TM The Intellectual Aiming High Priyanka Dhanie is a 19 year old competitive archer. She holds a large number of National titles and records in her quiver, considering she has only been at it for about four years. She has represented Trinidad and Tobago on several occasions, at both Junior and Senior levels, and is the current Junior and Senior Female Compound Bow Champion of Trinidad and Tobago. She holds a number of records in both the Indoor and Outdoor form of the sport. However, her favourite version of Archery is the field aspect, where an archer can compete in the open field. ON THE MOVE The field of archery is not as established in Trinidad and Tobago as compared to countries such as the U.S.A. Maintaining good grades in addition to consistently high scores was no easy task for Priyanka, but persistence, paired with the discipline archery demanded, was an exceptional aid in being both a good student and competitive sports woman. The road from being the amateur archer she was four years ago was paved with broken nocks, disappointment, and trials at every target, but nonetheless each triumph made them worth it. Priyanka’s Archery Milestones Date January 2014 February 2014 August 2014 September 2014 November 2014 Achievement - Won a Bronze medal, Internal Club Competition. - Won Gold in the National Indoor Championships - Won Silver in the MICA Championship. - Won Gold at the 50m and broke the National Record. - She now has now broken five National records. - Nominated by the Trinidad and Tobago Target Archery Federation as the Youth Award Female for the Trinidad & Tobago Olympic Committee (TTOC), the Ministry of Sport and the First Citizens Sport Foundation for the year 2014 Within our twin isles, the archery field boasts a fairly even number of male and female competitors. This reduces any possibility that a bias arises. Furthermore, archers are grouped according to age and bow type, making the final score a measure of skill, thereby eliminating the idea that gender influences an archer’s ability. Priyanka adds “Personally, I never let my gender become a hindrance to furthering my archery career. If anything, I let it be motivation to succeed and inspire others to do the same. Being a young woman doesn’t mean that I compete any differently than any man on the field. I believe that if someone wants to follow their dream, no matter how unorthodox it may seem to everyone else, they should put in every bit of effort into making their dream a reality. Nothing compares to the feeling you get when you accomplish what you set out for and every moment leading up to it now seems to have paid off.” In the coming years, apart from furthering her education in the area of Sports Science, she aims to partake in training at an internationally recognized level which will assist in her participation in the Archery World Cup alongside renowned names like Erika Jones and Sara Lopez. Additionally, working alongside other athletes, be it on the archery field or through her profession in Sport Science, will be a great asset in learning new things. The field of archery in the Caribbean can only grow with more effort being placed on getting exposure for the sport. Very few people in Trinidad are even aware that archery exists as a sport. Apart from exposure, better training facilities and programmes need to be implemented, taking into consideration that there are student athletes with the great potential to go into the sport full time. January 2015 February 2015 March 2015 June 2015 July 2015 February 2016 March 2016 August 2016 - Won the Award of Youth Female Archer of the year, 2014 by the TTTAF. - Won Gold in her Category during my first non-ranking tournament for 2015 - Won Gold in her Junior Category as the Female Compound Archer. - Won Silver in the Senior Female Compound category. - Won Silver trophy in the Elimination round of the Senior Category. - Participated in the Southern Caribbean Championships as part of Trinidad and Tobago’s Team. - Won Silver in the Outdoor 18 m. - Gold in the Outdoor 50 m. - First place trophy for Outdoor 50 m qualification round. - Gold in the category for the Field Shoot. - Broke the two Records for Female Compound Archer, Junior, Outdoors. This is the third time she have set the record in the Outdoor Tournament. - Won Gold in the Junior Compound Female Category in the National Youth Indoor Championships. - Won Gold in the Senior Compound Female Category in the National Open Indoor Championships Ranking and Eliminations. - Participated in the Southern Caribbean Archery Championships, held in Barbados, as part of Trinidad and Tobago’s Team. - Won Gold in the 18 m Indoor Tournament. - Gold in the Field Shoot Event. - Gold in the Double 50M Ranking Round. - Gold in the 50 m Eliminations. - Silver in the Federal Shoot. - Was selected to be part of the Trinidad and Tobago Team to shoot for the S.C.A.C.
