OUR WORK IN SCHOOLS
PLAY IT FORWARD
Over the past 10 years, London Music Masters’
reach has grown from 60 children in two Lambeth
schools to 1,500 children in seven schools across
three inner-London boroughs. LMM Learning is the
largest programme of its kind in the UK, achieving
musical outcomes unparalleled in the sector. This
success is thanks to the vision and dedication of its
founder Victoria Robey OBE who served as both
chief executive and chair and now holds a lifetime
trusteeship and is our most active advocate and
supporter. Her passion is emulated by a committed
and ambitious team of staff, teachers and volunteers
as well as theremarkable schools, families and
students who comprise LMM Learning.
Many of the pupils who graduated from our
programme at the end of Year 6 are now using their
musical skills to explore new instruments and genres,
continuing their violin studies at London’s junior
conservatoires, confidently approaching their music
GCSE at excellent secondary schools, performing on
stage in national ensembles. Perhaps most importantly
the students return to inspire and mentor our current
pupils through our alumni programme.
Every Single Child is worth a great
music education
Excellence and inclusion are two of our key values
and our principal aim is to demonstrate that any
child can thrive in and through music, regardless of
their background. We provide tuition to children in
our partner schools from the age of four to eleven.
This starts with a musicianship programme
that sees our teachers not only encourage the
development of each child’s musical ability, but also
that of their class teacher. This enables the child’s
musical learning to continue throughout the week.
Musicianship helps children to develop a practical
understanding of the elements of music and a
confidence in their own musicality through song,
movement, listening, game and play.
Learning an instrument comes next. London Music
Masters provides every child in Year 1 and Year 2 with
a violin or cello of their own to take care of. This is a
huge responsibility and a valuable learning experience
for the child. In these first two years of instrumental
learning, each child participates in three lessons a
week, a combination of larger and smaller group
lessons. These take place both within school time as
well as outside of it, which crucially allows parents and
carers to be involved in their children’s learning.
For the many children that continue to learn with
LMM until the end of primary school, regular tuition is
enhanced by a huge variety of musical opportunities.
Pupils can join orchestras, participate in holiday
courses, take part in creative composition workshops,
receive mentoring and masterclasses from professional
musicians and perform in world-class venues. Those
wanting to gain teaching experience and leadership
skills are provided with these opportunities.
Those who want to achieve junior conservatoire
performance standard will be given support to do just
that. Pathways is a bespoke programme for students
from communities underrepresented in classical music
who have the ability to achieve a national standard
of performance. The programme was pioneered by
Prof. Itzhak Rashkovsky (Royal College of Music), our
founding artistic director, who taught our first Pathways
students. 100% of Pathways graduates auditioning
for conservatoires have been successful under the
guidance of Prof. Rashkovsky, Prof. Ani Schnarch (Royal
College of Music), Damon Flanagan (Trinity Laban
Conservatoire) and their LMM Learning teachers. We
are proud to have taught over 2,000 children since
2008, but we will never stop seeing the individuality
and potential of each and every young musician with
whom we work.
Support London Music Masters
London Music Masters is an organisation on a
powerful mission – with a long-term vision for change.
We take great pride in having raised substantial
support from individuals, trusts, foundations, and
corporate partners. In 2016/17, voluntary donations
made up over 80% of our income. The remainder
comes from fees charged to schools for our services.
The lack of funding for state schools is never far
from the headlines and we work hard to ensure
that costs are as low as possible whilst delivering a
world-class experience for the students. Each of our
partner schools invests significant resources into the
music education of their students by partnering with
us. This year alone the investment from voluntary
donors and schools helped us provide tailored
tuition and outstanding musical experiences to 1,500
young instrumentalists who each receive their own
instrument and 1.5 hours of tuition per week. We
believe that the acquisition of musical skills is only the
beginning of the impact that this investment will have.
Regular gifts help us to plan for the future. £21
(equivalent to a four mile journey in a Black Cab) is
how much it costs to teach one of our children violin,
each month. By committing to our regular-giving
programme, you ensure we can continue giving
children the chance to make a significant difference
to their path in life.
Corporate partners, Altruism & Corporate
Social Responsibility
We might not have a gallery, concert hall or ‘best seats’
in the theatre to offer your executives, but we focus on
genuine social inequality, creating pathways to brilliant
futures. If your company believes in philanthropy over
sponsorship, we are waiting for you.
