A war museum
that brings
alive nation's
history
DHAKA : It is always a challenge
to educate the new generation
on a nation's rich history
and instill in them the
spirit and pride that they very
well deserve, reports UNB.
Long after Bangladesh came
into being through a ninemonth
bloodbath, a war
museum took upon it to transpire
the less-known national
history of pride to an entire
generation who didn't have a
chance to experience firsthand
the country's War of
Liberation fought in 1971.
The Liberation War
Museum, which has been relocated
to the city's Agargaon
all its dignity and serenity,
keeping its door wide open for
country's culture, heritage and
history, 1971's independence
war as well as events of past
several centuries in our part of
the world. While having a walk
through the passages of the
four magnificent galleries of
this museum, one can go back
to the pages of history, experience
the pain, uncertainty,
sufferings, sacrifices of the
great Liberation War and taste
the birth of a new country
called - Bangladesh.
The journey starts with
Gallery One - where visitors
will start knowing the history
from the pages of the ancient
history of Bengal. Holding the
enter in the time of 13thcentury.
After quickly exploring the
beauty of newly founded capital
Nation observes one-minute blackout
marking Genocide Day
DHAKA :The nation observed a oneminute
blackout on Sunday night commemorating
the brutalities and cowardly attacks
carried out by the Pakistani occupation
forces on the unarmed Bangalees on the
black night of March 25 in 1971, reports UNB
People across the country kept their lights off
for one minute from 9pm. However, the government
did not suspend the power supply.
Emergency services remained out of the
purview of the blackout programme when
additional security measures were in place.
Besides, the nation is observing the
'Genocide Day' in a sombre mood.
The day is being observed officially for the
second time in the country as Parliament
unanimously adopted a resolution on March
11, 2017 to observe March 25 as the Genocide
Day.
On the black night of March 25 in 1971, the
Pakistani military junta resorted to mass
killing in Dhaka to implement their
blueprint to thwart the Awami League's
assumption of office following the election
mandate of 1970.
In the attack dubbed 'Operation
Searchlight', the Pakistani forces mercilessly
killed the Bangalee members of the East
Pakistan Rifles and police, students, teachers
and common people.
They killed people indiscriminately, set fire
to houses and properties, and looted business
establishments, leaving a trail of
destruction.
BNP slams 'failure' to have
int'l recognition for Mar 25
as Genocide Day
DHAKA : BNP senior leader Khandaker
Mosharraf Hossain on Sunday alleged that
Awami League has failed to have the international
recognition for March 25 as
Genocide Day, reports UNB.
"The West Pakistanis carried out the worst
from of genocide on the Bangalees on the
black night of March 25, 1971. But it's a matter
of regret that those who're now in power
and consider themselves as the only liberation
force have failed to get its international
recognition as genocide, even 47 years after
the country's independence," he said.
The BNP leader came up with the comment
while speaking at a discussion
arranged by Swadhinata Forum, a pro-BNP
platform, at the Jatiya Press Club, marking
the Independence Day.
The nation is observing the 'Genocide Day'
in a somber mood today (Sunday), commemorating
the brutalities and cowardly
attacks carried out by the Pakistani occupation
forces on the unarmed Bangalees on the
night of March 25, 1971.
Referring to a German-based institution's
recent study report, Mosharraf, a BNP
standing committee member, deplored that
the government earned a shameful international
recognition that Bangladesh is now
one of the five new countries which have
been under an autocratic rule.
He said now there is no reason for considering
Bangladesh as a democratic country
after the way the current regime forced a
Chief Justice to quit, destroyed the country's
three basic pillars, democracy and snatched
people's rights of association and expression.
Criticising the government for repeatedly
denying BNP to hold a rally at Suhrawardy
Udyan, Mosharraf said it allowed autocratic
ruler Ershad to hold the similar programme
at the same venue on a day he had annihilated
democracy.
Shilpakala Academy organized an exhibition titled '71 Barbarota' at its premises yesterday. Students
lit candles at the time.
