Flag Plaza - Scout Center
The general administration and program offices of Laurel Highlands Council, B.S.A. are located
in Flag Plaza-Scout Center, a glistening Indiana limestone building situated at the top of Pittsburgh’s
Golden Triangle.
Dedicated on Independence Day 1968, Flag Plaza-Scout Center is an educational and patriotic
legacy given to America’s young people by Vivian W. Lehman in memory of her husband Chester
H. Lehman.
The Vivian W. Lehman Wing was dedicated November 1, 1983. Housed in the William S.
Dietrich II Bicentennial Room are thirteen works of art depicting America’s heritage. The eloquent
painting “One Hundred Years Ago,” from the Centennial celebration inspires all who view it.
The Milton Caniff Gallery contains works by well-known cartoonists expressing, through
the cartoon media, their salutes to the Bicentennial and our country.
In “Freedom’s Atrium,” a nine-foot model of the Statue of Liberty offers a stirring audible
message at the push of a button.
Visitors to Flag Plaza can ring an exact replica of the Liberty Bell, cast at the same
Whitechapel Foundry as the original in London, England. They can also listen to “The Bell Speaks,”
the Liberty Bell’s own story.
The council’s Eagle Scout Registry is displayed in the Flag Room. The Registry is a permanent
archive which records the name of each Eagle Scout from the Laurel Highlands Council since
1915. Eagle Scouts and their leaders are invited to visit Flag Plaza and place their signatures as
listed in the book.
