What do you think about bullying? If
it is you who are being bullied, or if
you see others being bullied? These
questions are discussed frequently
these days and students at Charles
Hoffman Elementary got an answer,
“You have the power of one!” What
is this and what did students learn?
On Valentine’s Day, CHE
hosted an Anti-bullying Assembly,
“The Power of One.” This engaging
assembly taught kids: “I will not
bully others, I will not stand by while
others are bullied, I will report and
deal with bullying whenever I see it,
Because I have the Power of One!”
Students signed a pledge posted on
the inside hall, right outside the office
door. Each class or grade is extending
these ideas, by creating skits,
reading books, class discussions, and
writing assignments, etc. We care
about each child and want all students
to feel nurtured and successful.
With Friends on the Mountain?
by Steven Peter
Rim Bowling has an idea for
you. How about bowling your way
to a vacation? There is a league every
other Monday at 7pm called the
“9 No Tap Vacation League” that’s
just the ticket. While the vacation
participation is strictly optional,
it’s just a short 14 weeks getting
to know your fellow social bowlers,
before jetting off for warmer
climates and lots of fun in Puerto
Vallarta, Mexico. The league is just
$15/wk. Vacation arrangements
are made through their
travel agent at a great rate.
If you would like to
just bowl with friends for fun,
this is one way to do it. The
league starts on March 26,
2018 and it will meet every
other week and run through
until the 24th of September.
And if you need that vacation,
you can have five action
packed days of fun from Thursday,
October 11, 2018 until Monday
October 15th. The total league includes
the sweepers, the last week.
Game of Skate: from front page
kind. Not long after, K5 Boardshop
was the first organized amateur
tournament for SKATE. The Game
of SKATE tournament expanded
globally in 2004 and has both professional
and amateur divisions.
The game has now become a worldwide
event.
Rules of the Game
The rules are basic. One player sets
a trick by doing a skateboarding
trick of their choice. If the trick is
not landed, another player attempts
to set a trick. Once a trick has been
set (landed), the other player(s)
must respond by doing the same
trick in their first try. If they make
it the game continues; if they miss
it, they get a letter, starting with S,
cision to personally visit as many
Nazi concentration camps as he
could. His reason? He wanted to
document the camps and their appalling
conditions that had been
rumored about. He anticipated a
time when Nazi atrocities might be
denied, and General Eisenhower
also ordered the filming and photographing
of camps as they were
liberated by the allies. Members
of the U.S. Army Signal Corps recorded
approximately 80,000 feet
of moving film, together with still
photographs.
One of the U.S. prosecutors,
Thomas Dodd, introduced the
film into evidence on the 29th of
November, 1945. When the film
finished, there was a silence in the
room and people realized a new
understanding of what the words
“concentration camp” really meant.
Eisenhower wanted to be in as
many pictures as possible to prove
the death camps really existed. He
was sometimes accompanied by
Generals Bradley and Patton. It has
been said that General Patton refused
to go inside the death camps,
as he stated, “it would make him
too sick.” It didn’t take long for Eisenhower’s
concerns to materialize.
Despite his presence in many photographs,
Holocaust deniers persist
to this day.
One of the most brutal camp
evacuations was the death march
from Auschwitz camp in January
1945 where 15,000 prisoners died
during the death march. On 27 January
1945, Soviet troops from the
100th Infantry Division discovered
Auschwitz 11 days after the
Germans abandoned it, and found
remnants of what had been a terrible
nightmare: 348,820 men’s suits
and 836,515 women’s dresses neatly
folded, pyramids of dentures and
eyeglasses, and seven tons of women’s
hair.
Members of the ‘Greatest
Generation’ who fought during
World War II will never forget the
sights of the war and the horrible
scenes they saw as they marched
to Berlin, Germany. But that was
not as daunting and horrific as what
some of the Russian soldiers saw in
other parts of Eastern Europe.
The phrase “Never Forget”
rings louder today as the world
seems to be going through new
tragedies. So, the need to never go
through something so brutal as the
attempted extermination of a race
of people fits as the worst ‘Crimes
Against Humanity’.
and so on, until they have missed
five tricks, spelling SKATE, and
they are out, or the game is over. No
trick may be set more than once in
the same game and a skater defending
on their last letter may receive
two attempts at that trick.
The last man standing is declared
the winner and if they themselves
did not receive a letter, then
they are said to have “blanked,” or
“skunk’d” their opponent. When
“Skater B” does not have the opportunity
to set a single trick and does
not match a single trick, “Skater A”
is said to have committed a “Perfect
Whitewash.”
This is a kid friendly, free, family
orientated event.
