TEST DRIVE TO THE FUTURE
Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne gave Canadians a glimpse of cleaner
driving days ahead when she took a Toyota Mirai for a spin around Queen’s Park.
The Mirai is Toyota’s first mass-produced hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicle. It uses
no gasoline, and with water vapour as its only byproduct, it’s a clean, efficient and fun
way to get around. A five-minute hydrogen refill gives it about 500 km in range.
“Ontario and Toyota share a common goal to reduce greenhouse gas emissions
from cars and trucks,” said Stephen Beatty, Vice-President, Toyota Canada.
The Mirai joins a broad range of Toyota advanced technology systems and vehicles
— including Canadian-built hybrids — that are delivering clean energy benefits with
performance and style.

Towards Tomorrow by Toyota brand galleries
popped up to entertain and inform shoppers at
locations in Quebec, Ontario and British Columbia.
Interactive and immersive, the galleries
encourage visitors to have fun and get to know
Toyota up-close in a playful, hands-on way.
They are built into existing store locations at
select malls. While they have a permanent feel, they
pop up for limited-run engagements.
Visitors get the chance to experience advanced
safety technologies using a virtual reality system.
They can also use their own hands in a threedimensional
world to explore a variety of
Toyota vehicles.
There is video content, a learning gallery,
a Kidz Zone, a secure cell phone charging
tower, and more.
The brand galleries create a valuable
middle step between online research and
dealership visits for vehicle shoppers, said

CANADIAN DREAMERS WANTED
The Toyota Dream Art Contest aims to inspire creativity
among young Canadians, encourage an interest in cars, and
reinforce the importance of having a dream.
Canadian youth up to 15 years of age, are encouraged to
submit their artistic creations depicting a “dream car.” The
entrants will have a chance to win great prizes, including an
entry into a global contest, in which 30 finalists from around
the world win a trip to Japan for the final awards ceremony.
Last year, two young Canadian artists scored bronze at the
Toyota global awards in Japan.

SMALL TALK WITH FEELING
Cute, cuddly and compact, the Kirobo Mini just wants to
be friends. The miniature “communication partner” is designed
to provide companionship by engaging in casual conversation
with its owner.
It will be sold through Toyota dealerships in Japan in 2017,
and currently speaks Japanese only.
The little robot moves its head, blinks, uses hand gestures
and responds to human emotion. Small enough to fit into
the palm of your hand, it can go almost anywhere — and it
remembers where it has been.
It’s all made possible by connecting the Kirobo Mini via
Bluetooth to smartphones installed with a dedicated app.
A built-in camera enables the Kirobo Mini to recognize facial
expressions and adjust its communication content and
style accordingly.
It uses connected services to get information from the home
and vehicle to provide pertinent and companionable comments
such as “That was a long drive” and “Welcome home!”.
The Kirobo Mini is part of the Toyota Heart Project,
which aims to develop a distinctly human-like interaction
between people and machines. It’s based on the concept of
“Inspiring the Heart, Inspiring You” which is something that
Toyota applies on a daily basis to automobile manufacturing
and more.

RISKY THINKING ABOUT
AUTOMATED VEHICLES
Misconceptions about automated vehicles and
over-confidence in their technologies are cause
for alarm, according to the Traffic Injury Research
Foundation and the Toyota Canada Foundation.
The two groups partnered on a survey of more than
2,600 Canadians, exploring what they know about semiand
fully-automated vehicles, and what they think about
them. It seems that they don’t know nearly enough.
Almost one in six believe they would not have to be
an attentive driver or have to take unexpected control
of a semi-automated vehicle. Nearly a quarter say they
would drive one when tired or fatigued and 17 per cent
would engage in a non-driving activity like texting or
reading. Ten per cent would sleep or nap behind the wheel,
with nine per cent saying they would drink and drive.
While advanced active safety technology is meant to
enhance a driver’s control of a vehicle, it doesn’t replace
a knowledgeable and attentive driver, said Stephen Beatty,
Vice-President, Toyota Canada.
“This study tells us that we, as an industry, have lots of
work to do when it comes to educating drivers about the
capabilities and limitations of the technology,” he said.
The study also shed light on other key issues that
the advent of automated vehicles will bring, such as
insurance costs, collision liability and fault, and ethical
decision-making concerns that will shape the way
automated vehicles respond in an unavoidable collision.
TOYOTA HYBRIDS REACH 10 MILLION MARK
Since 2000, Canadians have purchased more than 130,000
Toyota hybrid vehicles, helping to push Toyota’s cumulative global
hybrid vehicles sales to more than 10 million vehicles.
Toyota sells 34 different hybrid models in more than 90 countries.
Last year was also a record setter for hybrid sales in Canada with
19,787 Toyota hybrids sold.
These tremendous sales numbers help prove the staying power
of this technology that has become part of a broader solution
to help reduce greenhouse gas emissions and other pollutants.
“When we launched Prius, no one even knew what
a hybrid was. Those who drove it were called geeks
or other names. Today, thanks to those early
adopters who gave Prius a chance, hybrids
have grown in popularity, and have ridden a
wave of success out of the unknown and into
the mainstream,” said Takeshi Uchiyamada,

Alberta family turns to Toyota for safe, reliable and versatile mobility

Ary De Moor’s love affair
with Toyota began with
a 1990 Camry.
The 65-year-old, who
works for an independent school
association in Edmonton, Alta., says he
purchased his first Toyota from
a widow at his church.
Since then, Ary has expanded
his Toyota family to include a 1999
Highlander, a 2003 RAV4, a 2005
RAV4, and a 2012 Highlander.
His wife Sharon prefers Corollas,
while his brother Bob and wife Margo
say they are big fans of their 2015
Highlander, which pulls their trailer
on cross-country camping trips.
Ary has also passed on his love of
Toyota vehicles to his son Jonathan
and daughter Jessica Mbaiseku, who
purchased his RAV4s. Both vehicles
have clocked more than 200,000 kms
and continue to operate smoothly,
with only minor work and regular
maintenance needed.
What makes Ary and his family
such loyal Toyota customers?
Ary is an avid reader of industry
magazines that rate vehicles, and
finds that Toyotas fare very well
for reliability. He adds there’s also
a Toyota out there to suit every need
and every price point. “If you can
find a reliable car that costs very
little, that’s great.”
SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE
While Ary has owned a range of Toyota
vehicles, it’s the Highlander he keeps
returning to.
Ary’s Highlander has been taking
him safely to work in treacherous
winter conditions and also on long
trips to Calgary and Jasper on
camping expeditions. “It’s extremely
stable on the road, especially in winter
conditions,” he says.
That’s also why Jonathan likes his
2005 RAV4, which he purchased from
his father in 2014.
ADVENTURE AWAITS
While the father of two spends roughly 45 minutes
commuting from Edmonton to Elk Island Park,
where he works as a biologist for Parks Canada, he
spends much of his free time camping. He said his
RAV4 can take him pretty much anywhere.
Jonathan recalls one Christmas when he took
the RAV4 on a grueling 16-hour drive to Vancouver
through the mountains. The vehicle handled tough
winter conditions like a pro, he said, and added it
was comfortable.
It’s also the perfect car for family getaways — it can
fit his dogs, children and camping gear.
“It’s not too big, not too small,” says Jonathan.
Though Jonathan has his eye on a Tacoma for
off-road driving, the RAV4 “has been a good choice
for daily use.”
Jessica Mbaiseku’s 2003 RAV4 has helped her
connect with her family. It has been to Washington,
all the way to Michigan, where her sister lives, and
on frequent trips to Jasper. “It probably knows the
way to Jasper on its own,” she jokes.
The nurse and mother of two was looking for a
vehicle simply to get to and from work, and decided
to purchase the RAV4 from her father.

But her RAV4 ended up being much
more meaningful — it served as the backdrop
for her wedding announcement photos.
Mbaiseku says the vehicle was her biggest
material possession at the time of her wedding.
“All of our stuff was in the car,” says Mbaiseku.
A SAFE BET
For most of the family members, it’s
Toyota’s award-winning safety performance
that has them sold.
In 2010, Ary’s wife Sharon was involved
in a serious accident in her 2003 Corolla,
but managed to walk away from the
incident unscathed.
Ary was told the frame on both sides of
the passenger door was bent, which meant
the steel bar in the passenger door had
taken all of the impact. Having seen that
first hand, Ary said he immediately went
out and purchased another Corolla. “I saw
what it did with my own eyes and saw why
the design was superior,” says Ary.
As for Bob, it was his first Toyota, a 2001
Corolla, which saved him in an accident in
2012. A truck had been driving too quickly
in snowy conditions and rammed into the
back end of his vehicle. Though his vehicle
was damaged beyond repair, it had kept
him protected.
“It was a gutsy car. It just drove very
well,” says Bob, who replaced his Corolla
with a 2013 model. He’s still driving it.
FROM ONE GENERATION
TO THE NEXT
Ary’s Highlander has about 78,000 km on
it, and he plans on keeping it.
“I’m still in my honeymoon phase
with my Highlander. I still like it and
I hope I will drive it for many more
years,” he says.
Mbaiseku echoes his sentiments. What
she likes most about Toyota vehicles is
their reliability.
She keeps her thirteen-year-old RAV4
in shipshape condition through regular
maintenance at her local Toyota dealership
in Edmonton, Alta.
“We’re hoping we can drive our
RAV4 for a really long time and that
our kids will learn how to drive in it,”
says Mbaiseku.
The family’s loyalty to Toyota continues
to be passed on. Ary announced his
oldest grandchild Abdoul, who lives
in Michigan, has just bought his first
Toyota — a used Camry.
“How do I feel about passing Toyotas
along to different generations? In one
word, great,” says Ary. “Any father who
sells two of his used cars to two of his
children had better trust what he’s selling
them. It’s a confirmation of the quality of
[Toyota’s] product, new or used, that can
be trusted by now, three generations of
my family.”

Remember your childhood road trips?
Your essentials probably included
a music player with foam-tipped
headphones, a notebook and pencil
case, a couple of books and a pillow. You whiled
away the hours staring out the window, fighting
with your siblings and counting the minutes
until you got to your destination.
Today’s road trip has a different vibe:
smartphones, tablets, gaming devices, laptops
and other screens ensure each passenger has
their own zone of private entertainment.
There might be fewer skirmishes in the
backseat, but one could argue that modern
travel is lacking a connection to the world
outside the car — and the loved ones inside it.
This summer, drive back in time with an oldfashioned
road trip that puts family time over
screen time. Here are some family-tested tips for
keeping the peace in the backseat and kicking off
your summer vacation on a high note.
FOOD AND EXERCISE
Kids and adults alike are naturally testier
when their blood sugar is low. Fill a cooler
with healthy snacks like raw veggies, cheese
and crackers and homemade muffins — and
keep them coming so no one has a chance
to get “hangry.”
Save sugary treats, including juices, until
about 30 minutes before you make a pit stop.
Then look for playgrounds or green spaces and
give everyone time to burn off some energy.
This will extend the road trip, but discovering
play equipment is an adventure most kids will
remember fondly. Make it even more memorable
by having a family game of catch, tag or “Mother,
May I?” before piling back into the car.
GAMES
Classic car-friendly games that require nothing
more than an imagination include:
• Cycling through the alphabet naming
things like animals, food or cities;
• Telling a story, word by word, with each
person contributing in turn;
• Guessing which noun a person is thinking
of in 21 questions (e.g. giraffe, banana,
spaceship, lamp);
• Starting with “I’m going on a picnic…
and I’m bringing an apple,” each
person adds one more thing to the
picnic basket while listing all the
previous ones.
For more hands-on fun, bring along a collection of travel-size magnetic
games like checkers, tic-tac-toe and Snakes and Ladders. If you’re driving
on long stretches of flat roads, backseat passengers could even play card
games like Old Maid, Crazy Eights and Go Fish.
No matter what the passengers decide to play, take care not to distract
the driver, who should have eyes on the road at all times!
MYSTERY PACKAGES
It never fails. At home, you help your child fill a bag with activities
and books for the ride — only to have them dump it out in the first five
minutes and declare it all boring.
This year, consider meting out their activities one by one. Number
paper lunch bags and drop in a car-friendly treat to each bag — it might be
something new or a toy from home they didn’t know was along for the ride.
At an interval of your choice (hourly, daily), ask them to pick a number
and hand over the corresponding bag for a fresh new activity. Ideas include:
• Travel games
• Comic/picture book or graphic novels
• Small dolls or vehicles
• A souvenir from the previous day’s travel
• Lollipop or gum
• Stuffed animals from home
• Notebook and crayons/markers
Be sure none of the items are sharp, heavy or could cause injury if the
car needs to come to a sudden stop.
MUSIC
Every road trip needs a soundtrack! Curate a special road trip playlist
with something for everyone. Not only will you enjoy it on your travels,
but hearing the songs later will instantly bring back memories of
your trip.
Choose a selection of everyone’s favourites and include a wide variety from
a bunch of genres, such as oldies, pop, jazz, country, folk and rock. Bonus
points for choosing songs that tie in with your journey and destination.
AUDIO BOOKS/PODCASTS
Have you been meaning to read a classic children’s story with your kids?
Let an audio book do it for you! A road trip is the perfect time for the
whole family to enjoy classics and newer titles. Storytelling podcasts are
also a great way to enjoy quiet time.
TECHNOLOGY TIME
If you fear banning electronics will incite a mutiny in the backseat, carve
out designated technology time. When played in moderation, kids enjoy
video games and movies more. Plus, they’ll be more likely to put them
aside when they know they’ll have time to plug in later.
It may not be the road trip you remember from your childhood, but
a low-tech adventure might just be the best of both worlds to stay sane
and create memories everyone can celebrate.

For 2018, the best-selling midsize sedan
in Canada is completely remade into
its eighth generation. Along with
exciting new styling, you can expect
outstanding driving dynamics along with
impressive fuel economy.
The Camry starts with the Toyota New
Global Architecture (TNGA), an entirely new
way for the company to design, engineer,
and create its vehicles. Longer, lower, and
wider than its predecessor — the new Camry
incorporates a lower centre of gravity and
wider stance that increases stability, especially
on curves or when changing lanes.
Improved seating positions for all occupants
improves comfort, while the lowered beltline
and dash, along with the repositioned A-pillars
and mirrors, provide the driver with more
visibility all around.
Along with its new platform, the 2018 Camry
offers three new powertrains. The new 3.5-litre V6
includes direct gasoline injection for performance
and fuel economy, while the all-new 2.5-litre fourcylinder
engine comes with Camry’s first eightspeed
Direct-Shift automatic transmission.
The four-cylinder achieves impressive
power and torque thanks to technologies such
as rapid combustion, high compression ratio,
direct fuel injection, variable cooling system,
and the latest version of Toyota’s variable
valve timing.
The third option will be the Camry
Hybrid, mating the new 2.5-litre to the latest
generation of the Toyota Hybrid System
(THS II). The battery pack moves from the
trunk to below the rear seat for better balance
and handling.
The sleek new exterior styling emphasizes
Toyota’s “Keen Look” design philosophy, with
a two-piece grille, curvaceous hood, and smooth
character lines that flow between the front and
rear fenders to tie everything together.
At the rear, the C-pillars reflect light from all
angles, while a crease running from the slim
taillights to the bumper gives the confident,
well-planted look of a premium sports sedan.
Inside, passengers enjoy roominess and
comfort, while the driver sits in a cockpit-style
environment, with gauges and controls angled
toward the seat for optimal visibility and ease
of use.
The most visually striking feature is a sweeping,
sculpted line from the instrument cluster that
bisects the waterfall-style centre console, perfectly
framing an infotainment and climate control
centre that’s both high-tech and easy to use.
The Camry will also include Toyota Safety
Sense P (TSS-P), a multi-feature advanced
active safety suite of cutting edge active safety
technologies.
The 2018 Camry will also mark the Canadian
debut of Toyota Entune — a bundle of connected
vehicle technologies designed for convenience
and peace of mind.

2018 Toyota C-HR.
The C-HR stands for Compact High-Rider and it
marks a milestone in the company’s history.
The 2018 Toyota C-HR’s 2.0-litre engine includes many of
Toyota’s newest technologies, including Variable Valve Timing
and Valvematic, which improve fuel efficiency and reduce
emissions while ensuring smooth engine operation.
All C-HR trim levels also include Toyota Safety

sets a new standard in a compact vehicle

the practicality of a crossover. It’s perfect for
urban environments, but it’s also built for
sheer enjoyment on open, winding roads.
The production Toyota C-HR made
its Canadian debut at the 2017 Montréal
International Auto Show. It closely follows
the original concept vehicle’s styling, and is
unlike any Toyota you’ve seen before. The
edgy, muscular styling projects the car’s
driving dynamics, but it also leads the way
to the luxury you’ll find inside the cabin.
URBAN RIDER
The design starts with a prominent Toyota
badge that’s flanked by twin projectorbeam
halogen headlights and LED daytime
running lights. These wrap around the front
edges of the car, providing excellent lighting
and visibility while creating an assertive face
and the impression of a much wider vehicle.
But don’t let that fool you: the C-HR’s
compact footprint makes it perfect for
crowded city streets and tight spaces.
At the rear, the C-HR’s taillights protrude
outward, also providing visibility from the
side as well as from the rear. Meanwhile, the
rear hatch tapers in to continue the wide
appearance, and includes a lip spoiler and
a functional top wing that increases the
driving dynamics — not just when you’re
having fun with it, but for that essential,
firmly-planted feel at highway speeds.
Although the C-HR looks like a two-door
coupe, passengers can enjoy the convenience
of its two rear doors for easy entry and exit.
The car’s sharp, side character lines follow
the windows and curve up to a distinctive
C-pillar that cleverly integrates the rear door
handles for a smooth appearance.
The C-HR’s side profile culminates in
muscular wheel arches stretched over
distinctively-styled 17- or 18-inch alloy wheels.

styling continues with interior accents that
set the C-HR’s cabin apart. It’s spacious and
uncluttered, with a driver-friendly approach
that puts everything within easy reach

reminiscent of a tablet, is set atop the dash to

Toyota Safety Sense can help drivers arrive safely

We use our vehicles for many
things, from daily school runs,
work commutes and shopping
errands to weekend cottage
treks and extended cross-country vacations
— plus everything in between. Whatever their
purpose, all those trips have one common
objective: a safe arrival.
That’s why Toyota created Toyota Safety
Sense. Along with environmental responsibility,
safety is imprinted in Toyota’s DNA and the
company believes that safety is for everyone.
Opting for safety is a choice people shouldn’t
have to make. Which is why Toyota is making
this advanced suite of safety features standard
on almost all new models by the end of 2017 —
the first and only automaker to do so.
Toyota Safety Sense is the result of a longterm
research and development process by
Toyota on its path toward its ultimate goal of
zero traffic injuries and fatalities. While Toyota
Safety Sense encompasses a range of different
technologies, each with specific functions, they
all have a single purpose: to support the driver.
Everything is done to help the driver
recognize potentially dangerous situations and
to address them appropriately and effectively.
In effect, it’s like a co-pilot that can support
the driver’s own awareness, decision-making
process and vehicle operation over a broad
range of speeds and a variety of driving
conditions and scenarios. But it’s the driver,
not the vehicle, that is in control at all times.
TWO VERSIONS OF TOYOTA
SAFETY SENSE
Toyota Safety Sense comprises multiple active
safety features integrated into two distinct
packages: Toyota Safety Sense C (TSS-C)
in some vehicles and Toyota Safety Sense P
(TSS-P) in others.
Their combined features help address three
key areas of crash prevention and protection:
mitigating or preventing frontal collisions,
helping to keep drivers within their lane, and
enhancing road safety during nighttime driving.
Common features for both systems include
Toyota’s Pre-Collision System (PCS), Lane
Departure Alert (LDA) and Automatic High
Beams (AHB).
PRE-COLLISION SYSTEM
PCS addresses the most common type of
crash experienced in Canada — the rear-end
collision (sometimes called a frontal collision).
According to the 2015 Allstate Canada Safe
Driving Study, such crashes accounted for
more than one-quarter of all vehicle collisions
for its customers.
PCS uses an in-vehicle camera and laser
(TSS-C) or milliwave radar (TSS-P) to help
detect a vehicle ahead. If the driver's vehicle
speed is greater than 10 km/h and the system
determines a high possibility of collision with
the vehicle ahead, TSS prompts the driver to
take evasive action and brake, using an audio
and visual alert. The closing distance at which
the alert activates can be adjusted by the driver.
DRIVERS STILL IN CONTROL
If the driver applies the brakes, Brake Assist
may be activated to help increase the braking
force. If the driver does not apply the brakes
within a preset time and the potential for
collision becomes extremely high, the system
may automatically apply the brakes to help
reduce the impact or, in some cases, avoid
the collision.
Auto braking may occur at speeds between
10 and 80 km/h with TSS-C and between 10
and 180 km/h with TSS-P, and it may reduce
vehicle speed by up to 30 km/h (TSS-C) and
40 km/h (TSS-P).
It is important to understand, however, that
PCS is designed only to assist, not replace
driver control. It cannot guarantee bringing
a vehicle to a complete stop at higher speeds,
but it may slow the vehicle and mitigate the
severity of a collision. Also it is not operational
at speeds below 10 km/h.
With TSS-P, the system uses an in-vehicle
camera and front-grille-mounted, millimetrewave
radar to help detect a potential pedestrian
in front of the vehicle. When travelling at
speeds between 10km/h and 80 km/h, the
system is designed to respond to a potential
collision with a pedestrian the same way as
a collision with a car.
A pedestrian may not always be detected.
Their detection depends on conditions
such as speed, road conditions, driver input,
surrounding brightness and the motion,
posture, size and angle of the pedestrian.
DYNAMIC RADAR CRUISE CONTROL
On TSS-P only, the system includes Dynamic
Radar Cruise Control (DRCC), which works like
conventional cruise control but also detects
the speed and distance of a vehicle ahead and
automatically adjusts speed to maintain a
preset distance behind, thus helping reduce
the demands on the driver.
Intended for highway use only, it can be set
at speeds greater than 50 km/h and disengages
when the vehicle’s speed drops below 40 km/h.
It is not for use and is not functional in stopand-go
traffic and it can be over-ridden by the
driver at any time.
Some models are equipped with Full Speed
Dynamic Radar Cruise Control, which also
operates at speeds below 40 km/h. The system
is designed to speed up and slow down the
vehicle to match the speed of the one directly
ahead, and to bring the vehicle to a full stop if
that vehicle in front comes to a stop while the
system is engaged.
LANE DEPARTURE ALERT
Both Toyota Safety Sense systems include
the Lane Departure Alert (LDA) function,
which is designed to notify a driver if they
unintentionally deviate from the driving lane.
Using an in-vehicle camera to detect
visible white or yellow lane markings, the
system senses when the vehicle begins to
deviate unintentionally from the marked lane
and provides visible and audible warnings
to the driver.
Those alerts are a signal for the driver to
check the surrounding road situation and
carefully move the steering wheel to bring the
vehicle back to the centre part of the lane.
In addition to the alert functions of LDA, in
vehicles equipped with TSS-P and Electronic
Power Steering (EPS), the system also features
OVERVIEW
Toyota Safety Sense TM systems are designed to assist drivers in
identifying and responding to potentially dangerous situations,
helping to avoid or mitigate the severity of a potential crash.
They are integrated to provide seamless operation, offering
support only to the extent necessary for each driver and situation
— not to replace or interfere with appropriate driver action.
It is important to note that the operation of these systems may
be affected by weather and environmental conditions and that
they are not substitutes for driver attention and control.
a Steering Assist function (LDA w/SA). When
that system is enabled and it determines that
the vehicle is about to depart from its lane
unintentionally, it may briefly provide small
corrective steering inputs to the steering wheel
to help keep the vehicle in its lane. The driver
can always override the system.
LDA is designed to function at speeds of
approximately 50 km/h or higher on relatively
straight roadways. It is not a collisionavoidance
system nor is it a substitute for safe
and attentive driving. Its effectiveness may be
limited by road and weather conditions, such
as snow and ice that may impede the visibility
of lane markings.
AUTOMATIC HIGH BEAMS (AHB)
Both TSS-C and TSS-P feature Automatic High
Beams (AHB) — a safety system designed
to help drivers see more of what's ahead at
nighttime without dazzling other drivers.
When enabled, AHB uses an in-vehicle
camera to help detect the headlights of
oncoming vehicles and taillights of vehicles
ahead, then automatically switches between
high and low beams to provide the most light
possible for the circumstances.
By using high beams more frequently,
the system may help enable earlier detection
of pedestrians, obstacles, road signs and
other objects.
It is designed to function at speeds of
approximately 34 km/h or higher and it can
be disabled if the driver chooses. Because
the system is triggered by light stimulus, its
effectiveness may be limited by external factors
such as weather conditions, a dirty windshield,
lighting conditions or hilly terrain.

When the Prius gasoline-electric
hybrid first arrived in Canada in
2000, one of the most common
questions people asked was,
“Do you have to plug it in?”
You didn’t, of course, but for 2012, Toyota
introduced the Prius Plug-In, which combined
the convenience of a hybrid with the fuel-free
operation of an electric vehicle.
And now there’s an all-new version, the 2017
Prius Prime plug-in hybrid.
Far more than just a name change, the Prius
Prime is one of the most technologicallyadvanced
vehicles in Toyota’s history.
When the Prius Prime is fully charged,
drivers enjoy up to 35 kilometres of electriconly
driving.
That’s enough for many Canadians to do
a day of in-town driving without using any
gasoline at all. When the stored charge runs out,
the Prius Prime automatically reverts to regular
gasoline-electric hybrid operation, self-charging
its hybrid battery using regenerative braking.
Compared with an all-electric car, the Prius
Prime takes much less time to charge, and
it doesn’t require owners to buy and install
a home charging station.
Most importantly, when the stored charge
depletes, the Prius Prime continues to run.

Prime can travel more than 1030 kilometres,
and with an estimated efficiency equivalent

The Prius Prime uses a new Hybrid Synergy
Drive, developed specifically for it, which uses
Toyota’s first-ever dual-motor generator drive
system for improved acceleration.
Its new Atkinson-cycle four-cylinder gasoline
engine achieves an incredible thermal efficiency
of more than 40 per cent, and it’s mated to an
automatic, continuously variable transmission
(CVT) that always keeps it in the “sweet spot”
for optimal driving performance and fuel economy.
But not all of the Prius Prime’s advances
are under the hood. At its core is the Toyota
New Global Architecture (TNGA) platform,
introduced on the all-new, fourth-generation
2016 Prius.
This stiffer chassis transmits less road noise
and vibration to the cabin, while its lower
centre of gravity improves handling and gives
the vehicle a confident, well-planted feel. The
new design also allowed Toyota’s designers
to lower the front cowl, which provides better
forward vision as well as a sportier appearance.
Overall, the Prius Prime is longer, lower, and
wider than its Prius Plug-In predecessor.
Toyota has always been ahead of the
curve with its environmental initiatives:
the original Prius was the world’s first-ever
mass-produced hybrid vehicle. In addition to
hybrids and plug-in hybrids, the company has
also introduced the hydrogen-powered Toyota
Mirai fuel cell electric vehicle, the culmination
of 20 years of in-house engineering on
hydrogen fuel cell manufacturing and design.
That puts the company squarely in line
with the increasing initiatives by federal and
provincial governments on environmental
issues and greenhouse gases reduction.
These include available plug-in vehicle
rebates, vehicle charging infrastructure, and
requirements that automakers offer a minimum
number of zero-emission vehicles alongside
their conventional models.
Even so, it isn’t enough for a vehicle just
to be environmentally-friendly. It also has to
be practical, comfortable, affordable, and fun
to drive, and the new Prius Prime checks all
those boxes.
It seats four people in roomy comfort, its
quiet cabin is handsomely designed with
premium materials, and its split-folding rear
seat easily increases its cargo capacity.
It comes in two trim levels, both including
standard automatic climate control, heated
steering wheel, display audio system with SIRI
Eyes Free control, navigation, and Smart Key
System with pushbutton start.
Also available are head-up display, intelligent
parking assist, rain-sensing wipers, blind spot
monitoring system with cross-traffic alert,
leather seating, and Qi wireless charging.
Both models also include an extensive list of
standard safety technologies, including Toyota
Safety Sense P with lane departure alert,
pre-collision system with pedestrian detection,
automatic high-beam headlamps, and dynamic

All of this is wrapped in eye-catching
styling that’s like nothing else on the road. And
you still don’t have to plug in the Prius Prime
if it’s not convenient, and that’s the beauty of it:

distance to the Granville St. strip and

ADVENTURE AWAITS
Shake off the sights and sounds of the inner
city by pumping up the tunes and picking up
speed on the way to Vancouver’s North Shore.
Amp up your adrenaline with some adventure
at the Capilano Suspension Bridge.
You can follow the footsteps of millions of
others and pick your way across the 137 metre
bridge suspended 70 metres over the Capilano
River — or you can take it up a notch and try
Cliffwalk, a cantilevered walkway that hugs a
granite cliff over the Capilano Canyon. You
can also suit up for a Treetops Adventure: a
canopy-walk of seven small suspension bridges
anchored among the towering Douglas firs.
Canada’s largest city positively throbs
with excitement in the summer. The C-HR
could barely narrow down its favourite
destinations, but it managed to select a
few that capture the spirit of its trendy and
curious drivers. Ride along!
AWESOME NEIGHBOURHOODS
Vogue magazine wasn’t wrong when it
named Queen St. W. one of the 15 coolest
streets in the world.
The strip can thank its “indie patisseries,
homegrown labels and hidden-from-view
galleries — hallmarks of hipness, if they ever
existed,” for its designation, according to Vogue’s
Nick Remsen. (FYI: two of those hidden galleries
are Twist Gallery, 1100 Queen St. W. and Birch
Contemporary, 129 Tecumseh Ave.)
What he doesn’t mention is that Queen
St. W. is infinitely fun to drive on a summer
afternoon with the windows down. Take in
the energy of the one-of-a-kind businesses
and people with a slow crawl behind a
streetcar. Start your engine at Queen St. W./
University Ave. and cruise west to Bathurst
St. Later, refuel at The Drake Hotel’s (1150
Queen St. W.) rooftop Sky Yard or head down
to the Drake Underground for indie music.
ACT LIKE A KID AGAIN
Toronto is crawling with unique experiences
tucked away into obscure locations that you
have to know about to get to. Pursuit OCR
(444 Dufferin St.) is one of them — and it’s
totally worth the Internet search.
The first fully indoor obstacle course
training centre in the country, this 10,000 sq.
ft. space is literally a playground for adults.
We’re talking tire swings, rope walls,
extreme monkey bars and an enormous ball
pit. (Did we mention this is for adults?)
If you’re feeling pumped up, you can
take one of several fitness classes running
throughout the day. Or just charge your way
around the obstacle course like you’re eight
years old and owning the playground.
OUTRÉ THEATRE
If you pride yourself on being one step ahead
of the curve, you don’t want to miss the
beloved indie theatre Fringe Festival July 5-16.
Here’s where you’ll see the freakiest,
funniest, oddest theatre, dance, visual art and
busking shows put on by new, upcoming and
seasoned artists testing out new work.
Part of the appeal is never truly knowing
what you’re going to get.
Small shows that went on to national and
international success have debuted at this arty
little festival, including Kim’s Convenience
and ‘da Kink in My Hair. It’s a favourite of
the C-HR because shows are staged at weird
nooks and crannies across the city, allowing
ample time for fun summer neighbourhood

FORESTA LUMINA
Montreal has hundreds of nightclubs designed
to satisfy every taste, but a magical alternative is
to drive out of the city just as the sun is setting.
Foresta Lumina (135 rue Michaud, Coaticook,
QC) is an award-winning, illuminated pathway
you can walk that’ll make you feel like you’re in
a fairy tale. The 2 km multimedia trail winds through
seven illuminated zones deep in the heart of a
provincial park. You’ll stop by areas like the Wish
Bank and the Enchanted Riverbank, breathing in
otherworldly experiences along the way.
Just like the C-HR, Montrealers play as hard as
they work. Arts, culture, whimsy and shameless
fun are part of every summer in this metropolitan
hotspot. The C-HR is already revving its engine.
MILE EX IS THE NEW MILE END?
Where better to get your bearings in Montreal
than in the vigorous Mile End neighbourhood,
which has been described as the “hipster
capital of Canada.”
Young, creative urbanites flock here for its
arts and music scene (fun fact: Arcade Fire got
their start here), congregating in the numerous
art studios, cafés and bars.
The Casa del Popolo (4873 St. Laurent Blvd.)
might be considered the neighbourhood’s
ground zero since their self-identity sums up
the ethos of the area: “part fair-trade café, part
music venue, part resto-bar and part art gallery.”
But don’t get too comfortable in Mile End:
many hipsters are on the move to Mile-Ex, a
more affordable neighbouring district perched
on the edge of the Jean-Talon food market
(7070 Avenue Henri-Julien) — which is also
well worth eating your way through.
Mile-Ex might be a little grittier, but that
just adds to its youthful charm. Old factories
play host to artists and collectives and shared
spaces are the norm for eclectic businesses.
Restaurant Mile-Ex (6631 rue Jeanne-Mance)
is a must, as is the Alexandraplatz, (6731
de l’Esplanade) an old brewing factory that
transforms into one of Montreal’s coolest bars
every summer.
THE BEACHCLUB
If you’re into electronic music, you’ll want to
make a pilgrimage to North America’s biggest
outdoor complex (aka millennial party central)
this summer.
The Beachclub (701 38ième Rue, Pointe-
Calumet, QC) hosts outdoor EDM concerts every
weekend with local and world-renowned artists.

Toyota continues to make extraordinary strides
in building advanced safety technologies into
its vehicles.
Toyota Safety Sense, for example, is an
advanced suite of active safety systems that will be available
on virtually all models by the fall 2017. It’s available in two
packages, Toyota Safety Sense C and Toyota Safety Sense P.
There’s a feature article in this issue of club Toyota
magazine that details the way this technology works.
There are also some easy-to-watch videos on Toyota
Canada’s YouTube channel that illustrate how and when
these systems are activated.
The videos use animations and other on-screen text and
graphics to help bring these safety systems to life in ways that
just aren’t as easily understood with a printed brochure or article.
The Toyota Safety Sense P: Pre-Collision System with
Pedestrian Detection (PCS with PD) video, for example,
illustrates where the camera and millimeter wave radar
sensors that operate that system are located at the front of
the vehicle. Animations also simulate conditions that would
trigger the system, including having a pedestrian suddenly
move in front of a vehicle.
Vehicle cutaways and animations show the forces that kick
into action when the PCS system activates to help prevent or
mitigate the impact of a collision with a vehicle or person. It’s
a safe and informative way to learn about a technology that is
there in case it’s needed.
