She continues to produce her art with same fervour as ever. One of her pieces fetched the highest ever price for a female living artist in 2008 when, Christie's New York sold a work by her for $5.1 million. She has been plagued by severe anxiety disorder all her life and for the past 40 years she has lived in a psychiatric hospital by choice in Japan, with her studio a short walk away. Kusama has often said, "If it were not for art, I would have killed myself a long time ago." Anxiety & Polka Dots Polka dots, pumpkins and infinity mirrors define her art and sculptures. Polka dots derive from her hallucinations and her earliest recorded art from age ten, shows a woman in a kimono covered in polka dots. Polka dots represent the sun and the moon and are a way to infinity she has said. The infinity rooms represent a cosmic room with mirrors and lights. Her exhibitions travel the world and have some of the highest visitor numbers. She has received Japan’s highest award for art, and is the first woman to receive such.
