The biggest
loss as I leave
is leaving the
people of the SC.
The organisation
is here because
of each and
Bon Voyage DCE,
Dato’ Ahmad Fairuz
A
cosy hi-tea gathering was set up at the Teratai
Cafe, to bid farewell to DCE, Dato’ Ahmad
Fairuz Zainol Abidin on 23 March. The hall
was beautifully decorated with a hand drawn doodle
masterpiece of DCE and his favourite activities. A
heartfelt message from Dato’ Fairuz brought everyone
back to reflect on his six years of service with the SC.
Chairman in his speech said, “The DCE position is a
difficult one – it requires a person who is measured
and balanced with the right temperament and has the
insights from all aspects, and Dato’ Fairuz has been
that and a good friend to me.”
To Dato’ Fairuz, it was a pleasure having you at the SC
and we will truly miss you!
Note: Dato’ Fairuz has been appointed a
Judicial Commissioner.
The SC Warriors
Are Back!
By KSRSS
Every Wednesday evening at 6pm, one may not
miss the sight of SC-ians sweating away at the
National Science Centre car park. With the success
of the first edition of SC Warrior Fit Camp, SC Warrior
Fit Camp 2.0 returns.
Fit Camp 2.0 commenced on 17 January with 17
sessions scheduled to end in May. The Fit Camp is a
group exercise class that mixes body weight exercises
with interval training and strength training.
During these sessions, participants are required to run
sprints, push ups, various forms of plyometric and
interval training. Sounds like a lot of hard work, but as
the saying goes – no pain no gain.
Coach Azmir Zed’s training has yielded results as
participants notice weight loss, increase of stamina as
well as fitness level. The Fit Camp sessions successfully
create a supportive and motivational fitness
community among the SC-ians!
Program ini bagus dan sesuai bagi saya yang
tidak berkesempatan atau kurang melakukan
aktiviti senaman kecergasan. Melalui program
ini jurulatih berpengalaman menunjuk ajar cara
melakukan senaman kecergasan yang betul
dan berkesan. Matlamat saya cuma untuk
mengekalkan kecergasan dan kesihatan melalui
aktiviti seumpama ini. Perlu peruntukkan masa
1 jam setiap petang Rabu yang kadang-kadang
terlepas untuk mengikuti program ini merupakan
satu cabaran utama.
Rozlan Yusof,
Internal Audit
The entire experience has been an absolute pleasure!
From the training regime to the support system and
the motivation provided. It has been a wholesome
experience. I can safely say if someone is interested, this is
one of the best and most effective fit camp programmes
out there. My personal target was to reduce my body
weight to an ideal weight based on BMI. Astonishingly, I
lost more than 10kg within a span of six months! As for
challenges, at first, the workout sessions were not easy,
but it improved gradually with the drop in body weight
and increase in fitness level which were some of the more
powerful motivations / boosts.
Chelvakumar Thrujanam,
Prosecution and Civil Enforcement
Having never been very athletic all
my life, signing up for Fit Camp 2.0
was probably one of the scariest 2018
decisions I have ever made – and the
fear only intensified during my first
lesson. Nevertheless, the guidance
and support throughout the course
have transformed the intense fear
into a passionate drive to improve
both physical and mental endurance.
Because if they can do it, why can’t I?
Nikita Razali,
Intermediary & Fund Supervision
I’ve increased my fitness level and really enjoyed the
workout with my colleagues. I am a sportswoman
and have been involved in the MOF Games. It is a
challenge for me to maintain my stamina at this age
and all time. I prefer to workout with my colleagues
rather than alone because they help me to discipline
myself. I would prefer that the session is held twice
instead of once a week. The fee is reasonable. I think
this programme should be continuously organised by
KSRSS. Stay healthy and stay fit!
Traditional art performances
A Journey of Discovery
By Karl Rafiq Nadzarin,
Prosecution and Civil Enforcement
Malaysia, as a nation and an
idea, has been plural and diverse
from her birth. The arrival of
different communities brought
many performing art traditions
to us - Wayang Kulit, Mak
Yong, Teochew Puppetry, Indian
classical dance, tarian Ngajat
Iban, tarian Sumazau, Mah Meri
Jo’oh dance, etc.
Tell us your involvement or interest in
these traditional art forms
I have been a volunteer with Pusaka, a nonprofit
organisation/NGO that promotes traditional
performance art in Malaysia, since 2012. My work
covers a number of areas - photographer, event
facilitator/moderator and assisting in field work where
we engage with traditional art practitioners around
the country.
A discovery of cultural heritage
In this journey with them, I felt compelled to seek my
origins, identity and cultural heritage – to discover
what it means to be a mixed-race Malaysian; to be
human.
This led me to a performance of the ‘Wayang Kulit
Siam’ (or ‘Wayang Kulit Kelantan’) which tells localised
versions of stories from India’s Ramayana with music
influenced by Chinese bronze instruments, and
imbued with a Malay sensibility and understanding
of God and the spirit. All this is manifested through
the ‘Dalang’ (the puppet master) telling the story in
the Kelantanese dialect and surrendering the show
to God’s ultimate will as he reminds us that we are
so very small in the scheme of things. That single
performance with all its diversity was in a way, a
parable about the coming together of our nation. This
shows that we as a nation have embraced difference
for so long - why stop now?
Binding us together, as Malaysians
A challenge I faced with the NGO was how to
convince Malaysians that traditional art is still
relevant? It should be viewed in the context of
nation building – the celebration of different cultures
inherent in Malaysian traditional art can be a binding
force that brings Malaysians together.
There is a great sense of curiosity nowadays about the
roots of our identities and our place in the modern
world, both culturally and nationally. Traditional art
provides a valuable insight into our own histories
– could we return to the days of openness and
understanding of those who are unlike us? It gives me
hope that we’ve seen a growing demand for these
traditional performances from the young as seen from
their high attendance at performances.
Preservation of the art - a family lineage
Knowledge of these traditions is usually passed down
through the family lineage. A ‘guru’ and ‘anak murid’
relationship, where the discipline of the traditional
art form is taught alongside an education involving
philosophy, spirituality and history. Much of the
imparted wisdom would be as useful to mastering
the art as it is to learning how to live. The ‘guru’ is an
elder relative, regarded with the utmost respect in a
community and keeper of traditions and custodian of
stories.
Appreciating these traditional art forms
Reading about traditional performances or just seeing
recordings of them is simply inadequate. The full
and authentic experience could be life-changing.
The ‘Wayang Kulit’, ‘Kuda Kepang’, ‘Mak Yong’ and
others are enchanting, mysterious, and beautiful. Even
without an understanding of its intellectual dimensions,
the viewer is easily captivated and taken away,
often into an otherworldly atmosphere. Traditional
performance as a community activity may or may not
survive the test of time but what a waste it would be
if the important lessons it offers vanish with it.
From this journey, I have learnt that we must awaken
ourselves from our historical slumber to rediscover
our stories – both the personal and shared – so that
we may realise where we come from and figure out
where we should all be going. The story of Malaysia
is not only in our history books. It is also in the songs,
dances, and dramas of our people. May they continue
to sing and may the rest of us continue to listen.
To find out more on the next traditional
performances, check out the Pusaka facebook page
and Seni Pusaka website senipusaka.com.
About these traditional art forms
• The ‘Mak Yong’ is an ancient Malay dancedrama
which combines acting, music
and dancing with courtly gestures and
elaborate costumes. It was once performed
for the Kelantanese Royalty until the
1920s for both entertainment and ritual
purposes and is now recognised as a
masterpiece of world heritage by UNESCO.
• ‘Kuda kepang’ is a ritual dance brought
by the Javanese who migrated to Malaysia
with a significant community in Johor.
2018 in Kuala Lumpur.
This year’s theme “Enhancing the Value of Islamic
Roundtable focused on:
• Role and opportunity of
the Islamic capital market
in leading the agenda,
integrating all its main
constituents including Shariah;
and
• Technical support in terms
of public policy, legal and
regulatory architecture,
