STATEWIDE COLLEGE
GRADUATION HISTORY
On April 7, 2017, HLCOM held its first
Statewide College Graduation. This event
was created to celebrate the achievements
of the Hispanic/Latino college and
university graduates throughout the state
of Michigan. The purpose of this event is
not only to recognize the students, but to
also acknowledge their families, fellow
students, faculty, and administrators who
have helped them achieve this critical
moment in their lives. Graduates from 11
out of the 43 colleges and universities in
the state attended the event: Eastern
Michigan University, Ferris State University,
Grand Rapids Community College, Lake
Michigan College, Lansing Community
College, Michigan State University,
Northern Michigan University, Saginaw
Valley State University, Siena Heights
University, University of Michigan, and
Western Michigan University. 485,972
people identified themselves as Hispanic/Latino
in Michigan in 2015, out of those
people, 169,426 were Hispanic/Latino
students; 133,838 in K-12; 31,569 as
undergrads in a college/university; and
4,019 in graduate or Ph.D. programs. After
going through these figures, we recognized
the importance of celebrating the
academic achievements made by our
community.
