Dear Desperate for Privacy 15 year old,<br />
Parents often share information about their children with friends<br />
and relatives they trust in order to receive support in their<br />
experience of being a parent. It is difficult for parents to know<br />
if they are making the best decisions in their parenting since<br />
there is no right way, especially as the world around us changes<br />
so quickly. Many parents rely on their support system to help<br />
keep their parenting decisions in line with their goals and values.<br />
Since most parents are not experts in understanding children’s<br />
developmental stages, sharing information about you helps them<br />
to gauge if your experiences are within the norm or something<br />
to be worried about. Help your mother understand how you<br />
feel about your privacy by discussing what aspects of her life<br />
she would appreciate you keeping to yourself. If your mother<br />
needs help or support, identify one or two people you would feel<br />
comfortable with her sharing her concerns about you. Situations<br />
that are potentially serious or dangerous, however, will require<br />
your mother to seek assistance from a professional and support<br />
from her confidants.<br />

All advice is screened and selected by Dr. Renae Lapin,<br />
a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist in private practice<br />
treating families, children, adolescents, and adults. Dr. Renae<br />
has 38 years’ experience as a Family Therapist and has been<br />
writing a monthly column in the Parklander for the past ten<br />
years. Your advice will be published anonymously. Teacher<br />
recommendation and parent permission required. Write to ASK<br />
