other statement details that command all the attention.
Tassels
Tassels are a fun element that is
easy to create out of spare leather,
and it always adds extra interest
to a bag or purse. We saw all
manners of tassels of different
shapes and sizes decorating the
CELEBRATING
OUTSTANDING WOMEN
UNDER
Compiled By - Linda Orajekwe
The world, on March 8, marked the
International Women’s Day with the
theme ‘#PressforProgress’. It was a
call for women to be included in all
facets of development and decision making. No
doubt, women have come a long way from the
days of the suffrages. Now, there are women
presidents, women astronauts and in virtually
every sector, women stand shoulder-toshoulder
with men.
Women have, indeed, proven themselves and
Nigeria has no shortage of women who have
done remarkably well in their respective
endeavours. Today, we celebrate over 20
women under the age of 50 who have done
tremendously well professionally.
These women have broken off from
stereotypes, broken barriers at home and in the
corporate world, shattering stereotypes and
inspiring younger generation of women to
dream because their dreams are valid and
achievable; that all glass ceilings can be broken
and they can also be decision makers in their
respective industries.
This list is a compilation of some strong
women in Nigeria who have shown, practically,
the endless possibilities in life and their zeal to
pursue these possibilities have inspired women
before and after them.
Lagos Fashion and Design Week cannot
be discussed without mentioning its
founder, Omoyemi Akerele, whose efforts
have tremendously boosted the growth of
the Nigerian economy by encouraging
fashion entrepreneurship through her
annual fashion week which she started in
2011. The Week introduces African
fashion brands to the international
market, giving Africans a yearly fashion
expose everyone loves to be a part of.
She is the founder and executive
director of Style House Files, a fashion
business development agency that
focuses, primarily, on the Nigerian and
African fashion industry and has
successfully given African fashion brands
opportunity to showcase on ‘Pitti
and Design Week.
Bisola Borha is one of the leading event
planners in Nigeria. Also known as “The Event
Planner Extraordinaire”, before establishing
‘Trendy Bee Elite Events’ officially in 2013,
she worked briefly with Nigerian Liquified
Natural Gas (NLNG) Limited.
It was while working at (CDIL) that she
started to help out at weddings, parties and
other events. Recognising that this was more
than just a hobby and her passion to manage
outstanding events – individual or corporate
– with great focus and confidence, Bisola
Borha established Trendy Bee Elite Events.
She went on to apply for an event
management course at the Lovegevity
Wedding Institute in the USA with the aim of
making her brand a signature event outfit,
producing jaw-dropping moments and
customer satisfaction. So far, the
extraordinary event planner has come
through, living her dreams with what started
off as a hobby.
For some people, their purpose is in their
struggles; that is the case of the Chief Executive
Officer of Elizabeth R, Ibidun Ighodalo, who, after
struggling emotionally and physically in an
attempt to have children, has made it her duty to
help couples dealing with infertility through her
foundation, Ibidun Ighodalo Foundation (IIF). The
purpose of the foundation is to create awareness
on issues concerning infertility and provide
treatment grants to couples struggling with those
issues.
Some of the treatments involve ‘In Vitro
Fertilisation’ (IVF) and Intrauterine Insemination.
These are not undertaken by the foundation on its
own as it partners with highly reputable clinics in
Nigeria and donors to provide support, financial
and other resources needed by couples during
treatment.
She organised the first ‘Parent-in- Waiting
Conference’ in 2017 when ten couples were
given grants to cover the cost of fertility
treatments. Her event planning company,
Elizabeth R, continues to rank as one of the best
in its sector for creating exquisite and upscale
events that bring unforgettable memories.
Sleep Together, Stay Together
Talk
SPOT
By - Yemisi Suleiman
What some of your favourite
celebrities said and we listened.
Bed time should be for sleeping, for sex and
conversation and not for scrolling mindlessly through
your social media handlers; face book, twitter and
lnstagram feed.
Going to bed together allows room for pillow
conversation, thus, fulfilling the three C’s – connection,
clarity and communication within the relationship.
Making headway to bed together, allows you to
stay on the same schedule. If a partner goes to bed at
a later time, there is the possibility of waking the
sleeping mate and when this becomes a habit, there is
the tendency that anger and resentment can build up
and cause tension in the marriage.
Retiring for the night in unison promotes intimacy.
God wants married couples to be intimate regularly. So
when you are not in the same place at the same time,
it makes it difficult to do so. Do not make love and run
to the kitchen to wash plates, watch television or go
read a book. Know that the time after copulation is to
be used to build the emotional and relational side of
your relationship.
A number of couples take the advantage of going to
bed at the same time, to pray together which is a great
habit to develop. Once in bed together, it gives you
time to talk about your successes in the day, give
thanks to God for what he has done and entreat him
for the day ahead.
One of the most important activity a cohabitating
couple can do to ease their differences, is to go to bed
at the same time. A 2010 study on the effect of sleep
on 29 heterosexual couples, found out that if a man
reported having a good night’s sleep, he would report
less negative interaction the next day. Conversely, the
fewer negative interactions a woman had with a
partner during the day, the better both of their sleep
efficiency would be.
One of the common struggles that married couples
face, is going to bed together and this process can
actually, reinforce good sleeping habits. This in turn,
can have a positive influence when it comes to keeping
reasonable bedtimes. On the other hand, women who
go to bed earlier or later than their partners, reported
lower relationship satisfaction, the study found.
The above is just one big reason going to bed at
the same time makes a difference. A partner’s later or
earlier bedtime can disturb the other especially if he
snores or tosses and turns a lot. This may lead to the
couple sleeping apart. But if couple discusses this, they
could come to a decision together that can be a viable
option.
• COUPLE SLEEPING TOGETHER
When spouses don’t sleep together, they may be
losing on the benefits of a shared sleep schedule, one
of which is touching. Studies have suggested that
physical touch between two humans, releases oxytocin,
the chemical that among other things, helps to promote
and maintain healthy relationship and bonding. Also,
closeness with your partner leads to better sleep. There
is a ‘’suggestive evidence that couple’s emotional
closeness and physical intimacy during the daytime and
prior to bedtime, may promote sleep.’’ Yes, that means
there is a scientific benefit to spooning position.
Note that better sleep means better sex. So having
the same sleeping time table is not all about better
relationship quality, rather it has to do a little with sex
too. Partners who have the same sleep pattern, are
more likely to have regular sex than those who don’t.
This is because, going to bed together gives room for
spontaneous cuddling and touching that can lead to
intercourse.
Sleeping together as a couple, has a number of
health benefits- You tend to fall asleep faster and
deeper when you sleep as a couple. It de-stresses you
and even protects your heart and keep it healthy, as
sleeping with your mate allows your brain to tune out
quickly and you sleep off immediately.
You feel safe and secure when you sleep together;
this in turn affects the quality of your sleep- as it has
been discovered that couples sleep longer when they
sleep together.
Sleeping huddled up together, promotes warmth
which helps you to sleep more deeply than you normally
do.
If you sleep so well and in such comfort, you will
definitely wake up refreshed. Sleeping together ensures
that you are more energetic when you wake up; thus,
you are ready to take on the world, all of which begins
with sleeping with your partner.
Sleeping well and for the right amount, keeps the
heart ticking the right way. There is almost a guarantee
that ensures that your heart is properly relaxed and
ready for another tough day.
There are two dynamics for couples going to bed
together. First, if possible, go to bed at the same time,
avoid going to sleep angry at one another. The more
healthy habits you can cultivate together, the greater the
chance you have in building successful and thriving
union.
Going to bed at the same time might not always be
practicable but you can try to make it a regular
occurrence. This will introduce a new level of intimacy to
your marriage. Habits do not appear, it has to be
cultivated and nurtured.
So, if you desire a strong
and flourishing
relationship, you will have
to develop those habits
that can empower your
marriage to be greater.
And going to bed together
is one of those habits.
Couples who get better
sleep are actually better at
keeping their goals.
Only happily married
partners can sleep
together in peace. This is
a fact! Sleeping together
is healthy for couples.
They become emotionally
close to each other when
they share their bed.
“As a matter of fact, like
many men in my shoes, I
can testify that without
my loving and adorable
wife, friend and
companion life in
government would have
been a very lonely and
difficult journey. But with
her loving support and
constant
encouragement, the task
of governance has been
odds against me. “
Have You Been Getting
Enough Sleep?
zzzzzzzz
Benefits of Sleep
We’ve all been sleep deprived at one time or the
other and know how cranky that can make us feel.
Sleep is undeniably the greatest of healing
therapies and how much you get is most
important to reap its benefits.
If you are in a chronically cranky or neurotic state,
you might not be getting enough shut-eye. It is
important to realize that Sleep is not a waste of
time or a state of inactivity and that it in fact
serves a purpose. A lot of people in the “rat race”
find that they can’t get enough sleep because they
work long hours and have to wake up extra early
to beat the traffic.
It is difficult to get the recommended eight hours
of sleep every night unless you have loads of time,
freedom and paid help. Busy people on the
average, get about 5-6 hours of sleep and this
deprivation can account for a myriad of human
error mishaps such as Road Traffic Accidents and
Life threatening errors in judgment.
Without enough sleep, work performance is
adversely affected. Getting enough sleep could
change you as person as this will definitely put
you in a better mood, with improved mental
clarity that will boost your overall efficiency.
The neurotransmitters (chemicals fired between
nerve cells) responsible for positive feelings like
excitement, confidence and joy are replenished
every night during sleep. This explains why mood
is affected if you are sleep deprived. Mood
declines and depression and stress are on the rise
if you don’t get enough sleep.
Some researchers have found that some mild
psychological disorders may be as a result of the
lack of REM sleep (Dream sleep). It is believed
that during REM sleep that new information is
stored in long term memory and that the brain
creates new neural circuits. During dream sleep,
our most bizarre thoughts can be vented out in
the mind and lack of this type of sleep could lead
to hallucinations, depression and violence.
Children need 10 – 12 hours of sleep in order to
grow to their full potential as growth hormone is
released during sleep. Sleep is very important for
the health of a child too. It promotes memory,
alertness and performance. A sleep deprived child
is more prone to moodiness and behavioural
problems.
People who sleep well are able to keep more ideas
in their heads simultaneously and are able to
think more clearly. Quality of sleep is as important
as duration. Interrupted sleep is not as beneficial
as straight sleep even if they are for the same
periods of time.
The consequences of sleep deprivation in the
healthcare and aviation industries can be
devastating as judgment and mental faculties are
less than intact. Fatigue related decision making
has been responsible for several patient deaths.
REM sleep is responsible for how we think while
non-REM or deep sleep (the first four stages of
sleep) is responsible for how we feel concerning
exhaustion.
Sleep deprivation could lead to metabolic and
hormonal imbalances exposing you to several life
threatening diseases like diabetes, heart disease
and obesity.
The body works hard to regenerate itself
during the night and to repair environmental
damage to the cells. Sleep is very important for
overall health and greatly affects the way your
skin looks.
Tips To Help You Sleep Better:
• Establishing a comforting routine before
bedtime like drinking a glass of warm milk or a
cup a chamomile tea could help
• Avoid Caffeine after 2.00pm
Avoid rigorous exercise for 5 hours before
bedtime
• Avoid heavy meals within 3 hours of your
bedtime
• Read yourself to sleep
• Empty your bladder before you get into bed
• Spray an Aromatic pillow mist such as
Lavender
• If your mattress is uncomfortable you may
end up tossing and turning all night so Getting
the right type of Mattress encourages restful
sleep.
The designer worked for Pierre Balmain, Christian
Givenchy opened his own design
house in Paris. Luxury retail giant
LVMH then acquired the company
in 1989, but Givenchy designed
1995.
Hubert de Givenchy was elected
In 1983 he was named
.After debuting his first
couture collection in 1952,
Givenchy launched a ready-to-wear label just two
years later and then a menswear collection in
1969. The French designer’s work was marked
by its Parisian elegance and sophistication that
saw its impact in the cinema, on the red carpet,
and on the chicest of women.
He was once quoted saying: ‘To dress a woman
is to make her beautiful, in haute couture, we
are cosmetic surgeons, erasing imperfections
and refining the silhouette... for isn’t a couturier
a magician of sorts, who creates illusion and
perhaps beauty itself.
‘Throughout his career, the designer went on to
dress a string of elegant, esteemed women
artistry, social commentary and true-life stories
of inequality and transformation. The stories
are based on real issues affecting the lives of girls
and women across Nigeria while examining what
factors limit their potential for independence,
leadership and meaningful contribution to
development. The show not only gives a voice to
women, it provides the world with insight into
their unique and universal challenges.
