__ apprenticeship
At the beginning of my apprenticeship, it was important to me not to sit for
the whole day at the computer without working with my hands. The training
as a certified designer of jewellery and artefacts at the Pforzheim Goldsmith
School gave me the chance to test the boundaries of materials and technology
and to experiment until my fingers were raw. Objects often emerged which
were not necessarily wearable on a day to day basis. The focus was on the relationship
between man and object in the interplay with space, proportion,
structure and surface. It was the attempt to broaden, the language by which
jewellery is commonly understood. This meant that mainly one-off pieces or
small series were created that come under the heading of artist jewellery.
8
__ schmückbar
Together with 3-5 fellow students from the Pforzheim Goldsmith School, I ran a small jewellery
gallery with a workshop area, at the same time as doing my training. After we decided on a theme
for the exhibition, jewellery was made by us and other classmates. The exhibition space was
transformed accordingly to provide a holistic experience. We also participated in external exhibitions.
It was interesting to take the jewellery into the outside world and to engage in explanation
and dialogue. At this time, we managed to persuade the friends‘ association of the Pforzheim
Goldsmith School to take over a share of the long-term rental costs for the gallery. Therefore the
Schmückbar still exists today and will pass from one generation of students at the Pforzheim
Goldsmith School to another.

__ starting point
We buy more and more on the internet and receive parcels almost every day.
Rectangular standard packages fit poorly to the shipped goods. Air spaces
arise, that are filled with cushioning material. Both the packaging and the
cushioning material is usually used only once, packaging waste is the result.
Especially in Germany packaging waste is thrown away like never before.
Around 17 million tonnes per year.
Sometimes we reuse the odd parcel but they take up a certain amount of
storage space and we don’t have time to constantly think about how to reuse
them. When recycling, even the separation of padding material from cartons
is not always an easy task. The Air Parcel provides the chance to intervene.

__ Concept
The Air Parcel is a reusable parcel that consists of a flexible packing sleeve and
is part of a reuse and a recycling cycle. The packaging sleeve adapts perfectly to
the content. It can be rolled up to the dimension of the content and can then be
inflated with air. The air allows to be optimally adjusted to the measurements
of postal goods. Instead of utilising unnecessary and excessive amounts of
transported air, the Air parcel gives optimal protection to the goods, making
the use of padding material redundant. A lot of material, weight and the emissions
of polluting gases can be saved.
When the Air Parcels are empty they can be reduced to a minimal volume
through deflation. As a result less storage space in the field of logistics is required.
The usually empty return trips logistics transporters are used for the
reuse and recycling cycle. They bring back the empty Air parcels to the mail
order companies and damaged Air parcels to the Packaging Manufacturers.
Through its multiple use the Air parcel contributes to rethink the use of of
everyday objects. The focus is on the using instead of owning.
_ Inspiration
Its construction is based on inflatable bags used
as padding in freight transport. The Air Parcel
consists of a co-extruded plastic pouch and a
semi-extensible kraft paper skin. This construction
combines the advantages of an airtight
inner skin that guarantees impermeability under
high pressure, with a protective and stabilising
outer skin.
16
Craft paper // inner skin
bioplastic // inner skin
bioplastik // outer skin
bioplastic // valve // closer
craft paper // outer skin
__ Construction
The design and construction of the package ensure a clean separation and recycling
of the individual materials in the respective recycling systems, according to the
Cradle to Cradle principle. As a result precious resources can be saved. The plastic
pouch also has an additional inner pocket. This is fused with the outer bag at the
base, which guarantees that it stays in position. An additional heat-seal at the base of
the inner pocket guarantees air cushioning. The plastic skins are made of biologically
degradable bioplastic, produced by renewable resources.
In contrast to standardised parcels, the Air Parcel does not have colour print on its
surface. This allows the kraft paper to be recycled in an environmentally friendly
way. The closure and valve have a longer life than the packaging sleeve and can be
used directly for a new package.

__ handling
The Air Parcel provides the user a new packaging experience. Goods are
placed inside the inner pocket of the Air Parcel and the closure is folded over
several times, usually until the round upper edges are no longer visible or
until the goods are reached. The closure band is folded over and the opening
closed; a grip for better handling results. The completed address tag is inserted
into the valve, which is then filled with air, either by the mail carrier or
at the post office. The end of the label is stuck to the valve, the Air Parcel is
sealed and the protection of the goods is guaranteed. Once the package has
been filled with air, the closure cannot be opened, as it can only be opened
through a movement in the opposite direction.
__ Opportunity
A logistic start-up based in Munich is interested in developing the Air Parcel
according to there service and needs. At the moment, the financing is being
examined by the start-up.

__ Starting Point
Outcome of a two-day workshop on Arduino and E-Textiles at Weissensee
School of Art, Berlin. The assignment was: Design an object that has input and
output that you would describe with Onomatopoeia. The Onomatopoeia should
be describing the tactility/ materiality of the object and not the sound coming
out of the object.
How can I communicate with another person without using a phone? How
can I remind someone of something or let him/her feel that I am thinking of
him/her. Pokey Pokey and Schnuuhh are two pairs of bracelets, which connect
the persons wearing them in a playful way. By pressing the fluffy Ball of Pokey
Pokey, the person with the corresponding bracelet gets poked. Schnuhh
evokes a more affactionate interaction: by gently stroking the fringes of the
bracelet one can warm up the second bracelet, letting the other person feel,
that you are thinking of her/him. Please watch the video.

how can we remain self-reliant when
our cognitive faculties deteriorate?
__ Starting Point
Memories effect our personality and enable us to manage our daily lives.
Memory loss can lead to a crisis of identity and feelings of helplessness.
Normally, simple memory aids such as Post-its or wall-calendars can be
used to cope with normal forgetfulness and to remind us of up-coming
events. However, when individuals experience mild cognitive impairment
(MCI), age-related forgetfulness, or more debilitating conditions such as
dementia, normal memory aids like wall-calendars no longer suffice. Memory
loss makes it more difficult for individuals to manage daily life independently.
Discussions with experts on this topic have revealed that people with dementia
or mild cognitive impairment, lose their sense for time and forget
important appointments. As a result they often go to their calendars to
check for upcoming events. However, this information is often quickly forgotten
once the calendar is out of sight. This leads to stress and discontent
in the affected person, which in turn has a negative influence on the progression
of the illness.

__ CONCEPT
MEMO expands the design of a normal wall-calendar through the integration of small detachable
magnetic objects. Each object represents a particular appointment. They can be removed from
the calendar and carried anywhere with you. These portable objects trigger a multi-sensory memory
process in advance of an appointment, even when the calendar is not close-by. The MEMO
objects are made of materials that the user associates with people they see regularly or events
that take place on a regular basis.
Playing music forms another part of the multi-sensory memory process. The music chosen
will also be associated with a particular person or event. This allows the MEMO objects to become
more easily linked with specific meanings. Both the music and the material should have
a personal association for the user, in order to support thought processes in the brain. Light
and vibration are additional signals that form part of the multi-sensory memory process. In a
defined period of time before an event the multi-sensory memory process begins. In addition
to the chosen music, light and vibration are additional signals that form part of the multisensory
memory process. They ensure the perception on different sensory channels.
__ RITUAL
Ideally, the appointments for the upcoming week are prepared together with a carer on a Sunday
as part of a weekly ritual. The upcoming appointments are synchronized between the calendar
and the MEMO objects. Circles, in the colour of the MEMO objects, appear on the E-ink
display of the calendar where the MEMO objects can be easily placed. In the morning the MEMO
objects for the upcoming appointments can be removed from the calender. The shared rituals
together with a relative or a carer helps to strengthen the relation during a time of uncertainty.
34
__ Further user scenarios
In conversations I got the feedback, that people
would like to use it also in offices at work for
a more tangible structure of workflows or daily
tasks. But also for a better overview of all activities
in family life. Each family member, activity,
task or workflow could be represented by one
sort of MEMO objects with its own material
and sound, to differ from another. Implementing
the tangible interaction of MEMO in normal
life could help to better rely on when being
confronted with cognitive impairment.
__ Wearable
In the morning the MEMO objects for the
upcoming appointments can be removed
from the calender. They can be attached to
a specially designed magnetic necklace that
places the MEMO object constantly in the
line of vision. Or in a trouser pocket. Magnetic
brooch elements are also an option, as are
magnetic key rings.
Initialization Phase
Preparation Phase
Departure Phase
__ Multi-Sensory Memory Process
The process has three separate phases, the initialization phase, the preparation phase and the departure phase, at which
point, one should leave for the appointment in order to arrive on time. The music stops automatically on leaving the
home in order not to draw attention. Short pauses serve to prevent the user from growing accustomed to the sensory
signals. Even people with impaired hearing will perceive a change in the acoustic atmosphere. The duration of the intervals
decreases incrementally in order to increase urgency. Timing, such as when the process begins, the length of the phases
and the duration of the intervals, can all be individually adapted. The user can do this together with a relative or carer.
35
__ New Appointment
New events can be implemented in various
ways according to the individual limitations.
In each case the appointment will be voice recorded
by the main person in charge of it. This
creates a personalised reference, which helps
the individual to internalize the appointment.
__ After the Appointment
After the appointment the MEMO object can either placed on the storage space of
the calendar where the objects are charged through induction. When the appointment
is over it will disappear from the calendar. After the other appointments are
over, and the day is has come to an end the calendar day dims and the next calendar
day illuminates.
Material
Magnet
Case
Lock
Technology
Lock
__ Construction
The MEMO objects are constructed in a way, that
the individual components can be replaced at any
time without throwing the entire object away. This
aspect helps to save resources. The E-Ink Display
of the calender requires little energy to produce
and maintain the display. It can be very thin and
its surface is very similar to a real paper. This allows
a better integration into the homely environment.
__ Interaction
If it is, despite melody and material unclear, with whom and where the upcoming
appointment takes place, you can rotate the MEMO object and a
recorded message of the event is played. If the memory process perceived
as unpleasant, it can be stopped for a brief moment by pressing the MEMO
object. Pressing the object outside of a memory process, triggers the according
melody of the object. This playful way helps to internalize the link to the
person or the event.

During the concept phase it was helpful to visit elderlies with dementia in homes for the elderly
for a better approach to the topic. This was supplemented by a meeting with an expert of
the Charité Berlin. Her main task is the user involvement of dementia people into developing
processes of technical assistance systems.
Later on, the MEMO different design prototypes helped to elaborate the shape, sizes and the
different materials of the MEMO objects. In addition to the development of design prototypes
for the MEMO objects, a technical prototype has been developed in conjunction with Arduino.
This technical prototype simulates the multi-sensory memory process and enabled the testing
of various interaction opportunities. Both, the design and the technical prototypes have already
been tested in conjunction with the Brandenburg Alzheimer Society.

__ SUMMARY
The repetition of stimuli through various sensory organs, aids the internalization of memory
rituals and events. This awareness of events can be enhanced through the repetition of activities
with MEMO objects such as placing and removing them from the calendar. Events do not remain
abstract; instead they are experienced and understood on different levels. The MEMO objects
give the individual more independence in the absence of a carer. The carer, on the other hand, can
feel more confident that appointments will be kept, as a result of the shared rituals. The ordinary
calendar is enhanced by the combination of analog and digital properties creating a new form
of calender and interaction, which may help people with cognitive disabilities in everyday life.
During the later stages of dementia, people will find it difficult to recognize and use the MEMO
objects as memory aids. However, the active participation in the memory processes including the
shared personalisation activities and the multi-sensory memory rituals can nonetheless have a
positive effect. Appointments outside the home will decrease and activities such as taking medication
and having meals will take precedence. During these times, MEMO can impart a rhythm
to daily life and provide orientation.

__ starting point
Mobility is a basic human need. It allows independence, creates individuality, and enables participation
in the social fabric. Many people‘s hope for a better life is now closely linked to being
able to live in cities. They expect a higher standard of living, higher wages, diverse cultural
and leisure facilities, better jobs, and shorter commutes to work. Young people in particular
are taking advantage of this opportunity and moving to cities. As a result, the countryside is
experiencing an overall continual decline in population density, with a simultaneous increase
in proportion of the population that is elderly.
Those who stay in the countryside will have to travel ever increasing distances to work, school,
and shops because such services are no longer financially viable as the population density declines.
The same applies to public transport. This is why owning a car remains the only mobility
option for most people in rural areas. Those who do not have a car find their quality of life significantly
restricted. At the same time, cars run on fossil fuels which contribute to increasing
levels of CO2 emissions while being inefficient in terms of the number of passengers they can
transport. Due to the finite nature of fossil resources and the climate change that is already
taking place, new questions about the environmental impact of mobility options are being
asked. As people move away and services shut down, the social centres for rural life are being
lost. The challenge is to make use of trends such as emerging environmental awareness, shared
mobility options, mobile communications, and intermodal transport to tackle these problems
in a way that will address the needs of the future.
44
__ concept
If one considers public transport, logistics, and mobile services, it rapidly becomes clear that all three players currently
traverse rural areas in separate vehicles that are not always fully loaded. Vehicles involved in goods transport often
only have loads one-way and return back to base almost completely empty. Clustering mobility for rural areas needs
to start from this point and combine these three players into a common system that will make mobility and rural
services viable into the future. This concept has three main components.
Landtakt | Rural mobility based on the innovative idea of a scheduled transport loop running at clock-face intervals,
as currently used for public transport in Switzerland. These loops which offer regular trips at certain times past
the hour throughout the day regardless of demand reduce the number of vehicles and resources required compared
to conventional public transport schedules driven by demand. This mobility option with its regular, scheduled travel
times and coordinated connections increases the attractiveness of public transport. It is supplemented by a flexible
demand-based form of operations to ensure optimal mobility across rural areas. Regional producers can also be intentionally
integrated into the system.
__ The Loop
The principle of loop routes is that the public
transport vehicles travel on circular routes. To
keep two overlapping routes from travelling
the same roads at the same time, the routes
are scheduled so as to avoid clumping. On the
other hand, four lines, each coming from a different
direction, can arrive at a given intersection
at the same time, thus guaranteeing optimal
transfer opportunities. To make sure that
these connections are ensured at all times, the
vehicles drive according to the principle „not
as fast as possible, but as fast as necessary“.
village store 2.0 | These mobility hubs where multiple routes converge are located at newlyemerging
rural shopping areas. They thus become both mobility hubs and also bring services
back to rural regions. People, goods, and services are moved via these mobility loops. These new
village stores will not only retail space for the goods delivered by these loop routes, but also
flexible spaces that could be used for office hours by government agencies, doctors, banks, etc.
There will also be co-working spaces that would give people shorter commutes while accessing
high-speed data connections. These multi-functional meeting places and hubs can be set up in
existing vacant buildings and thus create new centres for villages. In addition, these new village
stores could serve as a decentralised storage facility for renewable energies produced in
the countryside. Electronically operated sharing vehicles for special events and local transport
would also be available to borrow from the village store 2.0.
48
MULTIFUNCTIONAL VEHICLE | This new multi-functional, small-scale distribution
will mean bringing together various systems that already exist
alongside one another and will make an extended combined transport system
necessary. The changed framework conditions require a new flexible
vehicle concept, re-thinking of stop locations, and the redesign of reloading
boxes for goods.
Because the vehicles will be used for a variety of functions both by day and
by night, their capacity will be better utilised with higher efficiency compared
to conventional busses and cars. The use of renewable energies will also
reduce pollution of the environment. Regular needs and offers can then be
covered by the village store 2.0. Temporary services would arrive via the loop
mobility vehicles and be available at regular times or on an ad hoc basis at
the village store 2.0. During the day, people and spontaneous orders of goods
would be mostly transported. In the mornings and evenings, goods required
on a regular basis would be transported in smaller units. In order for the
vehicles to give priority to spontaneous and regular transports, but without
ever travelling empty, a new additional range of products with extended delivery
times would be added. At the same time, the vehicle must be able to
react flexibly to variable loads within a very short period.
49
_ Floor Area
The floor area of the vehicle is square and measures
2.55m on all sides. This is the maximum
permissible width for general vehicles according
to national road traffic regulations (StVZO). This
means that no structural measures have to be
taken in the villages for the concept to be implemented
at low cost. The vehicle will have a wide
opening of 1.20m. At the same time, maximum
flexibility in the vehicle interior as well as flexible
docking of the vehicles in relation to each other is
guaranteed. The focus is on fast and smooth loading
and unloading process at the hubs, in order
to save time.
__ platform
A common platform bundles all offers of the concept:
LANDTAKT | In principle, it would be conceivable that passengers can choose between a fast or slow travel route,
depending on how much time they have. Depending on other demands and the loading conditions of the vehicles,
an individual timetable is created according to the specified preferences. At the same time, at a stop, each change
into other vehicle is visualised and supported to make the transition as smooth as possible. It is conceivable that the
vehicle recognizes the ascending passenger and automatically books the journey to the total monthly account on
the platform.
GOODS ORDER | Appropriate order options are needed to ensure continuous use of the vehicle. In addition to daily
needs for goods, there are „extended delivery times“ for goods not immediately required. These allow the goods to be
transported only when there is actually space in the vehicle. In addition, orders from certain product groups or a manufacturer
could be collected from one location or region. They are only transported when a quantity is reached that
justifies transport. This could lead to a resource savings, especially for goods over long distances. To make it attractive
for the customer it might be possible to give discounts or set up a points rewards system.
Services | It is also possible to book appointments via the platform with the most diverse services in Dorfladen 2.0.
Again, the indication of the urgency of the appointment can help to offer targeted or bundled dates of services in

__ FUNcTIONal column
The square-shaped base area and openings in all four sides of the vehicle result in, on the one
hand, a high level of vehicle flexibility and on the other hand, a functional column in all four
corners. All important functional elements to the interior and exterior of the vehicle are concentrated
in the functional column. By replicating the functional column in all four corners
of the vehicle, the number of different components is significantly reduced, thus saving on
resources. The acrylic glass opening can be folded horizontally upwards. This allows all four
openings to open simultaneously without interfering with each other. It is also possible to
couple the vehicles together in the closed and open state. A groove in the upper part of the
outer panelling, as well as rubber hinges, facilitates the upwards folding mechanism.
__ Expansion
The functional column also allows a simple expansion of the vehicle size in one direction. These
are vehicles that, along one side, maintain the measurement of 255cm and in the other direction
offer 314cm or 402cm. Accordingly, the functional columns are positioned further apart,
whereby new vehicle elements must be inserted only in the area between them. If it is not yet
foreseeable whether a load in a particular area will be permanently greater, two small vehicles
can initially be operated as one vehicle by means of an electronic tow bar.
54
55
__ Seats
A flexible interior area is created by reducing it to the functional columns located
in each corner. At the same time, it is characterised by high functionality. On the
one hand, it provides a large and flexibly adjustable interior space for goods and
objects in relation to the overall vehicle space. On the other hand, it still allows
seating for 8 persons, which is held constant. The seats are attached to the handles
and serve as the axis of rotation for the seats. Thus, when not needed, the seats
can be rotated over the inner panel of the wheels, allowing a spontaneous and
flexible response to different loading conditions.
56
__ roller containers
The roller containers are used for the compact and fast transport of goods between the vehicles
and between the vehicles and the village store. They also transport the objects needed
for the carrying out of the various services. By means of a key and lock principle, based on
the substructure of the roller containers, the containers can be pushed into one another with
a 90° rotation. When combined with a rectangular groove in the lower part of the functional
column, into which the roller containers can be pushed and fastened, the result is an exact
positioning in the interior of the vehicle. This is necessary because the roller containers
supply the vehicle inductively with current and thus a synchronisation of the coils is guaranteed.
The power supply via the roller containers saves time and manipulation at the stopping
points. The roller containers are charged with electricity when they are in the village
store 2.0. In addition, they mark a clear boundary between goods and people in the vehicle.
57
58
__ change process
A short and smooth reloading process is important to avoid waiting times and delays for the
passenger. One person and a roll container, two persons or people with reduced physical mobility
can enter the vehicle through the wide openings of the vehicle on all four sides simultaneously.
In addition, depending on the condition of loading and the situation at the stop, it
is possible to determine which openings are used as exits and which are used as entrances.
Likewise, roll containers and people can receive separate entrances and exits into and from
the vehicle. A cramped, uncoordinated and thus negative entrance and exit experience for the
passengers together with the roll containers is avoided.

__ passenger information
General | In the vehicle itself there is a general passenger information,
which shows where you are exactly inside the loops. Since each
passenger has an individual route with different transfers, each passenger
has to be informed individually about his route.
individual | To offer the passengers an optimal transfer experience,
individual passenger information is planned on each passenger‘s digital
device, for whichever kind of device might be available in the
future. This helps to make the transfer process as smooth as possible
from one vehicle to another. Even before the respective stop, the
passenger should be discreetly informed of the next change without
being disturbed.
60
61
__ material
In addition to the functionality, it was important to make the journey with goods and services pleasant
for people. The use of translucent materials with a rhomboid structure for the seat covering
(CoreCoat Mesh) and the covering of the roller containers (metal mesh) creates lightness and reduces
the feeling of being „delivered“. The generous view through the ceiling, along with the four
side openings, brings a lot of daylight into the vehicle and allows the sky to be seen, even if goods
and roller containers are in the vehicle. The perforation in the upper part of the functional column
creates a pleasant lighting mood at twilight and at night. The use of plastic reinforced with
natural fibres made of flax also creates a natural atmosphere in the interior and saves resources.

__ entrance frame
The village store 2.0 automatically serves as a stopping point in its role as a hub for rural mobility. Due to the
existing shopping and goods area, which may also include a café depending on the village, there is automatically
a covered, indoor waiting area. To make the various buildings that have been brought back into use recognisable
as a village store and a transport stop on the one hand, and to provide optimum support for transit and for the
exchange process on the other, a suitable entrance area has been developed. It protrudes in equal measure into the
building and out of it, creating a covered shelter outdoors. At the same time, the village store is visible from some
distance due to the unique entrance area.
__ summary
The concentration and intermodal linking of different options within a single system makes the system more attractive
to use and makes the cluster viable in areas with shrinking population. Use rather than ownership is in the
foreground, without having to forego mobility. Loop mobility provides better and more opportunities for mobility in
public transport, while reducing the overall mobility needs by bringing services back to rural areas. The disadvantages
of distance are overcome by moving beyond functional segregation.
All groups of people, especially those without cars, are given new ways to make use of mobility options and services
on-site, in everyday life or in their leisure time. The quality of life for all inhabitants of the village is enhanced. Thus,
the concept provides a basis for mobility and public services in rural areas. This is necessary so that municipalities
and their citizens have a basis for equipping and complementing their villages with a sense of community involvement
and continuing options.

Man
an.
Zeit fortzubewegen [CANZLER | KNIE 2012 S. 3].
i nerhalb der Gese lschaft. Dies äußert sich durch Aspekte wie
Rationalisierung, Individualisierung, Differenzierung sowie Domestizierung.
Im Gegensat zu vormodernen Gese lschaften entstehen i nerhalb
von Wirtschaft, Politik, Kultur, Wi senschaft und Technik eigene
„Proze slogiken“.
keiner Gese lschaft zuvor gab [RAMMLER 2 01, S. 27].
Selbst
A b. 21: Konsequenzen der Schrumpfung
Städten in ähnlicher Form übernommen.
werden (siehe A b. 42, 43).
Smart Grid und Vehicle to Grid, bilden dabei grundlegende
056 057
Nutzungsinnovation, wäre eine Verknüpfung
vom ländlichen Raum in
die Stadt möglich. A lerdings wür-
es sich um eine weitere Form
des Kurierdienstes handeln, bei der
letztlich nur ein recht geringer Personenkreis
angesprochen werden
würde. Es handelt sich um keine
grundlegende Systeminnovation,
die zukunftsweisende Veränderungen
anschieben könnte.
DORFLADEN 2.0 | Die Id e des Dorfladens
Ort angebotenen Waren mit einer
Mobilität station. Neben der Erledigung
von a ltäglichen Bedürfni sen
gonal zueinander fahren, eingesetzt (siehe A b. 69).
In
Kantenlängen liegen (siehe A b. 70).
in Curitiba gesetzt, was anhand gestiegener Fahrgastzahlen abzulesen ist.
In Ruhephasen
__ process
The starting point is, on the one hand, extensive research into and theoretical work on rural areas, social change,
mobility and transport, and, on the other hand, my own experience of growing up in a rural area. This was supplemented
by observations and conversations in rural parts of Brandenburg. The next step was to bring together
the most important questions and formulate initial ideas. These were discussed with various experts in the fields
of mobility, rural affairs and schedule planning. Step by step, the final concept was developed and refined. The
structuring of the different components of the concept also began to run in parallel with this from a certain point
onwards. Vehicle design in particular was checked with 1:1 models and scale models. Different construction and
design principles were weighed against one another in terms of their feasibility, but also in terms of their interaction
with the entire concept.

__ process
The lectureship started with a one-week excursion including a symposium at Gutshof Sauen. Various experts
from the region were invited to give lectures. The presentation of my master‘s thesis was also part of the symposium.
In addition, we visited different companies, hospitals and mobility providers in the region.
In the next step, a rough topic selection took place on the side of the students. Afterwards I presented design
thinking methods, user journeys, empathy maps, etc. and guided the students to apply the techniques to their
subject areas. The students then concretized their concepts and services in the field of mobility and infrastructure.
During the design phase, I provided feedback and helped to finalize the projects for the final presentation.
In September, the designs, concepts and services were exhibited and presented together with two other courses
of the Greenlab in Beskov Castle.

__ holistic design approch
The focus of my work at N+P is the reduction of today’s complexity to a level of simplicity
that impacts the user experience in a meaningful way. Informed by cross-discipline-knowledge
we thrive for timelessness to outlive superficial trends and shape the future. Similar
to architects we try to understand the context of the product and see the bigger picture. Our
role is to question established norms, withstand short term answers and create solutions,
that are sustainable in every sense. The aim ist to create holistic solutions and to turn visions
into reality.

__ High Speed Train for China
Research, workshop, conception, design and
consultation of an high speed train for China
together with an Chinese manufacturer for train
elements. The client was also a Chinese company.
The train includes 5 different compartment
types. A common design language and CMF concept
with gradations for 5 different compartment
types was developed. Together with a colleague
we managed the whole project and the team,
which assisted us.
__ Regional Train
Designing a new regional train interior with several
compartment types for single-storey and twostorey
trains. The requirement was to implement
a modular setting into the whole train layout. The
phase 01 included research, workshop, conception,
design and CMF of the interior for three
different concepts. In phase 02 one concept has
been developed further down to the last details
with the focus on standards and guidelines. The
user experience was crucial for the interior design
at every stage. Together with a colleague we
managed the whole project and the team, which
assisted us.
__ Dining Area - High Speed Train
Design development for a step by step implementation
for a new dining area concept for a high
speed train. The design started with an optimization
of the status quo and ended in a completely
new layout and interior design. Beside the redesign
of the whole interior a main focus was on new interaction
during the order and eating process as
well as on the CMF.

__ Mobility and Service Concept
N+P developed a food and mobiliy service without any client. AVA is an intermodal platform, which enables
travellers to access food throughout their whole travel chain across all different modes of transportation.
Intermodal dynamic routing eases the matching of individual mobility and foodchains while always respecting
the overall individual mobility context. I was part of the ideation phase and feedback rounds during
the project. Please watch the video here: http://www.np-id.com/de/projekt/food-and-mobility-as-a-service
__ interaction projects
__ Household Appliance
The project includes research, conduct of workshop, conception and the design of a new
product line in the field of household appliances. The overall topic was the mass customization
and configuration. For the workshop personas, user journeys, empathy maps and insights
were created. In the design process the focus was on interaction, user experience, service and
product design. In consultation with my boss all areas were developed and designed by myself.
__ Start-up | Health Care Project
For a start-up, a colleague and I lead the development of a new
product group in the healthcare sector. The product should be
used both in the private and in the professional environment. The
project includes research, workshop, industrial design, interaction
design, CMF and prototyping. The use of the device is the
focus of product development. Therefore, design and functional
prototypes are used to test the interaction with the device.

__ Start-up | Health Care Wearable
The moio.care system supports nurses in their daily tasks. The sensor is attached to the upper body with a plaster pocket
and is extremely flat, flexible and soft making it discreet and unobtrusive. Depending on the configuration, it collects and
interprets data of various nursing challenges and informs the staff when there is a need for action – anytime, anywhere.
The starting point for the holistic visual design and branding for the startup was the naming and logo and CMF development.
In addition, business equipment including business cards, an informative handout and the website were
developed. The first designed product of this startup includes the plaster pocket and the sensor element contained in
it. An inductive charging station for the sensors with integrated UV disinfection completes the product portfolio. In
consultation with my boss all areas were developed and designed by myself. The project won the Universal Design Gold
Award 2018. Webside: http://moio.care/
