34 HOLIDAY KINDLING THE Hanukkah lights by Rabbi Melissa Stollman, Temple Kol Tikvah The word Hanukkah comes from the Hebrew word for dedication, and it is derived from the Maccabees’ rededication of the Holy Temple in Jerusalem. Hanukkah begins on the eve of the 25th day of the Hebrew month of Kislev and lasts for eight days. It is a holiday celebrated within the home as well as the synagogue, with the kindling of lights each night. Hence the holiday is sometimes called the “Festival of Lights.” The origin of Hanukkah is found in two texts, the Apocrypha and the Talmud. The Apocrypha recounts the battles and victories of the Hasmonean (Maccabee) family during the Hellenistic period. The war was a religious battle, fighting to practice Judaism, ending in the purification and rededication, which took eight days, of the Temple in Jerusalem. The Talmud mentions how the Greeks entered the Temple, defiling all the oil that was there. The Hasmonean dynasty fought with might to overcome them, and found only one single cruse of oil. The miracle of Hanukkah is that cruse of oil, which lasted eight days. From this comes the moral of the Hanukkah story, as written by the prophets and read on the Sabbath of Hanukkah, “Not by might, nor by power, but by My spirit says the Lord of Hosts.” (Zech 4:6). On the first night of Hanukkah, one light is kindled with an additional candle added each following night until all eight lights are lit on the eighth night. The lights, kindled after sundown, are lit after the reciting the benedictions. On the first night there are three blessings and for the seven subsequent nights, the first two are read. The blessings praise God for the commandment of kindling the Hanukkah lights, for the miracles that took place, and for giving life and this season to celebrate the holiday. The first candle is placed on the right side of the hanukkiyah, or menorah, and the second candles (and the others following) are placed directly to the left. But, when lighting the menorah, the first candle lit is the one on the furthest left and then the next one on the right. There is one additional candle called the Shamash, or the helper candle. This candle plays an important role, as the holiday lights should not be used to kindle other lights. The Shamash does the “work” by lighting all of the lights. The menorah should be placed in a home where one can see it from outside so that all passersby know of the Hanukkah miracle that took place. And, on Friday night, the Hanukkah candles should be lit prior to the Sabbath candles and blessings. The traditional foods served on this holiday include latkes, potato pancakes, DECEMBER 2017 and sufganiyot, jelly donuts – both of which are made by frying in oil. Games of dreidel are played using a four-sided spinning top inscribed with the four Hebrew letters: nun, gimmel, hey, and shin. This game of chance is adapted from an old German gambling game where there is a central pot of coins or chocolate gelt. Each player takes a turn spinning and when the dreidel lands on a letter there is a related action. Nun – take nothing; gimmel – take everything; hey – take half, and shin – put one in. The letters stand for the words neis gadol hayah sham meaning “a great miracle happened there” referring to the rededication of the Temple. In Israel, the letter shin is replaced by a pey for the word po, meaning “here” (instead of there). On this holiday there are ways to better our world as well. Some families donate money or gifts to charitable organizations on the sixth night of Hanukkah, calling it the Ner Shel Tzedakah, the candle of righteousness. By making this donation the candle glows for those in need.
