GIVING BACK TO CANADIANS 

Toyota Canada has extended its knowledge-sharing 

partnership with Canadian Blood Services and the Héma-Québec 

Foundation to now include financial support as well. 

The company and its dealers are making a combined annual 

donation of $300,000 to the two organizations. The money will 

help to support their continuous improvement efforts — and 

that’s something Toyota knows a lot about. 

Toyota has been practicing continuous improvement for 

more than 70 years, and has shared the philosophies of the 

world-renowned Toyota Production System with hundreds 

of other organizations. 

The support for Canadian Blood Services began in 2015, when 

the Toyota Production System Support Centre (TSSC) helped

the group identify opportunities for process improvements at its 

production and distribution facilities. Since then, Canadian Blood 

Services has increased production time, reduced packing time 

and cut the steps taken by employees every day by 30 per cent. 

This year, Toyota started working with Héma-Québec’s 

Mother’s Milk Bank, to help find ways to increase capacity 

for future output. 

“When we saw the impact that continuous improvement of the 

processes at Canadian Blood Services and Héma-Québec could 

have on people’s lives, it immediately resonated with us,” said 

Stephen Beatty, Vice President, Corporate with Toyota Canada. 

“Toyota and its dealers are proud to support two organizations 

focused on continuously improving Canadian quality of life.”

Toyota auto safety researchers recently celebrated a milestone 

and embarked on the next stage in their ultimate mission to reduce 

traffic casualties around the world. 

The Collaborative Safety Research Center (CSRC) marked the end of 

a successful five-year stint that contributed to auto safety industry-wide. 

They also launched CSRC Next, a new five-year program 

designed to support a safe transition to the future of mobility. 

The $35 million research effort will focus on autonomous and 

connected vehicle technologies. 

The investment reflects Toyota’s understanding of the importance 

of how humans interact with emerging and advanced vehicle 

technologies, said CSRC director Chuck Gulash. 

The new systems are changing the transportation landscape, he 

said, by creating a teammate relationship in which drivers, occupants 

and vehicles work together for safety and convenience. 

Since its launch in 2011, CSRC has collaborated with leading 

North American universities, hospitals and research institutions, 

and completed 44 research projects, including one at the 

University of Toronto. And they’ve shared the results publicly 

so all can benefit. 

“The CSRC and its mission follow from Toyota’s belief that 

great things happen when good ideas are shared,” said Gulash.

AN ENVIRONMENTAL HAT TRICK 

More proof of how Toyota technology is building cars 

for a more sustainable future is evident in this year’s Green 

Car Awards. Three prestigious titles went to Toyota vehicles 

— including one that puts Toyota on top of the world for the 

second year in a row. 

The Prius Prime took the 2017 World Green Car title. A panel 

of 75 top-level automotive journalists from 23 countries selected 

the Prius Prime from an international entry list of 12 new vehicles. 

Last year, this award went to the Toyota Mirai. 

The Automotive Journalists Association of Canada (AJAC) 

also recognized Toyota by naming the Prius the Canadian 

Green Car of the Year — and the RAV4 Hybrid the Canadian 

Green Utility Vehicle of the Year. 

The Prius is already the most popular hybrid on the planet. 

And the 2017 model “sets new standards for efficiency and 

emissions, even as it provides owners with more style and 

driving fun,” said Cyril Dimitris, Vice President of Toyota Canada. 

AJAC’s choice of the RAV4 Hybrid as Canadian Green 

Utility Vehicle of the Year pays tribute to a winning combination 

of technology, comfort and safety in an ultra-efficient 

compact crossover. 

“The RAV4 Hybrid combines Toyota’s top-selling compact 

utility vehicle in Canada with the fuel efficiency and low 

emissions of the world’s most proven hybrid powertrain,” 

said Dimitris. 

The Green Car awards recognize Toyota’s unwavering 

commitment to designing, engineering and building 

environmentally-advanced vehicles that meet today’s 

demands. And they’re just one more reason for Toyota 

drivers everywhere to take pride in their choice of vehicles. 

Nine young Canadian artists and their 

inspirational visions for the future of 

mobility were named finalists in the 

2017 Toyota Dream Art Contest.

celebration, but it’s especially exciting when it’s a major pillar 

of the company’s lineup like the all-new 2018 Toyota Camry 

and Camry Hybrid. 

The new Camry features bold and expressive styling, a luxurious and 

spacious interior and several new features, including the Canadian debut 

of Toyota’s Entune 3.0 multimedia system. 

“Toyota’s vision is shaped by a desire to constantly move towards a better 

future,” says Stephen Beatty, Vice-President of Toyota Canada. “Our new 

in-vehicle connectivity services deliver peace of mind and convenience, to 

ensure Toyota owners have the best possible ownership experience.” 

Now in its eighth generation, the Camry has undergone a beautiful 

transformation and is ready to continue its run as the best-selling car in 

its segment in Canada for the past two years. It’s built using the Toyota 

New Global Architecture (TNGA), with a stronger, stiffer chassis and 

all-new suspension that gives it a dynamic and athletic feel, without 

sacrificing ride comfort or practicality. 

The all-new Camry also offers plenty of choice, with gasoline models 

available in five trim levels — L, LE, XLE, SE, and XSE — and Hybrid 

models in three trim levels of LE, SE, and XLE. Each offers a competitive 

price point and a high level of features and value. 

The Camry features an all-new, next-generation 2.5-litre four-cylinder 

engine developed specifically to complement the car’s new chassis. It 

provides more horsepower and torque for satisfying acceleration and 

performance, but is engineered for world-leading thermal efficiency through 

a variable cooling system, specialized fuel injectors, and the latest version 

of Toyota’s variable valve timing. All of this translates into impressive fuel 

economy that’s expected to be best-in-class for a midsize sedan. 

The engine is paired with an equally new Direct-Shift automatic 

eight-speed transmission. It shifts smoothly and quickly, with lower first 

and second gears for acceleration, and with higher gears in its top range 

for optimal fuel economy on the highway and at cruising speeds. 

Should you prefer a sportier, hands-on experience, the Direct-Shift 

transmission has a manual mode, which allows you to sequentially shift 

the gears with paddle shifters on the steering wheel on SE and XSE models. 

For those who want some extra power, the 2018 Camry is also available 

with a V6 engine. As with the four-cylinder, it has been optimized to provide 

a great driving experience with excellent fuel economy, and the top-notch 

performance and reliability for which all Toyota products are known. 

Toyota was the first auto manufacturer to offer a hybrid, and the 

2018 Camry Hybrid continues the company’s commitment to green 

technologies. It shares the new 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine, but is 

re-tuned and is mated to Toyota’s hybrid synergy drive powertrain. 

As with all Toyota hybrid models, the system switches seamlessly, 

automatically, and continuously between gasoline, electricity, 

or a combination of the two, depending on driver need, and the 

driving conditions. 

The new hybrid system uses a compact, lightweight battery that’s 

placed under the rear seat. It takes up no interior space, and its position 

lowers the car’s centre of gravity and improves handling. 

The Camry Hybrid uses a continuously variable transmission, or CVT, 

a gearless automatic that always keeps the engine at peak performance

whole new level. The front face differentiates the trim levels, while retaining 

the Camry’s family resemblance across all of them. 

1988 Toyota Camry 

The year was 1983. “Every Breath You Take” by The 

Police was the top-selling song in Canada. Pierre 

Trudeau was Prime Minister. The first pay TV stations 

went on the air. The federal minimum wage was $3.50 

an hour. And Toyota introduced a brand-new sedan 

called the Camry. 

Toyota opened for business in Canada in 1964, 

offering the rear-wheel-drive Corona that would 

cement its spot in the market. In 1983, the Corona 

bowed out to the all-new, front-wheel-drive Camry. 

Available as a sedan or hatchback, the Camry was 

powered by a 95-horsepower four-cylinder engine. 

The early models sold here were imported from 

Japan, but in 1988, the first North American-built 

Camry rolled off the line at Toyota’s brand-new plant 

in Georgetown, Kentucky, which still builds the Camry 

and Camry Hybrid. 

This second-generation model offered a V6 engine 

in addition to the four-cylinder, as well as available 

all-wheel drive. Two years later, J.D. Power called it the 

“most trouble-free car built in America,” and in 1997, for 

the first but certainly not the last time, it would become 

the best-selling car in that country. 

Higher-tech safety items were starting to appear 

on automobiles, and Toyota was quick to adopt them. 

Although sedan production has always stayed in the 

U.S., Toyota Motor Manufacturing Canada in Cambridge, 

Ontario built the Camry-based Solara Coupe, and later 

added the Solara Convertible, from 1998 to 2002. 

The first-ever Camry Hybrid debuted for the 2007 

model year, alongside an all-new version of its gasoline 

sibling. This sixth-generation Camry’s edgier design 

would point the way to the future — through the even 

more modern styling of the seventh-generation, and 

now to the all-new 2018 Camry and Camry Hybrid. 

and efficiency. The CVT now has a Sport Mode setting that allows the driver 

to “shift” between pre-set points, just like on the Direct-Shift transmission. 

The Camry’s new high-strength chassis not only improves the driving 

dynamics, but minimizes noise and vibration for a smooth driving experience 

inside the quiet cabin. The new suspension features quicker response, too. 

“Fun-to-drive” is a phrase that gets thrown around a lot, but this new Camry 

truly earns it, and drivers will be looking for any reason to take it out for a spin. 

This new Camry also looks the part. It’s bolder and sportier, with a wider 

stance and a wind-cutting shape that provides better aerodynamics and 

visibility, but without sacrificing interior headroom. 

The new signature styling uses a narrow upper grille featuring the Toyota 

badge, above a larger, lower trapezoidal grille. On the Hybrid model, the 

Toyota badge is accented with a distinctive blue tinge. The hood and fenders 

blend seamlessly into the A-pillars — and, on the XLE and XSE trim levels, a 

panoramic sunroof is standard on gas models. 

The muscular body lines continue to the rear, where all models feature 

LED tail lamps, and the SE model adds a centre diffuser, lip spoiler, and sport 

bumper with black corner garnishes. On the XSE, there’s an available two-tone 

paint scheme with black outer mirrors, black spoiler, and black roof for a lean, 

low look. 

Dazzling as it is on the outside, just wait until you get a look inside. The 

spacious cabin is luxuriously finished and, for the first time, includes available 

leather upholstery in a stunning shade of red. 

And, prepare for dash styling like you’ve never seen in a Camry before. A 

sweeping line flows down from the instrument cluster to the centre console, 

cradling an available eight-inch screen in a single pane of glass. 

The Camry’s cockpit-style design puts essential controls within quick reach 

of the driver, while shared controls are equally easy to access by the passenger. 

That cockpit feel is further enhanced with the latest generation of Toyota’s 

Human Machine Interface, or HMI, which integrates information across the 

centre screen and a multi-information display in the instrument cluster, and 

an available head-up display. 

Of course, this being a Toyota, safety is paramount. The high-strength 

chassis and cabin construction provides internal occupant protection. All 

models come standard with ten airbags, a rearview camera, and the Toyota 

Star Safety System and Toyota Safety Sense P (TSS P). 

TSS P provides Dynamic Radar Cruise Control, Pre-Collision System with 

Pedestrian Detection, Lane Departure Alert with steering assist and Automatic 

High Beams on select models. These high-tech safety enhancements are items 

that you don’t always find on competitors in the segment. 

THE SIDE 

The Camry’s side profile features a 

handsome, wind-cheating shape. 

It looks sleek and low, but it’s 

still practical, with lots of space 

for even the tallest passengers. 

The grille edges sweep down to 

the wheel openings, which wrap 

smoothly around several choices 

of wheel sizes and styles. A sleek 

body line runs from the front 

fender, through the door handles, 

and into the rear fender, further 

emphasizing the design language. 

THE INTERIOR 

The Camry’s dash styling is stunning. Most notable is the curved centre stack, 

which houses an all-new infotainment system behind a glass panel available on 

systems with the 8" screen. The “cockpit-style” configuration provides comfort 

and accessibility to front-seat occupants, while rear-seat passengers enjoy 

spacious legroom. Quality materials and precise fit-and-finish further highlight 

the 2018 Camry’s luxurious cabin. 

THE BACK 

The Camry’s chiseled rear end combines good looks with the convenience of a low lift-over when 

putting items in the trunk. The wraparound lamps further emphasize the wide stance, and feature 

LED taillights. The XLE and XSE trim levels also include LED turn signals and backup lamps. On the 

sporty SE trim grades, a lip spoiler, dark fender garnishes, and a centre diffuser highlight the fun-todrive 

nature. 

THE FRONT 

All models feature a narrow upper grille and larger 

lower grille. The XLE trim’s grille uses a bright 

metallic finish giving it an elegant look, while the 

XSE has an attractive, gloss black finish. The sporty 

SE and XSE trims have a three-piece lower grille 

for a wide, aggressive stance.

Understanding the Toyota New Global Architecture

we hear of great architecture, 

most of us probably think of 

distinctive buildings we’ve 

encountered — tall skyscrapers, 

perhaps; or historic structures that have 

withstood the test of time. We admire these 

works of visionary architects who advanced 

the art and science of their profession. 

There are landmark architectures in the 

automotive world as well, created by visionaries 

who refuse to be constrained by the status quo. 

These visionaries are the managers, planners 

and engineers responsible for the Toyota New 

Global Architecture —TNGA for short — on 

which the all-new 2018 Toyota Camry is based. 

In the context of the automobile, the term 

architecture means the core structure of a 

vehicle and all it includes — the combination of 

philosophy, design and construction that gives 

the car its character. Its soul! 

TNGA, which will be the foundation for 

all Toyota’s future powertrain and vehicle 

development, marks a revolution in the way 

Toyota designs, engineers and manufactures 

vehicles, streamlining the process by 

standardizing the size and location of key 

components within a few common platforms. 

It is integral to Toyota’s mission to build 

ever-better cars that exceed customer 

expectations and will result in cars that are 

more dynamic, athletic, and fun to drive — 

putting a smile on every customer’s face. 

Globally, Toyota currently uses more than 

100 modified platforms and sub-platforms. With 

TNGA, just five basic layouts will be needed 

for Toyota’s whole vehicle range, from compact 

sports cars to SUVs. By 2020, the company 

expects approximately half its vehicles sold 

worldwide will be based on these new platforms. 

But reducing the number of platforms doesn’t 

mean the cars all look or drive the same. Far 

from it, in fact. 

The standardized TNGA elements are 

largely out of sight, giving Toyota designers 

the freedom to produce cars that are visually 

distinctive from each other as well as from 

their predecessors — a point well illustrated by 

the new Camry, Prius and C-HR — all vehicles 

which are based on TNGA platforms. As well as 

cutting-edge design, the TNGA-based cars offer 

a significantly improved driving experience. 

For example, the driver’s environment — 

things such as the pedals, steering column and 

driver’s seat — conform to one of five different 

layouts, designed to achieve an ergonomically 

ideal combination that suits the type of vehicle. 

Each layout can be further refined with 

detailed adjustment to the pedal and pedal 

operation angles, and the position and angle 

of the steering column. 

By focusing on the joint development of 

powertrains and platforms, Toyota is able to 

create a lower centre of gravity (CG) in TNGA 

vehicles, while making components lighter 

and more compact. The result is enhanced 

driving performance, greater fuel efficiency and 

exceptional visibility, as well as more attractive 

styling and outstanding safety performance. 

In the 2018 Camry, for example, the roof 

and hood heights have been lowered, along 

with those of the cowl and instrument panel, 

enhancing outward visibility while contributing 

further to the TNGA platform’s low-stance, 

low-CG design. 

These qualities are fundamental to securing 

a more engaging driving position and more 

precise and responsive handling, with less body 

roll. This means better handling can be achieved 

directly from the quality of the chassis and body 

without compromising ride and comfort. 

By rethinking the body structure in TNGA, 

including the strategic use of high-strength 

steels and the application of a new molding 

technology, Toyota is able to increase overall 

body rigidity by as much as 30 to 65 per cent, 

then further improve it by joining body 

components using such advanced manufacturing 

technologies as laser screw welding. Greater 

rigidity contributes to better chassis 

responsiveness and ride quality, with less body 

roll, for a more rewarding driving experience. 

Further aiding that dynamic performance 

in the Camry is an innovative new double 

wishbone rear suspension system. It is similar 

in principle to that in Toyota’s World Endurance 

Championship race cars, and imbues the chassis 

with responsive handling and precise steering 

control while simultaneously delivering ride 

quality on par with premium luxury vehicles. 

A new four-point engine mounting system 

adds to the vehicle’s civil road manners as it 

greatly reduces unwanted noise, vibration and 

harshness (NVH) from permeating into the 

passenger compartment. 

TNGA also brings a new approach to the 

design of the engine compartment, by placing 

components lower down in the chassis, as well 

as introducing newly developed powertrains 

that are light and compact and themselves have 

a low centre of gravity. While it was a given that 

these new powertrain units were designed to 

have a high level of environmental performance, 

their development focused on achieving driving 

performance that is "Direct & Smooth." 

In themselves, these new powertrain units 

provide approximately 10 per cent better 

performance and approximately 20 per cent 

improved fuel economy. Combined with the 

overall evolution of the vehicle structure, 

including aerodynamics, weight reduction and 

other factors, they open the way to even greater 

power, performance and fuel economy. 

TNGA isn’t limited to the design of the vehicle 

itself. It has also been applied to the legendary 

Toyota Production System (TPS), which has been 

the benchmark for manufacturing processes 

worldwide since it was established in 1948. 

TNGA-BASED CARS OFFER A 

SIGNIFICANTLY IMPROVED 

DRIVING EXPERIENCE 

In the most significant changes to that 

system yet, the adoption of TNGA principles 

will ultimately lead to vehicle factories being 

smaller and more flexible, and better able to 

respond quickly and easily to accommodate 

new or additional models. 

TNGA production lines are mounted on 

the floor rather than suspended from above 

so they are simpler to install and adjust in 

length. Toyota anticipates TNGA will enable 

multiple models to be produced on the same 

line, supported by new, more efficient ways of 

producing parts and systems. 

Accommodating changes in design and 

specifications will also be simpler and quicker 

to achieve. Further gains will be made in 

environmental efficiency, by using equipment 

that is not only more compact, but also uses 

less energy. 

By implementing this innovative, integrated 

development approach for vehicle platforms 

and powertrain systems, as well as their 

manufacturing processes, more time and 

resources can be devoted to designing and 

developing new models and technologies. 

That means Toyota will be able to build 

ever-better cars to satisfy the needs of its 

customers — and put a smile on their faces 

when they drive them!

While all RAV4 models have that go-anywhere flair, the RAV4 Trail is 

the perfect travel companion to get the family to the campground or the 

cottage, along with everything you need for the perfect vacation. 

As with all RAV4 models, the RAV4 Trail comes with Dynamic Torque 

Control all-wheel drive. Under most driving conditions, the system 

powers the front wheels for optimal fuel efficiency. 

When driving conditions change, such as on wet or slippery roads, in 

off-road situations, or in snow and ice in winter, the system automatically 

switches to all-wheel drive. This provides maximum traction and surefooted 

performance, no matter what the weather. 

For even more challenging situations, such as that last stretch of rocky 

trail up to the perfect camping getaway site, Dynamic Torque Control 

AWD also has a “lock” setting, to ensure you get to your get-away-fromit-all 

spot. 

The RAV4 Trail’s suspension system has a slightly higher ride height 

than other RAV4 models. 

The RAV4 Trail also includes a standard Tow Prep Package, with 

a maximum towing capacity of 1,588 kg (3,500 lbs). The package 

includes an upgraded radiator, along with supplemental engine oil 

and transmission fluid coolers. 

RAV4 TRAIL 

RAV4 Trail includes Trailer Sway Control, a function of 

the electronic stability control that helps reduce trailer 

movement for stress-free towing. 

The RAV4 Trail looks the part, too. The trim level includes: 

• 18-inch, five-spoke black alloy wheels; 

• large fender flares; 

• lower body guards; 

• black headlight bezels; 

• black fog lamp surrounds. 

Inside, the cabin features: 

• unique interior trim panels; 

• a leather-wrapped gearshift knob; 

• Trail-badged door sill protectors; 

• all-weather floor and cargo mats with the Trail logo 

• a 120V/100W power outlet in the cargo area. 

As with all RAV4 models, the RAV4 Trail includes hill start 

assist control, which momentarily holds the brake on 

inclines while you move your foot back to the throttle,

mated to Toyota’s Hybrid Synergy Drive in the RAV4 Hybrid models. 

Gasoline versions use a six-speed automatic transmission, while Hybrid 

models use an automatic Electronically Controlled Continuously Variable 

Transmission (ECVT).

Enhanced Roadside Assistance and Emergency Assistance 

mean there’s always a helping hand available when you 

need one. A live operator is just a button-push away, 

24 hours a day, seven days a week should an unexpected 

event or emergency come along. 

Whether you run out of fuel or get a flat tire after 

encountering some unexpected road debris, all you have 

to do is press the SOS button and a highly trained live 

agent is on the line — even if you don’t have your phone 

with you or are in an area with limited reception. 

Your agent will determine your needs, and make 

arrangements for a tow, a jump-start, a fix for your flat, 

fuel delivery or whatever else you need. 

With Automatic Collision Notification, should an 

unexpected event result in a collision in which the airbags 

are deployed or an impact sensor is triggered, Toyota 

Entune automatically connects you to a response centre 

agent. The agent will attempt to talk to your vehicle’s 

occupants to determine the best course of action, and 

even stay with you throughout the incident so you’re 

not alone. 

Once the agent has determined what sort of emergency 

assistance you need, he or she will notify local emergency 

services for quick dispatch of fire, police and emergency 

medical services. If the occupants of your vehicle 

can’t respond to the agent, emergency services are 

dispatched automatically. 

Toyota Entune works even if you find yourself having 

to report to law enforcement that your vehicle has gone 

missing. Using Safety Connect’s cellular and GPS-based 

tracking system, an operator will “ping” the vehicle and, 

as soon as the vehicle is turned out, will know the vehicle’s 

location, which they in turn can report to police.

Don’t get caught by surprise when winter’s 

cold fingers and icy breath arrive

Winter in Canada is a fact of life. Ready or not, it keeps on 

coming back, year after year. And based on the experience 

of the past few winters, it seems to be getting more erratic, 

with even greater extremes. So there’s nothing to be gained 

by denying the inevitable. It’s time to get prepared for whatever the 

coming winter may throw at us. 

Here are some tips on how to prepare your vehicle so you don’t get 

caught by surprise when winter’s cold fingers and icy breath suddenly 

arrive, and how to stay safe as a driver through winter’s worst. 

START WITH WINTER TIRES 

The place to start is with the winter tires — four, not just two! Even if you 

live in a rare area of the country where snow and ice are not the norm, if 

temperatures routinely drop below +7 o C, that’s winter tire territory. 

Winter tires — identified by a “mountain/snowflake” symbol — deliver 

superior traction and control on any surface at temperatures below about 

+7 o C. Their rubber compound is designed to remain flexible and maintain 

adhesion capabilities down to the -30 o C range, while other tires tend to 

harden and lose grip well above zero. 

Widespread testing has demonstrated those advantages of winter tires 

on snow and ice. In one such test, it took a vehicle about three car-lengths to 

stop from 40 km/h. All-season tires took more than a full car-length further 

and the car was still going 20 km/h when at the point where it stopped on 

winter tires. Acceleration tests showed similar advantages for winter tires. 

Perhaps surprisingly, all-wheel-drive doesn’t preclude the need for 

winter tires. It may help acceleration in slippery conditions, because it 

spreads the driving forces over four footprints instead of two. But when 

it comes time to stop, it all comes down to just the tires. 

If you think you can get away without winter tires because you drive 

on well-plowed, paved roads most of the time, consider that it is not 

"most of the time" that you're likely to find yourself in trouble. It is that 

one exceptional circumstance. So the key question becomes: "Is most 

of the time good enough?" Your life may well depend on your answer. 

PREPARING BEYOND TIRES 

While choosing the right tires is the starting point, there are other 

preparations you should make as well. It’s good practice to bring 

your Toyota to your local dealership for routine maintenance such as 

changing oil and checking all fluid levels, as well as brake and exhaust 

systems, and to have the battery performance and charging system 

checked. Cold weather is hard on batteries and some sub-zero morning 

is not the time to find out that yours is at the end of its days. 

They will check your wiper blades and replace them if they are split, 

leave streaks, or skip. Top up the washer fluid reservoir with fluid rated 

for an appropriate temperature and be sure to keep a spare container 

or two on board. 

Service technicians will make sure all lamps are working properly. 

If needed, consider having the headlamp covers cleaned and polished. 

Grit and grime can reduce their clarity over time. 

Be sure you’ve got a good, long-handled snow brush and ice scraper 

in the vehicle as well as an emergency kit that includes: 

• Blanket and extra clothing suitable for the season; 

• Flashlight and extra batteries; 

• Full first aid kit; 

• Portable shovel; 

• Traction aids; 

• Jumper cables 

Throughout the winter, it’s a good idea to keep your fuel tank at least 

half full. Doing so helps ensure that you won't run out of fuel in case of 

a prolonged stoppage. It can also help keep ice crystals from forming 

inside the fuel line. 

In the deepest depths of winter — or in any season — 

call upon Toyota Roadside Assistance for help when you 

need it. A roadside assistance representative is available 

24 hours a day, 365 days a year throughout North 

America to respond to your call for help. 

Toyota Roadside Assistance is provided to Toyota 

owners at no extra charge for three years (36 months) 

with the purchase of every new Toyota. (You can also 

extend the service beyond the initial 36 month for 

a small annual fee.) 

When something does go awry, all you need to do is 

call: 1-888-TOYOTA-8 (1 888-869-6828) and provide 

the Toyota Roadside Assistance Representative with your 

name, vehicle identification number, the nature of your 

situation, and where your vehicle can be located. 

Emergency roadside services include; 

• Towing: to your preferred Toyota dealer within 

50 km or closest dealer within 300 km, or, in the 

case of an accident, to your dealer or an Accident 

Reporting Centre (if required by your Municipality). 

• Battery boost: or towing if your vehicle fails to start 

after boosting; 

• Lockout service: if you accidentally lock your keys 

in your car; 

• Fuel delivery: up to five litres of fuel provided; 

• Tire change service: they can install your spare 

if you have a flat tire; and 

• Winching: pulling your vehicle out if it’s stuck 

in a ditch, mud, or snow. 

Note: Warranty begins when the vehicle is registered in service, which may

ON THE ROAD 

Before you venture out, whether cross-country 

or just commuting, check for weather and road 

conditions. If you can postpone your trip, it’s 

probably safest to wait out any potentially 

hazardous weather. 

If you have to go, plan your route in advance 

and let someone know your plans. Accept 

that the trip is going to take longer in these 

conditions and allow extra time to reach your 

destination safely. Take a mobile phone with you 

in case of emergency and keep these tips in mind: 

> Be sure you can see — Clear the windshield, 

side windows and rear window of snow and ice 

to ensure clear vision in all directions. Brush the 

snow away from the air intake vents below the 

windshield as well, to help keep it from being 

drawn into the ventilation system and fogging up 

the windows. Also, brush the snow off the hood, 

to keep it from blowing onto the windshield as 

you drive, and clean off the headlights. 

> Be seen — Also clear off the taillamps, so 

you can be seen from behind and turn on your 

headlights — daytime running lights don’t 

necessarily activate the taillights. 

> Be smooth — Drive as if you have eggs between 

your feet and the pedals — be gentle when applying 

the brakes; ditto when pressing the accelerator. 

Don’t make sudden moves with the steering wheel, 

either. Remember the tires are struggling to get 

grip even at slow speeds, so any quick movements 

can destroy what minimal traction they may have. 

> Give yourself room — In slippery conditions 

you’ll need more distance to stop — a lot more. 

So leave extra space behind the vehicle ahead 

so you have room to stop safely or take evasive 

action if others make sudden moves into your 

vehicle’s path. 

> Anticipate — Consider what may lie ahead, 

especially if your vision is limited. Even though 

you may know the road well, be prepared in case 

there’s a crisis situation over a hill or around a 

curve ahead. 

> If you get into a skid — All new Toyota 

vehicles sold in Canada since 2012 are 

equipped with Electronic Stability Control, 

which has dramatically reduced the risk of 

skidding, although it may still occur in extreme 

circumstances. If a skid occurs, whatever the 

cause, you must remove or reduce the cause 

to correct it. If you're braking, lift off the brake 

until the wheels begin to roll again. If you're 

accelerating, or just going too fast, ease off the 

accelerator pedal and let the vehicle slow down. 

If the front wheels are sliding, turn the 

steering wheel back towards straight ahead 

until you can feel the wheels gripping again. 

Then turn smoothly back to the direction you 

want to go and, with your reduced speed and 

new-found traction, the vehicle should respond. 

If the rear wheels are sliding out, just look 

where you want to go and steer where you want 

to go. You tend to steer where you look, so it’s 

important to look in the right direction. Better 

still, follow practices outlined above so as not 

to get into a skid. 

> If you’re at risk of getting stuck — All modern 

cars are equipped with traction control but 

that doesn’t eliminate the possibility of getting 

stuck. If your tires start spinning when you try 

to drive away and your vehicle stops moving, 

ease back on the accelerator immediately. If the 

tires don't regain traction immediately, apply 

the brakes. 

If you sit there with your wheels spinning, 

you'll just dig yourself in deeper. Shift into 

reverse and try again — applying the brakes 

immediately if the wheels spin and motion

stops. Continue to alternate between forward 

and reverse, using gentle pedal application 

and changing direction as soon as the wheels 

begin to spin. Move the vehicle as far as you 

can in each direction, even if it’s just a couple 

centimetres each time, using the vehicle's 

momentum to carry you past your initial 

starting point. 

If you don’t dig in, you should eventually 

clear a driving path if you're patient, unless the 

vehicle’s body itself is hung up on deep snow 

— in which case it’s time for a shovel, some 

traction aids or external help. 

Perhaps the most important key to safe 

winter driving is to slow down and be patient. 

Forget about trying to pass slower vehicles. 

Staying behind them may be the safest place on 

a slippery road. Keep aware of what’s happening 

around you and be prepared to adapt to rapidly 

changing circumstances, and you’ll increase the 

odds for making it to your destination safely.

There’s a reason The New York Times included 

a visit to Carnaval de Québec in their 1000 

Places to See Before You Die. It’s considered 

a once-in-a-lifetime experience, but we can 

enjoy it right here at home every winter. 

The festivities made their debut in 1894 to 

help a pioneering population endure harsh winter 

conditions, but it didn’t truly come into its own 

until it was revived with a modern twist in 1955. 

Today, more than 200 activities honouring 

the great Canadian winter and Québécois 

traditions take place across the city and in 

neighbouring regions, drawing nearly 500,000 

visitors every year. Some of the most popular 

locations include: 

PLACE DE L’ASSEMBLÉE-NATIONALE 

Considered the heart of the festival, the Loto 

Québec Zone is home to Bonhomme’s Ice 

Palace. Visitors can watch graffiti artists at

premier festival of Canada’s Arctic goes into full 

swing. For more than 50 years, the Toonik Tyme 

Festival has been celebrating Inuit traditions 

and the return of spring. 

What began as a small festival in 1965, 

featuring traditional Inuit games, throat singing 

and dancing and a community feast at Toonik 

Lake, has blossomed into a can’t-miss cultural 

event enjoyed by residents and tourists alike. 

TODAY’S TOONIK TYME FESTIVAL 

Every year, the Toonik Tyme Society, 

comprised of local organizations, businesses 

and more than 100 volunteers, puts on the 

cultural festival featuring a number of highly 

anticipated traditional activities that reflect 

Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit, including: hunting and 

fishing; Igloo building; dog team races; throat 

singing; drum dancing and harpoon throwing.

Our writer takes the new Toyota Genuine Dash 

Camera accessory for a spin and finds fun new 

ways to record adventures along her journey

about my adventures putting 

the Toyota Genuine Dash 

Camera through its paces was 

a pretty great one. Cruising through my 

neighbourhood, zipping into the heart 

of downtown and taking it slow in the 

countryside, the Dash Camera offered 

unique perspectives I wouldn’t otherwise 

have noticed. 

Apart from its usefulness at recording 

any unfortunate traffic incidents, it also 

provides limitless footage of shareable 

moments throughout the day — a perfect 

complement for our mobile-friendly world. 

One of the first things I noticed about 

the new Toyota Genuine Dash Camera is 

how unobtrusive it is. Tucked behind the 

rearview mirror with no dangling wires, 

you wouldn’t know it’s there unless 

you’re looking for it. 

Designed to continuously record 

whenever the car’s ignition is on, the 8 GB 

industrial-grade memory card will capture 

footage on a two-hour loop, recording over 

the earliest footage when the card gets full. 

A toggle on the side of the Dash Camera 

allows you to record with or without sound 

at any time. With only one button, no 

screen to distract you, and one switch to 

turn the microphone on/off, it’s safe and 

easy to operate while you’re driving. 

RECORDING IS EASY 

There are two ways you can record 

specific events: 

Interesting Event Recording: By 

pressing the action button once, you’ll 

automatically save what the Dash 

Camera recorded 12 seconds before 

and 8 seconds after you press the 

button. This feature is ideal to capture 

any traffic incidents or special moments. 

Adventure Mode: When you press 

and hold the action button, the Dash 

Camera beeps three times to let you 

know you’re now in adventure mode. 

This mode is used capture and save 

adventures from your road trip. You 

can then upload using the companion 

Dash Camera app on your phone or 

the downloadable software on your 

computer. When you think you’ve 

captured the footage you want to 

save, simply hold the button again 

and listen for three beeps to exit 

adventure mode. You can record for 

up to one hour in adventure mode. 

There are also two modes that 

lock footage automatically with no 

user input: Incident Recording mode; 

triggered by a collision and Parking 

Surveillance mode that automatically 

records if the vehicle is disturbed or 

struck while parked.

Here are a few ideas: 

Send updates while on vacation. 

Answer those “How’s the vacation going?” texts and 

emails with a video clip from a rest stop on the road. The 

Toyota Genuine Dash Camera allows the option of date, 

time and location stamping on each photo and video. You 

also have the convenience of being able to post to social 

media straight from the app. 

URBAN ADVENTURE 

First stop: Capture the city. From the quiet, leafy streets of our neighbourhood 

to the electric excitement of downtown, my family and I got caught up in the 

spirit of the metropolis in eye-opening new ways. 

Playing tourists in our own city helped us appreciate the landmarks that 

give it personality. We also realized how fun it would be to take the Dash 

Camera on a long road trip filled with iconic scenery. 

Make memorable vacation videos. 

Our experiment with recording our in-vehicle 

conversations opened up a world of possibilities. With 

the flick of a button, it’s possible to turn on or off the mic 

to capture singalongs, travel word games and even the 

requisite navigation arguments inherent in every road trip. 

(Bonus: your footage will reveal who’s right.) 

Create a scavenger hunt. 

Use the Dash Camera to capture scenery, statues, 

signs or other guideposts around your community. 

Share by mobile phone with players. Armed only with 

your pics or videos, participants are directed to hit 

the road on a quest to take the same photos/videos 

to complete the challenge. 

Become a better driver. 

The Toyota Genuine Dash Camera footage offers 

intelligence on the driver’s speed and driving style. If you 

question the habits of a younger driver in the house, you 

can scan your Dash Camera footage to look for things 

like following too closely or speeding. Review the video 

together to identify safer ways to navigate the road. (You 

can even track their journey if you’re feeling a bit suspicious.) 

Make time lapse videos. 

Want to show your friends an epic journey? Upload 

your footage using the software or the app and create 

a time-lapse video using your own editing software. Post 

it to social media and, voila! Watch the "likes" pour in. 

COUNTRY ROADS TAKE ME HOME 

On a drive into the country, I instinctively began to chide the kids to give 

the tablet and the texting a break, but when I glanced through the rearview 

mirror, I found attentive eyes blinking back at me. For a digital generation, 

knowing that we were getting great footage of our drive clearly made them 

automatically more engaged in the passing scenery. 

My teenager was no doubt thinking about what she’d choose to include 

in her Snapchat story and my son was on the lookout for cool things he 

might upload to his YouTube page. My husband and I were thrilled to be able 

to record some funny conversations through the Dash Camera’s microphone. 

We knew the audio and video footage will provide priceless mementos of 

this time in our lives.

When we were done recording, the process 

of reviewing, saving and sharing videos 

was a breeze. The Dash Camera comes with 

a mobile app and its own Wifi hotspot so 

you can connect, save and share from the 

road — when you’re safely parked, of course. 

You can also pop the memory card into your 

computer and use the Toyota Genuine Dash 

Camera software to save and share your videos 

later. Choose to reveal the date, time, driving 

speed and latitude/longitude so you’ll have all 

the details of every drive. 

Connected to Google Maps, it’s easy to sort 

through your footage by location to pinpoint 

which part of the video you want to review. 

The Toyota Genuine Dash Camera will 

be available as a dealer-installed accessory 

for certain 2017 and newer models. 

It’s a fun and playful way to record lots of 

road trip memories to share with friends and
