is a photograph of submerged rocks that are “emerging” from the sand as it is washed by
the tide back into the Pacific Ocean. The image was taken on a crisp January evening, just
before sunset at Smuggler’s Cove-- a secluded beach in Oregon’s Oswald West State Park,
just north of Manzanita. The final image is the product of seven separate exposures taken
on a tripod at f7.1, ISO 800 and shutter speeds ranging from 1/500 to 1/8 second at one
stop intervals. The seven images were merged and tone mapped using the Photomatix HDR
Software, with some additional refining of th tones and colors in Lightroom CC. Finally, the
image was brought into Photoshop for some local sharpening and spot retouching.
