In my time as
chairman of the
playing Committee
over the last two seasons,
as a club we have tried to
make a concerted effort
to be a more inclusive
committee within the club
with our main focus on all the playing and rugby
elements at Sudbury from Senior level down the age
grades to the very grassroots at Youth and Minis.
The committee is there not only to try and govern
rugby strategy, playing matters and pitch
management, it is the link between the coaches
and team admins where information, ideas or any
issues can be discussed and more importantly
the link between club members, players,
volunteers and the club at management level.
The success of such a committee is only possible
when people play an active part which over the
last two seasons has become a lot more evident
but we can always do with more people to take
part. We meet on a bi monthly basis on a
Monday evening generally.
One of our challenges over the last couple of
seasons was, as a club, the decision to introduce
the RFU initiative of Age Grade Rugby and Old
Mutual Wealth Kids First.
Personally I saw this as a step forward in
hopefully retaining players at the club when they
join at 6 and 7 right through the minis and youth
system and into senior rugby.
It has been a challenge for the coaches who are
already well on the path to developing our young
players in those mid range age groups as it’s
looking at developing players skills as rugby
players in a competitive way but not necessarily
with a winning at all costs attitude.
Without our coaches who by volunteering with
their time and efforts have made this possible,
have taken to the challenge and are working
hard to implement the principles to develop their
players.
Age Grade Rugby is there to help boys and girls
learn and enjoy the 15-a-side game through
age-appropriate building blocks that put
inclusivity and skill development first.
With that in mind there is a nationally consistent
menu that ensures the intensity of competitive
opportunities increases in line with the motivations
of our young players in hand with a playing
calendar where we hope to create a more
balanced playing season for every level of player.
