Welcome to FCAN CONFERENCE 2 018 A message from FCAN Executive Officer Jo Parker Welcome to the FCAN Conference 2018. As another year rolls around we look at the trends, focus on changes, reflect on outcomes and celebrate successes. Heading back into the central location of Sydney CBD, the conference will provide a valuable opportunity for direct engagement with the largest financial counselling membership base in Australia. This year our theme is strong, bold and ambitious – just like our members! EMPOWERING CHANGE FCAN is a progressive and proactive campaigner for the vulnerable and marginalized and follows a holistic approach towards systemic change across all areas of hardship. We do this in three important ways: 1. Advocacy 2. Member training and sector growth 3. Engaging with stakeholders and consultation with communities Our commitment to working with industry, government, regulators, not for profits and other stakeholders has signaled significant changes to the way our stakeholders view Australians doing it tough and resulted in a more collaborative approach to hardship. However, there is still much to do. Breaking the cycle of poverty, domestic violence and economic abuse does not have a silver bullet solution. The apparent lack of resources and funding for the financial couselling sector and the increased demand, places enormous burdens on our limited financial counselling services. “IT IS THROUGH FINANCIAL COUNSELLING THAT FAMILIES AND COMMUNITIES ARE SUPPORTED AND STRENGTHENED.” FCAN recognizes the overarching importance of capacity building in the sector, continued education of financial cournsellors and attracting new members to the fold. It is this trending theme that has resulted in FCAN implementing a new initiative to develop the workforce through scholarships and training subsidies to assist financial counselling agencies to succession plan and grow their workforce. The FCAN Conference will provide industry and other interested partners an opportunity to keep abreast of the latest financial counselling practice developments, sector trends and through a number of informal networking events, an opportunity to strengthen and broaden professional networks. With your support, this event will enable financial counsellors to continue to deliver high quality services to many of your customers experiencing financial hardship, provide a platform for cross-sector engagement and pathways to greater outcomes. About The Conference FCAN is the peak body for financial counsellors in NSW and convenors of the annual conference. As the premier event for financial counsellors in NSW, the 2018 FCAN Conference will bring together financial counsellors, industry, regulators, not for profits and government for the latest news, professional development and networking opportunities over three days.
