BETTER FOR ALL
For 129 years, the Tampa
Metropolitan Area YMCA has
served as a place of possibility
and promise for all residents
in Hillsborough and East Pasco
counties. Unfortunately, in
times when the true power of
“us” is unknown to many and
our bonds are fraying, we must
do even more to enhance our
human connections. That’s why
the Y passionately focuses on
strengthening communities.
Working with friends and
partners like you, the Y provides
everyone the opportunity to be
healthy and thrive, to connect
with others, and contribute to a
better community. Everything the
Y does makes us – as individuals
and a community – better.
Since 1889, the Tampa Y has
stayed true to its mission to
put Judeo-Christian principles
into practice through programs
that build healthy spirit, mind
and body for all. Our cause is
to strengthen the foundations
of community. We do this by
supporting whole families,
serving all ages, and infusing our
core values of honesty, respect,
responsibility and caring at all
operational levels.
This annual report captures how the Tampa YMCA developed youth,
strengthened our community and contributed to a better us in 2017,
focusing on these top Vision 2020 strategic priorities:

The Tampa YMCA’s commitment to nurturing the
potential of every child and teen is evident in the
many programs and activities designed for local
kids.
FOR A BETTER US
YOUTH DEVELOPMENT
In 2017, 23,655 teens and
children cultivated values, life
skills and positive relationships
in various Y programs like
youth sports, day camps and
teen leadership development
programs.
The Tampa Y believes all children
and teens have potential. But
research shows many kids from
underserved and low-income
families need extra support
in reaching this potential.
They often start kindergarten
underprepared and fall behind
their peers as they progress
through school. As long as this
achievement gap exists, most of
these young people will reach
adulthood intellectually, socially
and emotionally unprepared to
succeed. This fundamentally
changes the fabric of our
communities – these kids are
more likely to become teen
parents, engage in criminal
activities, suffer from mental
health issues, and are more
likely to be unemployed or
underemployed. The Y works
with caregivers, students and
schools across the Tampa Bay
area to close the achievement
gap through evidencebased
programs that improve
students’ educational readiness,
engagement and outcomes, while
helping them grow emotionally
and physically, too.

9,328 kids

support through early

childcare and summer camp.
10,348 young athletes learned
teamwork and stayed active in youth sports.

The Tampa Y improves the
community’s health and well-being
by providing programs and activities that
promote wellness, reduce risk for chronic
disease and help others manage and reclaim
their health.
FOR A BETTER US
2017
IMPACT SNAPSHOT:
159,465 children,
teens, adults, senior citizens,
cancer survivors, chronically ill
community members, at-risk youth,
infants and toddlers were supported,
guided and received resources
to achieve greater health and
well-being for their spirit, mind
and body.
In 2017, the Y expanded
educational programs to help
community members navigate
through obesity and chronic
illness. These include the Y
Diabetes Prevention Program,
Pedaling for Parkinson’s,
Enhance ® Fitness senior fitness and
arthritis management program,
Y Weight, LIVESTRONG ® at the
YMCA for cancer survivors and
SilverSneakers for active older
adults. These programs make us,
our Ys and our community better.
The result is a community that
values health and supports healthy
choices.
As part of our focus on healthy
living, the Tampa YMCA is also
committed to keeping children
nourished all year long. One in five
American children doesn’t know
where his or her next meal will
come from. Studies show when
kids are hungry, they’re more
likely to bully others, have trouble
focusing in class and struggle
with schoolwork. A proper diet is
essential to physical, mental, social
and emotional development. The
Y fills gaps in access to free meals
during the summer and afterschool
hours by providing year-round
healthy snacks and meals to kids
who live with food insecurity
to help them grow strong and
smart. Watch how the Tampa
YMCA is fighting food insecurity
in partnership with Hillsborough
County Public Schools and the
YMCA of the USA:
377,000 healthy meals and
nutritious snacks provided to kids as part of
the Y’s out-of-school meal programs.
5,928 kids and 1,131 different
families living in food deserts pay $1 for a full bag
of fresh produce from the Y’s Veggie Van – A Mobile
Market Place.

The Tampa Y responds to society’s most
pressing needs – like drowning prevention
and generational poverty – with innovative,
community-based solutions.
FOR A BETTER
2017
IMPACT SNAPSHOT:
7,123 children
learned to swim and
be safe around water.
Drowning is the second leading
cause of accidental childhood
death. More children under the
age of four drown in Florida than
anywhere else in the nation.
Further, Hillsborough County
regularly ranks among the highest
counties nationally for drowning
cases in the same age group. To
reverse these statistics, the Y
offers free and more affordable
swimming and water safety
courses so that they’re available
to everyone.
562 children received mobile
swim lessons through a Tampa Y
partnership with the Children’s
Board of Hillsborough County, St.
Joseph’s Children’s Hospital, City
of Tampa, Hillsborough County
Fire & Rescue and Brandon Sports
& Aquatic Center. WATCH how
the Mobile Water Safety Team
bring an innovative water safety
program to local neighborhoods
for free:

through the Go for Green program in partnership
with the Tampa Bay Rays, United Way Suncoast

Our Y has a tremendous history here in Tampa
as the city’s oldest nonprofit and we have been
evolving over the last 129 years as we strive to
serve the ever changing needs of our families.
FROM THE PRESIDENT & CEO
The year 2017 was a big one for me
because it’s the year I was fortunate
enough to join the Tampa YMCA
family! And what a family it is. Even
before my wife and I officially called
Tampa Bay home, I was welcomed
with open arms. Since October
2017, I have been forging new
relationships, educating myself on
our Y’s culture and atmosphere and
working alongside our great team of
volunteers and staff to make a great
Y even better.
I arrived during a year when we
accomplished so much! 2017 was
a year when new data showed the
drowning rate among young children
in Hillsborough County decreased
by half. This is encouraging news
to the Tampa Y because drowning
prevention is a top strategic priority
area. However, there is much work to
be done. Florida still ranks number
one in the nation for youth drowning
cases. The Y will continue to reach
more vulnerable populations in
the years to come. Together, with
supporters like you, we’re committed
to ensuring not one more local child
drowns.
As a local leader in health and
wellness, the Tampa Y launched the
new Enhance ® Fitness program at
three of our Ys. This senior fitness
and arthritis management program
is designed to increase fitness levels
while building a sense of social
connectedness. The feedback we’re
getting is phenomenal and we look
forward to expanding the program at
more Ys in the near future.
In 2017, we expanded the Y’s Veggie
Van – A Mobile Market Place to
include two new stops in Plant City
and Dover. Through the Veggie
Van, we distribute fresh fruits and
veggies into targeted communities
without access to healthy and
affordable food. We also kicked off
a new collaboration with the James
A. Haley Veterans’ Hospital and look
forward to bettering the lives of
thousands of Tampa Bay veterans!
This past year, we expanded the
Downtown Y to include a newly
renovated multi-use fitness space,
called “the STUDIO.” Further
north, we cut the ribbon on a large
renovation project at the Bob Sierra
North Tampa Family Y to provide
12,000 North Tampa children,
teens and adults the support and
resources they need to achieve
greater health and well-being.
Furthermore, more Northdale/
Carrollwood kids can learn about
teamwork, relationship-building and
other life skills in the facility’s newly
expanded Kid Zone.
In addition, I’m excited to have
come aboard at the same time we
broke ground on the final phase
of the Spurlino Family YMCA at
Big Bend Road. By late 2018,
we’ll welcome thousands of South
Hillsborough County residents
into our new 32,500-square-foot
facility in Riverview. This supportive
environment will serve as a muchneeded
community hub where
families can spend quality time
together, kids can build character
and confidence and everyone can
improve their quality of life.
My thanks to the Governance
Board, center advisory boards,
volunteers, donors and staff for
their dedication and continuous
support to serve the changing needs
of our community. Throughout 2017,
we’ve stayed true to our Vision 2020
III established priority areas: closing
the achievement gap, improving
Tampa Bay’s health and well-being,
teen leadership development and
drowning prevention.
I feel very fortunate to have this
wonderful opportunity to serve such
a diverse and vibrant community.
