Judging the Salisbury Concours d’Elegance
There are two basic methods for the technical judging of a Concours event. The
Salisbury Concours uses French Rules Judging.
French Rules Judging, which is utilized by the Salisbury Concours, involves
teams of three judges for each class, guided by an experienced Chief Judge. They
review each automobile for elegance and beauty, subjectively considering its design
and craftsmanship. Physical condition and authenticity carry less weight than the
grace and excellence of the design, although used as tie breakers.
Points Judging, not used for the Salisbury Concours, is often employed at clubrun
events such as the Antique Automobile Club of America (AACA). In this approach,
a team of expert judges uses a judging form organized into extensive technical
categories. Points are awarded for each category, the scores are tabulated,
and the highest scoring automobiles are the winners receiving awards.
People’s Choice judging, a highlight of the Concours, has been utilized at every
annual Salisbury automobile event. Spectators are given a ballot along with the
event program at the time they enter the gates. They may then walk the field, select
their favorites, and then face the difficult challenge of voting for just one. This
popular event is a fun way to engage spectators in the spirit of the Concours.
Hagerty Youth Judging Program
The Youth Judging Program is underwritten
by the Hagerty Insurance Co.,
well-known provider of collector car
insurance. This program provides an
opportunity for kids to learn about
great cars firsthand.
Children aged 12 and under, led by adult guides, visit specifically selected automobiles
in the automobile show field, where they are invited to visit with the owners,
learn about collecting and restoring the autos, and then judge the cars.
Judging is based on aspects the children can relate to and easily verify, such as
engine bay cleanliness, paint finish quality, engine sound, and interior fit and finish.
Owners of the pre-selected automobiles answer questions and may fire up the
vehicle or even allow the young judges to sit in the cars. The real winners are the
children who discover the delight of fine vehicles and their interesting owners.
Youth Judging is limited to the first 20 children to sign up. Sign up is on the day of
the Concours—look for a table on the west upper lawn above the parking lot area
and the Hagerty banner. Youth Judging will commence about 2:00 PM. Announcements
will remind participants of the start as well as where to assemble.
