<strong>Anthracite</strong> is extracted almost exclusively from previously disturbed sites. After<br />
retrieving the coal from the old mines, the land is filled in and reclaimed. There are<br />
various ways to mine anthracite coal. Namely, there are two major methods. Deep, or<br />
underground, Deep mining involves a system of shafts, slopes, and rock tunnels<br />
connecting the veins being mined. Surface mining, or open pit mining, is another way<br />
to extract coal. This method is conducted on hillsides and is visible from the exterior.<br />
