PROGRAM DIRECTOR
We are a full time international education
and football academy based in the
South of England. Our UEFA qualified
coaches have experience working within
professional football at both club and
international level. We also offer a wide
range of football services such as one to
one sessions, short term programmes
and football packages for groups, teams
and parties. A levels, IELTS and a BTEC
sport award is also available. Players
will live, train and relax right here on site
and compete in competitions both domestically
and internationally.

We are so proud to have Daryl Willard
as our Director of Football. He
is a UEFA PRO qualified coach with
Premier League experience as a
youth coach at both Tottenham
Hotspur and Chelsea. He has International
experience as the Sporting
Director of Azerbaijan and worked
closely with Tony Adams. To top it
all he is a thoroughly decent person
too!
He is honest and realistic about
players and their potential and
has a wealth of real life experience
in professional football which he
brings to bear in the day to day running
of the academy.
As part of his UEFA PRO licence
qualification he has to attend various
refresher courses from time to
time in areas such as safeguarding
and coaching technique.
Just recently he took a group of
young boys as part of his latest
evaluation and assessment at Crystal
Palace Academy.
Of course he passed this session
with flying colours!
Daryl said:
‘I look forward to these sessions
with the FA as it is great to encounter
new coaching scenarios. I am
always immersing myself in the
melting pot of the latest coaching
technique from across the world.
These FA days provide great opportunities
to work with new faces
in the players and coaches and to
encounter new environments. My
belief is that a coach never stops

and refine their technique and as
such I am always looking at and
talking football to continue my personal
professional development.’

The college of the Holy Child
is located in the heart of
Hastings; a place steeped in
rich history. Hastings was
the location of the 1066 Battle
of Hastings, fought nearby
where Battle Abbey now
stands. On off days students
are encouraged to socialise
within and explore the beautiful
local town and all its historic
sites.
Hastings is also a short train
journey away from both
Brighton and England’s capital
city London. Students
will embark on regular trips
to both, in order to sight see,
spend their pocket money
and hopefully buy souvenirs
for family at home!

Each first year student will
share a double study with a
team mate in one of our traditional
boarding houses; the
second year students will be
given single studies.
Each study has a desk for
homework and areas to relax
with easy chairs. Of course
there is plenty of clothes storage
too and stunning polished
wooden floors throughout.

own unique style and own
special character - just like
the students who join us.

Pre activation/Personal training – An extremely
important aspect of a footballers preparation is pre
activation. The smaller muscles of our body are often the
muscles we forget about. However, these muscles are
the ones that help to stabilise joints and prevent injuries.
Educating the players in this aspect of training will help
them stay as injury free as possible in their careers.

Pre/Post match analysis – Every match and training
session at Stars FA is video recorded. This allows the
coaching staff to accurately analyse the performances of
each player throughout their time with us. Weekly pre and
post match analysis sessions will take place to expand on
tactical and technical elements that have been covered
within training. Each player will have access to their
personal video clips from each match and will expected to
watch, analyse and feed back to the coaching staff, this is a

The transition from childhood to independent adult is not an easy path. There are
many small important skills that young people need to acquire to be ready for
the next stage of their life either at university or in professional football. They will
certainly be living a lot more independently than when at home with you or with
us in the next stage of their lives be that in further study or soccer..
Whilst the student spends time with us we will work on their life skills and teach
them a mixture of useful processes and tasks to help them become independent
and self sufficient. From the traditional markers of independence such as using a
washing machine and doing laundry to cleaning their boots, naming their sports
kit, looking after their material possessions, cooking basic meals, managing their

work time, planning their leisure time, balancing effective study, budgeting their
money, writing their CV – and age dependent learning how to drive, insure a car
and basic car maintenance.
They will also learn crucial 21st Century life skills too such as how to check for
the best price for an item on the internet, manage their online social media
presence, protect their privacy and online profile, understand others motivations
in their online interactions and understand the power and instantaneous nature
of modern online communities in the global village we all inhabit online.
We also remind them how often they need to ring Dad and Mum – well… Skype
or FaceTime!

ACCLIMATISATION
Acclimatisation:
- adaptation to a new climate (a new
temperature or altitude or environment)
In the grandest traditions let us start
by telling you a brief story…
Once upon a time a Premier League
manager was looking to sign a new
player.
He looked at two players for his club,
both were 17 years old, both strikers
and both scored 30 goals in their
league last season, both had ten assists,
both leagues were the same
standard, both even had the same
agent. Phenomenal players both!
How to choose the player? What could
seperate these records?
It can only come down to tiny differences
what we call at Stars Football the
competitive advantage:
All players that join the program at
Stars Football go through various processes
to help them acclimatise and
normalise to the UK and Europe, their
culture and environment. We often
hear from Premier League TV pundits
that players have to ‘adapt’ or ‘adjust’
to the UK when they join a British
club, they even say we should expect
£50,000 a week players to take a year to
settle!
Not our students.
They have already:
1. Eaten a wide variety of new foods
and lived on a Pro players diet.
2. Travelled by air, road and rail in
Europe.
3. Topped up their mobile phone,
used the UK electrical system.
4. Watched British TV, the news and
studied the UK media.
5. Been shopping, supervised and
alone in big and small shops.
6. Know where to get a haircut, visit

the doctors, fetch medicine.
7. Opened a bank account and ad
justed to the pound and her value.
8. Visited cinemas and know how to
enjoy their leisure time.
9. Have access to reptuable advisers
Our players have already overcome
that old Premier League cliché of
‘adapting’.
Never underestimate the value of acclimatisation
to an individual player.
When a manager is choosing between a
player he will look at the extras a given
player brings to the table.
When we hear about a player taking
time to ‘adjust’ or ‘adapt’ to the Premier
League. What does that mean? Is football
so different from country to country?
Yes and no. There are pace differences
and playing standard differences
of course but usually ‘adjusting’ or
‘adapting’ is so much more and relates
to everything from cuisine to language
through the weather differences to culture
the media and on.
Our players have already been through
that learning curve during their time
with us so all they need to focus on is
the football.
The African, American and Asian boys
adjust to Europe, the European boys
adjust to the UK, the UK boys adjust to
different styles of football and we end
up with a player who has experiences
in their memory bank to call on.
Thats why acclimatisation is such a big
deal and often the competitvie advantage
when it comes to contract time!

OUR CAMPUS has a 180 year education legacy. A
large former convent site, originally purchased in
1834 by the Rev. Jones with a bequest of £10,000
from Lady Stanley of Puddington.
In 1848 nuns of the newly formed Catholic teaching
order, ‘The Society of the Holy Child Jesus’ moved
into the convent and set about establishing schools.
The architect William Wilkinson Wardell
was employed to complete the convent building
and design a Girls Poor School and entrance in the
boundary walls, which had been erected in
the middle of the 1830s.
The foundation of the Girls Poor School was laid
in 1849 and the entrance arch built in 1850. The
Girls Poor School is now known as The Gatehouse.
Wardell also built a presbytery on the site in
1856 and at about the same time the founder of the
order, Cornelia Connelly, received permission from
the Catholic church hierarchy to build a training college,
which was built to the south of the girls Poor
School. Now known as ‘Gothic House’ this building
was then named St Michael’s and is a mixture of
styles.
The Training College closed in 1862 and the building
as a whole became the Middle School. In 1883
the Middle School was re-located to Mayfield and
the Junior School moved into the building. At this
time a tunnel was built connecting the building to
the main convent building. In 1914 it is thought that
the northern part of the building was heightened by
a storey.
In 1974 ‘The Society of the Holy Child Jesus’ moved
the whole school to Mayfield and in 1976 the site
was bought for use as a summer language
school.
Stars Football found their permanent home at the
college and all short and long term programs on
offer take place on the campus.
It is likely that the northern part could have been
built originally as part of the school, circa 1849, and
the southern part was built as the training college
circa 1856 as there is a clear change in style.

for 21st Century use.

the students of old and presently
we are restoring these to
their original splendour.

footpaths, flower beds and
even a flower pot that features
in some of the photos
from 160 years ago!

Cornelia Connelly
Founder, Society of the
Holy Child Jesus
1809 - 1879
Who is Cornelia Connelly?
Wife, mother, convert,
founder of a religious congregation
of sisters, candidate
for sainthood –she is all these
things.
Born within a quarter century
of the end of the American
War for Independence, she
refused to be intimidated by
the strictures of the times and
places in which she lived.
Instead, her educational
principles are carried by the
members of her congregation
from the New World to
the Old World to the Third
World, where they continue
to bear much fruit.
At our campus in St Leonard’s
is where the vision for
the Society of the Holy Child
of Jesus started to bear fruit.
You can feel the history and
presence of the past all over.

LEGACY
THE LEGACY of Cornellia Connelly is seen
across the globe with over 40 countries housing
schools founded on the principles of the Society
of the Holy Child Jesus.
These values reflect modernity of thought and
education for all - she was one of the first people
to teach girls Latin and Greek in the 19th
Century and fostered an environment of care.
Her students thrived with exposure to the Arts
through differing media and performances were
common place at the campus.
Ultimately her life was
particularly sad as she
was subject to a lengthy
court case with her husband
removing her children
from her care under
antiquated chattel rules.
The case reached papal
levels of intervention and
was of huge interest in
the mid 19th Century.
Interestingsly Corenllia also had a huge sporting
legacy insisting that the young ladies in her care
undertook regular and meaningful exercise.
They had a crack field hockey team as you can
see form the picture below and when the first
voluntary inspections of girls boarding schools
took place during the 19th Centruy the inspectors
remarked on the rarity of this approach to
physical educaiton and complimented Cornelias
philosophy.
In essence she was a pioneer in many ways and
this was mainly caused
by the pain she endured
in losing contact
with her children.
In typical fashion she
turned this into a positive
for those around
her and ensured a modern
approach to education
and pastoral
care. Our hope is to
continue that legacy of
forward thinking & care

Of course our aim is to prepare excellent footballers here on the South
Coast at our fantastic facility but that is not the whole story. We also intend
to produce young men who are ready for a life not as a player. The harsh
reality is that professional football is competitivie and only the elite few will
be lucky enough to make a living from playing the beautiful game. There
are though a 101 jobs in football that keeps the machine oiled from Lawyers
to physios and agents and administrators, media, business consultants and
on and on. When a student joins Stars Football we look at the whole picture
and ensure there is a future in or out of the game.

Resolution:
‘Can I make it as a professional footballer?’
The Stars Football program is designed to bring closure to this question for all students during their
time with us as we push them to understand the true dedication and commitment required to become
a professional athlete.
They will test themselves daily against their peers, they will be exposed to the professional game
through scouts and academy games, they will follow the lifestyle of a professional footballer, they
will learn to push through the mental and pain barriers required to elevate their performance and
they will find in themselves the true answer of whether they have the heart and desire to do so.
This is a very important part of what we do as it means the question is definitively answered and
does not linger on into their mid twenties. Players without the level or desire to follow a pathway into
the professional game when they leave us will be able to comfortably focus on a new phase in their
life and put aside the dreams of making a living playing professional football.

Professional football in England:
Director of football and head coach Daryl Willard
has a vast knowledge of the game in the
UK. His contacts are extensive. We will find
your level and passport and international
honours dependant can place you in trials in
England.
Professional football in Europe:
We are Official partners with top division
teams in Latvia, Georgia and Lithuania which
help us effectively get trials for players with
the potential to be professionals. We choose
these types of countries because if you do
well bigger clubs take note fast!
Semi professional football:
We will look to place players into semi professional
football to gain experience in the
men’s game. It will help you develop quicker
and understand the difference between academy
football and men’s football.
Amateur level:
We have a selection of Amateur men’s teams
that players who need this type of level and
experience can play. For those of you where
semi professional football is a little too soon.

When you arrive to begin your journey with Stars football
you will receive your training kit and your own peg in the
changing room. You can begin to make yourself at home and
make it your own.
Go next door to collect your boots from the boot room and get
prepared to train.
As you take your seat staring out onto the full size grass
pitch, you can visualise the life of the footballer. Next to our
pitch is a brand new 5 a side area as well as an area for Goal
keepers to train.
Our strength and conditioning coach will take you through
the warm up and coordination work to prepare you for the
session ahead. A pre activation area can be used.
From the football pitches you can take a few small steps onto
the football tennis courts.
After training, we have the nice cold ice baths to repair those
tears in the muscles and prevent injuries. Can you do this?
We have full use of a state of the art Gymnasium and swimming
pool.
During your down time, we have tennis courts, basketball
courts, and a games room which includes, table tennis and a
pool table. We also have a cinema room where we can watch
films and live football and play FIFA on the PS4!
All home and away matches are recorded with players receiving
their very own clips to build your CV. All games are
analysed during the week in the tech suite where we encourage
the players to get involved and take responsibility. What

HALF TERM
PROGRAMS
THROUGHOUT THE YEAR Stars Football offers a selection
of half term and holiday programs for our full
time students and for any other students that want to
attend a short term program during the vacation period.
The tone changes and embraces a real balance between
full time football training and recreation. In the most recent
breaks we have been trampolining, bowling, visited
the cinema, swimming, watched professional football
matches and also semi pro games live. We have eaten out
at Nando’s, Frankie & Bennys had fish and chips, pizza
and McDonalds amongst others and of course the obligatory
half time burger at the game.
We always start a recreationa and football week with
a bang and help the students transisiton from school
mode to holiday. A meal out, a game and an activity to
start the week in style helps set the tone.
The football training is iof intense but proportionate
and is spread over the week in balanced segments on the
pitch and with two competitive matches taking place too.
The players also enjoy some classroom sessions with our
tactics guru Alex during their week. These are invaluable
- one of the short term visitors from another school,
a boy on our February half term week, said he learned
more in five minutes with Alex than he had all term
about how to play his postion from his school coach.
In these sessions they learn about how the top players
position themselves and how managers prepare and finesse
their teams with pre match instructions and tactical
input.Things that our full time boys are used to in
their weekly tactics lessons.

RELIGION
Stars Football key philosophy is the tolerance of each others religious beliefs and respect for those
beliefs. We happily welcome students and families of all faiths to our campus.
Our outlook is that religion is a personal matter for each individual and family to celebrate as they
prefer and as program leaders our job is to facilitate worship through organised attendance to formal
sites of religious engagement and to encourage personal religious reflection.

We take the responsibility of spiritual instruction for our students very seriously. Our campus
was originally founded to provide a home for religious study in 1834 and benefits from
the historic Augustus Pugin designed private Chapel where opportunities for reflection and
contemplation abound.
The staff will always work with families to make sure this part of your child’s life is respected
and your general and individual preferences adhered to. We are experienced in understanding
the different needs of multiple faiths and can readily accommodate your requirements.

AS A PARENT one of the hardest decisions is where to
place your child for their education. Is home better than

Once the decision is made for an overseas school we are
able to help you and your education agent through the
minefield of school selection and placement with real
experience on the ground. Our inside knowledge of UK
schools and education establishments means we can get
a really good idea of where a child will fit quite early on
in our assessment process with you and streamline recommendations
that will suit your family.
Many of our children come with strong objectives and
plans for the future beyond football or music or art and
we see our job as helping the parents and agent to develop
a strong pathway through English education to
achieve these goals and progress to great universities.
The youngest children need additional support and there
must be strong communication between the school and
the family. We help facilitate this and get involved in
things such as school unifrom and book purchases, identifying
trips and activity programs that would benefit the
child and working with school pastoral teams to ensure
the child is supported and performing in a stimulating
environment. We also attend parents evenings to meet
teachers and get individual subject feedback for parents.
As children get older their needs change dramatically
and our role tends to become more of a remote education
mangement scenario - attending parents evenings
occassionally and interacting with the students directly
from time to time to make sure they are outlining and
achieving goals. Of course the schools are epxerts at developing
the children and independent teenagers will
communicate with their academic leaders directly.

SELECTION NIGERIA
2018, LAGOS- AGEGE
ONE OF THE HIGHLIGHTS of our year is when
we are asked to visit a country and run a
selection or trials event. We arrange the football
side and bring talent scouts and clubs with us
from across Europe.
Last November we were fortunate enough to
be asked to co-ordinate the trials on behalf
of one of Nigeria’s biggest music companies
Irukka in Lagos.
In association with Paris Saint Germain
Academy they had arranged regional trials
involving some 8,000 people across the
country and we came to town for finals week
bringing club managers, academy directors
and agents for the final selection in Lagos.
Over four days our team of European scouts and
football decision makers took notes and whittled
down the players. Four were ultimately selected for
further trials in Europe and have the opportunity to
go on and make a name for themselves in the world
of professional football.
Stars Football is happy to come and work in any
country across the globe to coach, train and
trial players. Our network is extensive and our
partnerships diverse meaning we can always fit a
solution to any event.
